OnePlus 8 Android auto - OnePlus 8 Questions & Answers

Hi there!
I've used Android auto this morning, it run just as smooth as my old pixel 3.
But after that connection, I've tried to make it work.. can't find out how
It was even not connecting automatically to my car's Bluetooth...
I flush all data of Android auto, nothing to do...
Am I The only one having that?
Anything to do?

Are you connecting your smartphone via USB to your car or via bluetooth only? Also, are you watching Android Auto on car's screen or on smartphone's screen?

I plug it with a usb cable, the same one that work with my pixel 3.
I do use the car's screen

My Oneplus 8 Tmo's Android Auto works fine with my Volvo.

Try a different USB cable.

No issues with my sync 3 system

Well, it is working with the stock oneplus 8 cable.
Is there anyway, since I'm root, so the phone just dont look at the cable quality and do work as it can?

The cable matters for Android auto no matter what from my experience and research here is what I use works flawlessly and is only $6.99 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N4OKUB8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_A8ohFbBQJ6N06

Probably the cable that you're using only works for charging the smartphone but not for transferring data (because there's missing some internal cable).

But why did my old cable worked for my pixel and had worked once for a 2h drive and isn't working anymore?
I want to keep it cause it's a magnetic cable... And just to repeat, it was working flawless on my pixel 3 and for 2h with the OnePlus

Owww then I don't know... I don't trust too much on magnetic cables but the good point is that they're so convenient.
Another possibility is that your cable is now broken

wireless charging is stopped when usb port is used?

So i finally got my qi compatible wireless charger today. Thought i figured a way to power the phone while using usb otg with a usb stick containing my movie. But to my disappointment, whenever the usb port is ocuppied, it wont charge wirelessly So much for extended movie playing from usb sticks directly
Damn I did not receive mine yet and I was planning on the same thing. Evem with a Y usb otg cable won't charge. The cable has a micro usb to plug into the phone, a male usb to plug into the charger and a female usb to plug in a usb stick. Even with the female usb not used the phone will not charge but my old htc desire does.

Its not a problem no where did google announce that its OTG capable even though it is.
its a design to prevent you from plugging in your Micro USB to the computer and wireless charging to overload the phone with voltage/current
I guess we could somehow allow it with custom kernels? We could also blow up the phone tho.
There was a kernel for another nexus (7?) That allowed it.
Problem is, I bet most people who charge and want to use usb at the same time would be doing so to do something that uses high resources (NAND, CPU, GPU) and heat plus usage is bad for all of those things, hence the "design"

Thanks for your reply, and it is correct, because when I have the phone on QI charge, the battery info tells me it's on WIRELESS CHARGE, and when I connect the phone throug micro USB to the PC, it switches to USB CHARGING, even while the phone is still on the QI charger, so there's the protection.
HOWEVER, the phone KNOWS if it is connected to a USB charger (PC or charger) or to an OTG device..... (other connector with the loop connection 4-5). So there could be a trigger to the OS to either cut off wireless charging when connected to another charging source (that's actually what's happening now already), OR keep allowing wireless charging when connected to an OTG device.
So, i.m.h.o. still the question remains: Why can't I charge wirelessly with OTG connected.....?!?!

OK, well that's a good argument ofcourse.
My idea was to connect external storage (HDD/Stick), charge on QI, and play with Miracast to TV........
Not a good plan? Maybe better to buy a media player for 50 bucs?

PH-1 has Alternate Mode over Type C = watch movies over USB to a monitor

I just tested for Alternate mode over Type-C, to test for audio and video over DisplayPort. BINGO!
What we need
1. Essential PH-1 phone - Android version 7.1.1 - with screen rotation enabled on the phone
i. Tap and hold on the Home Screen
ii. Click - Settings
iii. Enable "Allow Home screen rotation"
i. Settings - Display - When device is rotated - Rotate the contents of the screen
2. USB Type C 3.1 cable capable of 5 amps support (can supply up to 100W power)
see https://plus.google.com/+BensonLeung/posts/eqJQbujcikq
May or may not work with a Type C 3.1 cable capable of only 3 amps. Don't have a cable to try.
Will not work with a Type C USB 2.0 cable - typical charging cable - not enough wires in the cable
I believe there is total of 6 different USB Type C cables available, the 3 listed below, with either 3 amp or 5 amp features
i. USB 2.0
ii. USB 3.1 Gen 1 - up to 5 Gbps
iii. USB 3.1 Gen 2 - up to 10 Gbps
3. A monitor with a USB Type-C 3.1 input - LG 4K Ultrafine Monitor
Don't have any knowledge, with respect to Thunderbolt 3 input monitors
e.g. LG 5k Ultrafine Monitor
Not all phones have a USB Type C with 3.1, Gen 1 or Gen 2. Most have only USB Type C 2.0 - cheaper components
Enjoy!
Does the Essential support a USB-C --> HDMI connection?
I think that some do, and obviously the iPhones have simple Lightning to HDMI connectors...

Yes it does. I even tested a USB-C --> VGA cable at work the other day and it worked fine.
Anyone got a link to a USB-C-->HDMI connector that they know works with this phone?
That was a real bummer with the Pixel line, that they don't support HDMI output at all. I am glad that this one does. Now I just need to know which connector to buy from Amazon...

I will let you guys know how it works.
This phone just keeps aging better and better, company did things right with the hardware. Very good news

Ok, that USB-C>HDMI adapter that I listed above from Amazon, works like a champ! Just plug it in and go, your phone's display instantly pops up on the monitor or TV.

Essential PH-1 with Samsung Dex Station
Hi All,
My Essential PH-1 works perfectly with the Genuine Samsung Dex Station as long as you use the Essential or Samsung Adaptive Charger cable connected to the dock.
The only item I could not get working consistently was the Ethernet connection - but all else worked perfectly.
HDMI out a 4K resolution (2160P)
2 x USB 2.0 ports
Quick Charge while docked ....
Temperatures remained stable at around 45-55 degrees Celsius while driving the external display.

Now all I need is a reliable Lineage 14.1 OS port with the Auxens OXI desktop embedded for this phone to easily rival my S8 in overall functionality and performance. The Sentio app I am using now is good - but not 100% there yet as it doesn't handle the screen properly due to the camera notch ... and the DPI settings are a bit wonky - but do work.

If you're wanting this functionality and are not on Oreo yet, wait to upgrade. Just got this nice detailed response from Samantha @ Essential CS: "While the Essential phone does support this capability, please note that DisplayPort™ is currently only working on devices with Android Nougat, not Android Oreo 8.0. Although the Essential phone is currently running on Android Nougat, we have plans to release Oreo 8.0 within the next several weeks. This is an developer issue across all devices, so unfortunately we can't control when a software fix will be implemented."

Pie does support it. If you have access to another adapter, I'd test it on the Essential. My PH-1 had faulty hardware preventing HDMI output last spring. I had to get it replaced to get it to work.

Pixel USB-C Earbuds not working on OP6

Curious if anyone else has procured the new Pixel USB-C earbuds and tried them on a OP6 and/or OP5/5T. They are suppose to work on ANY PHONE running Android P....I am running the Android P Beta 5 on my OP6 and the phone doesn't seem to recognize that the headphone are plugged in AT ALL.... nada, nothing.

Someone on the OP forum just hipped me to turn on OTG setting....and now they work like a charm....though maybe I'll have to reactive this setting each time as it supposedly turns off after 10 minutes which will be a pain.
And pleasantly surprised to find out the BASS kicks on these things...as all the other reviews I have seen out there say they lacked such.
You need to activate OTG in the settings get them working.
Hey,
I also got these buds for my OP6. They work fine and I also enabled always on for the OTG option. But the music control (pause, start, skip, google assistant) are not working at all.
Volume UP and DOWN are working fine.
Any suggestions?

Nope. But when I activated OTG for the 1st time it did step me through a set up menu for the headphone. And again I am on Beta 5.
Maybe because the op6 have usb 2 and pixel have 3.1?

Naw. It is suppose to work on all phones with USB C and Android P regardless of port version. Hopefully OP will get rid of the need to activate the OTG setting since the OP6T won't even have a headphone jack.

Theory:
The OP6T gets Usb-C headphones and maybe the handling of Usb-C headphones is already shipped to user within the beta versions.
I can't imagine OP lets its users always reenable the otg option when they remove the headphone jack and develop their own usb-c headphones.
I can#t verify this at the moment maybe someone else can?
So today I tried the OP6T USB-C adapter on my OP6 and nothing. Wasn't even detected. I didn't try turning on OTG but come on, I can't believe this isn't supported with Android 9 out of the box. Of course it works on the OP6T fine.

Hi guys, I'm on op6 with oxygen 9.0.2 and I would like to use USB c port because jack output is not that good at quality, in my opinion. I tried with enabling otg in the notification bar, but I really can't make my USB c headphones work! Is there anything else I have to do? Thanks

Pixel 3XL won't connect to Android auto

As the title says all the phone does is makes the charging noise constantly. Won't charge nor load Android auto, my Bluetooth and everything is connected. I plug my old s8 in to headunit and bam works straight away. Anyone else having similar issue?
Can provide a video
Headunit is pioneer avh-z5000 and is up to date
TIA
Have you tried a different USB C cable? I (and others) had issues with Android Auto when Pie first rolled out for the Pixel 2/XL on the first one or two beta/dev releases, but it's been fine since on the Pixel 2 and 3 XL.

My head unit won't even let me select as it's giving a solid connection
I am having the exact same problem. I just upgraded from a Pixel 2 to a Pixel 3XL. The Pixel 2 runs on Pie and connects just fine to the Pioneer AVH-2440NEX head unit. Pixel 3XL is running Pie as well and will not connect. The battery toggles back and forth from charging to not charging just like in the video that juice91 posted. I have put the phone into developer mode and chosen "File Transfer" and USB debugging" which did not change the problem. I updated the Pioneer head unit Firmware to v8.09, still no change. I don't know what to change next. Very Frustrated.
Solution
After battling this issue for 2 days, I finally figured it out. It's the stupid Bluetooth connection. The battery is toggling because the phone and the head unit keep bouncing back and forth trying to connect via cable then Bluetooth. The solution is very simple. Start the car, don't plug in your phone. Go to Bluetooth settings in the head unit and forget all the devices. Then plug your phone in. Android auto should pop right up and you are now connected.

Apple USB-C Headphone Adapter Working?

Is this adapter working for anyone. I can't seem to get it to work on my 7 Pro (I've tested it on other devices and can confirm that the adapter itself does work). Some Googling suggests it works on the 6T, so I would expect it to work on the 7 as well.

OnePlus is using a passive solution E.g the DAC is inside the phone and not the dongle so you need a dongle without a DAC inside.
Shame their is no Standard with Type C for Audio for OEM's to follow too much fragmentation in the cables/dongles..

Agreed. Another OP7 Pro user here trying to use the apple adapter and no luck. So @OcazPrime, this is working for you? Is this a hit and miss issue?
I ordered an Apple headphone jack adapter and I also had no luck. Can't get the adapter to work, with or without otg enabled.
