Cheap cables are just fine.
Also, it's impossible for the phone to charge while using OTG. For OTG to work some of the pins are used for handling data and therefore cannot be used to charge.
I ordered one from china, took about 3 to 4 weeks, then I ordered from ebay..
they work fine... they only work with jellybean....

Actually, the thing that prevents charging isn't the pins, it is a software toggle that turns the phone's port into a power supply for the external device, the charging circuit is switched off in the pm chip. There are charging/power usb otg host cables available for phones that support it, e.g., Nexus 7, with patched CM10.1, and the phone can get charged while usb hosting.
the 4 pins are still 2 data, two power, in otg mode.
I don't know if a software fix would work for captivate. I've got the datasheet for the cappy power management chip somewhere. if I can find it, I'll report if the chip can support it and if so, then maybe the N7 fix could get ported to cappy.

AW: USB OTG Cable
I use a 0,70€ cable... I don't recommend it, the connection between phone and usbstick interrupts too often.

Yea. It's a bit of a gamble when buying cheap cables. I also bought a really cheap usb otg cable from dealextreme and the connector on the phone's end is too loose. The OTG cable that came with Nokia N8 is ok.
I use this OTG cable: www.amazon.com/Electronics-Micro-USB-OTG-Cable/dp/B005GGBYJ4/. Small US company, offers a lifetime warranty, only takes a couple days to get from Amazon (free two day shipping if you have a Prime membership). I've had a few from them and never had an issue (other than I tend to lose them). Perfect fit and just the right length. Good stuff.
AW: USB OTG Cable
I bought one from Conrad electronics here in Germany, it costs like 6 euros and works perfectly.

I bought a cheap £2.99 cable from Amazon UK which works just fine.
The packet it came in states the brand as 'Afunta' (Made in China).

Hi all,
So I bought a USB cable to connect my hd2 and the pc. The cable it self works perfectly when charging with a USB charger , but when I try to connect my hd2 with the computer using windows mobile center the phone does not connect is it the usb or wmc???
Some cables don't have the required connections for data and only work for charging. Was this, by any chance, a cheap cable? Possibly off ebay?

yeah it was of ebay for like 99p
I'm afraid it's not just a coincidence that I guessed that. You get what you pay for mate. Just spend a couple of quid more and go for a decent brand one, to be sure, or check with the seller that it does data as well as charging.

This is a long shot but have you considered it could be that you don't have the latest drivers...
But I think Archer is right

Check out monoprice.com. I have ordered multiple cables from them. Good quality at a reasonable price. I have a 6ft micro usb to usb that I use now. Works just as good as the stock one.
http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/ho...er-Supplies/FB341AA?HP-TouchPad-Power-Charger ?
Ditto on the suggestion for Monoprice. It's the only place I buy this sort of thing.
But that aside, if you can't find what you're looking for and want a REALLY long cable, you can easily find regular USB extension cables. Like 6 to 15 foot extension cables. Then you can plug your short micro USB cable that fits your phone into the extension.
Thx because the one that comes with the sensation is just to short I wish they made a micro USB to stand USB adaptor that would be great so I could have my phone charge via AC and it actually reach my desk.

Basically any USB to USB-Micro B-type cable will work.
I have an adapter cord, for USB usage,I normally use it on my computer.
Yup, monoprice is where its at. I got my 16 ft long cable for a couple bucks. It was definitely worth it.
what do u do with a 16 footer? i just want to sit in the back of the car while my wife drives
i'll second Amazon basics. i have a couple of their usb cords and they are great.
+1 monoprice

Hi guys
Anyone know where to buy a GENUINE usb cable? They are the only ones that work with ADB, as I have many micro-usb (blackberry, generic, etc) but only my HTC one actually works with ADB. Anyone know where to buy one?
Cheers
I've purchased a few from ebay that claim to be the real deal, the only thing that says htc is a removable stick which makes me doubt the authenticity but I assure you the work fine with
adb. they only cost around $2. there are tons of them on ebay, just search htc micro usb cable
if you want the exact link to what I bought let me know and ill post

I can tell you for a fact that is not true, I've never had the original cable since my brother gave me his G2, and I've been using a Nook micro-usb cable with my phone ever since I owned it on my computer.
A Genuine micro-USB cable is no different in communication than any other micro-usb cable, if you're using windows you probably just got the USB drivers wrong for your phone, or didn't download all of the platform-tools files. Again the only thing that makes the cable genuine is the htc/t-mobile logo on it, otherwise it's the same as any other OEM/Generic cable thats been branded.
PS: Did you remember to enable USB Debugging?
Thanks guys, I ordered one off ebay for £2 and yeah I did enable usb debugging

i have tried loads of different genuine micro usb cables from various makers and never had a problem...
shame i didnt see this earlier or i could have sent you about 20 for free
So if USB Debugging is working is there no threat to using a generic USB cable? I have a generic one and rooted last night. The entire time I was nervous because there were a lot of posts about the official HTC cable. Was I worrying needlessly?
Yup, it is true some might not work but if they work once, well they should keep on working. Pretty much if you have debugging on and the proper drivers and everything else... then you type adb devices and you see your serial number, that cable is just fine. If it says waiting for device or something like that, then it is possible you have a bad cable but almost always a different problem

Thanks! That would have saved some needless worrying last night but it all worked out. Good to know for the future though!
Afaik, there are only two kinds of micro-USB cables. Normally they support both data and power (charging), but some only support charging (data pins aren't connected).
I bought some cheapest retractable micro-USB data cables from dx.com and they work just fine. The cheap retractable ones just seem to easily break after long use.

The most common chance of you getting a charge-only USB cable, is if it came with something like a Car charger. Otherwise they should always have both the power and data pins.

I wouldn't think it's the firmware. Is this happening when the cables are plugged into a PC or the charger or both? If it's only from the charger, then it could be the charger itself. Hopefully it's not a problem with the female plug on the tablet.
The charger and pc side of it both work fine just not the otg part lol they say turn the tab off and on with the cable inserted but still does nothing and i dont have to do that for the otg cable on my s3...im beginning to think both cables ar dead...i might try splicing them togetherlol 2 cables from 1

LOL, I completely missed the "OTG" part. I've bought a ton of stuff off eBay but I'm always a little leery of what I buy, especially anything electronic. You can get them for $1 + $2.98 shipping on Amazon. I feel a little better buying off Amazon for some reason. In fact, after looking at them, I'm going to go ahead and order one.

So I got a USB OTG Cable from amazon (My cousin got it) and when I went to try it with a Xbox 360 wired controller, it didn't work. I even tried using a USB stick with the cable and it didn't work. What? I'm starting to think that I shouldn't have upgraded to lollipop and should have stayed on KitKat. Does anyone have any answers to this????

Try the otg cable on another mobile device (phone, tablet, whatever). I've found the Shield to be a bit finnicky with some OTG solutions. All my otg cables work ... except for my HooToo combo charger/otg device. Sad - since that's the only reason I bought it.

I have to have the cable hanging from the tablet for the control to work. So if in console mode I have the side with the port hanging off the table so that the weight of the controller plug is pulling down

If it's broken, it's broken. And generally having to lean cables is evidence its sensitive electronic little components are taking a dive. That and all off brand cables, or at least most off brand cables, tend to be inexpensive. I still recognize that problem from my last insured $20 RadioShack MicroUSB cable.
