Nova launcher not smooth animation on OPN - OnePlus Nord Questions & Answers

Hi,
I just got my OPN and overall I'm very happy with it. One thing is bugging me: the grid size on the home screen limited to 5x6 with OxygenOS. I therefore installed Nova Launcher and configured the grid to my liking. But Nova introduces a not so smooth animation when going from an app to the home screen (swipe up gesture). With OxygenOS the animation is smooth and quick, with Nova some delay is added.
I have tried to override animations with Nova, but it doesn't seem to work, it's stuck on the system default animation.
Anyone else noticed that behavior in Nova?
Bonus question: Since that animation is really annoying me, is there a way to add grid sizes to OxygenOS?

I use Lawnchair, no issues...

I've just tried Lawnchair and the closing app animation is definitely not as smooth as with OnePlus launcher. It's way slower and there is a screen blink/refresh.

Hmm, what refresh rate do you use? Might it be because of it? I use 60Hz, and I have no issue...

Let me guess: you are using gesture navigation and the problem does not occur when you switch to the onscreen buttons?
It's a Android 10 thing, not OnPlus' fault.

That's correct Piotrekk! Switching to onscreen buttons and the problem disappears. I remember now that I had the same problem on my Mate 20 Pro and that I removed a package via ADB to solve the problem...

How exactly did you do that?

adw launcher: slow rotation (due to widgets?)

I'm experiencing very slow screen rotation when I re-orientate my Tab, especially on my main home screen.I have two widgets and a bunch of icon on there, and if I turn my Tab 90° it takes around 3-4 seconds to react, then I get a black screen for another second or two, then the icons re-appear, then another second later, the widgets.
I get the impression that the rotation is quicker on a homescreen with no widgets but full of icons, but it's still rather slow.
The original launcher also isn't really amazingly fast on rotation, but it's a good deal faster than adw. In the (native) browser, screen rotation is almost instantaneous, btw.
Does anyone have a suggestion how to speed up the rotation on the homescreen? It's annoying like this, because the Tab is often in landscape orientation when I take it out of my coat pocket, then I have to wait several seconds before it'll react to anything.

Not really. It's using quite a bit of RAM (~24MB) but only about 0.9% CPU.
Btw, here's a short video to illustrate what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sjpum75xpZk
(Sorry for the bad quality, shot with my trusty old G1 - btw, I'm rotating Portrait -> Landscape in the Video, but the video is rotated 90°)
I'm currently using adw.launcher and my rotation is perfectly fine with lcd density changes and widgets stretched and multiples on single screens.
It's odd that yours is so very slow. Did you root it and do the lag fix? Or do you have a scrolling widget active and have it forcing draw on orientation? Maybe use ti backup and check your running processes.

funny, I tested 2 widgets yesterday (1 clock + 1 bat) and i notice rotating screen would be sluggish, so i checked ADW cpu usage was jumping around 50-80%
i ended up removing both widgets, and have not experienced it again..
And if u go thru the adw-settings and turn off all the eyecandy and restart what happens then?

Rooted yes (z4root) but no lag fix...which one would you recommend?
Also, I just notice that it gets quite a bit quicker when I use one of the stock wallpapers instead of my own 1200x1024 image. Looking into that now.
Have u tried switching back to stock launcher to compare if the same issue apears, or ex. Zeam launcher?
i recommend no lagfix...never testet it.

Ok, so the wallpaper seems to be the main culprit. When using a stock wallpaper, both adw and the stock launcher perform about equally. I've also applied the OCLF, but don't notice any difference.
Did u notice the dpi for your custom background, maybe scale it down to 72dpi if its higher..
those who tested the lagfix on the tab did not notice anything either, but higher bench scores..
There is often a considerable amount of lag when switching from portrait (my main use) to landscape (mostly used for reading PDF or EPUB text, and sometimes for web-browsing). Clearly the refresh of shortcut icons and widgets appears to be the culprit, it doesn't seem related to background rendering. I tried various combinations of graphical settings, to no avail. I am running 200 LCD density, but I had the same problem with the original value (240).
Note: I use ADW.Launcher mainly because of the "categories/groups" feature, which makes it a *lot* easier to organize my 200+ applications. The other features are pretty much the same as all the other launchers.
People say the lag fix is unecessary since stock tab is quite snappy, but i recently uninstalled it and noticed a slow down with redraws on my screens with adw.launcher. Agreed though any launcher will slow down with more icons/widgets. Especially those that have been stretched by adw
Sent from my SGH-T849 using XDA App
ADWLauncher - I turn off the animations and turn the delays and
overshoot down as far as they will go. I also make the drawer
background flat black with no transparency. Makes for a VERY fast
launcher. I also set the "System persistent" option in "System
Preferences". That seems to help keep Android from killing it off.
Returning to home is dawn near instant now.
System animations (Settings->Display->Animation) is set to "No
Animations". Again, makes things faster and I get bored watching the
redraws.

Go Launcher EX home flicker issue

Hey guys,
So I recently started using go launcher ex and I really like it with the exception that whenever the keyboard was used, going back to home screen makes it flicker for a second.
The screen basically resizes but it's a visible hiccup and I dont like it.
Anyone else experience this?
I tried different keyboards but they all do it...
Any idea how to fix it?
I don't have that problem. However I did using adw launcher

Phone performance

I disabled the "Turn over to mute" and "Turn over to activate" settings under Settings > Gestures and i would swear my phone is actually performing better than what it was. Can anyone confirm this for me?
It could be a placebo but I notice it. I had already turned off flip to snooze on mine but left flip to mute on. I had lag when changing from Chrome back to the Homescreen prior to turning off the flip to mute setting. After turning it off it did not lag. In an attempt to recreate the issue I cleared the memory and did it again with no apps running in the background as a baseline and had lag with flip to mute on vs off when going from Chrome back to the homescreen. Also tested it when opening and scrolling through the app drawer. I can't wait for 5.1 update, if it comes...
After switching to Apex launcher, and turning off the other two gestures in the Settings, I have had no instances of missed double taps. It was pretty reliable to begin with, but yes, I was noticing some drops. But those are now gone.
I know everyone is complaining of UI lag - which is indeed present. However I decided to do a more real world test. I loaded up WatchESPN, OSMonitor, Play Store,
Gmail, Firefox (with Engadget open), Two camera apps, Hangouts, Play Newsstand, HBO Go, Google Photos, ES File Explorer, N7 Music Player, YouTube and MX Player. After loading all these up one after another, I started Nokia Here Maps - and asked it to locate an address on the other side of town and compute point to point directions to it. It took what seemed like a blink of an eye, and it was back with the route. I then turned WiFi off ( so that it cannot hand over the task to a server in the cloud ) , and asked it to compute another route, and again it was back within a second, with multiple route alternatives. So - to me - this is a more real life use case - I will actually be using the device a lot in this fashion - and for that - it is performing quite well. In general I have noticed that the UI lag does not get worse with the number of apps loaded. So when it come to real heavy lifting, I think the device is doing pretty well .
There is a YouTube video out there today, which is claiming that the Alcatel did better than a Galaxy S6 in running multiple 3D games simultaneously. I will myself never play any games on this device . For my applications - I find the performance satisfactory. Of course, this clearly has all the 5.0 performance issues, which I am hoping will clear up with 5.1 / 5.2 update.
You may want to go under developer options and try things such as disabled the animation scales or lowering them from 1.0 to .5 and possibly enabling gpu decoding of 2d content.....disabling the animation will give the ui response a bit of snappiness.
If you are running nova launcher it has it's own animation settings under "look and feel" and you can choose the "faster than light" option....I disable all the animations...I'm interested in gettings things done..not gimicks and "flash". I'm sure apex has similar settings.

I already have animations down to 0.5 - I am not touching anything else there. Apex has a setting to speed up some animations as well.
What is a good way to test the browser ? I am using Firefox - with adblock plus.

When the phone is rooted I'll use adaway....what exactly do you want to "test"? I use lightning+ browser(lightning browser (without the +) is free) which is always nice and snappy.
I've found, that turning of the OS "vibrate" on tap functions seems to have improved performance for me. At the very least it feels better. I feel like i was getting 2 different vibrations when using keyboard, and it would double tap things by accident as a result. You also need to independently turn off vibration on the keyboard if you want it gone completely.
Has anyone noticed that transition animation scale keeps on reverting back to 1x after it has been set to 0.5x ? Does this qualify as a bug ? Or is there something I am missing ?
BTW - even with the third party launcher, I am getting unresponsive double-tap ( wake only ) occasionally, and unset/set the option always brings it back. This is something that Alcatel should be able to fix - clearly a software issue.

I'm using this phone since three days ago and I immediately noticed this issue, and it is specially annoying when I try to use swipe writing. I suspected that occurs because the system doesn't know if your are trying to write using the keys located at the edges of the screen like q, p, etc. or just using gestures. In consequence I tried to adapt the keyboard using the one hand feature (Google keyboard) and putting it in the center of the screen and it worked, the lag disappear. I'm attaching a screenshot because my English sucks. I hope you can see this way what I did.
I tried turning on 'Show virtual keyboard' in Settings > Languages & input > Physical keyboard, and it seems much better for me now.

I have already reported to MIUI team but while they do something about it, i've installed Edge Gestures to replace full screen mode, to hide navbar i've installed Navigation Gestures and finally AutoNotification for hidding apps in background notification. I have lost gestures animations but works perfect and the only issue it's volume bar in landscape like the image attached.
This is a nightmare and makes the device horrible to use.
I reported it to MIUI team weeks ago. The best solution for now is disable vibration on keypress within Google Keyboard, which makes it way less noticeable.
I'm using miui 10 weekly on eu roms, the problem is still there...
I'm on xiaomi.eu 8.8.3 and it seems like it has been solved through software update. I no longer have the issue testing in sketch app, or using any keyboard with full screen gestures.

Things i'd like to see fixed in the next update (L29)

Overall this phone has been way above expectations. There are a few quirks that hopefully will get addressed in a future update and hopefully Huawei is watching...
1. USB charging from laptop/desktop/car. It trickle charges at 200ma, most other phones charge at 1 amp and up connected to my car. Same with my laptop. Not having good charging in the car is a problem because I cannot use another charger with Android Auto, I have to have it plugged into the car's USB port. All my other phones would get at least 1 AMP charging rates, I don't need super charging or anything, but 1 amp or what the car can support out would be nice.
2. Camera crashing. I have to reboot the phone almost every day because I go to fire up the camera app and it cannot connect to the camera. I am not a heavy camera users either, but I do use video chatting about an hour a day. Basically all the cameras front and back just go offline after some use.
3. Using a 3rd party launcher like Nova, it's fairly buggy, but it sounds like this fix is already in the works so we'll leave it at that.
4. When using gesture navigation the left and right swipes for back need to be physically lowered on the screen to say the bottom third. There are a few apps that need this swiping action (Google play) that will close. I have to do the swipe way way up high to get the phone to not invoke the back button.
5. Less aggressive background task killing. I still have some things that get killed once in a while even with all the appropriate things set.
6. Some sort of on screen notification light or alert in conjunction with the always on screen so we can visually see at a glace if there is a message waiting. Just a simple flashing dot in the corner would do.
The only other thing I had noticed and this only happened once so might be a fluke was that the alarm clock failed to play my custom alarm tone, it instead played some fairly quiet beeping noise. Not good if you rely on the alarms waking you up.
The bugs I would like to see fixed are the gestures as well and the systemUI issue when using the minimum width setting in developer options and the fact that it resets after every reboot. Ive never had a camera issue with my device so I'm not sure if it's just related to something you have installed or just a glitch as I factory reset mine after I got it. Double tap to wake would be nice also.
What's buggy about Nova Launcher? It's working perfectly on my end.

Double tap to wake is a good one...
Nova Launcher - when swiping up to go to the home screen, most of the time it actually goes to the recent tasks. But I thought others that didn't use gestures had alot more issues?
I will clear data and cache on the camera app and see if that does any thing.... Possibly its the Line app I use for video chatting as that uses the camera alot.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. The Huawei gestures still run and work. If I swipe in from the right edge up high above the Fluid Gestures region the Huawei gesture does kick off unfortunately.
But I am able to disable the Huawei gestures completely and this is now working good. Especially since with Fluid I can disable only the left gesture, which make sliding out the Google Play drawer from the left work great now without closing the app.

It disables the apps. Just remove the launcher and the small Huawei things like email or whatever you don't use. You can leave everything else to be safe.
I'd like to see some camera updates.
The portrait mode for both the front and rear cameras are subpar. They don't perform as well as the GCam found on the 6T, let alone the actual GCam on Pixel phones.
I'm also experiencing Bluetooth issues with my headphones. They'll connect but audio will be significantly chopped up and delayed. I have to disconnect them and reconnect sometimes, and last time I had to unpair them.
Also would like to see better use of screen real estate. It looks bad having 5 quick setting tiles per row on such a big phone. 6 or even 7 would look great.

They are off by default, It's under System Navigation.
Just leave Three-key navigation on and the system won't do gestures, then in fluid you do the ADB permissions to enable it to hide the Huawei bar.
UPDATE
So after using the phone for a while now, I'd like to update my original list of things that need addressing....
1. The constant crashing with the camera appears to have been fixed with a factory reset, so that is now fixed!
2. With Fluid Gestures it seems we have a decent work around for gesture controls with 3rd party launchers.
3. Less aggressive background task killing. I still have things once in a while that don't notify me on time with messages. When I open the app then the notifications come right in, this tells me the app is getting killed in the background. (Happens most frequently with the messaging app "Line")
4. I'd still really like some sort of notification icon on the screen with the always on screen, but I guess that's not a huge deal.
5. Really the only major thing is the USB charging at super slow speeds from my laptop or in the car. 200ma is just way too slow and is not like any other phone charging from the same sources.

Do you have the width setting in developer options on something other than the default? I noticed the camera crashed a lot when I had it set to 600 dp. Now I left it back to the default of 423 dp (text and screen at smallest settings). Icons and screen settings are still too big for me but everything is working fine.
Praying for root soon.
