Howdy all,
I'll try to keep things brief but informative.
Yesterday I got the unlock bin for my T-Mobile Oneplus 7 Pro. I unlocked it, flashed LineageOS (latest 17.1), Magisk (19.04 but then updated to latest after install), DM-Verity, and TWRP (unified Q version).
I have installed Nethunter, F-Droid, and some other basic apps.
I just got a new SIM Card from T-Mobile and activated it last night, however it shows the same as the empty SIM slot (which my phone doesn't have a physical second slot) and on the lock screen at the top left rotates between saying: "No SIM card" "No SIM card - T-Mobile" "No SIM card - No service". In the phone the top right does not show any bars, x'ed out or otherwise, however one time after taking it out, googling, then putting it back in it sis appear x'ed out until reboot.
I cannot send texts as it says no preferred SIM card selected, and I cannot make calls due to a lack of service; however, I can receive texts and calls and even answer calls and speak to the calling party just fine.
I was getting nothing, then I saw where someone received a text and it fixed it for them, so I texted myself, got a backlog of texts, but nothing else came of that.
I have no idea what to do from here and only vauge idea of why it may be like this but no understanding of it.
I found this reddit post seeming to detail the issue, but I do not know if it applies to me (presumably does) and I do not understand any of the information in the post, nor do I know what to do with this information:
reddit.com/r /oneplus /comments /gb5jlk /factory_reset_no_sim_card_detected_oneplus_7_pro /
(sorry for the spaces, can't post outside links until after I've posted 10 posts)
and with that I'm all out of idea and knowledge. My background is in Offensive Security, but I know very little about SIM Cards and smart phones so all help is greatly appreciated!

I didn't do it so I'm going to assume it is not. I've only unlocked the bootloader (obviously). How would I go about unlocking the SIM?
Also, the original carrier was T-Mobile and the SIM is also T-Mobile, I assumed this would be ok but is there an issue since I didn't unlock it yet I installed custom stuffs - or what would be causing an issue by not unlocking it? (just trying to learn more )

How did you root?
Did you grab a patched boot image or did you boot with the TWRP image and install Magisk yourself?
Grabbing the wrong image is the number one thing that causes WiFi and SIM issues.

"REBOOT TWRP
FORMAT DATA (If you are encryted) your internal memory will be lost!!!
REBOOT TWRP
WIPE DATA & CACHE
Flash Rom
Flash TWRP Installer
REBOOT TWRP
WIPE DATA & CACHE
Flash Rom again
Flash TWRP again
REBOOT TWRP
Flash Magisk 19.4!!!! <----This version
Flash DM Verity zip file <--- Always last file before system reboot
REBOOT SYSTEM AND ENJOY"
Gotta unlock for custom ROMs. Flash back to TMobile firmware do a sim unlock, then you can flash back.

I got the T-Mobile stock everything back and everything locked back down, but my SIM card is showing now service now - the same no sim message as was on LineageOS, not even receiving texts now.
I'll re-seat and mess with it when I get some more time.

Also, I went to the unlock app and it says it's fully unlocked already and can be used with any carrier...
If you didn't use the msm tool to get you back to the T-Mobile firmware, then you probably aren't on T-Mobile firmware. I had the same issue trying to get lineage to work, and was able to get back to stock and have data.
Since you probably don't have the bootloader unlock code, you need to convert to international firmware, and fully update to at least 10.3.2 before you flash lineage. If you don't, you won't have service.

I did use the MSM tool, it's locked, has the T-Mobile boot animation and everything.
I do have the unlock file & code, I had to wait a week to get it.

This is an unlocked T-Mobile G5, but why have a special ROM for unlocked phone? I wonder if I flash other ROMs, I could lose the unlock. Anyone have any problem rooting and install twrp?
Conclusion after a month long discussion:
G5 with H83020i_un ROM is NOT factory unlock. Upgrading or downgrading will result in SIM lock to T-Mobile, period.
Once locked, it can only be unlocked by T-Mobile customers via T-Mobile unlocked app. Some has to go thru T-Mobile customer service and request SIM unlock by adding IMEI to their database.
I bought 6 (New to New other) unlocked H830 and 2 has the hacked ROM H83020i_un and 4 were completely locked to T-Mobile. Yes, those stupid sellers on ebay just keep sending lock phones as unlocked phone! Good luck getting a unlocked one.
No, you cannot install TWRP or root this version.
I ended up returning mine.
You shouldn't lose the unlock by flashing another ROM.
A ROM isn't just about 'locked or unlocked'. The ROM is the operating system. While it will still be Android no matter what you do, different ROMs are modified differently to provide additional features, or more control over the settings or just a slightly different user interface.
This has NOTHING to do with the phone being unlocked for use on any GSM network.
For example some people want to be able to control the CPU processor speed on the phone more. Some ROM's give you that control built into the settings and use customer kernels that allow the CPU to run faster than it does running stock. Other people just like a more simple UI that you get on base Android ROM's (rather than some of the overlays LG puts on)

I don't know when people will understand that it has nothing to do with sim unlock. I have T-Mobile unlocked sim lg g5 and flashed roms, custom and stock both several times and never had any problem with sim lock stuffs. Just install twrp, root, flash custom rom, there will never hurt anything in your phone.

It seems that this is not a regular unlock. When I open the T-Mobile app, it says the phone is still locked, but it works anyway.

Did you confirm that by trying the phone with a non T Mobile SIM on a different network? Or did you just let the T Mobile unlocker app tell you it's still locked?
The app isn't the most reliable thing in the world. It's known to say it's not unlocked when it is or that it can't be unlocked when it already is. Etc etc...
Unlocking it manually (through codes, ADB, root, etc....) messes with the unlocker app. But the unlock itself should still be valid.

Maybe it is something to the specific phones people are getting from the ebay seller. They are being sold as new yet are not factory sealed and missing the Tmo sim card. People are claiming Android pay doesn't work and the phone isn't rooted. A new out of the box phone shouldn't have that issue. So something isn't necessarily kosher.
Guys, I have the same version (H83020i_un) and it has April security update and T-Mobile has different version #s on their website. I have checked for update, but nothing came up. So I can't get T-Mobile updates?
The software version H83020i_un is apparently not an official ROM released by T Mobile or LG.
There is a lot of speculation on Slickdeals (a website for coupons and stuff where this eBay deal has been discussed quite a bit) that the unlock was done by flashing a modified ROM. If so that would explain why flashing a new ROM loses the unlock.
Additionally people are saying that Android Pay doesn't work on this phone with that software update, presumably because it's not official firmware. I've never used Android Pay so I have no idea if it works or not.
All in all if you have the H83020i_un software and bought the phone 'new' I think you got conned. It's not new and that seems to be unofficial software.
I spent a lot of time, with help from @autoprime, trying to figure out where the unlock is stored. I was able to dump the partitions from 20i_un using the method here. After I downgraded to 20A and flashed TWRP, I flashed back all the 20i_un partitions (besides recovery, cache, and userdata), and it still wasn't unlocked. So I'm baffled as to how the unlock works.

I see. It will be used as a second device, so it is fine. I flashed the phone with stock T-Mobile H83020a, then got few OTA updates. Now my phone has H83020i, but T-Mobile's page(below) shows an "f" version as the latest. So is the H83020i, the latest update or not? Also would be good if anyone with real T-Mobile unit could chime in.

Review the Guides Forum. SIM unlock is
being done by a TMO rep, did mine, took 2 days to happen. There is also a thread regarding switching phone to international software, at which point you can unlock without needing token from OnePlus.
Yes ....u just need to get sim unlocked otherwise if u go to flash intl version stock rom, oem unlocking will be greyed out still.....ask me how i know so you first get sim unlocked then go into dev options and tick "oem unlocking" NOW if u want to stay on tmobiles fw and unlock bootloader u have to get the bootloader token from one plus takes 7 days.... alternatively u could do what i did and instead of waiting now u can flash to international rom. Update to 9.5.8 then unlock bootloader without needing token (because device thinks it is overseas variant) then you are good to go to install TWRP and magisk

Do what this guys says, I did all that and I'm SO happy I did. Plus TMOs fw didn't have the fanatic gaming mode just gaming mode which is totally freaking awesome. One thing I didn't do was install TWRP, I just did magisk, did I screw up by not installing twrp?

Sidenote: Fnatic gaming mode is now enabled on the T-Mobile firmware (9.5.8).
I just talked to t-mobile chat, they were able to do it for me in less in 5 min. I said that I was going out of the country for a couple months(which is true), there was no other questions asked and my phone is unlocked now. One payments btw.
Hey guys! Thanks for the info, planning to do this once I get my code but out of curiosity, what are the main differences between the international and T-Mobile Roms? Pros and cons? Thanks in advance!

No that will just freeze apps or backup apps such as system apps or downloaded apps.....u would need twrp. .... I mean if your rooted You should definitely have a backup because obviously you are going to tinker with things and if something goes wrong and you go in to a bootloop what are you going to do ?you would have to start all over with the MSM tool versus just booting into TWRP and restoring your backup..... I'll give you one instance I was messing with the "mixer_paths_tavil.xml" files in my phone to make both top and bottom speaker louder . And if I did something wrong, like didn't give it to correct permissions or simply screwed something up in the file it would have bootlooped ..... But I would be fine because I have a backup so I would just reboot recovery and restore my backup in twrp. So save yourself the headache and always make a backup of your rom that your on in future :good:

First back all of your data up, if you do it with Google or OnePlus switch however you do it back your stuff up. because switching over to international will wipe the device so will unlocking bootloader....now flash international ROM.... login what's your Google account.. then go to settings, build number tap seven or eight times then you will have developer options go in and enable USB debugging. Make sure oem unlocking is also on..... go to system update and check for 9.5.8 .. (so you can beyond latest update rooted) install 9.5.8 .....Now you can unlock your bootloader with the fastboot command, you can find guides in the forum....after bootloader is unlocked it will wipe everything......this time you can log back in and restore all of your settings on the ROM boots up you will be on 9.5.8 and now the bootloader is unlocked. also go to dev options again and tick usb debugging and enable advanced reboot ...From this step what I did was grab the latest TWRP image and TWRP installer I also grabbed the latest magisk. I downloaded twrp installer right from phone, magisk apk, and magisk zip. This is a big deal because these files need to be on your phone in internal storage (i left them in downloads) so now that the files or on your phone that you need to flash from twrp....u can install twrp img now (use guides on forum) flash twrp img, root etc.

Hello big bro, did you later use this method to SIM unlock
Kindly help please
Has anyone been able to get any information? I checked the Oneplus site and the tmobile phone has an unlock .bin page but no mention of sprint. Now, I know Sprint has merged with Tmobile so im not sure if this changes things..
Any thoughts/information?
I'm not 100% sure on this as I haven't confirmed it however, I did get the OnePlus 8 5g at their discounted deal due to the merger and can say without a doubt that it is a T-Mobile phone with T-Mobile branding on the box and in the phone the only thing that it is currently using is a Sprint SIM card. Therefore I would assume one of the many methods that are listed over on the T-Mobile side should work I will check into it tonight and get back to you with my findings. I can also say that all of my roaming issues that I was having at my house with my OnePlus 7 pro 5G have been corrected and resolved with just this phone alone. No need for an airrave or any other device to get internet at home. I'm not sure if you live in a 5-g city or not however they have not officially activated it where I live it just recently came on line a day or two ago and that is through T-Mobile's Network only and I'm actually able to pick that up now to. (Just not at home )
Yeah same phone. If you go into the unlock screen it even says T-Mobile even with a Sprint sim in the phone.

Sprint is owned by T-Moblie now, so it makes sense.

Yeah noticed that. For my OnePlus 8 on the lock screen it says Sprint next to the camera. Could there be different models? I got mine a few days after they started the early upgrade last month.

They are the same phone but you need a Sprint sim if you're using Sprint for your carrier. There is an 8 Pro but it's not available through any carrier in the US. You need to buy it from OP or Amazon. I don't think it'll work on Sprint as it's not an approved device. It will work on t-mobile This will all change after August when they begin merging customers.
Edit: The OP8 is the exact same phone, IN2017, on both networks.

I am wondering the same. Can I root this device? I just got this phone, mine says Sprint. IN2017. I just want root and start trying different things? Anyone get this rooted yet? Ty

Yes. I am fully rooted, xXx rom and smurf kernel
You need to network unlock (sim unlock) permanent in order to make available the toggle for OEM Unlocking in settings.
Once sim unlocked, enable oem unlocking in settings and get the unlock from phone and then from OnePlus.
After unlock_code.bin is provided from OnePlus you need to flash that via fastboot. This will wipe.
Then download latest stable twrp from mauricio (thread in xda OnePlus forums)
Only BOOT twrp. Backup boot partition. Install magisk manager app once phone fully reboots.
Patch boot.img backup you made using magisk manager app.
This creates the file "patched_magisk.img"
Move that to ADB folder.
Test patched boot by <fastboot boot patched_magisk.img>
If successful, open magisk manager and press Install Directly.
You will be rooted.

this is the first post in probably 5 years i hit the Thanks button for
can you please confirm if this is supposed to be the method for all carriers, or specific to certain region models, or excluding certain carriers?
i'm emerging from a 1000 year slumber after becoming satisfied with a previous phone, and finding it ridiculously difficult to find a new haven for rooted phones lol
Once you are rooted and unlocked, I'd suggest switching to the Global rom for future proofing the device.
I just did this last night and it was fairly painless.
There's a thread on switching to global. In that thread there is a reply to my post. That reply is a very concise guide to flashing over to global and updating to A11. Regaining root is also simple. Use Magisk Canary and download the stock boot image for global. Patch that stock boot using Magisk Canary.
Reboot to fastboot and flash patched_magisk.img to boot_a AND boot_b
Reboot.
Enjoy root and Magisk.
I also recommend flashing the xXx Magisk rom. Will re-enable VoWiFi and VoLTE for global rom!

Does the global ROM have T-mobile"s 5g enabled? I am on sprint with the T-Mobile oneplus 8 5g. I'm currently awaiting my bootloader unlock bin file (I applied last week).
Thanks for any assistance.

Yes. I'm on exact same thing as you.
5g works great after A11 update!
I just got an IN2017 model now and still trying to apply for a SIM unlock, do I need any services enabled for that process? Or can I disable/wipe out any crappy bloatware that my system has, and if so then what's safe to uninstall from sprint?

I"d leave it all for now. Once you unlock, i'd recommend switching to global rom anyway. It receives updates faster and modem is better than tmo. even without standalone 5g.
And when you do that, you'll eliminate most of the bloat.
Sorry for making another thread so soon, but I've got new issues now. TL;DR, I'm just trying to get my Moto G7 Power to detect my sim card at *all* anymore. I've been told that installing an OTA will make the phone detect the sim card again, but... I can't re-lock my bootloader.
I've spent pretty much all day looking for ways to re-lock it, but not a single one has worked. I always get the same "Still waiting for signed boot.img" message, even when I try fixes that worked for others. At this point, I give up on trying to re-lock. I just rooted using a guide here and connected to WiFi.
The next best thing would be for me to find another way to install OTAs. I've heard Magisk used to be able to hide your bootloader status and let you do that, but can't anymore, so...
1. Is there a way for me to install official android updates manually? If so, how?
2. If there is, *where* do I find the updates?

Retus one u need to flash do u have the bat file? Try flashing the modem non -hlos.bin in fastboot mode
You can install OTAs with unlocked bootloader, but you'll need to unroot your device first
Sorry for being 2 weeks late, but you look like you're in the exact same position I once was. Flashing an official update for my channel, available at https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/ocean/official/ was what solved it for me, for whatever reason. (my SIM also wasn't recognized at all, nor did I have any IMEIs outside of bootloader. Also, the option to enable OEM unlocking never became available to me, despite instantly being available when I solved it)
We're technically able to install OTAs with unlocked bootloaders? But for some reason mine throws up an error at step 3/6 every time, so I'm dependant on Lolinet to install them.
On relocking bootloader, you had to re-flash boot.img, run the command 3 times, re-flash and run the command again or something, I was also going to try that on one of my threads, but since I couldn't enable OEM unlocking.

Every OTA zip first verifies your entire system by checksums. Is there any modified partition the verifier fails and the update process ends with an error.

Changed the download link to GDrive.
Thank you
is there a steps on how to do this? first time looking at this msm tool.
will this work for software version 11.2.5.5LE53CB
Your current version does not matter. This will flash phone to point that it was when it came out of the box. then you can start over.
Do i lose unlock after convercion
How do you back up the T-Mo modems without going thru the T-Mo bootloader token unlock? I want to try going back to the T-Mo modems to see if they resolve the issues, and then back them up when to reflash when I go back to the EU load.
Thanks!

I'm not talking about flashing. Just backing up.
I was hoping to get temporary root with a Maoism boot image, back up the modems, and then convert back to European

No dice. Won't boot to another image unless it's unlocked.
Waiting for the T-Mo token.
avid_droid said:
Yep. Any critical partition flashing has to be unlocked. There is no other way around it. I've bricked my 9,the one before this one,by flashing the wrong modem on it. Tried MSM and it locked it and I couldn't do anything else to it,meaning flashing anything through bootloader or fastbootd.

Well, I guess it ended up not mattering much in the end. At least for what I was trying to do.
I'm finding T-Mo's service to just be complete crap, and I've determined it's not the phone. I moved 8 lines over from AT&T. Half were BYOD (all unlocked AT&T Samsung devices, and my son's unlocked OP9), and the other half were Samsung and OP phones bought from T-Mo. Everyone's experiencing bad call quality and coverage issues. Both my family and in-laws live within a mile from known T-Mo towers where we live. I live in a major metro area, my in-laws in a rural area. My parents live in a medium sized city. It's gotten unbearable, and at times, my wife and I have had to resort to texting due to the call quality just being so bad. Cutting out, garbled, etc.
In-laws also have T-Mo's home internet and are having issues with that.
I don't get it despite everything good I've read about T-Mo. None of us had these issues with AT&T.
I'm going to try to work it out with T-Mo, but at least for the time being, I'll just go back to the European ROM. There's no difference in the call quality anyway, and at least there I have root again.
If i flash the T-mo firmware to a global model, will I be unable to unlock the bootloader simply with the adb command, or will I have to go through all the hoops as if I bought the phone directly from t-mobile?

I'm gonna use the T-Mobile sim card on a global version of the phone. So theoretically the phone would already have been sim unlocked out of the box. What I'm asking is, if i choose to use the T-Mobile msm on the unlocked global model, will it carrier lock me in? If not that means all i have to do is go to developer options and use the unlock command, right?

No that won't happen to you. You should still be SIM unlocked as flashing software doesn't deal with SIM Locking but it May Lock the Bootloader that I am not Sure of

Who's currently doing sim unlocking? I'll gladly donate. I've unlocked my bootloader, flashed Magisk and have root access but I'm still sim locked to TMobile.
