split screen launcher - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 General

Hi, I have a fire HD 10. There is an app called split screen launcher which I would like to use. After choosing the apps I would like to use together, the next step is to add to the home screen but I cannot do this. I have nova launcher installed and from what I searched in Google you cannot add a bookmark to the homescreen.... Is there a workaround?

You can modify the framework-res.apk to activate split screen
Find in res/values/bools.xml
Code:
//Replace to true
<bool name="config_supportsMultiWindow">false</bool>

Thanks for the reply. Wasn't really looking to root my device at the moment, thought I could get away with it just by installing an app that creates a shortcut.... Its crazy you cant create a shortcut

ADW and ADW EX,,,

So its a new year and I have a new toy,
I seem to have a set of apps that give me the functions and control I desire.
Its down to Launcher.
I did pay for the upgrade to the AWD EX and to my dismay it does not recognize old settings and desktop configurations. But hey.. Just more tinkering with my new SHINY...
My plan now that I have pretty much decided on the apps I want on the phone is to go to the Pick and Pack ROM with the Voodoo Kernel.
I do want to do some testing with the 3 different Launchers (AWD, Launcher Pro, and TW) and see which will suit my needs for Eye Candy and function..
OK.. to the question at hand. I will have all three on the phone installed. I do not like having to choose between the three every time I hit the HOME button. Is there a way to change the default once it is set ?
Hope to do a review for Noobs like me as I go.
Download the app home switcher and you can choose your default.

Home switcher is good stuff!
I prefer HomeSmack but either one works.

If you do not want to use a home switcher you can use the built in one. When you hit home button, there should give you the option on which launcher you want to use. There is also a check box in this window that says use by default (or something like that I never read it) hit the check box then which program you want to go to. Now if you change your mind down the road all you have to do is go to menu-> settings->applications->manage applications Once in here you will find the program in question and click on it then clear defaults then it will start asking you again.

Thats what I was looking for.. Thanks..
HAHA As with all good gadgets, there is always a way to make em do what you want to do. Its usually just a simple matter of Banging ones head against the wall a few times and then asking those who know..
So far I like Launcher Pro the best, even though I don't use any of the widgets. Which one did you end up using as your default?
This is probably a stupid question, but I do like ADW but I really like the task manager widget from samsung.... anyway I can get that widget on ADW?
Unfortunately I have not found a way to use the stock Samsung widgets with ANY other Launcher other than Touch Wiz..
But by checking the various forums and doing some research on Market I can usually find something that will fill the need.
You can't have the widget on any other launcher, but if you hold down the home button to bring up the recent app switcher thing you can hit the Task Manager button on the bottom of the popup. It takes you to the same thing as tapping the samsung widget.
Good point... I forgot about that... if I need it bad enough I can put a shortcut for that app on the home screen too...

[Q] Moto G App Drawer (KK 4.4.3)

Hi, Today I boought a Moto G, and immediately upgraded and rooted it to Android 4.4.3. (Previously I'd been using a Galaxy S2 and a Xperia S)
The first thing I noticed is the changes in the app drawer, which I hate. I do not like that widgets and apps are mixed, I mean I liked the cycling thru apps in Jelly Bean, and having to select the widgets tab to cycle thru widgets.
Another thing I noticed is that the Moto G doesn't have an options button. While in the App drawer, all 3 buttons are redundant:
Left side button (Where options usually is) is now back, which takes you to the homescreen...
Middle button (Home) Takes you home .... -In Jelly bean you could long press to open recent apps-
Right side button - Opens recent apps
With that in mind you can tell that you're losing a lot of customizing options, for example, I used to click options and hide apps in Galaxy S2, or sort apps alphabetically, by use, recent install, etc...
I guess my questions is: Is there any way to get those features back using the stock launcher?
To sort apps customly, to separate widgets and make the app drawer cycle thru apps like it's supposed to?
I appreciate the help
I assume the launcher you are using is the stock launcher provided in Android.
If you want more options in the app drawer then it would be better to install another launcher.
My prefered launcher is Apex but I know that a lot of people are using Nova as well.
Both very smooth launcher with lots of options.

Hi Mickey, thanks for your reply.
Yes, I was using stock launcher at the moment of the question, the question basically was if it was possible with stock launcher... I assumed it was not so I downloaded Nova Launcher, but it also doesn't have the option to customly organize apps, like dragging and dropping one before the other in the drawer. If I hold on an app it takes it to the home screen which is not what I want
Also with Nova I could only separate widgets from apps if I made the drawer scroll vertically, I want horizontal with multiple pages, but widgets on a different tab.
What custom launcher has the option to do these things?
Thank you again for your time
I think Solo Launcher has the features you require.

Solo and Nova
I've tried both solo and Nova launcher but neither has the features I'm looking for, solo offers the option to sort apps but from presets like 'alphabetically, most used, recently used " but I want to sort them manually, I don't understand why I'm having so much trouble finding this option when on previous Android devices was as simple as drag and drop

There are no changes in the app drawer. The stock Google launcher has always worked this way. If your previous devices worked differently, then you were not using the Jellybean launcher, which looked and worked exactly the same way as you are describing.

Nope, that was never possible with stock Jellybean. If it worked that way on your S2, it's either because you had installed a third-party launcher or because that is how Samsung's own launcher (is it still called Touchwiz?) worked. I have never used anything other than Nexus or Google Play Edition devices (as well as played around a bit with Cyanogen), so I couldn't say for sure.
I used to click options and hide apps in Galaxy S2, or sort apps alphabetically, by use, recent install, etc...

Those all must be Samsung "innovations."

No, because they were never in the stock launcher. You will have to try various other third-party launchers until you find one you like. I'm generally happy with the stock one, so I'm afraid I would be useless at recommendations.
Good luck,

2019 Kindle Fire HD 10 - Adding shortcuts to home screen

I recently got a new 2019 Kindle HD 10 and started setting it up. I have been able to get Google Play and Nova Launcher successfully installed without any issue. Everything has been working great but I am unable to do something that I was able to do with my older Kindle Fire HD: add shortcuts to the Home Screen.
Previously on a 2017? HD 10, I was able to add shortcuts from Chrome right to the desktop. I was also able to add a book's shortcut from Moon+ Reader right to the Home Screen. But now, neither of these things seem to work. I am not exactly sure what's the issue that is preventing this from happening. App permissions? Newer version of Fire OS? A setting within Nova Launcher? I Googled the issue and found someone mention this was due to the OS version being higher but I haven't found any real confirmation on this anywhere else.
Does anyone have an idea of why I can't do this - and is there any workarounds for this feature?
Thanks,
TB

You must disable Amazon's crappy launcher
Code:
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.firelauncher

Yep, already did this using the Toolkit (14.2). I have Nova Launcher set as my default launcher and have even restarted to see if that cleared anything in memory. Still nothing. I have even gone back in and run the command again from the Toolkit to no avail. I keep checking permissions on the Kindle but I obviously haven't found the solution ... yet.
Take care,
TB
I had widget support allready activated with toolkit but no option to add a shortcut to Nova Launcher in Chrome and gdrive. I don't no why but suddenly the option appears in drive an chrome app.
Same problem here, configured with fire toolbox to use nova launcher, and widgets work but shortcuts don't.
So... I installed "Shortcut Maker" app, and created widgets that are shortcuts on the desktop. I even made some use chrome and some use Firefox, works great. I'm guessing there are other similar app choices but this solved my problem.
Note that when it first starts it says it can't make shortcuts, to try widgets, and that worked.
As usual ymmv, but did exactly what I needed.

Looking for an Android App -- a launcher, but... not.

I'm looking for an app that behaves like a launcher, but isn't an actual launcher/home app: multi screen, can use widgets, has an app drawer, etc, but doesn't specify itself as a launcher program.
Basically, I want to use is as one of the sides in a split screen configuration, but any app that defines itself as a home screen app android will treat differently and give most of the screen real estate to when it's running.
Google fails me because any search terms I can come up with to search for such an app just gives me useless listicles of 'the best android launchers!'
Any suggestions?

No, that's an app that just launches apps in split screen. I want basically a launcher that runs as an app and not a home screen.
Well, you still want your "splitable" Launcher to handle the home button/intent, so I think the only answer is to patch Android so that the Home app can be split screened.
There's some logic in there for older apps ("this app is too old and can't operate split screen"), probably some for Home activity.

Not really -- I'm ok with using a completely different app for my actual home screen. I effectively just want an app to behave exactly like a launcher, only not to tell Android it is a launcher.
I realise this may not exist. If it doesn't I'll probably just find an open source one and modify it accordingly; I was just hoping it was already a thing.

Take your favorite launcher. Use ApkTool. Edit AndroidManifest.xml and remove:
<category android:name="android.intent.category.HOME"/>
Build it back with ApkTool then sign it.
Of course this can not coexist with your "Homey" version unless you change the package.

Ya I figured it might be that easy, but my Android dev experience has been limited to writing a widget. Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll end up doing this.

Question Looking for a new launcher

What is the Best launcher with cool transitions
Could try nova launcher lawn chair and ruthless those are the only ones I can think of I know there are more
Nova, by far
Lawnchair beta 4. Everything else is just overhead imho.
Anyone running nova on the march update? I saw mention of a fix for animations or something similar when using 3rd party launchers. I wonder if they fixed the issue of not being able to use split screen with 3rd party launchers IF you have animations disabled.

I think you're hitting on what I said. The Nova developers replied in the nova thread here on XDA that this break is on the android side. Any third part launcher will not allow for split screen if animation duration scale is set to "off" or "0." This is ridiculous and google needs to fix it. There is a mention of fixes with third part launchers in the march update change log. I double it has to do with this specific issue, but I can hope.
I was using Microsoft Launcher for quite some time. Then switched back to Nova. There really is no competition.
Anyone who is used to the triple launch actions (tap, swipe up and swipe down) for every icon on homescreen would find it very difficult to switch to another launcher. I like to keep my home screen clean and uncluttered, and this feature helps me launch 36 apps with just 2 rows of apps (6 in each), including the dock.
Ofcourse, there are so many other features. I can't imagine how people use stock launchers on their devices.

It is a feature available with Nova launcher when you long press on any app icon. You'll need the Prime license for swipe actions though.

ah, i see. What are your swipe actions? It looks like the swipe actions are launcher/OS action like open quick settings though...so for example you have a swipe up action on photos set to open, say, your messaging app? That seems goofy. what's the utility of that? that'd be a lot of stuff to remember: swipe up on photos to open messaging, swipe right on photos to open facebook, swipe down on settings to open brace browser, etc.???
If the swipe actions did things internal to that app like a swipe up on photos opened a certain folder or that app's settings that might make sense. Maybe I'm not understanding correctly.

Swipe actions can do a whole lot of things such as launching an app, launching a shortcut provided by an app (such as launching a contact, conversation, composing an email, running a backup, etc.), launching a system activity, etc.

what version? I'm on the 8.0.3 beta. Turning animation duration scale means you can't use split screen in the app drawer. A nova developer addressed this issue here on XDA, confirmed it, and said it's an android issue. It will work if animations are enabled. Are yours enabled?
I was on Nova for a long time. From the past couple of years I've been in Niagara Launcher. It fits my needs. Here is a screenshot of the launcher on my device

I've used Nova for years...won't use anything else. But, I set my animations to .5x in developer mode, so I don't see any "cool transitions".
