Pixel Feature Ports - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Themes, Apps, and Mods

I know everyone has been all over the gcam port, but I've always been curious if anyone has figured out how to port other pixel-specific apps/features like the Ambient Services? Probably not, but figured I'd check. Some of those features are pretty cool, and it's one of the few things I miss about my pixel.

There are so many aosp roms for the s10 series now go check ond out you might find what you want. If you are looking for pixel festures chances are you dont care about the samsung apps/ui anyway

[Q] Seriously considering buying GS6 but I have questions regarding UI mods & roms
First off, a huge thank you to anyone who takes the time to answer these. This might be the first non-AOSP phone i've ever bought.
I know all of the answers will be somewhat speculation since the GS6 is still new but mostly I'm just looking for what's been done in the past with the Samsung Exynos processors. And if I do get one I most likely will be getting a T-Mobile branded one as there does not seem to be a Samsung unlocked version sold in the US, if I'm wrong please correct me there.
So essentially my question is, will these changes be most likely possible.
1) Removing AM/PM from 12 hour clock.
2) Disabling capacitive button light and remapping buttons back to left, multitask to right. or
3) Getting nexus-style soft keys and disabling capacitive buttons.
4) Installing the AOSP Google Dialer and contacts.
So second part is about ROMS.
Now to my understanding the Exynos essentially means no stable 100% working AOSP roms ever. That has been my understanding and part of my reason for staying away from Galaxy S phones. Recently I've seen many places where people are saying just put CM12 on it but then in my own research CM12 or anything similar either seems to not be available or has serious bugs. So is it possible, lets say more than 50% chance that the GS6 will get a 100% stable bug free AOSP rom.
As a follow up to that, if it is possible, based on earlier phones and AOSP roms, does the camera suffer or does it retain the same quality. Sony phones for example, the camera breaks badly if you unlock the bootloader and install AOSP. It requires a locked bootloader and Sony rom to function properly. Also anyway for the fingerprint reader to still work on AOSP?
Second question regarding modded touchwiz roms. Can things like my above questions, and more AOSP like mods be done in these custom roms? Such as full AOSP theming of Samsung apps, stock google apps, and would apps like T-Mobile WiFi calling still work in modded touchwiz roms.
Once again a huge thanks in advance to anyone who helps out with these questions.
1.) Yes, I have done that on my S5.
2.)Once again yes, I have done that on my S5.
3.) I'm sure there's an app for that lol
4.) Idk but I've been wondering the same thing!
Check out MOAR ROM for the Sprint S5, that's what I'm running right now, just to give you an idea of all the mods possible.
From what I've heard, AOSP build will be damn near impossible on the S6, and also from what I've read, the camera does take a major hit in quality. AOSP themeing can be done once Samsung releases the theme SDK that is built into the new TouchWiz in the S6!

That rom seems perfect for what I would want, hope the GS6 gets something on par. I love AOSP but luckily Samsung has actually done a pretty decent job with TouchWiz on lollipop and since I simply don't trust Google to make a Nexus phone with a good camera or battery anymore after the N6 I'm really considering the GS6 and I've really been enjoying playing around with it at best buy but obviously coming from 7 years of AOSP it's tough to leave.
Glad 1 and 2 are a yes. Probably my biggest annoyances. Though you mention the S5, that's on a snapdragon correct? I assume from your yes those should still be possible regardless of chipset.
I really hope 4 is possible. I've done a lot of searching but haven't found anything unfortountly. I could live with the Samsung dialer, but I would much prefer to have the Google one.
If the camera quality will degrade with AOSP than I just wouldn't even bother. Camera is probably my biggest reason for the S6 over a new Nexus.

Yeah man, that ROM made my S5 the amazing phone that I love haha, so much freakn customization within the ROM.
Yes the S5 is on Snapdragon, but MOAR is a TouchWiz based ROM, not AOSP.... and TouchWiz based ROMs won't be a proble, regardless of the chip that's used. And I also would love to see #4 too, but I'm guessing it would have to somehow be ported to work with the S6 & TouchWiz.
Some info on camera quality:
I've had every galaxy phone since the Note 2 / S3.
The camera is always MUCH worse on AOSP/CM roms. Worse than the difference on a Sony going from stock to AOSP.
However now with the new camera API and better 3rd party apps coming out I think it may not be an issue.
I tried the "Snap Camera" app on my Galaxy S6 today and it seemed just as good as the stock Samsung app but I'll have to do more testing.

Ouch. Well no need to really worry about AOSP now though it would be nice one day. Always the hope Google actually makes a good Nexus 5 again though  . I would hope that third party apps would retain quality though the new Camera app from Samsung is excellent from my experience demoing it.

Exynos is not as open (or open at all?) like Qualcom is. Therefore it is REALLY dang hard to get AOSP ROMs.

Pixel or OnePlus 3

Hows it going everyone? Im in need of a new phone. Im using a Galaxy S5 right after I accidentally destroyed my S7 Edge. Im thinking about getting a Pixel, but have also started to consider the OnePlus 3, or 3T. I wanted to know if there is anyone who has experience with both the Pixel and the OnePlus 3 and to know if you would recommend one over the other. I think its going to come down to the software. Is the stock nougat software improved enough to justify the extra cost of the Pixel? Ive watched plenty of speed comparisons and read enough about features, but I really want to hear from some actual users about their experience with both devices if possible.
Any information would be so greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Personally speaking I would not but the OP3 as they are only producing the OP3T however having owned a OP3 until very recently here are the pro's and con's of each so far.
OP3 Pro's
Way better design imho
Dash charge is awesome
Pretty much stock OS (will come back to this)
OP3 Con's
They are merging in OOS and H20S and this means a LOT more bloatware designed for the asian market
After sales support very much hit and miss
Pixel Pro's
Stock Android with way faster updates
OK Google always on
Camera is way better
Pixel Con's
That design ughh
Bezels
Chins
Software and developer Support will likely be much better on Pixel, which means it's life will probably be extended much after the 2 years. I'm not even sure OP supporting their OP2 from last year.
If you want an awesome camera, pixel. If you don't mind a sub par camera, go OnePlus.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
I've had the onelus3 for a while before getting the pixel.
@daleski75 is correct, before the OOS and HOS merge I would have recommended the OnePlus. The dev scene is OK, but majority of the Roms are cyanogen based or stock based. Anything that's not based on stock HOS will suffer in the camera department. I know there are options but afaik, nothing matches stock OOS/HOS for camera capabilities.
Now, I would recommend the pixel purely for the dev support. The camera is amazing and will continue to be after a custom ROM. Plus if you get bored in a year the resale will still be good and oneplus3 will be dirt cheap.

Yup now that they are merging both os the biggest draw for me to the OP range has now gone.
And to add to this in my opinion CM is on the whole a giant hack for the OP and although stability overall is good it's buggy as hell.
So to the original poster if you want a phone which is guaranteed to get good support, fast updates and a awesome dev scene stick to the pixel range.
If price is a deciding factor then the 3T is a very good phone.

interesting phone?!

the meizu m6 note is very interesting to me for the specs and price. I might've gotten it over rn4 if I knew about it sooner. there's a lot of sd 625 phones out there and this is the only one I heard about having really good battery life and camera at the same time for under 200. probably beats some 300-400 phones too in terms of battery and camera balance. a few problems atm could be the lte bands and no custom roms but still seems great for those who like to stay on stock. camera is already good from what I read so might not need the google one that badly yet and there's also root option in settings. I've been on miui 9 for a bit and don't mind being on it for a while longer. it makes me wonder how different flyme os is. if battery is similar for both on stock and camera for m6n is already good out of the box without any tweaks needed then I'd probably regret the rn4 unless my experiences with custom roms can make it a lot better but I heard miui has the best battery life compared to most of them. I'm also wondering how google camera on rn4 would compare to m6n stock camera. idk much when it comes to hardware vs software but I'm planning to try it on my rn4 soon. apologies if i've offended any rn4 users i'm still noob because its new to me. maybe i shouldn't have posted about it before trying things first but i did need a comparison with another similar device. support for m6n would be great! even though i haven't bought one yet..

[Question] Is it possible to port other sd845 roms to the OnePlus6?

Is it possible to port other sd845 roms to the OnePlus6? I just saw that the US Snapdragon Galaxy S9 Samsung Pie beta build has been released so their official build probably isn't far off.
I was wondering if it is possible to port other sd845 roms like this one to our phone?
What is required?
Kernel source from the other ROM I assume? (and same kernel version number?)
And someone who knows how to rebuild the kernel for the OnePlus6?
I don't really know how to do these things myself, I'm just wondering if anyone knows if it would be possible, cheers
Possible? Perhaps.. But so much work for nothing that developers just will drop the idea.

It is nearly impossible. Especially for a Samsung rom, which are some of the most sophisticated and bloated roms in the industry.
Its nearly impossible because Samsung rom need lots of work you need to work on every single app to make it work because they made everything work with framework they made like iphones this is why no app ports available from Samsung they added lots of features & apps into their os so they also don't Know sometimes where the problem come from if you see Samsung devices work fast in Start then slow down in few weeks.

You're talking about porting individual Samsung apps. Yes, it's a huge headache. I know because I've done it a long time ago on older android versions, but that wasn't my question.
My question is about porting the entire rom. This way you don't have to port each app to work on a new device, because the phone will think it IS the galaxy S9. This way the Samsung framework will be included in the rom port and the apps will all work (because they are dependent on the Samsung framework to run). The difficulty lies in getting the slightly different components (other than the sd845 processor) of the OnePlus 6 to work with the S9 rom

Since you already know about porting, and Samsung roms, shouldn't you already know the answer?
I don't remember ever seeing a Samsung rom ported to another device. But that goes back about 10 years, so maybe my memory is not good. In either case, porting a Samsung rom now would be much more difficult than 10 years ago because the complexity of their roms increases exponentially.
Appreciate if anyone is working on other skins rom!?

Your right. It hasn't been done. Also it wouldn't be legal to Port Samsung's proprietary files. HTC shut it down when people started porting their stuff.
The chip might be the same but all the other hardware isn't

I see your point, but just because something has never been done before doesn't mean it's not possible. Nothing in our world would have ever been invented if everyone had that mentality.
I was just saying that removing dependencies from individual apps wouldn't be necessary if the framework and whole rom was ported across to this device. I have very basic knowledge of android and I'm not a programmer but I was able to get the Samsung clock app to work on AOSP/any android device years ago, it just took a lot of trial and error and removing all the touchwiz dependencies etc. I remember playing around with the Samsung camera app trying to get it to work because the Cyanogenmod camera was so crap back then too but never got that to work. Yes I can only imagine how complex they would be making their apps and software these days.
I guess what I'm saying is that if I could manage to port the clock app and get it to work with little knowledge, I can't help but wonder what someone who knows a lot more about android development could do, this is basically what I was trying to say in my first post.

Yeah... you're probably right, and Samsung would absolutely hate it if we could run their software on a $500 phone just as well as their $1500 phones!

This is what I'm saying in the first post, with my limited knowledge I understand that a lot of the hardware info and drivers are in the kernel? I assume it'd be a matter of Samsung releasing their kernel source for their pie build and then a oneplus 6 kernel being built with what's needed to boot a Samsung rom with oneplus 6 drivers built into the kernel? I guess I'm asking because I honestly don't know what is or would be involved, that and I'm just curious.
It's a bit of a hypothetical question I guess

Nothing is impossible. The real question is who will go through with the work of actually doing it?
Most people see Samsung in particular not the greatest example of software so it's a daunting task with little to gain from it overall. Unless if you're paying someone a hefty amount I can't see it happening anytime soon. At most maybe a Samsung like theme is the best we can get
Buy a S9+ and enjoy with their ****ty UI
Yeah, thanks for your input and amazing contribution to the conversation there @DamiDev :good:
In my whole time using Android (2009) I've seen about one successful HTC port and probably five TouchWiz attempts that people gave up on. It's not worth the time or effort for a closed source system that isn't anything worthwhile to begin with
Fair point @crixley
It's annoying that OEMs take an open source project and turn it into a closed source rom

New Pixel 3a, new questions

Hi all. OG member here.
I've been away from the XDA community for a couple of years and am now making a return. I had a job that made me use my phone for work, so I had to stop modding and screwing with it. With my new job (that gave me another phone), I can finally go back to tinkering. I recently bought a Pixel 3a (on Google Fi [eSIM]) as my daily driver and want some advice from everyone. My questions are:
What ROMs support eSIM?
Is it worth it to even flash the Pixel 3a? What things break? Should I really care about Active Edge and GPay?
How is the dev community for this phone or the line of Pixels?
The stock camera is already pretty good on the 3a, but are there any better ones in ROMs.
AOSP vs Pixel base vs ????
(Also, apparently Cyanogen mod is no more and is now Lineage? WTH...)
Anyways, I'd love to have a cool discussion/conversation with you all, technical or normal.
Thanks!

I hope someone else jumps in because I dont know all of the answers to your questions.
I don't know about eSIM sorry.
It could be worth it, its up to you what you deem as worth it. I personally have stuck to staying on everything on stock with magisk root because of Vanced Youtube. It's definitely worth it for me.
The dev community had a strong start and it has been growing. It's great, although it's not super big like some other lines ( for whatever reason that may be).
That I know of, Roms, either use stock or open camera.
I like stock because I like to update to the latest build from Google every month. Plus Q release will be out eventually and soon from what I hear.
