P40 Pro App Security? - Huawei P40 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi, so I've been looking at the P40 Pro and am happy this the lack of Google services but one thing I cant seem to find an answer for is the security of apps that aren't coming from app gallery.
I understand petal search can install apps directly from 3rd party APK sites but is there anything actually extra in the phone/software that ensures these apps are safe and of good quality?

Clarification on no GMS please

Looking to grab the mate 30 Pro.. Or potentially the p40 Pro after tomorrows launch. But really wanna check out the slow mo on the mate, plus love the design
I'm an android user.
Been doing a lot of reading and still struggling to grasp if I actually need google services on my phone or not? I know I won't have generic Google apps, but there a possibility to install them. Done some custom rom installs many moons ago.
I'll still have my Samsung s10e work phone.
Can anyone clarify or point me in the direction of an an article that explains the pros and cons?
Failing this it looks like the p30 pro is by best alternate. As I tend not to go mainbsteam Samsung
Hi there,
The installation of gms right now is unstable or tricky. For example using Chatpartner+Ice Box+Island is the most stable as it gets, but it has its own drawbacks(you can see info about the methods in the other threads). I don't know if we will get a clean permanent solution. I hope we get.
So let's assume you don't get gms, because you don't want to mess with the current unstable solutions. The drawbacks from my point of view are:
- no PlayStore -> So you don't get your paid apps. Also you can't get all apps from the Huawei store, because some of them are missing. Some partial solution: Use ApkPure or some other app store to get your apps.
- no Youtube -> Youtube requires gms. Solution: use Youtube Vanced;
- no Google Maps -> It requires gms. Solution: use Waze;
- no Google Drive/Photos -> It requires gms. Solution: use Microsoft OneDrive or any other cloud;
- no Contact Sync -> It requires gms. Solution: export contacts from Google and import them.(here I decided again to go with Microsoft so I sync my future new contacts in a cloud after all)
- no Gmail -> It requires gms. Solution: use Outlook app or any other email app like Nine. You can add you gmail account there.
Some people suggested to use the google apps through a browser and put shortcuts on your home screen, but this is not a replacement for the actual apps in my oppinion.
Bottom line:
- If you don't want any hassle and you want everything everywhere working then get P30 Pro;
- If you want to try the available workarounds for google apps and you won't get overwhelmed or irritated when some errors occur and you have to tinker again then get the Mate 30 Pro;
- If you want to detach from google ecosystem and try some new apps then get the Mate 30 Pro(just make sure you thought of all apps that you need and found a comfortable replacement);
- For the P40 Pro I can't speak;
I have one of the workarounds of GMS on my phone and the apps are working. However I am trying to move away a bit from gms, because I want to be free to try new tech and use all my apps. I am a heavy Google user paying for subscriptions for some services so I am dependent on their apps. However with this phone I realized that Google is closing their services forcing users to have certain hardware which I dislike. This is why I will make an attempt to use alternatives(mostly I will use Microsoft products) so I can buy whatever phone I like and use it seamlessly.
I hope this helps!

Chatpartner+Ice Box+Island , but I see someone just created a thread saying that ChatPartner doesn't work now(I don't know if it is true). However Chatpartner is just the first part for getting the gms on the device which can be achieved also with other methods like restoring a backup which has this chinese app for installing gms(you can search, videos are everywhere showing it). Then afterwards probably you will start getting the non-stop notifications that your device is not certified. From that point you will need to follow the guides to add your account and then use Ice Box to freeze some google apps(playstore and services). This way you won't get the notifications, but any installed google apps will work. From there you can use Island to activate your work profile and unfreeze those apps in an isolated scope where you can have your Play Store to get apps or you can just use some other app store. You can get more details in the other threads, basically this is the main topic in the whole Mate 30 Pro forum.

the installation of gms is tricky complicated for most users, but it can be done if you want to learn. it works for now but no one knows till when.
the P40 definitely wont have GMS too, so if this is a problem, go with another brand or P30 or mate 20 if you still want huawei.

Gold nugget found! Petal search - find apps

Morning Huawei users!!
I've been using a Huawei P40 Pro for just over two weeks, Been loving the device & I have found a little golden nugget of an app! Its called Petal Search : Find Apps So I had been using App Gallery, APK pure & Aptoid however I have managed to find a new app which basically hubs all of the apps into this one platform and allows downloads via this app without any real redirection for it, its also ad free. So from a set up/new user point of view this is definitely a key app , I would say its a must have! Especially as you don't need to go trawling the whole of the internet for links for up-to-date apps. :good:
Having used it now for the last couple of days and I've made the decision to remove both APK Pure and Aptoid, The Petal Search app is downloadable from Huawei App Gallery and that's it! You can even add it as a search bar widget on a home screen!
Setting it up is as straight forward as can be, Huawei App Gallery , Search for Petal Search, Install. Then once you're installed you are ready start searching.
Have you had any experience with Petal Search?
EAT.SLEEP.TECH.REPEAT
Really god Application
Hi,
I have actually been using this app and have to say it has one major benefit over More Apps. Its reach is very extensive. More Apps focused on most used apps and was a little limited. But Petal search allows for a bigger array of apps due to it pulling from major app platforms. 100% Recommend it
How have you found its overall functionality?
Petal Search is not available in some countries .. had to switch to United Kingdom
Edit ... just installed .. why is this actually any good? most apps just link to apkpure anyway .. might as well just use apkpure
now uninstalled.

Same thoughts here, Probably an employee made the opening post to promote something.
So far Aurora + ApkPure is the best combination for me.

I dont understand .. surely aurora or apkpure is easier than a third party directing (like petal) linking you back to apkpure .. apkpure is not much different to the google play store ... install app, wait for updates, install updates.

I get where you are coming from. Personally i like Petal as it draws from multiple app stores giving larger reach. I think it comes down to personal preference, but still a cool app.

Hi mate - do u use a P40 phone at the moment?
Has Aurora and APK Pure got everything you need? Need to look at Petal to see if itll make life easier or harder!
Aside from the obvious such as Gmail, certain apps from my Mate 20 Pro won't clone over (slightly weird as they did the first time I copied over but after resetting and cloning again, they won't).
I can't find them using any of the appstores either. Would my best bet be to Google the app names and apk and download them? I guess the limitation of this would be that they may not be that recent and I'd have to do periodic manual searches for new updates?

1. you mean google for the apk of the following appstores ... aurora, apkpure, aptoide, amazon appstore, f-droid ... install of these apk and enjoy your new google play store .. they are all pretty much the same.
2. install updates as per your new replacement 'google play store' .. just use apkpure, aurora, aptoide, amazon appstore, f-droid ... I have them all installed and update my apps using a different appstore everyday just for fun.
go to update, select apps, hit update, install .. same as the google play store.

Sorry, I was typing that on my phone whilst trying to walk the dog and think it got a bit muddled! I meant for apps that don't clone over and then cannot be found in those appstores? Would I then search for that app's apk in my browser and try and install it that way? Is that safe?
Weirdly, there were some apps that cloned over absolutely fine from my Mate Pro 20 first time and then I reset my P40 Pro and did it again and suddenly a bunch of apps wouldn't clone over... could this be to do with the fact that first time I just cloned over everything whereas second time, I only cloned over some specific settings as opposed to all?

interesting .. maybe because they are paid apps perhaps, then they are not available on the appstores?
what apps?
you wont be likely to find an apk if it is a paid app ... but if you can find an apk for a paid app, then i guess it will be a hacked high risk option from a dodgy website.
seems like phone-clone trouble shooting & testing is your best option .. or a GMS install.

I've just tried again but there are still a range of apps that won't copy over but it's weird as they did the first time I tried - they are not paid apps either. Some of them are betting apps and others are just general apps such as Tripadvisor, Uber, Citymapper...
Message is 'new phone cannot import this data'

That was more just an example as not all of those apps are available on those stores. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with location services as that appears to be a common denominator for a lot of those apps.

I don't know the answer but all your x3 examples are on the apkpure appstore .. so who cares about the phone-clone? is it better on an appstore, so you can update easily.

If you go on app gallery and download the petal app, ive just searched 'google' and theres a fair few on there that'll do it, diolch.
Thanks, it appears to be the betting apps (e.g. SkyBet that are a bit harder to find, or when found, don't work). I'm still confused as to why lots of the apps transferred over fine last time but won't now.
Going to reset the phone, install Micro-G, clone over my apps and see how I get on with the phone and notifications over the next couple of days and then decide whether I feel I need GMS in order to be able to enjoy the phone.
One thing I will say out of the box is that the battery does not seem as immense as my Mate Pro 20's was when I first bought that... although I suppose cloning everything over is probably quite heavy duty work.

That's the point I was trying to get to, why have loads of different apps when you can have 1 hubbed app.

Which cool apps have you found on HMS to replace GMS?

Hey everyone so last week I bit the bullet and got myself a Huawei P40 Pro coming from a Huawei P30 Pro and have to say the UI so far has been undoubtedly the best so far I reckon more so because its the Huawei hardware, EMUI 10.1 and a clean Android experience.
So far I have Phone Clone'd over the basic apps I need these being all my
- Social Media Apps
- YVLR (YouTube)
- A few work Apps
Netflix and Disney :cyclops:
Just wanted to see what Apps you guys have found on App Gallery to replace GMS apps, I have also seen Petal Search which I am yet to experience but I have only read really good reviews.
Thanks in advance :fingers-crossed:
Petal search will be the one location to find majority of what you need, in terms of cool apps, im just obsessed with tiktok which is found on app gallery, iknow its not an alternative to gms but its brilliant lol

P40 Pro with HMS, No GMS

Hello everyone,
So i have been posting about banking apps how to get them and other apps. I have noticed a lot of people side loading GMS or trying to and was wondering why?
I don't have GMS on my device, I'm happily using HMS as the two are not built to run together. I have all my banking apps, social media, games ect on HMS via Phone clone, App Gallery and Petal search. I still use my Gmail via the Huawei email apps no problems.
Would love everyone's feedback as to why the need for GMS?
I have been temped to load it on myself. The issue for me would be my ease of use with all the apps under one store and not having to rely on your banking to come across from previous phone. Also with the GMS again it is the ease of use knowing I can log on my laptop after and it is synced over, Youtube is a big thing for many people aswell. I used Vanced, which is good but i can't log in and subscribe to channels i am a fan of also it doesn't hold the place in the video you are watching if you need to close the app for various reasons.
I have also considered a side load but tbh there's nothing on gms I that I don't already have on my p3
40 Pro.
When I cross refrenced the Google Services I actually only ever used Photos, Maps and YouTube
For me having these replacements from the get go on my Huawei P40 Pro was a easy transition - Huawei Cloud, Here We Go and YVLR
HMS is bigger and better than I thought, Android OS has helped massively.

YouTube and PlayStore and Barclays are the only sticking points and reasons why I'd want it to be honest!

I am perfectly happy living within Huawei's ecosystem
So Barclays is a go to for me and to have it on my P40 Pro would be amazing I am currently using the weblink saved to device but find myself using Barclays official app on my Huawei M5, I hope Barclays can devolp an app for HMS this side of the year.
GMS is no big requirement for myself I looked at the GMS folder and only every use Photos, Maps and YT all of these have a workaround on HMS, goodbye GMS hello HMS.

Hi, so i would say best approach for a lot of this is,
1 Download petal search, this gives you access to many app stores via one application. Making life easy.
2 Use Huawei ID which you can set up in settings, this allows you to do the same thing you can access your device from a laptop and pull over all the info from your phone which is cool.
3 The banking app i wouldn't say is a massive thing in regards to using Phone Clone, most people will use this app when setting up there new phone to pull your data over. So its not adding any more steps in for set up.
4 I personally just use the browser for YouTube and save it as a shortcut to my home screen. You can log in and when you switch window it saves your place on the video, so if you need to send a text ect this is perfect.
I hope this helps

This big thing i think people are missing is, people swap from IOS to Android every day. They swap from one system to another one, now there's a third option. And if you have seen IOS 14 they are looking to adopt 3rd party apps which is what HMS already offers.

My only gripe for now would be Android Auto which i use daily.

When i have used auto in the passed i have found it very inconsistent. Found waze is the best for maps.
Ive tried a sideloaded mate30 pro and initially I thought it was a wow moment, but after a couple of weeks I realised I wasn't getting the best out of my device especially as it hugely affected the battery performance, and since giving that to my wife and sharking her upgrade to the p40 pro I can say I prefer the HMS device. Shes reset the phone and stripped out GMS or shall i say I did lol and other than the Barclays app we are sorted. I mean utilising phone clone/app gallery/ petal search im completely set up. I was ever so worried about the function of not being able to cast to my chromecast however on my smart tv downstairs I can screen share using the wireless projection function. SO life continues and my device is awesome

Well it depends i dont have issues now with my P40 P but i did with my S20U. Also firmware of the car and a good cable is important. For now it is stable.
TBH it might have just been the car that was the issue. Always use the cable that is provided with the device.

What car do you drive? I have an Audi atm and have just had zero luck getting it to work either on older GMS devices. I'll continue to angle my phone in the cup holder.... I heard rumours of something called HiCar coming later down the line? :cyclops:

P40 Pro Apps

So I've had my Huawei P40 Pro for a couple weeks now. The lovely people in my local phone shop helped me to set my phone up by phone cloning my apps and data from my Huawei P30 Pro.
Apart from Phone Cloning what other ways of getting apps are there? And what are some of your favourite apps on your P40 devices?
Best way is to check app gallery first but while on there download petal search which will be your main source for finding the remaining apps that you need
Aurora store is also good as it downloads apps straight from Google Play. APK Pure is another alternative.
