Hotspot not being seen by my laptop - OnePlus 8 Questions & Answers

Since the last update (10.5.8 UK?), I can start a hotspot session, but my laptop never sees it. Has anyone else experienced this? I have had it working in the past.
Any advice on how I can troubleshoot this gratefully received.
Alan

Does hotspot work for others?
Alan

It was my laptop at fault. Rebooted it and it all worked.

Nope - not a clue - I think a thread to explain this would be a great help.

I think it's because of the hotspot's band that switched from 2,4ghz to 5ghz,most of the relatively 'old' laptops use just 2,4ghz,try to verify in your Hotspot's configuration to change the band from 5ghz to 2,4ghz.

Tethering Via WIFI & Videochat

Guys,
First of all I want to thank all of you for all of your hard work accomplishing TRUE TETHERING on the G1. It works flawlessly. THANKS!!! You guys are geniuses!!!
I have a question to ask with using tether-1.6.tar
Most of my programs I have that require internet access work all for one stinking video chat program I always use to chat with my family while I'm away on work assignment. It's a program called ISPQ. I can log into the program, and it pulls up the directories with all of the users signed in, and I can send quick messages, but when someone sends me a message the picture field is blank and in the directory when you click on a persons name to see their profile the picture area is blank as well. On their website it shows what ports you need opened for the program to run successfully as I'll post them down below. When I used to Tether with my TMO DASH the program always worked so I'm sure there is a way to get it working using the G1 tethered as well.
Thanks again,
Anthony

Thanks for your response. Strange when I run the built in network utility in that program it DOES say it's detecting a firewall when there isn't. Probably a quick uninstall/re-install of the program should get it working properly. Everything else other then that single program works great. Streaming live video and audio works flawlessly as well. Amazing how this is true tethering and it blows the doors off of Tetherbot.
The people who got this all going are like god to me.
Yes! I also tether with this method, and it works flawlessly, I get 135KBpps down. And 85KBps up on edge, and on 3G I get around 900KBps down and 240ish up. It's funny though, after running a speedtest, it said my phone was located in kansas when I'm actually in cali, maybe its a ip address location error. But back to your situation, I haven't had any issues with ports on of the programs that required specific ports to function. =)
The location is correct, T-Mobile sends all their info through a proxy in kansas or some place back east, and that is why our speeds are sometimes slow.

Neoobs, Would that be the case in the Philadelphia area as well? I'm asking of this because if Tmo sends all of their info through proxy in this area as well, that's the reason why my videochat program isn't working properly (laptop/G1 Tethered).
Strange is that when I hook up my old Tmo Dash and tether it, ispq works fine but it's terribly slow running on Edge.
3G gets sent to a different proxy but both are sent through proxies.
I know there are some ways around it just not able to get the info right now as I am AFH

I searched and searched with no results. There has to be a way around this. If I can video chat with the Dash Tethered to my lappy, there for sure has to be a way on the G1.
Neoobs,
Any word or source of a way around the 3g proxy/videochat with my post?
Thanks again......
Since TMO's 3g/edge connection goes through a proxy at the main how could I find out what Proxy IP and Port it is? In the program there is an option to log in through proxy so I guess I would need to know what's the proxy address they use for 3G in my area. Anyway I could find out?
It isn't like a software proxy, it is a hardware proxy, there is no info you can put in to get around it really. I will test this and see.
I can't find the info on how to get around it but I know I did because I was running programs (torrents) that were saying I was fully connected and even had someone remote into my PC while I was on it (was a friend) so nothing should be blocking it. BTW I was using openDNS servers maybe that is what helped.

I'm about to beg you to download ISPQ and set it up (via Wifi Tether) and see exactly what I'm talking about. lol It's actually a pretty cool program and it's a free 21 day trial.
I will download it and get back to you in 24 hours.
Thank you so much!!!!
It all works fine for me, lets me log in and see others. What is the problem exactly?
Thanks for trying it out. I can log in but I can't see the user profile pictures in the directory and also when I receive a qm from someone the picture area is blank. All I can see is the text they sent in the message, not the picture..
Can you run the network diagnostic test in the programs options? Doesn't work here.
Can you see the users in the directories profile pictures and if someone qmed you, you can see their image along with the text?
I can see the users listed in the directories but no pictures of the users and the qms, I can read the text in the qm, just can't see the users image. Funny part of it all is I can successfully video chat in there and I can see the users video while video chatting. Your help with this is very appreciated. You can private me your response if you may.
Thanks again..

[FIX] 3G Upload & Download Speeds

Don't forget to change your proxy!
I've recently learned that sprint phones route data through a proxy by default to throttle download speeds. You can easily change that www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922978

Link is borked
link dont work?
Step 1. Install MSL Reader from the market, use this to obtain your MSL.
Step 2. In your dialer, enter ##3282#
Step 3. Choose Edit Mode and enter your MSL as the requested password.
Step 4. Choose Advanced
Step 5. Change HTTP PD Proxy Porter to 0
Step 6. Change HTTP PD PD Proxy Address to 0.0.0.0
Step 7. Back out of here, and reboot.
I should add that I am noticing a real difference (but cannot confirm it is not placebo).
interesting, ill keep my eye on this.
As we all know, HTC and Sprint borked downloads for apps like Rhapsody, Mog, Thumbplay.
I recently ran across the subject and i found a fix. It is very simple.
1. Get your MSL, There are many ways, call Sprint, Download the app MSL Reader from the market, CDMA workshop
2. After you have your MSL go to your phone and type ##3282#
3. Click Edit Mode
4. Click Advanced
5. Scroll down to HTTP PD Proxy Port & HTTP PD Proxy Address
6. Change HTTP PD Proxy Port to 0 (zero)
7. Change HTTP PD Proxy Address to 0.0.0.0
8. Go enjoy Downloads and a .20-.60 mbps increase in 3G speeds!
-All credit to original finder of this fix, i am just passing it along and found the speed increase. Also when you flash a new rom it will back to old settings so remember to re-apply and it wont make you more vulnerable to anything.

Wifi Tether for Root Users with Nexus 5

Has anyone gotten this app to work on their rooted Nexus 5? I get errors and it doesn't work. If you got it to work, can you post step by step instructions with the settings you used? I'd rather use this than the built in tethering. Thanks.

You have to modify a DB file on your device to get any tethering app to work.
Here are instructions from another thread in this QA forum:
yakman66 said:
I have the T-mobile $30 unlimited prepaid plan and I ran into the tethering block after getting my Nexus 5.
I was able to work around the issue by modifying the following sqlite database (you'll need root):
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
You need to add a new entry to the global table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0.
It looks like you need to do this because some configuration data was added to Android for T-mobile that forwards tethered data to this APN: pcweb.tmobile.com
T-mobile is probably checking to see if your account has tethering enabled when you go through this APN.
After I made this change I also needed to change my APN settings so that it uses ipv4 instead of ipv6. It seems like tethering with ipv6 does not work 100% yet.
I hope this helps.

you need an SQL editor, like SQL lite.
The stock tethering is working fine after I rooted however I am worried T-Mobile will find out I am tethering sooner or later. I would rather use this app to tether
I solved with this app: WiFi Tether Router
on Google Play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en
the developer has done a compatible update
I contacted the developer via email and he told me after a few hours
the developer advised me to select these settings
Interface wlan0
Method 0 - Auto
works also with
Interface wlan0
Method 2

I am interested to know if anyone has gotten the original app in this thread, the Wifi Tether for Root users working with the Nexus 5.
Unlike the other posters, I am interested in this app because it enables you to spoof the MAC address, which I am interested in for making a streetpass relay point for my 3DS, so the alternative app suggested is not a viable alternative for me.
Any ideas how I can get this working on my Nexus 5? It is rooted, stock ROM, and have installed Busybox.
I would try mailing the Dev of the paid app. The screenshots of the options and the description of the methods available look similar to those in the free branch, and if the code is similar it may be simple to add the feature.

[MOD][TMO] Unrestricted Native Tether (4.4 only)

**UPDATE for 4.4.2** -- see this thread. Basically the tether_dun_required database fix from Nexus devices for those familiar with it; MikeyNick posted a great summary there if you're not.
This mod is for T-Mobile US users to redirect built-in tethering from pcweb to the usual fast apn. All you have to do is flash the attached zip and delete the stock "T-Mobile Tethering" APN and everything should work.
--- rambling begins ---
Well, I took the plunge on the Moto Maker not-Cyber-Monday deal and, upon receiving the thing yesterday, was shocked to learn that nobody had made a mod to enable native tethering for those of us with grandfathered unlimited plans. Of course, magenta just has to be different and doesn't use the same restrictions that everyone else uses. The obvious problem is the absence of the entitlement service that performs the check on the other three major US operators; rather, no matter how I configured my apns, the dumb thing still managed to go through pcweb.
So of course the only thing to do is to go searching through system apks. Turns out there is a hardcoded reference to pcweb under framework-res/res/values-mcc310-mnc260/strings.xml, so I changed that to refer to fast.t-mobile.com, and voila! I did change a few other things around in my earlier quest to get this working so if you're comfortable with your phone, please give it a shot and let me know if it works for you.
Many thanks to chaoslimits for his thread, which explained to me how to get apktool to actually build my framework-res.
Thanks for your efforts! I'll give it a shot!
It works! Thank you! Will keep an eye on my data and billing.

Thanks for the report! Did you apply any other mods (e.g. settings database/APN changes)? It's my suspicion that the only requirement is the modified framework and then changing the stock tethering APN in the Mobile Networks settings, but I haven't tried doing this on a clean install.
Maybe I am not understanding this. Do you mean to say if I use the Power Toggles to activate tethering it will notify Tmobile?
What is the source of the changes made to framework-res.apk
Can you share?

There is never any notification; the issue is how the built-in hotspot activated by power toggles routes traffic. T-Mobile devices use a different APN for tethering (pcweb.tmobile.com), which is what directs clients to the hotspot upsell page. This mod simply redirects traffic so it goes through the same APN as your phone's data (fast.t-mobile.com).

As I said in my post, there is a single xml property that refers to pcweb under framework-res/res/values-mcc310-mnc260/strings.xml, which I changed to fast. There is no "source"; I just decompiled, modified, and recompiled framework-res.apk.

Later tonight I should have some time to flash my phone back to complete stock and see exactly how much is necessary to get tethering working from there. Hopefully I'll be able to update the OP with a friendly set of instructions to get a stock build to be tethering-ready.

The only hard requirement to get this working is write access to /system. I have an unlocked bootloader and the zip is designed to be flashed in a custom recovery (I use TWRP 2.6.3.1). However, all the zip does is replace one file (/system/framework/framework-res.apk). I am not familiar with the various hacks required to achieve sysrw without unlocking the bootloader, but I expect it would be possible.

Are you saying that you can't use native tethering on Orange? If you want to give me some information about your APN setup and how Orange deals with tethering I might be able to help, but this mod should have no effect on your phone running on Orange. The only thing this mod does is change how the phone connects tethered devices through the T-Mobile US network.

The mod itself should work as kangkat is based on stock firmware, but flashing this may mess up some of the built-in mods for kangkat--I don't know the details of what ib4stid did. If you're feeling adventurous, back up your framework-res and flash this to see if it messes anything up.
If you're not feeling adventurous, I can mod the kangkat framwork-res and you can give that a try instead.
EDIT: See attachment, if you want. I didn't actually install kangkat or anything, so let me know how it goes.

If you have a data plan with T-Mobile that doesn't include tethering, any attempt at using the internet via tethering will direct the tethered device to an upsell page which basically says "you need to add this service to your account." That page means the traffic is being routed through the tethering APN (pcweb.tmobile.com) instead of the normal APN (fast.t-mobile.com for LTE devices). If you tether and it works then you either have a tethering plan, or your tethered data is going through the same APN as your phone's data.

The issue with adblock has existed awhile based on a topic in their bug forums . The problem is adblock blocks port 80 for mms . There isn't a way to set a white list for adblock .Most users try to get around it by changing their apn settings with mms as port 8080. This "fix" hasn't work for me , but if anyone is interested in a similar app to adblock ...check out adaway on Fdroid. It has the same function and more extensive options for a whitelist . You can even log an app's ads to decide to black/whitelist.
