[Geek Lab] Is it safe to power your phone with a laptop charger - Honor 9X Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello guys!
Is it bad to charge a cell phone from a laptop?
With improvements to technology, some manufacturers produce smaller, lightweight, more portable laptop chargers with the Type-C connector, for example, HONOR MagicBook Series is equipped with new lightweight (160 grams) Type-C charger.
As the popular charge port technology, Type C means the same plug can be used across devices. As HONOR claimed, this handy charger powers the MagicBook laptop with lightning-fast 65W charging, rocketing the charge to 46% in just half an hour.
Besides, it can also fast-charge most recent HUAWEI/HONOR phones, including Honor’s View30 and View30 Pro models, as well as Huawei's Mate 30 Pro, Mate 30, P30 Pro, Mate X, nova 5, and nova 5 Pro models.
However, some users are concerned that if such mix-and-match charging could damage the phone, or even cause it to explode?
In other words, is it safe to power your phone with a laptop charger?

The answer is YES!
You can rest easy knowing that your phone is designed with high-level safeguards, as it can regulate the incoming charging current, rather than simply accepting whatever the charger outputs.
For instance, if your phone supports 5V/2A charging, it will intelligently adjust the 9V/2A charger power output accordingly. The MagicBook Series supports 5V/2A, 9V/2A, 12V/2A, 12V/3A, 20V/3.25A, and 15V/3A outputs, all of which are safe when used with a phone.
Therefore, for MagicBook users, it is totally safe to power your phone with the laptop's power supply.
Isn’t it nice taking a single charger on your outings, now that your laptop charger can be slipped into your backpack with ease?

Choetech 2 Pack Micro USB to USB C Adapters

The first thing I usually notice about aftermarket USB C is how they connect to the charging port. These were very clicky and you know when they are seated. When connected to micro-usb they have a very nice click as well.
Charging speeds were the exact same as rated on the charger. These do not hinder charging speeds at all. My phone charged just as quickly as I expected with my desktop charger - Not fast charging, of course, as that would require full USB-C.
I moved some files over with these as well and got the expected USB speeds. The connector did not slow the transfers down. I compared the speeds to another Micro USB device I had and both gave the same speeds to and from the device with the same cable.
The addition of the keyring on these connectors is amazing! I’m hoping that on the next Choetech portable batter they will add a place for me to attach this keyring. Having it on my keys is great. The connector stayed put when I picked up my phone with plenty of weight on the keys (truck key, key fob, bottle opener, a couple of house keys, a couple loyalty cards, a Motorola keylink, and plenty of keyrings)! I can’t believe no one has thought of doing this yet, great job Choetech!
In closing, these are the Micro USB to USB-C adapters to purchase for sure. The click when inserting the micro cable as well as the USB C into the phone along with the keyring make these a no-brainer.
I received this product in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Choetech is looking for people to review the item listed here. I am not affiliated with Choetech other than reviewing for them. They are great people and make a great product.

Can I charge my Vernee Apollo Lite with a 3.1a charger?

Hello,
I've bought this little guy to charge my phone in my motorcycle, and it outputs 5V 3.1A:

Can I safely use it to charge my Vernee Apollo Lite?
While searching the matter I found two opinions:
A) The phone will only drain the necessary amount from the charger, thus the higher amperage doesn't matter, as long as the voltage is equal.
B) The phone will be "addicted" to the higher amperage and won't charge properly with the regular charger anymore.
Which one is true?
Thanks!

From my experience, when I use a fast charger (has 2.1 Amps compared to 1 Amp from regular chargers), on a phone that does not support fast charging, it makes no difference. Only the phones that can support fast charging will utilize the fast charging charger. So it would make no difference if you are using a higher amp charger. Option A is your answer.

Extend Your Battery Life with a Portable Charger [Oculus Quest 2]

After getting my Oculus Quest 2, one of the most obvious drawbacks was the battery life. If I wanted to play longer in between charge times, I needed to find a good solution. One thing you can do is plug your headset into the wall with a long cord, while you play. This works, but it restricts your movement and can come unplugged very easily. So here is the solution I came up with.
I started using a portable USB C charger to power my headset when it gets low. The charger can sit in my pocket while I continue to play. The first charger that I used only slowed the discharge time. It wasn't charging my headset while I was playing. This is because most portable chargers use a 5W output. The Oculus Quest 2 can take a 15W charge. So I upgraded to the RavPower 18W Power Bank. This product has enough power output to charge my headset while I keep playing.

I thought I'd share this info here, so other people can know what type of portable charger they need to get. Here is a link to the exact charger that I am using now. I can get two full charges out of this power bank, while gaming. This will extend the battery life of my Oculus Quest 2, to basically last all day. The charger has two ports [1x USB-A, 1x USB-C]. I use it with the same charging cable that the headset came with, which is the right length to fit into my pocket without being too long.
I'm sure other brands will work just as well. Just make sure that your power output is over 15W and it's small/light enough to fit into your pocket.
