This phone's main issue in my opinion is the camera and I've found a GCAM port that seems stable enough to take some good pictures with this camera, before it used to look like an oil painting, but now, seems better in my eyes, look at the pictures below, the TCL Cam you can't make out the texture of the headphones cushions, the GCAM you can... Now just need a Mod for the CPU, maybe turn it into a Snapdragon 865 kidding, to be honest the CPU is fast enough for day to day use, I don't game on phones.

Thank you thank you thank you! Yes, the stock camera app takes some WEIRD looking photos! Got the latest version of GCam from your thread link, and after switching it out of the cool colour temp it had as a default setting for some reason, pictures look NORMAL, which is GREAT because I got this phone *for* the camera (macro lens specifically) - so I'd have been really pissed if I had to use one phone for macro pictures and one phone for all other pictures! Thanks!!

I swear there was a setting in there that had the word "cool" in it when I first set this up ... I can't find it for the life of me now though, so in trying to recreate my steps, I'm wondering if I maybe changed Auto White Balance in the quick settings menu from off to auto? Perhaps the thermometer made me think "Colour Temp"? That's the only thing I'm seeing that could possibly be it ... and doing a quick test, flipping it back to off, the pictures do look a lot 'cool'er, so I think that was it.
Thanks. I switched to the GCAM I linked and it doesn't seem to have the cool issue and let's me use the telephoto lens. I appreciate the quick answer.

Hrm, just gave this a try (and the ARCore download from that same site, which I've installed but haven't tested yet - NO reason we shouldn't have epic AR on this phone though with all these cameras!) and I couldn't get the colour balance right. It let me use the wide lens when I enabled that in the settings yeah, as well as 4K video (not sure the other one did that), but if the pictures look like crap, having the wide lens isn't terribly useful
I don't know if it is, or makes a difference, but the default Auto white balance advanced setting in the OP's linked GCam is Pixel 4 XL - on this other one it defaults to 3 and doesn't have a 4 setting. Other than that I can't see any huge differences except some of the things that are exposed (like the 4K video setting and additional lenses)
Edit: Actually I think the lighting has changed since I did the first test shots a couple hours ago, because I just flipped *back* to the OP's GCam and my wood table doesn't look as warm, but my neon red joycons in the background are popping just as much as they were this morning.
Any update on a better gcam port?

No more sharpen edges
After several tests i figureout that HTC apk.... don't take any better photo =) In my samples on HTC cam apk HDR was turned on... and on the stock one OFF.
SO... If you want less sharpened pictures in AUTO mode just turn on HDR. on your stock s7 cam-app =)
Hello to all!
I love S7 and his camera... but... over-sharpening is big prob. for auto mode.
I found in this thread HTC camera that has less sharpening than stock one.
App is rudimental no fancy working options but for point & shot is working like boss!
APK link
And here are examples.. check the edges of the buildings.
I would like to see your tests... my camera is ISOCELL.

Nice!
I tested for couple of days... and i can say that shared HTC camera gives better results even in stock PRO mode. (in term of sharpening edges etc)
For all users that find AUTO shots over-sharpened - just try this cam
Update 1st post...
dont experience this issue at all with the S7 flat sony sensor
Uhh, the HTC cam just took a darker photo so the halo around building edges was less obvious. Look at the other details. Sharpening is the same. Shoot Pro mode + RAW if you don't want any post-processing.
Turning on HDR is no solution for the over sharpening. It's a totally different kind of thing.
HDR can help in some situations (mostly those with dark and light in one frame), but on many situations I recommend not using HDR , especially indoors.
Also when you turn on HDR lots of people have this pinkspot problem so on the samsung sensor so HDR isn't that good.

is there another app for video , With less sharpened video ?
Yes, luckily there is - called "Cinema 4K". Unfortunately, it doesn't support 3840x2160 for "4K" in conjunction with the S7 but the rather obscure resolution of 3264x2448 instead.
Biggest advance is the possibility to completely turn off any sharpening or noise reduction so one gets a way more "filmic" result.
If you want very nice and sharp photos than you have to install "Bacon Camera" for your Samsung. We hope that someone can do a mod like Google Pixel Quality.
What does bacon camera do that is better than stock? Stock app is good all around but low lighting, it tends to tint red
The photos are sharper and have less noise. The tint problem will be fixed with an update I think
The only reason Gcam is better than Samsung's is because Google uses machine learning and it's massive database for that, I don't think this camera has these at its disposal.
Edit: This app doesn't support camera2 API, meaning you actually have very little control of what the hardware can do and all changes are software edited.
You can also try Footej Camera
Samsung pro mode is better than most of the copy cat apps in the play store. The only thing that works better is the gcam mod for front facing selfie portraits because of the machine learning blur.
The stock app, and the gcam, are the only camera apps you need.
But gcam is Not Working at this moment for s9+

I really want the Drama Photo effect from my Galaxy S4. Any idea where I can find this or an app that is like it. This effect will take 4 to 7 shots of a moving subject, and then stitch it together to show the movement of someone. thanks
I don't know any app that give you this. But for me personally I tried yesterday some versions of the gcam mod. Only one version is working a little bit. But picture quality is amazing. I hope someone do a full working mod for our dual camera than you have a Google Pixel camera with Samsung hardware.

It does, but most company besides Google have white balance issue.
Gcam doesnt do low light from what I see. Stock does very well in low light
Is really google camera that good compared to stock samsung camera?
Low-light photo quality sorta depends on the situation. If taking photos outside in low lighting, if you can keep your hands PERFECTLY still, the results can look better than the Pixel 2, but if we're talking consistency, I'd choose the Pixel 9 times out of 10. If taking photos inside in low lighting, especially when the subject is people or food, the quality comes out super soft. Some people like it, but it looks terrible to me. In these situations, I'd choose the Pixel 2 every single time, as it's consistent.
@jassu what app do you mean?
https://photos.app.goo.gl/qkLhkyYA5WBW65UY9'
20:9 with stock
16:9 with Gcam
I couldn´t believe my eyes when I got indoors and was about to make a little youtube video for night shot comparison. I couldn´t make the video as some of the nightscape pictures looked awful, grainy and not at all like the preview.
Since I can´t choose 16:9 with stock cam I had to go with 4:3 or fullscreen ... and I never take 4:3 shots. Maybe some settings within the camera options?
The problem is OnePlus doesn't have the resources to develop good image processing.
This camera is very lovable until switch to nightscape. Hopefully you didn't take picture to someone or would've seen a cartoon of that person. Skip nightscape setting until Oneplus hire a decent camera developer. Meanwhile attach to the regular photo mode that takes great pictures.

Pictures at night if there is a little artificial light actually work out better for me with just the normal camera, no nightscape. Gcam does do a better job though since it actually reduces glare on stuff like street lamps, the stock cam on normal doesn´t do that.
They should just work on an entirely new software approach, what they have just isn´t working and I don´t think updates are going to do much. It´s just more or less of the same.

Spot on.
Sent from my GM1913 using Tapatalk
I read a thread on the OnePlus forums about Nightscape.
It seems that the timing of the capture complete message is off and the camera team is aware of it and making adjustments.
I tried it myself last night and on the first shot I stayed still for a little bit longer after the message came up. Second shot as soon as the message came up I moved the phone away like I was done taking the picture.
You can see the difference in quality between the two.
hi guys, i would like to know if there is an apk of the camera that we can install on our pixel 4a where Is possible disable totally hdr. I find that the photos of 4a are too overprocessed. For example, the photos of the 2xl were more natural, less pushed. Can a 2xl apk for example, be installed on 4a? If yes, can you pass me It?
I'm Sorry for my english.

I'm not sure if you want a variant of the Google Camera.
If not, then did you already try the completely open source OpenCamera?
Thanks for the reply.
I don' t want to replace the stock camera present in the 4a, I would like an apk version of the very first pixels 2 or 2xl. But I don't know if it would work and I don't know which version to look for.
Open camera I tried it, but it doesn't seem to work very well. Also, if I remember correctly, the final photo was quite small in resolution.

The resolution can be changed in
Code:
Settings > Photo Settings > Camera Resolution
There I can set the full resolution of 4032 x 3024 on my Pixel 4a.
Maybe it also helps enabling the Camera2 API in
Code:
Settings > Camera API > Camera2 API
Ok I try.
In the meantime I hope someone knows something about the apk
Hello!! yes go tried to set open camera as recommended. Yes, there has been improvement. Also, I must say that I was expecting something more. I am not entirely satisfied. I think the software processing on this 4a is just too invasive. I see that under certain conditions it flattens all colors. And in this I don't recognize the Pixel style that has taught everyone else. But surely Open Camera helps. I would like to post a photo taken with the stock camera and the same after a slight post production, in which I simply gave more life to the colors. I don't know how the stock camera could have flattened the whole scene.
I'm so Sorry for my english. If you don't understand, please advise me.
As you can see, the first photo is taken with the stock camera. The second was post produced with snapseed. I mainly worked on colors. I took the same photo with Htc U11 always with stock camera. Unfortunately I don't have my phone with me, but I assure you that with htc the image was much more similar to the post produced photo. I am not satisfied with the stock result of the 4th. But in your opinion is such a picture taken by a pixel normal? For me no.

Because when you talked about "HDR" and "overprocessed" in the beginning, I through that you consider the HDR photos as too vivid/saturated/colorful. This confused me a bit, as the opposite is the case in my opinion.

If you consider as normal, what the stock camera on your Pixel 4a behaves like compared to other Pixel 4a phones, I would guess that it can be considered as normal. This is what images taken with the stock camera typically look like also on my phone.
If you consider it as not normal compared to the perceived colors in real life, then yes they look less saturated. On the other hand the post-processed image looks a bit over-saturated. But who am I to judge as I haven't seen the scenery with my own eyes
Yes, I meant that compared to reality, the image of the 4a came out very flat. Without saruration. I don't like high saturation, but these images are really far from reality. It is true that post production is very saturated, but I did it to highlight the problem.
Anyway, I installed camera px 8.1 version 1. HDR is deselectable, but it doesn't change much compared to the stock camera. Is there a different version or a version of the 2xl that can also work on the 4a?
Coming from pixel pro 6. Love the camera, hate the size of phone. Know I'm giving up some great features by going smaller but what are you early owners seeing with the camera? Anyone planning on finding a gcam ported to it? Heard someone ported google photos also so magic eraser would work.
Thoughts please why I impatiently wait on my phone to arrive.
Good enough. Definitely better than than my Flip 3
The 3 seemed to lack detail and colour for me.
I've been searching xda for the gphotos port with magic eraser, but nothing is coming up for non pixel devices... Let me know if you know where it is plz!

I took some Flip 4 pics today to see how it goes, the color rendering seems ok, decent photos in good light conditions. No overkill, just point & shoot camera - things we were expecting from this phone.
The camera on this phone is definitely no Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro; however, I think that should be a given when upgrading. I installed The Greatest GCam port and was impressed. The issue with the ports that I have found is that they don't mimic the new camera software on the Pixels. The one that was closest did something weird with my camera lens and made everything spherical looking.
Been using pixel since pixel 1, the camera is not as good as pixel's, even compared to a pixel 3 (2018).
The picture took by Samsung is more colorful than pixel, more colorful than real.
And the picture took at night is worse than pixel. Pixel's algorithm (night sight) is absolutely needed.
Is there any working G Cam port? Thank you.
Haven't found a gcam port that doesn't crash yet, but Adobe is working on a camera app that is suppose to have similar AI to Pixel, along with some other great stuff. Don't know when it will be released though
The camera is certainly a step up from last year's device but not quite flagship grade.
It excels in well-lit areas absent of any fast moving objects.
A working GCAM port might convince to me to reconsider it as a daily driver (as I literally have no other qualms with the device).

Tried the BSG camera port. The good news is that everything seems to work. The bad news is that I took a number of test comparison shots with the Samsung camera (both lenses, night mode, portrait mode). The Samsung photos were clearly superior each time. If nothing else, makes me feel good about the camera built into the phone.

Can you take the selfie using the front camera? I tried G Cam from all mods and non of them has a working front camera. You can preview from the front camera, but you can't save the image.
As for the "superior", it's just personal tastes. Many people like the raw and real feeling of the G cam. Samsung's camera is too "vivid", the sky is bluer and the trees are more green, FAKE. And often lost the details because of the color management. G Cam, just captures the real world most of time.

Sorry, I've already deleted G Cam, so I can't test the selfie cam. Didn't think to try it.
Came from S22U, so my experienceis not applicablefor everyone.
For sure, the camera is not like in that phone, especially I'm missing the telephoto one. Night shots are more messy and such.
On the other hand though, it's not that bad at all. Night shots are doing what it supposed to do, day photos are great.
In my mind, I can say that the cameras on Flip 4 gets "Decent +" mark
