Question Looking for a new launcher - Google Pixel 7 Pro

What is the Best launcher with cool transitions

Could try nova launcher lawn chair and ruthless those are the only ones I can think of I know there are more

Nova, by far

Lawnchair beta 4. Everything else is just overhead imho.

Anyone running nova on the march update? I saw mention of a fix for animations or something similar when using 3rd party launchers. I wonder if they fixed the issue of not being able to use split screen with 3rd party launchers IF you have animations disabled.

None as third party launchers break animations with gestures

I've been using Nova since Android v5

I think you're hitting on what I said. The Nova developers replied in the nova thread here on XDA that this break is on the android side. Any third part launcher will not allow for split screen if animation duration scale is set to "off" or "0." This is ridiculous and google needs to fix it. There is a mention of fixes with third part launchers in the march update change log. I double it has to do with this specific issue, but I can hope.

I was using Microsoft Launcher for quite some time. Then switched back to Nova. There really is no competition.
Anyone who is used to the triple launch actions (tap, swipe up and swipe down) for every icon on homescreen would find it very difficult to switch to another launcher. I like to keep my home screen clean and uncluttered, and this feature helps me launch 36 apps with just 2 rows of apps (6 in each), including the dock.
Ofcourse, there are so many other features. I can't imagine how people use stock launchers on their devices.

It is a feature available with Nova launcher when you long press on any app icon. You'll need the Prime license for swipe actions though.

ah, i see. What are your swipe actions? It looks like the swipe actions are launcher/OS action like open quick settings though...so for example you have a swipe up action on photos set to open, say, your messaging app? That seems goofy. what's the utility of that? that'd be a lot of stuff to remember: swipe up on photos to open messaging, swipe right on photos to open facebook, swipe down on settings to open brace browser, etc.???
If the swipe actions did things internal to that app like a swipe up on photos opened a certain folder or that app's settings that might make sense. Maybe I'm not understanding correctly.

Swipe actions can do a whole lot of things such as launching an app, launching a shortcut provided by an app (such as launching a contact, conversation, composing an email, running a backup, etc.), launching a system activity, etc.

what version? I'm on the 8.0.3 beta. Turning animation duration scale means you can't use split screen in the app drawer. A nova developer addressed this issue here on XDA, confirmed it, and said it's an android issue. It will work if animations are enabled. Are yours enabled?

I was on Nova for a long time. From the past couple of years I've been in Niagara Launcher. It fits my needs. Here is a screenshot of the launcher on my device

I've used Nova for years...won't use anything else. But, I set my animations to .5x in developer mode, so I don't see any "cool transitions".

Which home screen replacement are you using?

Probably not the first thread on the subject but nevertheless: Which home screen replacement are you using and what do you like about it?
I developed a home screen replacement called "Simple Home" and it is all about simplicity. Feel free to try it out (search for "Simple Home" on Android market). I'm interested to hear what features people really want to have in their launcher!?
I use launcher pro. my favorite feature is having the scrollable dockbar.

At least you were somewhat up front about spam, if misleading in the title.
I am genuinely interested due to fact that I've developed an app in a certain way, not out of any commercial reasons! If it was an unsolicited post then I would a) not answer you b) not ask questions or c) not promote a free app. My post is meant as a basis for a discussions. Yours on the other hand is not!
regarding the scrollable dockbar in launcher pro: hmm yes, it is very nice feature to have some kind of menu bar with pinned apps. Strange though that it disappears when you go to the app drawer. On the other hand there needs to be some kind of icon for the return button some how.
something to try could be developing a way to organize the app drawer using sections, folders, etc. if I knew anything about app creation that's what I would be working on haha.

You can enable/disable the return home button in preferences. I particularly like the extended froyo theme dock for pinned apps. Keeps my desktop clean. I don't care for multiple dock rows as I just use 4 icons, but I like the options. I recently paid for the paid program of launcher pro.
The best part is you can make it simple or complex in options. Theme support is also nice... and its speed is wonderful.
I think launched pro has it figured out. If you are building a launcher perhaps try to think out side the box instead of trying to compete with such an already complete launcher.

Funny thing you mentioned it, because this is exactly what I've done for my app and of course using frecency sorting (frequency + recency). This is exactly what I want to have for my app drawer plus filtering to narrow down the list (which is also in there).

I am, I think the ones that are out there really do the Android style launchers to perfection. My approach is simplicity and speed. I personally don't believe in arrangeable desktops. It works fine when you have a few apps but when you have a fair amount installed it becomes tedious to do rearrangements..
ADW. But I like eye candy. If your going for simple you could have a niche to yourself.
One feature I'd like, played with a few programs last night as was not happy with any, is a task SWITCHER.
Double tap home and bring up a nice screen, if it can use a wall then even better.
No killing just switching.
Yes, I agree! Ubuntu- or mac-style task switcher would be truly great. I don't think that exposé will work as good on a mobile phone as on a PC
My approach was to add an indicator on top of app icons in my app drawer for apps that are running (according to the ActivityManager) together with the ability to sort the list on running apps. I find that simple and very useful..
I tried ADW, Helix, LauncherPro, Simple Home, and PandaHome. I like Panda's side docks & app hiding, and ADW's hidden dockbar & screen swipes to launch apps (though it still FCs on my Droid 2.1R) . I'd prefer something simple. I don't need more than 3 screens and usually go to 2. I don't need a task switcher because long-pressing Home shows my last six apps. I don't need flash, I just want it to work. ADW works for me now because I have four quick action buttons (so it replaced Helix) and six more in the dockbar, though I can scroll for more. Just my .02
I have used Stock sense, ADW, and LuncherPro in the last 3 days and I like LuncherPro by far the best. I like having the 4 icons on the bottom to clear icon clutter on the screen and the menu system is nice.

[Q] App Switching Gestures?

After using iOS's beta gestures and QNX/WebOS's card switching.. I'm of the opinion that Honeycomb badly needs a way to quickly switch between apps, vs tapping, scrolling and tapping.
Are there any mods/launchers/whatever that enables a quick way to jump between apps?
Thanks.
Pressing the recent apps button is one... but I'm guessing your looking for something else. ;-)
Here's some options:
"Power Strip: Multitasking Dock" (app in market that I had on my phone a while back)
SwipePad seems to be more what you're looking for though. It's in the market: https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.conduction.swipepad.android&feature=search_result
Edit: I digress, SwipePad does not seem to support the Transformer for some reason.
Try Wave Launcher... it works for the TF, but is a paid app unlike SwipePad.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mobilemerit.wavelauncher&feature=related_apps
Thanks guys, I'll check them out when I get home.
To help clarify, I'm looking for a way to switch between applications with gestures vs tapping the recent apps list (which, I find organizes apps oddly at times).
On iOS 5 (and in 4.3 beta) there are 4 finger swipes to switch between apps. I have this enabled on my jailbroken iPad and it works wonderfully well.
QNX you swipe from the bezel (can't really be pulled off on the TF, but its an example) to switch easily between apps.
WebOS you swipe up and switch apps.
Ideally, I'd love to see the iOS method as a possibility, it's incredibly quick and smooth. It's about as fast as alt+tab/cmd+tab program switching on desktops. The HC recent apps list is nice visually, but I don't feel like it's a very quick solution.
Anyways, don't take any of this as complaining, I'm just wondering what's out there, and thanks again for the suggestions, I'll check them out.
i was able to get swipepad working on my transformer. I pulled the apk from my phone and sideloaded it on my tablet. It's not optimized for Honeycomb so it doesn't use the entire screen but it worked well without any FCs. Even the Tasking and MorePad addons worked well. Addons available to purchase from market.

i know exactly what ur talking about and unfortunately, none of the apps mentioned do this. they are just like little shortcuts to the app switcher just wrapped around in different UIs. it wont do what u want it to do. im looking for a gesture app that overlays the whole screen and can use 5 fingers to swipe to another app or something of that sort. none of these apps do this.

[Q] Moto G App Drawer (KK 4.4.3)

Hi, Today I boought a Moto G, and immediately upgraded and rooted it to Android 4.4.3. (Previously I'd been using a Galaxy S2 and a Xperia S)
The first thing I noticed is the changes in the app drawer, which I hate. I do not like that widgets and apps are mixed, I mean I liked the cycling thru apps in Jelly Bean, and having to select the widgets tab to cycle thru widgets.
Another thing I noticed is that the Moto G doesn't have an options button. While in the App drawer, all 3 buttons are redundant:
Left side button (Where options usually is) is now back, which takes you to the homescreen...
Middle button (Home) Takes you home .... -In Jelly bean you could long press to open recent apps-
Right side button - Opens recent apps
With that in mind you can tell that you're losing a lot of customizing options, for example, I used to click options and hide apps in Galaxy S2, or sort apps alphabetically, by use, recent install, etc...
I guess my questions is: Is there any way to get those features back using the stock launcher?
To sort apps customly, to separate widgets and make the app drawer cycle thru apps like it's supposed to?
I appreciate the help
I assume the launcher you are using is the stock launcher provided in Android.
If you want more options in the app drawer then it would be better to install another launcher.
My prefered launcher is Apex but I know that a lot of people are using Nova as well.
Both very smooth launcher with lots of options.

Hi Mickey, thanks for your reply.
Yes, I was using stock launcher at the moment of the question, the question basically was if it was possible with stock launcher... I assumed it was not so I downloaded Nova Launcher, but it also doesn't have the option to customly organize apps, like dragging and dropping one before the other in the drawer. If I hold on an app it takes it to the home screen which is not what I want
Also with Nova I could only separate widgets from apps if I made the drawer scroll vertically, I want horizontal with multiple pages, but widgets on a different tab.
What custom launcher has the option to do these things?
Thank you again for your time
I think Solo Launcher has the features you require.

There are no changes in the app drawer. The stock Google launcher has always worked this way. If your previous devices worked differently, then you were not using the Jellybean launcher, which looked and worked exactly the same way as you are describing.

Nope, that was never possible with stock Jellybean. If it worked that way on your S2, it's either because you had installed a third-party launcher or because that is how Samsung's own launcher (is it still called Touchwiz?) worked. I have never used anything other than Nexus or Google Play Edition devices (as well as played around a bit with Cyanogen), so I couldn't say for sure.
I used to click options and hide apps in Galaxy S2, or sort apps alphabetically, by use, recent install, etc...

No, because they were never in the stock launcher. You will have to try various other third-party launchers until you find one you like. I'm generally happy with the stock one, so I'm afraid I would be useless at recommendations.

I haven't tried that one. Personally I use Nova and have been for years. It's always been stellar for me.
My main complaints with Pixel Launcher was that clock app as well as the inability to remove the Google bar at the bottom. I took people's recommendations here and tried Nova Launcher. No complaints...I even decided to pay for Nova Prime so I could enable the gestures and love the 2-tap screen off, using the home button to launch settings, and the swipe down to pull the quick settings. I haven't noticed any notable lag and it doesn't appear to use that much more memory than the Pixel launcher did.
Second Nova. I bought the full version years ago, and it's fantastic.
Well I've been using Nova for years with prime. It's my go to launcher. But lately for some reason. After a day or two. There's this Nast y stutter when I open apps. When I use pixel launcher, it's smooth like it's supposed to be. Even if I close the app and open it right after it still does it. Those things bug me..lol no oun intended. So I'm just waiting for the next update. I was gonna set it up right now without the beta. I'll report back.
Anyone know a launcher which will hide the navbar. I know lineage OS has the option to hide status and/or navbar.. I don't feel like using the adb hack to go immersive mode, would be nice if a launcher offered the option
I wonder if they'll allow you to remove it in Android P. Some things they do are so illogical I don't get it.

I have DP-3 and it is still there. Things will change with the final 9.0 release but it looks like this is here to stay.
Lol why do they do that? I don't understand
Is this still unale to be removed on android 9? I need to update but have to root it so I'm being lazy.
It's there permanently by default, though of course there are many apps that allow you to toggle immersive mode without root so if you want to hide it it's very simple to do so.

3rd party launchers - recents tab

I'm currently on Android 10 and reluctantly sticking with the pixel launcher. When I use Lawnchair or Nova I get the the recents tab as sort of an overlay over the homescreen. This happens a few times a day and the only thing I can do to get rid of it is to reboot. This is wicked annoying. Has anyone experienced this and/or know if there's a fix?

I don't use gesture navigation, rather I prefer the old-style three-button system navigation (System settings -> System -> Gestures -> System navigation -> 3-button navigation). I'm not sure this suggestion will help you but it was offered to me through the Discord support site:
After a reboot go into Nova Launcher's settings and scroll near the bottom. Click on "Set Default Launcher". The normal Android prompt asks if you want to "Use Nova Launcher as Home". Tap "Always". It will appear as if the Nova Launcher Settings window is re-drawn. Back out of Nova's settings.
Now when you tap on the square recents button you'll see your recent application list in a manner which is similar to Android 9. Even though you told Android 10 to always use Nova Launcher, after each reboot you'll need to follow this process to get the three-button navigation to work in Nova Launcher the way it traditionally has. So this isn't really a fix but a circumvention for how Android 10 and third-party launcher software work together.

Hello,
You can read Google's official statement and our statement about the issues you and anyone else using Android 10 is experiencing. Please take note that Google admits to this being broken on their end of things and that a fix will be coming in a future update to Android.
We understand that this statement was made 2 months during a beta of Android 10. However, as is stated in the below URL, this issue will remain broken even after Android 10 is released in its final form, which was September 3rd, 2019. What this means is that Google knew well ahead of time that they had no plans to fix this until much later so it's still a relative issue today.

Their entire statement is below. Please note that the statement was from some time in July 2019, but it still pertains today and will continue to pertain until Google includes a fix for it in an upcoming release of Android 10.

Yeah, looks like I'm stuck with the Pixel Launcher, which is not too bad really.
I knew Android 10 gestures don't work with 3rd party launcher, but now recents is buggy as well... Almost as if they tied the recents in with the launcher.
Don't want to sound like I'm ranting, but... My Huawei had these gestures since Android Pie (EMUI 9) and it worked properly from day one. Just saying...
I'll have to wait.
