Enable MTP or transfer files with broken screen - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
I had Oneplus 6 for the last couple of years (stock recovery, no-root), and the screen shattered last week. since then I bought a new phone, but I can’t extract files from the old device.
The main problem is the MTP options is not checked, as well as USB debugging therefore I don't have access to it with the windows explorer . However, I think the touch is still works (at least at the bottom of it) and beside the screen – the OP6 is fully functional and my PC recognize it.
I tried to enable it via ADB, but the device is not authorized. What can I do to get my vids and pics back?

I guess the question is how broken is your phone? You cannot use adb, I think, until you enable usb debugging in developer options. To enable developer options you need to go to "about the phone" and click on build number like 7 times.
You can try uploading to google drive, or maybe use a bluetooth/maybe even usb mouse
EDIT:
I googled your problem, and this person recommends using an accessibility feature. Maybe this could help?
Hi, i had the same problem and i was going nuts with it. But i found a solution! As long as your digitizer still works, you press both up and down volume buttons at the same time for 3 seconds, and it will activate the talk back mode. You'll have to get used to it, because it's a bit finicky, but once you understand the mechanics of it, you connect your oneplus to a PC, through a USB cable, go to configurations, bluetooth & connections, USB options and select file transfer. Once you do that, you'll have access to your phone internal drive in the computer.
Hope this was helpfull!

Hey and thank you for your answer. Actually it sounds like a decent solution, but pressing the volume buttons did not turn on the talkback mode =\

Uh, that sucks. It only works once the phone is unlocked. So if you did that, made sure that you volume is on, you are not connected to Bluetooth headphones or anything like that then I donno. You might have to convince a local repair shop to give you a loner screen to get your data out for a reduced price or something. Or try clicking blindly in the right spots. Or maybe somebody comes along with a better idea.
Android phones do not support external displays, right?

I don't know about the displays, but I'll go to a lab tomorrow because i ran out of ideas
thank you for your help, I appreciate your time mate :good:

[Q] Have you ever seen a grown man cry over a TF300t digitizer issue?

Backstory:
My buddy bought 3 ASUS tf300t tablets online with broken screens. Unbeknownst to us they have this weird firmware issue because ASUS is lame and doesn't care about backwards compatibility. I've been trying to fix these tablets for a few weeks now and I'm just spinning myself in circles and getting frustrated. 1 of them is rooted with CWM recovery so that's the one I'm working on.
The issue:
According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091233&page=11 I can simply adb into the device copy the proper firmware to it's set directory, delete the old firmware, run the firmware update command and touch will be restored.
So how does one use adb without usb debugging enabled?
I tried through CWM, adb worked, but I can't get superuser to work, nor could I get the touch_firmware_update command to work.
So I downloaded the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893714&highlight=root stock rom with usb debugging enabled. I flashed that rom and my computer brings up the normal TF300t drivers for MTP.
ADB doesn't see any devices...
I tried manually replacing those drivers with the ADB drivers from google because I'm a touch retarded and I thought it would work. My mom says that I'm super smart and really handsome, but I feel like she lies to me.
There's just so many new terms and I've spent so many hours on it that frankly, if search did bring up the answer, I would miss it.
I'd appreciate any help, and if you help me fix it, I'll make a youtube video thanking you in the creepiest way possible.
-Thanks

Short of investing 60 bucks on a docking keyboard, your best bet would be to get a usb dongle that allows you to plug in a keyboard so you can be sure debugging is ticked. Otherwise, if it's enabled and you've installed the proper drivers, Windows should see your device. From there, it's a breeze, if the hardware is good. You don't have to do Youtube. Just stop crying, Gives me the creeps.

Yep, your only for sure way would be a USB OTG adapter or a dock. Heres the adapter in the US for 10 bucks shipped on eBay. This will let you use any regular USB mouse instead of the touch screen
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-to-OTG-...ablet_eReader_Accessories&hash=item41700957d7
Heres another for 4 more bucks that gives you Two USB ports :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-40-Pin...ablet_eReader_Accessories&hash=item3cce7dd4c8
Also you can try giving this a shot ....http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/
Its an app that pushes your phones screen to your desktop so you can use a keyboard and mouse on it. Not sure if it will work for you since im sure it needs debugging on, but also worth a shot. I use MyMobiler on mine but it needs to be set up on the device itself first. This looks plug and play but says it has slow refresh rates.
As far as the ADB drivers, Im using the universal drivers found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2139767 and everything works as it should . Try those out
Oh and one more thing.. You might be able to use fastboot to push a touchpanel firmware zip. This is a different device, but you could try it :

Screen doesn't work and I need to get my pictures off

Hi there, My nexus 5 is having screen issues and the screen basically doesn't function due to what I can only assume is a bad connection on the mainboard ( if I press in the right area with the back cover off the screen will flicker and work a tiny bit if I reboot the phone.) My issue is I still have tons of pictures that are very dear to me on the device and need to get them off of it. When I connect it to my pc (windows 7) it connects and shows up as a nexus 5 device but nothing will appear in the folder. Im fairly certain I have the correct drivers installed as well. So how can I get it to connect properly with having basically no access to the screen? Ill even paypal you $5 if your answer works for me, thanks
Did you enable USB debugging? Did you enable MTP when connected to a computer? Is the computer a trusted device?

must have at some point because i connected it to a computer in the past, no idea and i dont know how to, and i dont know.
If the the phone is running a stock ROM and has a lock screen PIN, pattern, or password, you probably need to unlock the phone and select MTP as the USB option in order to have the Nexus 5 files appear in Windows Explorer.
If you have access to another N5, you could swap motherboards, copy the data, and swap motherboards again.

Data Recovery Galaxy S7 with broken screen

Hey guys and gals, so my brother has broken his S7, the LCD and touch are gone, the phone still turns on and it can connect through usb no problem for backing up music and photos, but he needs his contacts, sms and call logs, something usually done with superbackup or similar apps, but obviously they aren't available,
I've tried the official Samsung apps like smart-switch, but they require me to click yes to a pop up on the screen which I obviously cant do, my idea was to use a USB OTG cable with a usb hub, plug in a mouse and use a home made USB A to USB A cable to connect it to the pc at the same time and click randomly to hopefully hit yes, but frankly that sounds so stupid and doesn't seem likely to work (but I will try it if I have no other option)
my next idea was to use one of the many data recovery apps, however despite what almost every page states, none of them support the S7, just the S6 and lower and a few of the tab and note devices, so at this point im out of ideas, the phone doesnt have Root or usb debugging enabled so no hopes of ADB or anything,
any ideas here?
Thanks guys!
Use SydeSync or app like visor (Chrome add-on) to cast your phone screen to PC.
If you needed to install these apps to your mobile phone, you can install them via google play store on PC.
When you connect your mobile phone to internet, it will automatically be installed to your mobile phone.
Then you can cast your screen to your PC.
Sorry, I did not read the last sentence you wrote "No USB Debugging enabled".
Sorry...
Seen this asked quite a few times, doesn't seem like many solutions, basically if it's deadly important, fix the screen
Contacts should be on contacts.google.com

Unable to connect to PC in any mode

Hi all, I'm afraid I already know the answer to my question but I'll still ask if there's even a slight chance to get this fixed on my own.
I had this issue on Android 8.1 where my Pixel kept saying "Supplying power to connected device via USB" even without anything connected to it, (it started doing that one day without any reason) tapping the notification allowed me to switch to "Charge this device" and then turn on MTP mode, battery life was terrible but I wasn't that much bothered by it because I am an Android developer so I kept it connected in USB Debugging mode most of the time anyway.
When I got the notification for Android 9 update I decided to update hoping it'd fix the USB issue but after the update it now always says "Charging connected device" and tapping the notification does bring up the "USB Preference" screen and it allows me to switch to "USB Controlled by this device" and it starts charging but there's no way to switch "Charge only" mode to anything else, ADB does not see it, fastboot does not see it and there's no persistent notification on the phone about it being connected via USB at this point (in any mode). My understanding is that this is a hardware issue but Oreo still allowed me to workaround this and get the USB debugging connected.
Is there anyway I can get back to Oreo without using fastboot flash or any other solution to this?
Thanks for reading.
PS. I'm on Ubuntu but I can access a Windows machine if required and bootloader is already unlocked.
I'm curious if you're able to connect to a USB OTG storage device.
I'm having this issue connecting it to my windows 10 laptop.. the cable recognizes it.. starts charging.. shows option on phone to change type of connection.. but not matter which one i change it too, the computer will not pull lit up as a drive to see the files..

Same here! I plug the cable into the Windows 10 computer, I even can change the mode from charging to MTP file transfer, but the device won't show up in the Windows Explorer. It appears under connected devices though.
My Pixel 2 XL would not connect to PC for file browsing if USB debugging of Android Apps was enabled in developer settings. Didn't matter which option I chose to connect. IDK if that is expected or not, but it took me a while to figure out. Happened Spring 2018, idk if Google fixed it.

I don't think i've tried to turn that mode off.. i'm so used to needing it on for the computer to recognize and connect to all my previous Android Devices.. thanks for the recommendation...

Couldn't find any OTG cable to try that but strangely enough a few days back I connected it to PC for charging and Nautilus popped up, same cable, same USB port and it started working all of sudden. Did verify with a couple of other cables and different ports and everything is working fine since.
"Charging connected device" notification never appeared again, only thing different (when it started working again) was that I was out of the air conditioned room most of those days, might it be moisture or something like that?
I'm back to my normal routine for a few days now and it's still 100% normal, will have to see if it stays that way.
Sorry for late response.
Here's an update in case someone else runs into this situation, I can say this with 99% certainty that is caused by the blackish residue build-up around the USB port over time. It's not too much that it's visible just by looking into the port but it's enough to make the device behave like this.
Here's what I did to get rid of it, took a match stick (don't use anything metal) and broke it in half making a sharp edge on both broken pieces, took the non coated piece and inserted sharp edge in the bottom side of the port and gently wiggled it around while applying some pressure towards the connector (just a little bit, make sure you don't break anything), did this for about 45 seconds then took out the match stick and the part that was touching the connector had turned blackish (I guess this is when you know you have 'cleaned' it enough?), repeated the same process on the top side of the port with a new match stick piece (guess you can use the same one after cleaning it with a tissue), the only difference was that this time applied the pressure in opposite side (other side of connector), device was on during all this time.
It builds up again after a while (~3 months) so I had to repeat the entire process again when it started doing that again at the start of December but it wasn't that annoying this time because I knew exactly what was wrong and how to get rid of it, device is still working fine 100%.
I'm simply sharing my experience and not encouraging anyone to do this but if you do decide to try this be sure not to use anything metal and don't break the connector inside the port (turning the device off would be a good idea too) and you'll be fine and if something does go wrong I won't be responsible.

SOLVED: S7 dropped > broken screen > how to recover images? Not rooted, not "usb mode"

SOLVED: S7 dropped > broken screen > how to recover images? Not rooted, not "usb mode"
So my wife dropped S7 to the floor and device ended up to be fully powered, but screen is now all black. Back and "software" button illuminates. I can change volume. I can take photos. So phone works, but screen is all black. Main concern is to have photos out from the phone. Contacts are synced, software etc. can be installed to new phone.
Kies finds the phone, but says that is' locked. Although phone does not have any passcodes or fingerprint, Kies cannot access to photos. Also the PC does see the device, but it won't allow me to see the contents. Find My Mobile is not activated, I think that I can't activate it now without phone. Also Smart Switch says that phone is locked. Phone settings are pretty much as out from the box. USB debugging is off, Developper options off, etc...
But I found that possible via ABD (?) I could access phone storage. Is it so? I sould start the phone to Recovery Mode / Download Mode? How to do that? Normally the phone is on and I can't switch it off. I can only soft reset is by keeping vol- + power buttons pressed for 10sec. But after that, phone just restarts to OS.
Please give hints how to proceed. What to try. New LCD is around 50USD and takes forever to get from Aliexpress/Ebay.
Why not use an external display? Hook it up to the USB-connector via an adaptor and it should work to unlock the phone using a PC-mouse.

O, it has such feature? Quick googling did not help how to do it. How does it work? Do I need some cable or device?
Any ideas how to proceed? I either can reboot device to Recovery mode and use ADB or connect external display to the device. Or if someone has any better solution
Please help. Family photos are in the phone
Try to unlock your lock screen with a usb mouse connected via otg and swiping up with the mouse. Then connect it to the computer and try to backup your data with kies or switch.
Tried many thing how to allow the connection from another phone or computer. However it was not possible to connect, so I ordered a new screen. Once new screen installed, it was not even a challenge Ordered new screen from Aliexpress.
