modern OS on old Symbian phones? - General Questions and Answers

For the past days this idea has been in my mind and I have yet to find good awnsers.
I have an old Nokia E71 and I was wondering if it were possible to run another operating system than stock. I know that Android would probably be way to demanding for this kind of device but something like Kai OS or even just some flavor of mobile Linux.
The device is still very nice to use and would be a solid backup phone or even a daily with all the essentials when you dont want to be on social media every five minutes.
It has WLAN, Bluetooth, GPS, can do internet calls and so on. So at least spec wise it sould be a great feature phone if only there wasnt that old OS with a ton of stuff that just doesn't work no more because the servers shut down years ago.
If anyone has at least some idea of thinkering with these devices and what the possibilities are softwarewise please share your knowledge.

The (LEO) HD2 is making want to go back to windows

Since the G1 and now the mytouch both of which I flashed the Hero rom on, I just found my perfect business phone and this one could be a true Iphone killer and it has windows. I have not used a windows based phone since the dash and now the HD2 is making want to try it again. I live off outlook so that a plus but playing with the touchpro 2 I dont like some items, but like the Hero rich widgets, have you guys heard of anything?
Have you tried Androkidd 0.8, I installed it on my Pro2 yesterday and it seems good.

Cool, another Leo thread!
Since I posted this has there been any development on getting andriod on the HD2? Now that the Evo has come out I am hoping the process has been helped?

The developers have finally overcome the segfaults which previously prevented the Linux kernel from booting fully, meaning that Linux can boot fully, and Android is possible. However, the touch screen doesn't have any Linux drivers, meaning that until someone develops a touch screen driver from scratch, that Android (or any other Linux userland) is unusable without a USB keyboard/mouse plugged in .
The EVO 4G seems similar to the HD2, and it is reasonable to think that it may help in development of Android for the HD2, but it's actually quite the opposite. The hardware used in the HD2 is much different than that in the EVO. Besides the common appearance, the two devices are completely independent of one another, and the developers are mostly on their own. Just a small word of advice: don't ever buy a phone because of features that have yet to be developed, as there is absolutely no guarantee that Android/Linux will ever work fully on the HD2.
Leo is a great device, and it´s not outdated as it has the same or even more power than some newer devices.
WM is doing well on it because it´s fast processor
I agree withthe above poster. I think HD2 and WM have years left. Right now its the only phone I can do everything I want with, except HULU, which I firmly beleive will come. Heres what Android or iOS4 or WP7 will have to do out of the box for me to give up WM6.5
1. Play nice with my hava box for live TV.
2. Emulate PS1 game flawlessly
3. Play the PS1 games with a wireless PS3 controller.
4. Play any kind of video in existance thats under 2GB in file size with no frame dropping or quality loss.
5. Word, and Excel
6. a FTP program
7. Cut, copy, paste, and open with...
8. Streaming radio and play, OGG's, AAC, and other off brand codecs
These are my main concerns when I hear about WP7 coming. I fear we may loose all the killer software that has been build the last 5 years. Hopefully WP7 will have a compatability mode. LOL

Because we are the minority. those lovely features you speak of wont be present in most phone os going forward. Apple has shown that dumb down super simple phones are the way to go. btw I dont mean dumb down in the sense that they suck. What I mean is, we as a community are use to having free reign on what we do with our phones. The average user will do more harm than good with these features. With great power comes great responsiblity.
I like android! I havent seen a single thing that it cant do. Infact because of people like cyanogen its grown at record breaking speeds to be come a contender.
One of the best things about android is I have been able to install albeit modified versions of android on my g1 and my friends droid.
Now hes currently running froyo before motorola even has a chance to update it.
Thanks for the posts....I am using my Gen 1 Mytouch and while I like it a lot, its starting to be to slow for me.
I think the reason why I won't to windows is that I like the Andriod market a lot, being able to get a program , etc
But I am a windows guy on my laptop running outlook, office, etc and I am thinking it would be better for my business to switch to WM?
Maybe I need to research the market to see what I can get
Come on in the waters fine! With the snapdragon wimo 6.5 really pops. Its equal to or greater then ios4 or android. Once you get cookiemonsters app up, everyone at your work will be jelous of your phone. From comparing my multiple wimo phones with friend iphones and droid phones I can easily say once my rom is selected and phone is tweaked its actually much more stable then the other phones.

questions abt android on htc diamond2.

Hi all,
I read through a few sites and the forum to research about my phone and i am looking to make it not so laggy/sluggish.
I am from Australia and is on Telstra network and my HTC Diamond2 is very sluggish and so laggy, it can barely function. Chance upon android articles and reading about rave reviews about how Android performs faster than Windows Mobile 6.5.
I have ZERO computer programming technical abilities. Just a chemist looking to fix her phone. So, this may sounds like requesting baby sitting service, but if anybody is kind enough, please direct me to the builds that are stable with Diamond2.
Google maps, text msging and bluetooth (which at the moment does not work) are very important functions to me, so I am looking for a build that have functions similar to these working well.
thanks so much in advance.
check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509493
there is currently no fully working android build on the TD2 as there are problems with the drivers, android is not a complete replacement for windows mobile tho as you need to boot android from the win mob enviroment, plus as a owner of a android and win mob device i prefer windows over android any day of the week, maybe you should try some system optimisation software like sk tools, pocket mechanic or tweeks 2k2 as they can all improve system stability also try a cooked rom from one of the great TD2 cooks here on xda as alot of them out perform the stock HTC roms
Thank you so much.
Yes, i am just looking to really optimise my phone as I am pretty much stuck with this phone unless I can afford a new handset straight out.
Again, thank you for the link. I have no great computing abilities but I like to DIY. Will definitely look around more.
Thanks so much again.
you're really asking a question that will result in an answer that you just won't like. Its basically not feasible to have android on your phone, and if it ever were to be somewhat available, it would not be stable and it would require significant tinkering and knowledge to have a half-ass working android Diamond2.
your phone is nice...there's definitely a way for you to sell it off locally and purchase an android phone.

A few issues regarding lag, text message +Sd card and apps

Hey is it just me or is the FUZE just slow and lags all the time? i flashed the rom and put in the ENERGY ROM but it's still slow sometimes, especially when I text but even in general functions.
Does the internal memory have anything to do with speed? Is it possible for me to transfer all my text messages to my microsd (and to save future ones on my microsd card)? Thanks!
I was looking at apps for touch pro using the live marketplace and other sources as well. Man there aren't too many good ones; i think windows probably as the worst app selection, which iphone being best and android second am I right? Can someone correct me on this? For instance, I was just trying to find an English to Chinese dictionary; i searched for hours and I finally came up with one decent dictionary. In comparison, I used my friend's Iphone to look for one and a ton just came up in a few minutes wtf. man I'm really getting frustrated with this phone lol; i thought it'd be really great but honestly now i'm kind of disappointed. i might even just get an iphone just because there's so much platform support for it. So many websites have apps specifically designed for iphone that it's really convenient...the same can't be said for htc =/.
Have a look at these Chinese Dictionaries:

Laggy device ! I'm on standard latest 6.1 ROM & not having any real issues. Probably related to ROM, settings or installed software.
Windows Mobile is far more flexible than iphone ect but it does need more user knowledge to get the most out of it.
I already looked at those for the most part...I was just looking for free dictionaries lol. I don't want to pay for one because 1) I'd rather use my money on other things lol 2) if i reset the device, I'm not sure if I can reinstall it so that could be a waste of money.
I can't believe one of them is 200 dollars wtf lol.
Btw, I would think that the game support for Windows Mobile would be great because well it's PPC so I assumed games would be easily ported from PC. Man the games suck on PPC lol. I tried installing COD2...the controls were so bad I gave up. The only good games I've gotten are NFS and this game called Meon.
Hmm so you think that the device's hardware is laggy or is it something about my phone? Do phones get slower over time?
I think the lack of support for Windows Mobile compared to Iphone and Android is definitely one of the big problems. the latter two OSs are so much more user friendly and intuitive (although they have their own problems but I think the benefits outweigh the cons). If only Iphone had a slideout keyboard lol...
Really depends on what you use the device for in regards to applications, I have software related to engineering calculations that is only available to PPC platform plus I like the hackability of CE platform giving the ability to make things how you want them.
Games are a bit limited but you can find a few good ones & also a few good emulators for sega ect.
Support is good for the PPC but not so much in the average mobile users needs for games & gizmo apps.
Is there a way to save all my text messages onto my microsd card and access it from there instead of saving it on the internal memory?

[Q] Android Rom Help- very specific Request

Okay so here's the deal, I have not been on this website since the Windows Mobile 5 days, so the new format is a little strange for me, for those of you who remember what the site used to be like.
So no, I am not a noob, just with the new Android operating system, I'm looking to do something very specific, if it can even be done.
Device Information:
ZTE Score x500
Android 2.3.4
400MB Ram
8GB SD Card
So here's what I want to do, I just bought an iPhone, but I only want to use it for work, I don't care too much for the phone itself but for practical business purposes, it's the best thing out right now, so I'm looking to turn the Android Phone into sort of an MP3/Entertainment device on steroids.
I'm looking for a ROM that removes all phone and data functions, retains WIFI and BT, and frees up as much RAM as possible, I haven't done any browsing through the site/threads yet, but figured posting this would be the best place to start.
Like I said, I haven't done anything like this since the good old WM5 days, so any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
MMCCORMICK

well its been about 13 years...

Hey all,
Years and years ago, i had an SPCm500 and flashed it with various roms....i used to visit here quite a bit
Then android took off and that was that. I never really bothered with flashing android stuff..
I find myself back here today on XDA (under a new name) many years later with 2 new\refurbs HD2s i got for a couple of quid (2 for £7.50). My plan is to just get games on them they can run - possibly on the back of android but even on the native windows platform is good enough if anything is still out there ... and give the phones to the grandkids so they can mess around and not pinch ours or their parents phones lol...
nothing upto date, the kids are only 8 & 10, just things like tetris and anything really thats addictive games or was good at the time. Not up to date games - just games from the era so they can run ok on the devices and not need to talk to the net..
I solely want the phones to play games, youtube would be nice but not essential (wifi connect) , on device\sd - music they can listen too, no calls, no registering ideally, no sim card...
If they break the phones - which i think is likely before long, its no real big deal.
If anyone can suggest what the best approach would be for what im after above, id be grateful. Is an android flash best or stick with windows and try and find some ancient apps and transfer them from PC.
I know these phones are practically bricks now and im well out of touch with flashing roms so im all ears for whats the best i can do with these now.
any advice welcome.
cheers
Rich
Shortly released Windows 11 comes with WSA ( read: Android 11 ) inbuilt - means you can run Android apps within Windows 11 natively.
