I just would like to know if Nexus 5 have a working radio FM. I got a Nexus 4 and radio FM was cut by hardware. I would not buy a N5 if it is no possible to get a radio FM app in a Nexus 5. I mean a radio FM using N5 hardware, no headphones with FM receptor. The specs filtered some weeks ago were giving a radio FM, but who knows ...
This requirement is demanded on many countries (like Spain) because the radio online spend the internet quota in few hours.

I can't speak for the Nexus 5 but I doubt it has FM as I haven't read anything about it as a feature. Motorola had this feature in early versions of Droid phones. I suspect it was cut for exactly the same reasons that Spain requires it, forces you to use online streaming if you want to listen to music. I would rather it be included, besides music, in the event of an emergency when cell towers are down, you have the ability to use it as a radio. I have a Sony Bluetooth headset SBH50 which includes a FM radio - works great for me in the Metro NYC area. Since the FM radio required a headset for the antenna on the phone, having it in the Sony isn't a bad compromise.

Lol. I do realize the need for some to have it. I always tell people to stream the radio but forget not everyone has unlimited data.
I don't think Nexus 5 has FM radio hardware built in. I have seen HTC puts it in there phones. I don't know about others
Nexus One and Nexus S had FM radios. The G2 has a FM Radio... so the hardware WAS in there.

Unless you have a constant need to listen to live radio for certain anouncements, I don't really see the need for a radio on mobile phones in this day of age.
Traffic updates? Maybe turn on your car radio? Every single car manufactured has a radio as standard.
News updates? The web is the best source of news, and with many news apps already available as well as rss feeds are your friend.
Music? pre-copy them at home with your home internet connection. 16GB/32GB is more than plenty of space for a decent sized collection, unless you use it all up to store porn or something else. Plus many radio station's official websites lets you download past broadcasted shows up to a week old if not more.

There are several specific situations a FM Radio would be good. Like if you're camping and don't have internet. Local radio stations have fireworks where the music is synced to the booms. Radio shows that can't/don't podcast. Radio contests.
Etc. Etc.
I travel and don't always get internet (airports suck at cell signal). I never used it when I had it aside from 1-2 Times but I'm sure other would find it very handy.

Another one is at the gyms where the TVs are broadcasting on FM radio frequencies. Having a tuner option would allow you to listen to that. ,y question is when are they gonna get TV tuners on phones. That would be nice.

Come on, it's publicly stated that LG nexus phones don't have a fm radio chip. Google want us to use the web, the cloud, so no sdcard and no radio.

Also, the service manual that leaked before the Nexus 5 dropped indicated it WOULD have FM radio.
Not only does 'not everyone" not have unlimited data on their phones, MOST people don't. Most people are capped at 2-4GB per month. In 2-3 days without power due to a big storm, I sure want FM radio on my phone. I wish I could get AM radio on my phone. In day-to-day life, I don't want to waste data streaming a local radio station when I should just be able to turn on my phone's FM radio. Yes, I have a D-cell boombox. I have a rechargeable fm radio. I have a crank AM/FM/weather radio. I also ALWAYS have my phone with me. I still want radio on my phone because 'just in case'. Even if I rarely use it, I just want it. I hate ever needing a tool and not having it. So I guess Samsung and HTC it is. I still can't figure out if Nexus 5 has FM radio like the leak said it would. I Google it, but get no definitive answer. Just momos with obvious, or sarcastic comments that don't know, but feel taking the time to respond with irrelevancies is somehow not a big waste of everyone's time.

If you want FM radio, get an HTC One. The Galaxy S4 doesn't even have a radio, and the Nexus 5 doesn't support it, out of the box anyway. Maybe there's a chance a dev can get it working down the road.

I have read and read and read and read and have found that there is no CLEAR answer to the FM radio question (one tear downer claims there is definitely no FM radio chip but that there is hope of a transmitter(DIFFERENT I THINK) somewhere in the PHONE). SOOO i propose a bounty of $20 to the one who can give me a %()^*#@$ radio app so i can listen to my talk radio station on my phone. I wont close it as I agree I have not found a 100% sure answer but i am 99% sure it doesnt have the hardware. I also never saw ATT admit that it did, even in the training docs I got it never mentioned it, It was one of the reasons I wanted to hold off getting it.
I also missed the FM radio of my Tilt 2, but I found this item on eBay that gives me pretty much what I want via BT and I can use it standalone without the phone if I want. Bought one about amonth ago and have been very happy with it. Call and music quality are excellent and battery life is better than 20 hours running and more than a week on standby. I also have a pair of Motorola S9s, but I prefer the in-ear style of these for mountain biking. Price has dropped $15 since I bought mine.

I would add $25 to get a fully working fm radio with no other hardware.
it might have the hardware as the wifi/BT chip is the same as in the SGS.
The antenna may not be solder on the headphone jack.

as in many devices this is most probably the definite answer , YES the h/w is there but its not connected ..
Tune in Radio is free and definitly worth it ..

The Captivate uses the Broadcom BCM4751, which is GPS only. The I9000 series SGS uses a different broadcom chip which includes FM radio. There is no way to get true FM radio no matter what bounty.

It doesn't have FM anything. Period. The device itself doesn't have the physical capability. No amount of coding is ever going to change that.

im not sure that that is true, the old development thread had seemingly knowledgable people that thought at least one chip had fm capabilities.
problem is that without an antenna the chip is useless. if any one knows the hardware and driver coding that's great but modifying for an antenna is a problem. i dont know jack about coding and drivers but i can solder and know a couple clever ways to solder to surface mount boards fairly safely. maybe when i get a substitute for the captivate i can be a guini pig but first somebody needs to see if there are any chips that can support fm radio, if the chip can output to the dac in any way and see if they can replace or edit the samsung drivers and anything else. then if there is some posibility and a dev that will commit themself to the software we can think about making an antenna.
ill put up money if someone decides to take the chalenge. also would like to try a ffc mod but that will require some butchering of the phone, i need an infuse or galaxy s 2 before i butcher the cappy.

ahh, i re read it, (it's been months since i looked at it) now i see that some models of the galaxy s have a dedicated fm chip si4709 or something. and some have a gps chip that can support fm bcm4329, the speculation was about the bcm4329 chip which is not in the captivate but once the conversation got started about that chip people were dicussing it for phones with that chip and there was little in the thread noting that it did not actually apply to the captivate. somehow it was only mentioned maybe once that the captivate doesnt use that chip. there is no evidence that the si4709 chip is there or properly connected. i must have over looked the model gps chip they were discussing last i read the thread.
and yes i know many devices use the headphones as the antenna the problem had there been a fm radio chip that was hardware disabled would be esablishing a connection to the headphone jack. knowing where to put the wire is one thing. soldering it in there is another. you cant just use an old soldering iron on these things.

I used TuneIn for 4 days the week before last for 25 minutes to work and 25 minutes from work, in those 4 days I used up 80% of my monthly bandwidth so TuneIn isn't an option for some of us.
The Dev phones have an FM Radio app, but it was pretty buggy. Maybe LG wants to tweak it before releasing it on the world
Is it possible to get the apk from the dev ROM? As soon as the new season kicks off I will need some sort of radio to follow some games that I can't watch live or on TV
Would certainly be useful as I do not believe the new ROM is coming until October.
I did think it bit odd NOT to have an FM Radio as usually its bundled on the Bluetooth chip so not necessarily a choice made by the manufacturer, its "just there" as standard.

What kind of interference I wonder?
I have already experienced the old speed up / slow down of music when using a bluetooth headset identical to what my N900 suffered. This was due to using a combined Bluetooth/WiFi antenna, I suspect its the same here.

I've seen a few people asking if the Skyrocket has an FM chip, or if it's capable of providing FM, so I know this has been looked into. I've also seen where the Skyrocket is advertised as having FM radio. Have any of the developers on this site looked into enabling FM radio on the Skyrocket, or are we once again being completely screwed over by the corporate Nazi retards over at AT&T?
Are there currently any procedures for testing Android phones for the FM chip? Are there any apps for using it across a broad range of phones, or anything like that?

You can always have apps for radios but there is no built in FM. GO to market and search for different radio apps. They have a lot.

The apps available in the market have many radio stations. Many radio stations also live stream on their websites. I would like to see someone make the skyrocket work as a FM transmitter. Would be awesome, but I guess I should just buy a head unit with Bluetooth.
For me FM is a nice-to-have feature but given the massive number of ways to get audio on this device, having FM feels like having a CD player in your car (something which car manufacturers are quickly starting to abandon.)

Prior to buying a Skyrocket I remember reading websites that state Skyrocket has FM, and NFC. The NFC aspect can be confirmed by looking the wording on the battery, but not FM.

In my quest for the skyrocket FM radio. I have found many websites that state the FM radio is available via RDS Data(Google search it). Not to long after that I found this app on xda called spirit FM. It says it supports our processor. Supposedly FM radio via RDS Data. I download it and the app itself seems to run ok (occasional fc) but no actual radio coming through phone. But there is a TON of settings on this app. Most of which I'm not familiar with. Maybe someone with more knowledge than me could figure it out. Here is the thread I found it in

My understanding is that if there is a transmitter/receiver and everything is hooked up the way it needs to be (it most likely is not) it's still a bunch of hacking to get it enabled kind of like how getting bluetooth enabled on the nook color was.
If you use Root Explorer or similar and look into Ueventd.rc you will see:
/dev/radio0 0644 fm_radio

There are also several other mentions of fm radio throughout the OS. Of course the question is, is this just generic code that appears in all Gingerbread builds or is it specific to the device. To me, it looks specific to the device.

I'd bet it's generic. Unless there actually IS a working /dev/radio0 device.
US variants of the Galaxy S2 class of devices all seem to have no FM possible.
I think my app is just about the only generic FM app and "detection tool" for Android. Spirit FM on the Market or the latest test app with Proprietary APIs support here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/7cnuj12ul53uwzg/Spirit_FM_Radio_v120126.apk
Send me a debug log and I can look closer. This works better if your device is rooted.
Select Menu->Help->EM Logs and after a few seconds. enter "SkyRocket" in the email text and press send.

I continue to see more and more evidence that it will never work.
There has not been a SINGLE US version of a Galaxy S or Galaxy S2 "class" device that supports FM.
This includes new and old Tabs, as well as the "flagship" Galaxy Nexus and the US version of the Galaxy Note.
The situation here in Canada is the same, except we were lucky enough to get the International version of the S. Despite Samsung's extreme popularity, the Galaxy S I have may be the last Galaxy class device I own and can support, unless and until this changes.
OTOH, you CAN get a Samsung Galaxy Player with FM in North America and my app works on it, stock and un-rooted even. This isn't a phone so the carriers didn't get their dirty mitts on it.

An "advertising mistake" because they just grab materials for the International version and do quick, cheap modifications. But ad people are not tech people and don't really understand all that "spec nonsense".

Just be careful not to read the specs for the International versions of the S, S2, Note etc., like the ad guys did.
The US/Canadian market phones are distinct, as specified by the US carriers who contracted for the development of these purposely FM cripped devices. Free market forces, LOL.

Hi Mike, just to confirm, are you saying that the Rogers S2 also doesn't have the FM radio? I installed your app (very cool) and it does something, but I don't ever hear any sound when I dial in a station.

iHeartRadio
radio.com (garbage, mostly doesn't work on Skyrocket)
But if you are a purist
that has to have a specific station, yes they do exist and you can get it in high quality for free, but you will have to do the leg work, look into:
XiiaLive Lite (AAC decoding)
and find the AAC streams on your own on streamtheworld.
When I was looking for the stations that I wanted to listen to, any official search service for services like streamtheworld would not let me search for the stations I really wanted. So you have to search just the keywords of what you are looking for on google, and most likely someone has posted the streams to the radio station that you are looking for in a forum somewhere.

AFAICT the Canadian carriers are now using the variants made for US carriers, perhaps with some small tweak or another. "Robelus" seems just as bad as AT&T, Verizon etc. now in this regard.
Likely, if your S2 is rooted, the app starts and shows "FM: BC". That means the Broadcom combination chip is being used. But these purposely crippled Galaxy devices have no antenna or audio connections to the FM part of the combo chip.
If you want, you can send me a debug log with Menu->Help->EM Logs and after a few seconds, enter your phone model and ROM in the email text and press send. But I'm pretty sure the above is true.
I can understand the US lawmakers deciding not to pass that bill requiring FM chips in phones. But now I feel that the carriers are emboldened, and purposely crippling the devices they order from the manufacturers.

No, there is not an FM radio in the g2x anyways. You have to use an internet based radio app.

Messed myself up with this as well. The O2X has the FM radio chip in it, while the G2x doesn't (To this day, I don't know why the G2x doesn't have a working FM Radio.) Like noahk423 said, get TuneIn or some other internet radio app.

the G2X does have the internal hardware for FM, it is missing the antena and you have to solder a few points on the board to enable it in hardware. then you have to do some software hacks. some1 did it like a year ago but it was not worth the effort in the end.

Ah, I may just go look for that thread!
So a feature they removed that I allways used was the ability to listen to local fm radio using headphone as antenna, can't no more but was wondering if its possible in any other ways, im from uk and using s8, doesn't have a hidden radio either unfortunately. Some u just need to enable it, but mine, typical. In never a lucky type.
I read Google play music has cache radio so can listen offline but that's no good because you have to be subscribed to premium, 10 quid a month to listen to free radio stations no chance, any ideas ?

I don't think that offline radio is possible in Android, since it's live. If you ever want an online app there's "Tune In".
Otherwise you also can buy a portable radio, I remember have one when I was kid, that was fun but it'll take a full pocket to fit that ancient machine

Think you might be rite, I guess I was wondering if theres any free apps that do the offline cache thing google play music does, only u can only do that if u pay premium on google play music or I'd use that
