The apps you love and use on Huawei phones without Google services - Huawei P40 Pro Questions & Answers

Hey What's up guys,
So following on from my banking segments i thought id cover off Popular apps next.
So some of the top apps i have successfully been able to install and run without side loading GMS. This again has been done via Phone Clone, Huawei App Gallery, Petal search which draws from APK stores.
Microsoft Office
WhatsApp and i was able to transfer my chat history
Facebook
TikTok
Instagram
Twitter
Messenger
Spotify
Netflix
Snapchat
Disney Life
CODM
And many more. A lot of people still think you cant get these apps or that its very difficult to do so, or that you have to sideload GMS. Hopefully this helps build a better understanding of what you can get and with ease.
Let me know what you guys have managed to install Without sideloading GMS and did you know about getting all these apps?

What is the point? The list will be huge. Are you going to maintain this huge list of thousands of software?
Do you have some sort of website to do this effectively .. or just a random list of software in a forum in no particular order?
what is some apps work 90% ok but have a minor glitch? will that be addressed in your website for this new database?

To add to this, check out what people are installing on amazon fire tablets as a workaround, you may find it useful!

Hi, i completely understand where you are coming from. I am only trying to share my experience and see what others have found. I'm new to forums so this may not be as well laid out as your use to but ill get better with time. If you have noticed any glitches with any of the above apps then it would be cool to know about your experience.

Thank you for this i will check it out. Have you fund any particular app store that's worked best? i have been testing a few.

meh ive got the p40 pro and ive been fine using it, googles not everything. I used google for email, browser, maps and downloading apps, didn't use google books didn't use google pay after using it and having my account hacked and multiple credit and store cards taken out!! I googled it and its more common than you think.)
I still use gmail but just use their email app, I used their browser at first but recently started using duck duck go, I use here we go maps as that's the 2nd best offline navigation next to google maps and downloading apps? Went straight to app gallery and downloaded petal search which gives me everything..
Everyone's different and if you need Google then get a phone with it on but im enjoying the freedom!

[APP] My apps banned from Play Store back online

Hi all,
I had a few apps on the Play Store some months ago, which got removed after Google decided to ban me from the Play Store for who knows what reason. Apparently the cause was the "sexy" nature of the apps, which still doesn't explain why my app got kicked out and so many apps that are much worse than mine still live there.
Well, anyway, I've decided to put them all back online on a website for users to download, so if you're interested in them feel free to download them and give me some feedback! All the apps have a brief descriptions and screenshots:
drfeelgoodsw . appspot . com (sorry, being a newbie no link allowed...)
They're all apps to quickly access galleries of well known sexy and gossip websites (Front Magazine, The Sun Page 3, Egotastic and so on), and they all allow you to mark those galleries as favourites, save them on your SD card, etc. Nothing fancy but I hope you'll enjoy them nevertheless! If you have any suggestion on how to improve them, or just know some other website you'd like a similar app to be made for, I'd love to hear it from you
They must have been deleted again because nothing comes up in a search for them

Sorry, I should have been clearer... by "back online" I actually meant they were available again on the web page I created for the purpose, not on the Play Store. I tried publishing them on Android PIT after they were removed from the Play Store, but that only lasted a few weeks, as apparently Android PIT only hosts apps that are also on the Play Store (quite silly of them, considering they're supposed to be an alternative market, but anyway...). I'm looking for other markets to publish the apps on, but until then the apps are available for download on the page I linked in my previous post. Those apps automatically look for updates using a JSON string on the same page, so updates should be easy to keep track of even without a Market in place.
No feedback? Either the apps are perfect the way they are, or they really suck!!

Also, I suspect that people are getting a bit wary of sideloading apks when they could be malware. That's unfortunately a level of trust you lost when you were banned from the play store.

Oh, I hadn't thought about that...
Well, if that can help, I can post a screenshot of the mail from Google describing their exact reason why I got banned, which had nothing to do with malicious behaviour in my app. That said, anyone can just monitor the traffic my app generates, and see that, apart from an update check at the beginning (a GET to retrieve a JSON file), the only connections are towards the website each app is wrapping. I would be quite dumb to post malicious apps on an expert den of Androiders like XDA Developers anyway ehehe
Anyway, if that can help I ca post the complete source code of one of the apps to let people check that everything's fine. The core of the apps is mostly the same (activities, sqlite database, image cache, httpclient+jsoup), apart from differences related to their structure (e.g., Page3 has much more activities and choices than GQ), so that should help understand I'm not hijacking anything. Of course, you could object there is no guarantee the code I'm posting is exactly the one used to generate the APKs, as we'd be back to the trust issue at the beginning...
Well, if there's any way I convince those in doubt that I'm in good faith just let me know. About the Play Store, unfortunately there's no way I can get back there. In the mail I received, I was told I was banned and that I could not open a new account to publish the apps again, so that's out of the question. Android PIT only accepts apps that already are on the store, so no go either. I tried other markets like Androlib and SlideMe, but both failed to send me the confirmation mails I needed to confirm the account, so I'm wondering if they're even a viable solution for developers right now. I've already discarded the Amazon App Store option, as there's an annual fee the likes of which only Apple could conceive. Anyone knows more alternatives to publish apps?

[Q] [Discussion] How do they know?

First off, I have never purchased any music, books or movies from the Google Play Store. Nor have I used the store to search for any of these media types. All the media I have on my phone has been taken from "back ups" I have on my computer and placed on phone through USB or Skydrive. I have some very obscure and varied musical, reading and movie tastes. I also don't use Google+ or any Google affiliated messaging, chat or blog services. So I found it very disturbing on my last visit to the Google Play Store, when I decided to check öut the "recommended for you section" and found quite a bit of recommendations that matched the content of my phone. It was uncany. I did some research and found that Google says it's recommendations were based on searches, geographic location and what my"friends" listened to. I am on vacation outside of my geographic location and I purchased my phone while on vacation. My previous phone was a Windows phone so they can't have gotten data from that source, could they? Is my private content being scanned or accessed? Google is hitting too close too the mark on this one. I go out of my way to keep my privacy. Something seems fishy. Anyone else notice this or am I being paranoid?

App packages
When you enter the Google Play Store on your device, the application packages that exist in your phone (regardless where you got them from) are being used for search results.
Thus by matching the app packages that exist in your device against those that also have the same package name installed in their devices, Google can tell what kind of apps these generalized group of people will download, and make suggestions from there.
But yes, you are being paranoid
The play store takes stock of what's on your phone so it knows what updates you need and to recommend things to you. It does collect other info, all of which you will find in the TOS you obviously didn't read before you created your Google account. I didn't read it either, but I also understand some info is collected for these reasons and to be able to target ads to your usage habits. It's the nature of the beast - connecting to the Internet in any way means you have given up some measure of privacy, whether you like it or not.
You're being paranoid.
My advice: If you want to live off the grid, owning a smartphone is not the best approach....

If you have an android smartphone and you are using Google Play, you need a gmail account for this, so, Google already has your "identity" and knows who is the owner of that smartphone. When you use google chrome and start a session on it, you are telling Google everything you do on the web, and even if you are not logged in on chrome, or use a different browser, but log into gmail account and use youtube or google for searching on internet Google knows what you look for on internet and what you like to watch. And if you use your phone during vacation outside of your geographic location, Google already knows where you like to go on vacations and you like to on free time, that probably is very related with all the targeted adds that you see on the internet while browsing.
In other words, no one is scanning your private content or accessing on it, YOU are giving all this kind of info to Google and they just use it, maybe for suggest Hotels on vacations or for anything they want because they own it.
My recommendation is take care of your privacy and don't be paranoid if they know what you tell them... :cyclops:

Mine was OK, the SIM card holder tip broke off but can still insert a SIM card. I have tried many different things. I used the Chinese app to download something called "Go" when I open the app, I see Royole and references to Play store. I still cannot get it to work. I tried to create a Royole account (no luck still).
I use my Huawei phone to convert the Chinese to English (camera/hivision). They have FAQs in the app, and it implies I needed to disable two factor authentication but it doesn't work still.
I hooked up the FlexPai to ADB/Logcat to see the debug messages and I see security exceptions. So I fear we may need to root (and this is outside of my expertise).
I use the web versions of google apps as a temp workaround (outlook for email). Some apps work some apps don't.

Hi, Ive got some google functuonality installed on my flexpai (google maps is ok, playstore working but no possibility to sign in)
I am looking to install the google account apk for pie. You should have to install manually some google apk and for pie!!!
com.google.android.gms_17.1.91_(100400-247666647)-17191037_minAPI28(arm64-v8a,armeabi-v7a)(nodpi)_apkmirror.com.apk

google-play-services-16-1-53-000300-242560017.apk
Hi looks promising.
In your list of 3 apks two of them are actually the same "app" just different versions
com.google.android.gms is the same as Google Play Services.
You need this one
com.google.android.gsf_9-4832352-28_minAPI28(nodpi)_apkmirror.com.apk
plus this version of Google maps
com.google.android.apps.maps_10.16.1-1016101040_minAPI21(arm64-v8a,armeabi-v7a,x86,x86_64)(nodpi)_apkmirror.com.apk
AND IT WORKS!!! great work.
I can't log in but maps works otherwise.
maybe we need to latest google account manager - looking into it.
thanks
I found an account manager for Android Pie but no luck.
I look at logs in ADB - and it seems there are permissions that are not granted
nable to get provider com.google.android.gsf.settings.GoogleSettingsProvider: java.lang.SecurityException: You need MANAGE_USERS permission to: get the profile parent
I tried to grant using ADB shell but cannot.
So in an area I don't have expertise on.
I see we can unlock our bootloader so potential for other ROMs and root to address these issues

Quick update,
Just installing this one APK
com.google.android.gms_17.1.91_(100400-247666647)-17191037_minAPI28(arm64-v8a,armeabi-v7a)(nodpi)_apkmirror.com.apk
then issue these two command from adb:
adb shell pm grant com.google.android.gms android.permission.INTERACT_ACROSS_USERS
adb shell pm grant com.google.android.gms android.permission.READ_LOGS
helps a lot.
Apps like flipboard, sirius etc now work (when they didn't before).
Apps not working for me still: pushover, textnow and the google apps (where I need to login).
thanks

Yes, I could load my Gmail and YouTube by signing in. I had intentions as well to use it as a daily device however I'm experiencing connectivity challenges with wifi and my data. Royole is supposed to be sending out an update soon to address some of the challenges we in North America are experiencing.

Yes it is unlikely one can use this as their main phone, but it's close.
Google apps (or any other app) that needs to login (locally on device) will not work.
For the Youtube (Version from the Amazon store), the login is cloud based (so it works).
One can use Chrome to login to Google photos, GMail, Drive, etc (as the login is Cloud based).
For an alternative to Google Maps, try MapQuest.
Interestingly the Microsoft Apps work really well (Launcher, Cortana, OneNote & other office apps).
For Apps like Flipboard use an email account (not Google account).
See my above post on the Google Services APK to get other apps working.
Here is why I cannot use as my Main Daily Driver. I depend on apps like Pushover (doesn't work at all), Paid Google Play Store apps (PocketCasts), Some Banking Apps (it detects the Flexpai as "non compliant'), Google Assistant (I really depend on that as a developer), Some Widgets (Currency), Android Wear (Watch while I haven't tested It depends on Play Services), Focals (Smart Glasses), Duo, TextNow, Feedly.
It is a good preview to what a Huawei Phone without Google Play Store/Services will be like : )
I use it as a second device (Foldable Tablet) and I find it quite usable.

Can you confirm you are able to login to GMAIL using the android app (or did you mean via a browser)?

Hi Guys,
Any news about the Google Services in Flexpai?

Google is not android, GMS Core App alternatives, Some suggestions please add :)

So having had the p40 pro and seen threads all over XDA about what are the alternatives i thought id share what i've found.
So for gmail, i've used the email app preinstalled (which does the same job)
google maps, I saw a post about here we go maps, so i've used that and it does exactly the same thing, i guess as the roads dont change and to be honest i found the speedometer element on it to be more accurate as I used my wifes s10 (as i got no other cellular GMS device) to compare GMS maps vs HMS maps and using the digital speedo in the car, so that was quite interesting.
google docs, I'm simply using what I've always used which is Microsoft office and for me I find it easier to use i guess its because its what I've always used.
Youtube, well for this i just added it as a short cut to my home screen, Even though its not an app i really use to be fair unless im on a tablet.
Playstore, Ive adjusted to appgallery and the petal search app which compliments it really well, yes you can use apkpure & aptoid etc however im just sticking to that.
I mean the misconception that android is google is crazy, I stepped away from the chains of IOS sometime ago for the reason I wanted freedom of apks, RIP showbox.
However if you've found alternatives to other google apps it could be handy, this is from what i use but for the time being ive not needed the use of any other apps as im still on lockdown in Wales.
let me know
Scott
Unfortunately lots of apps require google services. Some banking apps, some browser apps, etc. The problem is not limited to just chrome, maps, drive, youtube, etc. It is far broader and the user wouldn't know if he might have a problem unless he tried all apps that he needs without google services in order to find out which ones don't work.
From my point of view Microsoft has lots of google apps alternatives - onedrive, onenote, etc. Also YouTube which is critical for a lot of users can be used normally by installing YouTube Vanced.
I hope that some good and easy methods of installing google services show up or the Huawei ban is lifted.
There already many of these threads. .. bit hard for people to use when everything is just buried in hundreds of posts.

You are right, and for banking apps you can simply add the website to homescreen, also google maps is a PWA and runs great as a desktop shortcut! I did a lot of this with windows phone and had no issues whatsoever, google is not the be all and end all of mobile phones!

I would guess as its a bit of a hot topic considering the change from GMS to HMS? and with consumers like us trying to either learn or teach there will always be a tonne of posts?

You are right, and for banking apps you can simply add the website to homescreen, also google maps is a PWA and runs great as a desktop shortcut! I did a lot of this with windows phone and had no issues whatsoever, google is not the be all and end all of mobile phones!

Exactly, I've taken the mindset of 'there is always a way' and turns out 99% of the time there is!

Some sort of structured spreadsheet.. Maybe Wikipedia lol
But yea.. Probably a bit hard to coordinate and Huawei should really develop

However if you've found alternatives to other google apps it could be handy, this is from what i use but for the time being ive not needed the use of any other apps as im still on lockdown in Wales.
let me know
Scott

I've found to youtube. And I have my account connected there. So everything is synched. My p40 pro is without GMS. I only have youtube. And the best part is that it is premium and for free .
It is called vanced youtube....
I've come across it I believe on some XDA forum....
You lucky guys. I must go with gms on My p40 pro for now. Only because of one App, and thats My banking App from N26. In webpage i can't make money Transfers. The App is needed to Do this. I wrote to the N26 Support if they had Plans to offer the App in the App gallery, but they had Till now no Plans to Do that.
If anyone had a solution for this, i'm open for all.
Aurora store - an open source Google Play app that doesn't need GMS.
Microsoft Office - its far more usable than Google Docs
One Drive - works well especially if you have an office 365 subscription and it'll backup photos
There are a bunch of youtube apps on XDA that adblock and run in the background too....

Life before Google & After ;)

Hey everyone, I hope everyone reading this thread is safe & well.
So this week I thought I'd ask everyone how they are getting on with HMS over GMS with some additional details -
For myself I was moulded by Google Mobile Services it is every well made, streamlined and efficient for day to day use and tweaking myself to use Huawei Mobile Services has been the better end of okay but still some major tweaks needed such as -
Apps / Services need to be located in one pre loaded folder
Services need to be shouted about more
Mapping services aligned to apps - such as Uber It would be nice to see driver's ETA
In app purchasing
For me these are key devolvement's and hope Huawei is working on these for update in 2020, What are you missing from GMS to HMS and how has the transition been for you?
Look forward to your answers
one thing im missing, Barclays banking and that's it! I can cast to a smart TV, I can do youtube/spotify etc just need to be able to control the wife spending the joint account savings! #fact
Barclays Banking - I'm happy enough to use it via the browser for the time being, as it's an app I only use a few times a month but would be nice to see added!
YouTube via Browser just isn't a full time solution for me - discovering Vanced has been a saviour (it's now on my P30 Pro too)
Google Drive and Photos was one that I didn't think I used at all, but is one of those things upon using a HMS device you realise you do! (Drive for WhatsApp backup and Photos was a nice background back up I never thought about) - I have since swapped over to Huawei's cloud making use of the 50GB free for 1 year offer and I've been pleasantly surprised at how well made and easy it is to use - not something that can always be said about their in-house solutions if we're being honest.
Google Maps was never used as navigation for me but more for visualising routes via a browser search - which it still works via - Have always used Waze or in car Sat Nav.
Never been interested in NFC payments and assistants, but will be interest to give them a go once Celia? and Huawei Pay improve/go live!

Interesting read, my take on it is that services are already pre loaded in to a folder like music, video, themes, health which is cool. apps as we now know can be sourced via petal search but it would be good if that was preinstalled, which i believe is starting to happen. Uber is one to be looked at. but you do now have bolt which does them same thing and can be found in App store. Services have a fairly big exposure already. Its on FB, Insta, Tiktok, TV adds. what else do you feel they could be doing?
Hope you are having a good day.
For me the biggest thing I am missing is the starbucks app. I am guessing that it works via GMS mapping. But just after it for my reward cards.

Petal Search Find Apps is great hands down, I have used Bolt and it is great to have this app on board so early as Bolt is going to be the next best thing for Uber like services also having the big branded apps on board is great.
I think (probably is happening in the background) HMS should be bringing in app purchases, mapping system in line app usage for apps like Pokémon Go / Uber etc
It would also be great to see App Gallery on app commercials like how it says available on Google Play Store, Apple Store etc this gets the brand out in to the public domain a lot more.

I have GMS installed and suppressed all playstore notifications to avoid constant errors. II keep getting at random when I try to register the email and it checks Google " your device id is not registered" and some apps doesn't work as they can't find Google play services framework. But able to get netflix, YouTube vanced, Gmail (using huawei mail app) to work.

No I will still keep GMS as play store is still working and I'm able to access my paid apps. Guess I will live with this error till some better fix comes up.
