offline local fm radio from uk - General Questions and Answers

So a feature they removed that I allways used was the ability to listen to local fm radio using headphone as antenna, can't no more but was wondering if its possible in any other ways, im from uk and using s8, doesn't have a hidden radio either unfortunately. Some u just need to enable it, but mine, typical. In never a lucky type.
I read Google play music has cache radio so can listen offline but that's no good because you have to be subscribed to premium, 10 quid a month to listen to free radio stations no chance, any ideas ?
Thx

I don't think that offline radio is possible in Android, since it's live. If you ever want an online app there's "Tune In".
Otherwise you also can buy a portable radio, I remember have one when I was kid, that was fun but it'll take a full pocket to fit that ancient machine
Here is one if you ever wonder where to find that : https://www.amazon.com/Personal-Por...ony+walkman+radio+am+fm&qid=1593496226&sr=8-4
Have a good day

What's my cheapest option to trial GPS Navigation?

Hi all
I'm toying with the idea of getting a GPS based navigation system to use with my QTEK 2020i.
I think that the Navigator kits are quite pricey for someone who isn't sure they;lll get the use out of them though.
What's my cheapest option if I wanted to try this stuff out?
I don't mind buying a generic GPS receiver as I'm sure I can use it for something else (!?????) other than satnav.
Is it as simple as buying one of those £29 GPS reciever jobbys off ebay and then downloading a trial version of tomtom???
Cheers all
Wayne
there is no version for trialing tomtom. your best bet would be to to buy a kit from 1 of the online shops to be honest and i wouldn't recomend ebay as they are not legal copy's and hence don't work properly

eh?
So I can't download like a 30-day trial!...How do they expect people to know if the product is anygood?
I know it probably is but that for me isn't the point...I want to see if I'll actually use it and how I'll use it, that's how I'll know if it's worth me buying it.
Cheers

Well, I bought a Qstarz BT-Q880 32-channel GPS receiver, which works excellently with the XDA 2i and TomTom 5.
However, I did download TomTom 5 via BitTorrent... Purely for evaluation purposes. Of course.
If you have €369 to lend me (with long-term repayments at a low interest rate) so I can buy the damn thing straight away, then hell I'll buy it straight away. I do think they charge an arm and a leg - and the Plus maps (the more detailed versions of the maps) cost a good €150 extra - at least.
The long and short of it is that you'll have to break the law in some way or another if you want to evaluate GPS software before you make your own purchase of the software - which I do intend to do when I have the cash (Uni students don't really have that much spare to be honest, but I do buy the software for my XDA whenever I can).
just to say though, no matter how you aquire the software, a basic GPS receiver is still gonna cost you around £45 - £50 via Ebay.
And I'm not sure what other use you would have for it other than SatNav, except maybe wifi hotspot logging.
Geocacheing!

still, that's a lot cheaper than paying £££ on TomTom!
If I did it this way and then used a less-than-legit version to trial it, I could then upgrade to a proper version later and then sell the GPS receiver.
If I buy TomTom now and don't use/like it then I stand to loose a lot more money (especially seeing as the general impression people seem to have is that TomTom on ebay is fake or no good).
...you see my predicament
Cheers
Wayne
If you did fancy Geocaching or even just the chance of an Ordanace survey map. I recommend 'aquiring' a copy Memory Map too. I have both on my xda iis, Tomtom drives you to the local area, and memory map will plot everything after that.
Now that sounds like a plan...

dispite all it's bad press on most websites tomtom on the whole is a very good product ,i persoanlly havn't had any reall issues with tomtom apart from the problem being the sd card being to slow with the 2i , i've signed up for the traffic updates which i find to be about 90% correct
i also think most of the problems arise because people are using illegal versions

Not sure I agree with the problems all being down to illegal copies (more so on the 2i).
This is my main concern. If I shell out for an app that crashes etc with little to no support/help from TomTom.
As it is I will probably try a dodgy copy and if it's stable I'll get a proper version. I know that a bad copy may be the cause of the crashes but with TomTom not supplying a trial copy how do they expect people to make an informed decision? You wouldn't buy a car without test driving it would you?!
Nearly all software (including that on the Pocket PC platform) provide trial versions. I've even seen some posts on here to suggest that TomTom used to do this...but not now for some reason?
Lost business I say.
Cheers
Wayne
dotn got to halford and have play with a tomtom go or one the app is the same as is the maps as anis the andy says there have been problems with the 2i this is mainly down to a hardware issue the way round it most users have found is to get a the fastest sd card you can find currently mappopolis is the olny vendor to have a 30 day trial
Aye, I must say for the record that TomTom on my 2i MOSTLY works fine, it only crashes out if you do something like try to use the Ring Number feature - it'll show the screen, but as soon as you select the Point Of Interest category you want, it has a think about it then crashes back to the desktop.
The same if you load up too many Points of Interest on a map, I've also found. I guess that's most likely down to the fairly old SD card I have, an old PNY 256Mb card - but it does the job very nicely, and just has enough space on it (6.66Mb! remaining) to store the TT files, the Netherlands map and the Great Britain Plus map. If you want to load more maps though, you'll definitely need the 1Gb card, the France plus map is something like 370mb - and the main Western Europe map is even bigger.

I can't say I've ever tried it, but Geocaching is a bit of a GPS treasure hunt. People leave these caches hidden in "interesting" places and provide the GPS coordinates to a website, then other people can use their GPS devices to locate the cache and leave a message in the notebook, take photos with the camera or maybe even recieve a little prize. It's for those odd people who go outside, when they could be huddled up in the warm over their PC's
If that vaguely interests you you could look at

www.mapopolis.com
Mapopolis looks promising from the site, their bundles are quite handy if you don't want all the extra steps of buying the phone holder, buying the carkit... All of which I did, hasssssssle - I do think I would miss the nifty 3D view which TomTom displays whilst you're navigating your way through the world, but I guess that's only because I'm feeling spoilt now.
When it comes to caching, geocaching.com used to be one of the definitive sources of info on the net, but it's suffering server problems at the moment.
Other good sites:

have you upgraded your tomtom as mine did exactly the same till the new upgrade i havn't had to soft reset since then
I don't have to soft reset, the program just crashes back to the Today screen. I don't really need to use the Ring Number feature anyway, kinda pointless as I can just 118 500.
The issue is moot anyway, since I'm using a less-than-100%-legitimate copy... I'm sure once I have a job post-University I'll be able to afford to buy it, but until then I'm not keeping my hopes up.

Any apps to get full fm radio?

I use Time in Radio and it found most local stations, but I'm wondering if theres another app I don't know of that will find all local fm radio stations. I am in San Diego/CA area, I'm most interested in finding rock 105.3 for their morning talk show. You can stream live radio off their site, but it doesn't work on my phone

I also have a Captivate. And a Galaxy S i9000. The i9000 has a built in radio tuner. Picks up all the local AM/FM stations. How great is that? Unfortunately the 3g radio doesn't work in my area so I'm going to get rid of it.
Maybe our Captivate's still have the radio tuner hardware? Would like to know.
The Captivate does NOT, and NEVER will have a radio tuner. If you want to listen to a radio station on your Captivate, find a radio app and hope that your favorite FM station has a simulcast online. I recommend WunderRadio, it is a paid app, but it's the best I have found.
Search the market for Tunein if you like local radio (all one word)
I use TuneIn Radio and it has all my local stations.

Honestly I dont think its GPS because it found my local's indoors in my office.
It has an option to use location based data for stations. This can come from GPS or if you have the WiFi option enabled too. It also allows you to search. It is one of my favorite apps, and the price cant be beat.

Optimus 3D FM Radio?

Just noticed that either Í'm blind or there is no FM Radio app on my Optimus 3D
At the same time every possible site lists FM Radio as present on the O3D.
nothing on mine either
Hmm. Nothing about FM Radio on LGE site
http://www.lg.com/uk/mobile-phones/all-lg-phones/LG-android-mobile-phone-P920.jsp
But my mobile operator (Vivacom Bulgaria) has FM on it's site as a feature:
http://www.vivacom.bg/en/residential/devices/section/mobile_phones/view/lg_optimus_3_d_p920/details
Same at Orange UK:
http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phones/lg-optimus-3d
They even insist that there is RDS with the radio
Not that it's a deal breaker but I seriously think of making a scandal at Vivacom and insisting on some sort of discount because of a missing advertised feature
I got it from Gum Mobile, which also lists it
http://www.gummobile.com/phones/LG_Optimus_3D_P920_Sim_Free.aspx
I'm going to ask LG UK now
LG italy told us that they will add fm radio in the next roms...
At least that means that the FM chip is present. That's good news.
The radio quality is normally crap/limited!!
I just use Tune in from the marketplace.
when are people going to start adding DAB to the phones?
I want to listen to a specific station that's only on DAB and internet but the internet version doesn't do commentary for my local team, it cuts off and they play music so I have to listen to the DAB version only

I used TuneIn for 4 days the week before last for 25 minutes to work and 25 minutes from work, in those 4 days I used up 80% of my monthly bandwidth so TuneIn isn't an option for some of us.
The Dev phones have an FM Radio app, but it was pretty buggy. Maybe LG wants to tweak it before releasing it on the world
Is it possible to get the apk from the dev ROM? As soon as the new season kicks off I will need some sort of radio to follow some games that I can't watch live or on TV
Would certainly be useful as I do not believe the new ROM is coming until October.
I did think it bit odd NOT to have an FM Radio as usually its bundled on the Bluetooth chip so not necessarily a choice made by the manufacturer, its "just there" as standard.
http://twitter.com/#!/GumMobile/status/90444001764847616
Hi, LG have disabled it as it was causing interference. The tech is in the phone its due to be activated via update in the future

What kind of interference I wonder?
I have already experienced the old speed up / slow down of music when using a bluetooth headset identical to what my N900 suffered. This was due to using a combined Bluetooth/WiFi antenna, I suspect its the same here.

After all, $ 10 is too high a price. Available only 15 million songs. You can listen anywhere, anytime and can listen many different devices (mobile, pc etc.) I would rather buy the $ 10 album containing 12 tracks... No. no no .. I should have to think first what to say.
American network operators the pricing and quality is ****ed up. But many believe it is a lesser evil than $ 10 per month.
Spotify will not stay online

Known bug in Spotify on Honeycomb. Solution is easy but harsh: never make playlists offline available.
As long as you stream everything - you're okay. If you make a playlist offline available, it'll sync the first time and after that it'll keep saying it's disconnected.
And it's definitely worth the 10 bucks, I've been paying it for months and months (in Europe) and it saved me a ****load of money or time. If I had to buy all the music I've listened from Spotify, I'd had to sell my TF to pay the bills. Maybe even twice...
If your musictaste is pretty "conservative", not always looking for new stuff and getting addicted to it - it might indeed not be worth the money.
It's totaly worth it to have a paid subscription, i pay for premium
I use spotify all the time (at home, party's, cell phone etc)
The majority of the music i listen to is on spotify and i don't listen to comecial radio music

I still can't get it work. Every time I choose a song, I get an info bar with no info and an OK box to click. It reads my TF on my network, but it won't stream any music. I had no online playlists (I deleted everything just to make sure).
It works well on my PC--a lot of great music that seems to stream more quickly than Google Music.

[Q] Radio FM in Nexus 5?

Hello,
I just would like to know if Nexus 5 have a working radio FM. I got a Nexus 4 and radio FM was cut by hardware. I would not buy a N5 if it is no possible to get a radio FM app in a Nexus 5. I mean a radio FM using N5 hardware, no headphones with FM receptor. The specs filtered some weeks ago were giving a radio FM, but who knows ...
This requirement is demanded on many countries (like Spain) because the radio online spend the internet quota in few hours.
Thanks.

I can't speak for the Nexus 5 but I doubt it has FM as I haven't read anything about it as a feature. Motorola had this feature in early versions of Droid phones. I suspect it was cut for exactly the same reasons that Spain requires it, forces you to use online streaming if you want to listen to music. I would rather it be included, besides music, in the event of an emergency when cell towers are down, you have the ability to use it as a radio. I have a Sony Bluetooth headset SBH50 which includes a FM radio - works great for me in the Metro NYC area. Since the FM radio required a headset for the antenna on the phone, having it in the Sony isn't a bad compromise.

I don't think Nexus 5 has FM radio hardware built in. I have seen HTC puts it in there phones. I don't know about others
Nexus One and Nexus S had FM radios. The G2 has a FM Radio... so the hardware WAS in there.

Unless you have a constant need to listen to live radio for certain anouncements, I don't really see the need for a radio on mobile phones in this day of age.
Traffic updates? Maybe turn on your car radio? Every single car manufactured has a radio as standard.
News updates? The web is the best source of news, and with many news apps already available as well as rss feeds are your friend.
Music? pre-copy them at home with your home internet connection. 16GB/32GB is more than plenty of space for a decent sized collection, unless you use it all up to store porn or something else. Plus many radio station's official websites lets you download past broadcasted shows up to a week old if not more.
i love it, ride roadbike and listen to live broadcast of weekend soccer matches. sorry for my english
There are several specific situations a FM Radio would be good. Like if you're camping and don't have internet. Local radio stations have fireworks where the music is synced to the booms. Radio shows that can't/don't podcast. Radio contests.
Etc. Etc.
I travel and don't always get internet (airports suck at cell signal). I never used it when I had it aside from 1-2 Times but I'm sure other would find it very handy.

Another one is at the gyms where the TVs are broadcasting on FM radio frequencies. Having a tuner option would allow you to listen to that. ,y question is when are they gonna get TV tuners on phones. That would be nice.

Come on, it's publicly stated that LG nexus phones don't have a fm radio chip. Google want us to use the web, the cloud, so no sdcard and no radio.
This post should answer any questions, if not, ask in the thread

Also, the service manual that leaked before the Nexus 5 dropped indicated it WOULD have FM radio.
Not only does 'not everyone" not have unlimited data on their phones, MOST people don't. Most people are capped at 2-4GB per month. In 2-3 days without power due to a big storm, I sure want FM radio on my phone. I wish I could get AM radio on my phone. In day-to-day life, I don't want to waste data streaming a local radio station when I should just be able to turn on my phone's FM radio. Yes, I have a D-cell boombox. I have a rechargeable fm radio. I have a crank AM/FM/weather radio. I also ALWAYS have my phone with me. I still want radio on my phone because 'just in case'. Even if I rarely use it, I just want it. I hate ever needing a tool and not having it. So I guess Samsung and HTC it is. I still can't figure out if Nexus 5 has FM radio like the leak said it would. I Google it, but get no definitive answer. Just momos with obvious, or sarcastic comments that don't know, but feel taking the time to respond with irrelevancies is somehow not a big waste of everyone's time.

If you want FM radio, get an HTC One. The Galaxy S4 doesn't even have a radio, and the Nexus 5 doesn't support it, out of the box anyway. Maybe there's a chance a dev can get it working down the road.
