wireless charging is stopped when usb port is used? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i finally got my qi compatible wireless charger today. Thought i figured a way to power the phone while using usb otg with a usb stick containing my movie. But to my disappointment, whenever the usb port is ocuppied, it wont charge wirelessly So much for extended movie playing from usb sticks directly

Damn I did not receive mine yet and I was planning on the same thing. Evem with a Y usb otg cable won't charge. The cable has a micro usb to plug into the phone, a male usb to plug into the charger and a female usb to plug in a usb stick. Even with the female usb not used the phone will not charge but my old htc desire does.

"solved"? No, since it is by design and therefore not seen as a "problem"

Its not a problem no where did google announce that its OTG capable even though it is.
its a design to prevent you from plugging in your Micro USB to the computer and wireless charging to overload the phone with voltage/current

I guess we could somehow allow it with custom kernels? We could also blow up the phone tho.

There was a kernel for another nexus (7?) That allowed it.
Problem is, I bet most people who charge and want to use usb at the same time would be doing so to do something that uses high resources (NAND, CPU, GPU) and heat plus usage is bad for all of those things, hence the "design"

Thanks for your reply, and it is correct, because when I have the phone on QI charge, the battery info tells me it's on WIRELESS CHARGE, and when I connect the phone throug micro USB to the PC, it switches to USB CHARGING, even while the phone is still on the QI charger, so there's the protection.
HOWEVER, the phone KNOWS if it is connected to a USB charger (PC or charger) or to an OTG device..... (other connector with the loop connection 4-5). So there could be a trigger to the OS to either cut off wireless charging when connected to another charging source (that's actually what's happening now already), OR keep allowing wireless charging when connected to an OTG device.
So, i.m.h.o. still the question remains: Why can't I charge wirelessly with OTG connected.....?!?!

OK, well that's a good argument ofcourse.
My idea was to connect external storage (HDD/Stick), charge on QI, and play with Miracast to TV........
Not a good plan? Maybe better to buy a media player for 50 bucs?

[Q] Is it mandatory to connect the charger with the HDTV Adapter ?

Hi Guys,
I've got my HDTV Adapter for a stock Galaxy Note 10.1, I'm a bit disappointed because it looks like it's mandatory to connect the charger (the cable already has got an extra slot for connecting the charger) in order to make the note send what it is displayed on its screen to the cable so I can see it on the computer screen for example.
Does anybody have an idea if this is true or not ? I'd love the idea if it is an option but not an obligation !!!!

My experience is yes, power is required. But this can be as easy as plugging in the usb to the tv or monitor if it has a usb port, you dont HAVE to use the charger
Which adaptor did you use?

Well, let me tell you why I'm a bit disappointed, I used to have an iPad which used in a lot of meetings moving here in and there with my pad and cable, now I've to have a power source around or even a computer, with a at least two cables with/without a charger, I'm not bothered with that at home but while one business this note didnn't prove to be a stand-alone, I'm not sure if an app that may simulate charging can deceicve tthe note on that aspect or not but so far, this can be considered a draw-back

Cheap cables are just fine.
Also, it's impossible for the phone to charge while using OTG. For OTG to work some of the pins are used for handling data and therefore cannot be used to charge.
I ordered one from china, took about 3 to 4 weeks, then I ordered from ebay..
they work fine... they only work with jellybean....

Actually, the thing that prevents charging isn't the pins, it is a software toggle that turns the phone's port into a power supply for the external device, the charging circuit is switched off in the pm chip. There are charging/power usb otg host cables available for phones that support it, e.g., Nexus 7, with patched CM10.1, and the phone can get charged while usb hosting.
the 4 pins are still 2 data, two power, in otg mode.
I don't know if a software fix would work for captivate. I've got the datasheet for the cappy power management chip somewhere. if I can find it, I'll report if the chip can support it and if so, then maybe the N7 fix could get ported to cappy.

AW: USB OTG Cable
I use a 0,70€ cable... I don't recommend it, the connection between phone and usbstick interrupts too often.

Yea. It's a bit of a gamble when buying cheap cables. I also bought a really cheap usb otg cable from dealextreme and the connector on the phone's end is too loose. The OTG cable that came with Nokia N8 is ok.
I use this OTG cable: www.amazon.com/Electronics-Micro-USB-OTG-Cable/dp/B005GGBYJ4/. Small US company, offers a lifetime warranty, only takes a couple days to get from Amazon (free two day shipping if you have a Prime membership). I've had a few from them and never had an issue (other than I tend to lose them). Perfect fit and just the right length. Good stuff.

I bought one from Conrad electronics here in Germany, it costs like 6 euros and works perfectly.

I bought a cheap £2.99 cable from Amazon UK which works just fine.
The packet it came in states the brand as 'Afunta' (Made in China).

[Q] Charging and Synching on GT-N8020

I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I tried searching but nothing came up.
Is there any way to charge a Galaxy Note 10.1 NT-8020 AND synch the data at the same time via a USB port? Right now I use the stock charger and cable together with MyPhoneExplorer (Android app) to synch the data via Wi-Fi.
I know if I use the original Sammy cable plugged into a USB port on a desktop PC, I can synch the data but only charge if I switch off the device. I assume this is because there's not enough current available for charging from the USB port. But is there something different about the cable itself?
If it's just a case of insufficient current, I should be able to charge/synch via a powered USB hub but the one I tried just now doesn't work either. If it's just a question of buying the right type of powered hub, then can anyone suggest make and model?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks. That's what I was hoping so might risk buying a hub I saw that claims to deliver 2A to the USB ports. I tried an old 10-way USB hub that has a 2A PSU but this can't charge the Note while it's switched on so obviously it's not supplying enough current to the ports. I kinda imagined it would deliver 2A to one port or 200Ma to all 10 or something like that..

EDIT
Rats! Just found out this product is a charger only ie no data ports so that's no good. There must be some technical reason why an external, powered USB data port hub can't be made to deliver 2A or so.

T700 HDMI

I would like to be able to buy a cable so that when i am away i can plug my Tab into an HDMI TV and watch movies directly. I know that it is possible but before i root my tab, are there complications on rooted devices that would make this function unavailable?
Any cable recommendations greatly received.
I use MHL cable. Kind of 3 way cable. 1 to your device, 1 to the hdmi port and another 1 is usb charging port

I went for the Chromecast and Allcast app from clockwork. It gave me some trouble initially but now is working well. I'm yet to test it with WiFi AP as the router. I hope I can use it when I travel without a bringing a router

I used to use the Ipad and you only needed 1 cable for that...
I wanted to use for presentations so the last thing i want is needing to plug it in charge!
Thanks
its working without charging. but your battery will drain fast.

Great - how did you do it? lol
I have an MHL-HDMI cable and it was just not connecting at all (without charging) infact I didnt even know you had to plug it into a charger into I read your post, I just went to a meeting room and connected all up again, this time plugging in the charger and hey presto it works!!
As soon as I pull the charger out I loose picture - does that MHL device need charging up?
dont know... mine just work that way... lol... you can also plug in to the usb port on the display.

Because some TVs have MHL enabled HDMI ports that don't require external power.

Who needs USB C...

Okay, since this part of the Note 8.0 section is dead, I decided to revive it a bit on an USB cable I upgraded to. It combines the versatility of Apple's megnetic power connector and USB C plug reversal capabilities. So plugging in you USB cable is much easier and does not degrade your USB connector over time. It is the most awsome accessory I ever bought for a device, and has 2.0 Amp charge current capabilities to boot!
Now for the built in bonus item... it has a charge LED to let you know it is either charging or not. No need to wake the device to see if the device is charged. As you all know Note 8.0 devices have no charge LED indecators.
Now the big big big bonus... the cable is cheap and has free shipping. It cost me $6.00 US and came from China via Amazon. There are a few similar devices on Amazon so look for the silver version not the white or what ever.
how can you upgrade USB 2 to USB C?
Did you hacked the hardware physically?

The cable does everything I have stated. Has reversable connection for both charging and data. The head has circuitry to properly connect the pins without any fuss. The only thing it will not do is high speed usb 3.0 or better. Wish this was a stock option it would have saved me tons of money with oem and high quality replacement cables krapping out on me.
Sorry, I really don't understand....
Could you please post a photo of the cable?
Thank you....

ah, its an adapter so it can use MagSafe-like charger....
its not real USB-C.... but nice one, I could use it for my Note 8.0
