USB c to HDMI video out - Motorola Edge Questions & Answers

I just received this phone and overall I really like it. Except, I tried connecting the phone to a monitor using a USB c adapter. Does this phone not have a video out chip? It's actually a feature I like to use (coming from an LG v30). I'm just wondering if a workaround or anything is possible to connect to a TV or monitor through a cable.

Funny, I actually have. I work in a computer repair/data recovery shop and we have a phone in with a broken screen/lcd. Long story short is that the device did not work with the phone we got it for, nor my phone (Galaxy S5), and I know my MHL works on my phone but we needed KB/Mouse support as well.
It may have been a bunk device and we haven't requested a replacement yet, so If you try it out let me know if yours works, and when we get our replacement i'll let you know.
actually the seller replied to me and says that this cannot do hdmi and otg at the same time but apparently this dock does : http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=ite...obalID=EBAY-US&ssPageName=ADME:X:ACME:US:1123

Unfortunately I don't think so, I used this:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Lindy-73391-...6?pt=DE_Computer_Sonstige&hash=item462bc81bb0
with a s4, and it worked prperly, but when connected to s5 it doesn't even turns on. I think it is because s5 doesn't have a docking mode, in fact if you go in Settings-->accessories, there is only an option for sound on hdmi, while in s4 there were more (and one was for the docking mode)
I couldn't find anything that worked reliably and consistently. So I use the MHL for HDMI output and use a Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse...

This is a good solution, but I'm wondering why, since 11 pin connectors usually can handle hdmi and usb otg on the same time, why old dock stations for 11 pin device don't work?
using micro 3.0 for MHL and OTG
i have a SM-G900P and if i make a OTG and MLH cable through usb 3.0 do you think i could charge and use HDMI and 2 usb for keyboard and mouse. My goal is to make my phone like a mini computer on the go for my roms and movies
Possibly use the USB 3.0 Micro-b connection?
All my googling on this matter with the S5 seems to lead to one inevitable conclusion, the S5 won't allow for simultaneous MHL and OTG use, because the S5 uses the 5pin connector and not the 11pin connector (as the S4 seemed to). What I don't understand is, isn't the S5 using USB 3.0 instead of the USB 2.0 as on the S4? How could the S5 allow for faster data transfer rates and yet not be able to transfer more types of data at once?
Isn't there a way to utilize the entire USB 3.0 micro-b format (which apparently has 10 pins, 5 for backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 (except 5pin, and not 11pin), and 5 extra for USB 3.0 speeds) to use MHL and OTG and charging simultaneously?

I'm having an issue with MHL adapter on my S5, When I connect my MHL adapter to my S5, the audio on my TV seems delayed, but when I tried it on my S3, the audio is perfectly fine. Is this something to do with S5 having 5 pin only wherein S3 having 11pin?
I saw a 5 pin to 11 pin converter on Amazon, will this solve this issue? And possibly the issue of not being able to use MHL/HDMI and USB at the same time?
buy chrome cast you can screen mirror or use almost any app directly to the tv when it comes to videos and such theres a little allshare
button at the top of like the video player, you tube etc.
also a smart tv does the same thing only better (all the above scenarios will only work with a connected network)
what is wrong with the image quality?
Chromecast works for me at home or anywhere it has standard wifi, but is too painful in most hotels that use a web user login. Without net access it was almost useless last time I tried. I could pair with it, but it wouldn't stream local files from my device. Most places I've stayed in the last few years have an active HDMI port on their tv, so the MHL HDMI and OTG with USB wireless mouse on an S3 worked for me, even though I couldn't charge at the same time. Haven't been able to make that work so far with anything I've tried on the S5.
Still no luck with S5 docking (MHL+OTG)
Hello!
I've been using this adapter for a while with a Samsung Galaxy S4:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/MHL-...or-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-S4-Note/32461052976.html
Charging, HDMI connection and USB keyboard + mouse works very nice.
Unfortunately no luck with S5. Not even charging works. I read S5 doesn't use 11-pin USB (because of the USB 3.0 plug, etc...). If that's true, then not even installing a custom ROM would make the docking work.
According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57336973&postcount=4, "the G800F is capable of USB OTG. It simply is not enabled in the stock firmware." I know this is about a S5 Mini, but wouldn't it be the same for the S5?

About USB OTG

Hi guys, a friend of mine have and old Samsung android based phone.
I was thinking about give it a better use as an android tv box/media player, but I have a few questions, main concerning USB OTG.
I could use a USB OTG Y cable, so I could charge the phone while using it, and still have the OTG... could I connect an USB hub to the OTG so I could use a USB mini keyboard and a mouse?.
My other problem is the micro usb port and the HDMI conection to the TV. I could use a cable to connect the phone to the TV but then I couldn't connect the USB OTG. It's possible to connect HDMI and still use USB OTG???

Well... just so you know you can't have the phone charging and in OTG mode in the same time. Not even with adapters. This is because the current in USB can't flow in both directions in the same time (because there aren't enough dedicated wires)

Why not use a chrome cast?
use this usb c hub its the best by far, the only adapter to do 4k 60hz for gaming needs etc but only bad thing is its got usb 2.0 port instead of usb 3.0 which is a bottleneck for hi speed file transfer needs. but other than that it does everything you need it to do like act as a ultra low power 4k 60hz tv box, ultra low power 4k 60 hz gaming rig(emulators etc) and offcourse charging all at the same time via quick charge 3.0 thats 30 watts max. my setup consists of 2x usb gamepad, 4k 60hz hdmi tv with HDR, a 500GB external 2.5"inch hard drive. a usb keyboard and a wireless 2.4ghz mouse all with this adapter oh and another secondary usb 2.0 hub with power and sd card etc connected to the first hub.

you may have initial problems setting up all your devices and enabling enough power to power the phone and the devices so always use powered usb hubs so you dont create a situation where the battery drain is larger than the power being provided. i had to fiddle around to find the sweet spot. for example i realised there are different scenarios when connecting the devices to usb type c hubs. some for example this one im using from scan needs the power charger to be connected the last after connecting hmdi and usb if not done last the power provided is much less or the drain is much higher. when you connect the power leade to the adapter the hdmi display gets cut out and you have to then reconnect the hdmi display to re enable it. i have tested a few of these usb type c hubs with hdmi etc they all seems to have this problem they wont all (display, charge, usb) work when connected at the same time for example connect the devices and display and charge to the hub then connect the hub to the phone, you have to re insert it into the hub after disconnecting it to enable it.
after fiddling around with different combinations for a few days now i have finally been successfull with having a usb external hard drive, hdmi 4k 60hz display and a keyboard and mouse and phone having enough charge to stay on green led while i do everything such as web browse, play games, watch 4k and use keyboard and mouse on my htc u11.
ive noticed when i was using a standard cheap usb optical mouse those with flashing lit leds on all the time caused my charging power to drop so after changing the mouse for a optical 2.4ghz usb mouse it seems to have increased the power for charging which nipped it in the bud for me and my setup. now my htc u11's charge led stays green all the time.
further from my experiments i realised some methods of connecting caused quick charge 3.0 to work but as soon as it reached 100% charge the charge power would drop so slow battery drain would start to happen while other scenarios reduced this battery charge drop rate and was slower in draining. heres another scenario when i plugged everything the display the charger and the usb external hard drive to the scan club 3d dock the hard drive wouldnt work at first then i realised my external hdd was formatted ntfs since it allows large file sizes for 4k movies. then i had to format the external hdd as exfat since ntfs is not recognised in android only fat 32 and exfat. fat 32 dosent allow file sizes above 4gb while exfat and nts do so exfat was the best option for formatting my external hdd since it was recognised by wndows and android. second problem factor i had was that not all secondary hubs would work. i first tried a usb 3.0 4 x port hub (not extrenally powered) and a cheap 4 x port usb 2.0 hub but they wouldnt work with my external usb 3.0 hdd the drive would appear in file explorer but wouldnt show its contents. so then i finally got a usb 2.0 hub with sd card and external power and 3 x usb 2.0 ports and that worked!!! so when connecting a secondary usb hub its most likely needs to be externally powered.
with the new usb type c 3.1 port comes lots of bugs that need to be hammered out on the software firmware level before its all totally plug and play. my htc and the scan club 3d hub didnt work too well at first but after a few htc u11 firmware updates things were alot smoother.

Hi there,
I ordered this one for Amazon "USB C Hub, Excelvan 5 in 1 USB Type C Hub HDMI 4K Transfer with 3 USB 3.0 Ports Power Delivery for new MacBook / MacBook Pro 2015/2016, Smartphoe, Tablet and other USB C Port Equipped Devices" (can't post link as I'm a new user)
I plug in but get nothing it lists support for the HTC 10 which I thought used the same standard.
My phone is on Oreo, can anyone verify HDMI out works for Oreo still?
Is there anything required to make it work other than plugging in? The USB ports work so thats a start. Also I wonder, the devices I'm plugging in only support 1080p so do I need to change the phone resolution first or should the phone do that automatically?
Thanks in advance!
I purchased another cable and it works! So Oreo isn't an issue.
For those interested the cable purchased was from Ebay UK, search for "Type C USB To HDMI HDTV Cable External Display Adapter for HTC U Ultra U11 10"

As in topic, does asus zenfone 6 have ability to stream out video through usb to hdmi adapter?
After some time android q will come to this device and it will contain native desktop mode so i would like to use it.
I'd like to know the answer as well.
Is it USB 3+ that can do video over type C?
For example One+ 6 has only USB 2.0 over type C, and doesn't support video, while Samsung has USB 3.1 over type C as expected that supports video over type C.
Sure simple type C to HDMI adapter will be needed.
I wasn't able to find any specs for Zen6 type C at all.

According to GSMarena it's 2.0.
I looked at the USB diagrams and it appears that alternate modes over USB-C use the same pins as SuperSpeed meaning that you can't have alternate mode without the other (but not vice versa).
Unless I'm missing something, there shouldn't be any display mode. However I'm not sure if the GSMarena data sheet is accurate.
I currently have sony xperia z3 compact which has usb 2.0 (micro usb, but this doesn't make change IIRC) and also support mhl (see gsmarena https://m.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z3_compact-6538.php). In my opinion it doesn't depend on version of usb which device is equiped with, at least it 's not the main reason for not supporting mhl. The question is, does mhl work on zenfone 6 with (potentially, because i couldn't find any information on asus website) usb 2.0 type c connector?

Display output via microusb worked differently as the regular port does not have the pins or bandwidth for it. I had an LG G2 which could also output a display signal. I think it's possible to do the same via USB-C but at the same time I think it's simpler to use alternate mode hence the conclusion I came up with. If I have the time I'll go digging around some more later.
I opened a ticket with ASUS support and they state none of the models they currently sell (including Zenfone 6) cand output HDMI over usb-C.
they might be stupid though, because ROG phone does.

I looked at a few things and I think I was correct in my first post. While I think it would be technically possible to implement MHL on USB-C like they did on MicroB (it would just piggyback off the necessary pins like it used to do), it doesn't seem like it would make sense to do that and I can't find an adapter/cable that would work in that scenario so you'd need 3.1 because they all require Alternate Mode support. However Alternate Mode is an optional spec so just because a device supports 3.1 doesn't mean it'll support display functionality.
I should also note that the ROG Phone has USB-C 3.1 according to GSMArena.
Another note is that it appears that MHL officially lists MHL as working on USB-C via Alternate Mode.
Meanwhile ASUS launching an external display that is advertised to support input from a mobile phone, but hey, no their latest flagship. they are so dumb they are launching devices that don't their other devices..
why would anyone cheap on using usb2.0 connector, when internally SD855 supports 3.1 and so does UFS2.1, is beyond me. It must save la 0.something to use 2.0 instead of 3.1

The OnePlus 6 does support HDMI out with a DisplayLink adapter. It's not great though, as you can't charge it at the same time and it runs the battery down incredibly fast, less than two hours.
Thanks for confirming it, it's a real downer situation though, I was really expecting to have the possibility to output videos through HDMI and potentially do the same with emulators + bluetooth joysticks (since it can handle even gamecube/wii games thanks to the SD855)

IIRC video output via Displaylink adapter works on every device if it can install displaylink app. Displaylink support doesn't depend on mhl support on specific device. I'm just to clarifying for internet strangers.

I'm right there with you buddy. I was so used to MHL that I never questioned whether newer phones would support it or the type-c equivalent. Trying to find a SD855 phone that charges while outputting video is hard enough, let alone one that's rootable with a headphone jack and a non-curved screen (my preference). I'm beginning to think we're going to have to wait until the holiday season when the ROG Phone 2 comes out. In the meantime I'm half-satisfied by using my tablet (shield) hooked to a monitor and keeping my emulator folders synced with my phone with Dropbox/SyncThing.

Also 90hz screen, headphone jack, 5000ma battery, SD 855, it even has a CPU fan lol. It's newly out but I think you can install twrp and root it but customs ROMs might be few if any. It's the closest phone I've found to meeting my needs of 3.5mm, SD 855 and HDMI. Only thing it's missing is expandable really.

Hi, any news? Has anyone bought a displaylink product and used it working with the Zenphone 6?

Oneplus 7 HDMI dock

Hi,
I want to buy the oneplus 7.
Can you confirm this phone has HDMI output ? Some people say it does only work with op7 pro.
If you manage to make it work, can you tell me which dock did you use ?
Thanks,
I dont know about hdmi (i havent a cable to test) but ScreenCast(aka Miracast, aka mirror your screen by wifi) work much better than op3, more quality, stability and less lag [i test it with same tv, same wifi only diferent is the phone]
oneplus 7 supports HDMI out via USB type C port

Amazon Basics USB C to HDMI adapter and then normal HDMI
I have a HAMA dock from a usb c to HDMI/usb c/2x 3.0 usb A ports. It does output video and audio, the charging and video output is kinda fiddly. Tried getting the AMPERE app from playstore to get a reading on the charge current but it doesn't seem to detect it charging although i do think the phone is getting power. (I guess 900ma, that's what;s written on the back side of the dock). While charging and video output i managed to plug an usb stick and it worked. Tried plugging a usb mouse but for some reason it did not work.
