Pixel or OnePlus 3 - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Hows it going everyone? Im in need of a new phone. Im using a Galaxy S5 right after I accidentally destroyed my S7 Edge. Im thinking about getting a Pixel, but have also started to consider the OnePlus 3, or 3T. I wanted to know if there is anyone who has experience with both the Pixel and the OnePlus 3 and to know if you would recommend one over the other. I think its going to come down to the software. Is the stock nougat software improved enough to justify the extra cost of the Pixel? Ive watched plenty of speed comparisons and read enough about features, but I really want to hear from some actual users about their experience with both devices if possible.
Any information would be so greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Personally speaking I would not but the OP3 as they are only producing the OP3T however having owned a OP3 until very recently here are the pro's and con's of each so far.
OP3 Pro's
Way better design imho
Dash charge is awesome
Pretty much stock OS (will come back to this)
OP3 Con's
They are merging in OOS and H20S and this means a LOT more bloatware designed for the asian market
After sales support very much hit and miss
Pixel Pro's
Stock Android with way faster updates
OK Google always on
Camera is way better
Pixel Con's
That design ughh
Bezels
Chins

Software and developer Support will likely be much better on Pixel, which means it's life will probably be extended much after the 2 years. I'm not even sure OP supporting their OP2 from last year.

If you want an awesome camera, pixel. If you don't mind a sub par camera, go OnePlus.

I've had the onelus3 for a while before getting the pixel.
@daleski75 is correct, before the OOS and HOS merge I would have recommended the OnePlus. The dev scene is OK, but majority of the Roms are cyanogen based or stock based. Anything that's not based on stock HOS will suffer in the camera department. I know there are options but afaik, nothing matches stock OOS/HOS for camera capabilities.
Now, I would recommend the pixel purely for the dev support. The camera is amazing and will continue to be after a custom ROM. Plus if you get bored in a year the resale will still be good and oneplus3 will be dirt cheap.

The camera in the OP3 is actually pretty good overall.

Yup now that they are merging both os the biggest draw for me to the OP range has now gone.
And to add to this in my opinion CM is on the whole a giant hack for the OP and although stability overall is good it's buggy as hell.
So to the original poster if you want a phone which is guaranteed to get good support, fast updates and a awesome dev scene stick to the pixel range.
If price is a deciding factor then the 3T is a very good phone.

Low activity for the X play

While I'm still waiting for my phone to arrive I'm wondering why the dev community for the X play is so small. The LG G4 also suffers from this problem. Coming from a nexus device this is new for me. Maybe someone might have an answer for me. Too new phone? no code from motorola to work on Marshmallow builds? Unattractive phone? Everyone waiting for the MM code drops?
I'm happy there are devs at all, you're the reason I decided for the phone, so keep up the good work

Nexus as everyone knows has a huge fan following. This particular device hasn't much fan following. The stock firmware is already out. Unattractive I won't say.

The more owners any given model has, the more likely it is that there are programmers among them capable of android development. Then there's the question of how much of the drivers/firmware is available as open source or compatible third-party stuff. Finally, there's the question of how much the phone actually benefits from custom anything.
Currently, i am on a stock ROM stock kernel with xposed and gravitybox and i currently have no open wishes ... except maybe the LED notification light, that would only work with a custom kernel.
X play is great, even with stock
@AtomicStryker I totally agree. Stock 6.0 is fast and smooth. Really not missing the bugs or broken features of the latest CM versions
Get a themeable launcher, like Slim launcher form Xda, root for adaway or netguard if you don't root, and basically you're done ! Enjoy.

For systemwide themes, layers is there and everything is settled.
Even the sound performance on earphones is so good, no need of any sound mods. ?

I'm waiting on my phone too, but the community will hopefully pick up as more dev teams get their hands on the device and whatnot. Things should gain traction after the overall international release of Marshmallow on this device is done, I'd say. Fingers crossed.
That's true. I was using xiaomi mi3 . great hardware for its price. But hated to use KitKat forever. It has got great developers .
But once I lost the mobile I got mxp. Honestly it's got very less support at the moment. I expected lot of activity.
I used to have so many notifications in xda when I was using mi3

Best thing i did was go from the Nexus 5 to the MXP. The N5 needed all the dev work to be usable where as the MXP is great out of the box.

The battery life and the camera are the only noticeable upgrades of the Moto x play, but performance wise, the nexus 5 is superior.

I do agree with you on the superior performance of the N5 compared to the MXP. But let's focus on the important things, do we want to charge our smartphone everytime at the end of the day?
This is one of the reasons I moved from my beloved N5 to this new phone. Regularly, I use my smartphone for IM, browsing and e-mail. Do I need to have the best performance ? Certainly not.
More important is to have a phone that brings a battery endurance that lasts up to 2 days. The N5 in my 2 years of usage was like driving a ferrari. Unprecedented performance but an appalling operating range (battery life), charging the phone twice a day was nothing special.
As for the dev activity. The nexus community is unmatched when it comes to this. It can certainly be better but we have xposed framework + gravity box and also an unoffical cm13 build that looks promising to reach official status soon.
Cheers,
Ynternet

No Nexus phone offers Bluetooth aptX or µSD card support, the bright screen of the MXP is excellent in itself, the front facing speaker is loud etc.

Patience friend, Marshmallow is coming.
Joining the family soon.. To be precise Tomorrow.
I wouldn't compare Motorola's phones to Nexus line at all. Dev's love Nexuses, they always did. Sure, Moto's look kinda similar, being so close to stock and all, but it's not actually stock android right? You can kinda see the dev scene picking up slowly and I think it's only going to get better once MM is available worldwide.
On a side note, it's nice to see I wasn't the only one coming from Nexus 5 to MXP. Turns out there are plenty of people willing to trade off some pure benchmark performance for actual quality-of-life improvements, like battery and screen.

My previous phone was a nexus 5 also, roll on MM.

Custom Rom Questions

I have been using a FRD-L14 running EMUI 4.1 (B150) for a few months and while I love having such a long battery life, I am starting to get frustrated with how much of my apps the system automatically kills in the background (alarm apps, text delay send, etc). I am considering trying out a custom ROM but have a few questions before proceeding.
1. If I make a TWRP nandroid backup, can I just reflash that at any time and revert back to my current rom without any hiccups if I have regrets?
2. I remember reading somewhere that I have to first upgrade to EMUI 5.0 before using a custom rom, this will not cause any issue with potential rollback?
3. What is the best currently available custom rom to try if I am looking for longest battery life and fewest bugs? Will the battery life come anywhere close to EMUI 4.1?
Thank you in advance!
Aren't there any official updates for the premium H8s?
Also that's quite the lengthy question and I know it's been asked before somewhere, please use the search function.
(Plus i can't remember the exact details as well)
Also battery life is **** with custom,(won't last me a day so i went back to stock) especially compared to MM (Even stock nougat is a worse) and all of them are somewhat buggy, but it depends on what you use.

I'm a new user of the Honor 8 with the exact same problem...
Also have the FRD-L14... wondering if any improvements/insights?
Would love to root, remove bloat, and even install a custom ROM, but all I've seen is that it can be a complete clusterf*#@ to do so. I'm just about to return this phone, its quirks are really ruining it for me.

i recommend that you return it asap! there are other phones that are way better. the good thing is that most new phones will have oreo and treble by default which is going to be mandatory in android from now on.
at worst, users will get AOSP. at best, custom ROMs that have much better functionality. i recommend saving for either a oneplus, or maybe a nokia.
thanks, I think you're right, just such a headache shopping for a bargain again. do you have any recs for phones that are similarly fast but without the intrusive bloat and which hopefully are easily rooted/support magisk mods etc? I wish the xiomi 5 series worked in the US, they sound great for the money. maybe another Chinese brand (Oppo, Meizu) that has better specs than the going rate here but can also be modded? I don't need to get it back to Amazon until the end of February (thank you, extended holiday returns), so I can wait for shipment from China. Or else a Motorola or even Nokia? need to keep under $350; significantly less would be much better.
appreciate it if you have any ideas.

sorry, just saw that you HAD recs. kind of intrigued by Nokia because I think they're selling at a discount to get their name out there. is there a specific model?
and is there anywhere you can still buy a OP3?

okay, so now that you informed me about your location (US) it seems that you and i are in the same situation. i was waiting to get a 1+5t after buying a few 1+5s for various family members. they all needed updates. after thinking about it i decided to wait because 1+ lacks the one thing i desperately rely on.... EXPANDABLE STORAGE!
sadly, this is the one area where huawei really excels at. they include expandable storage on most of their phones. after htc decided to skip a US release of the U11+ it seemed that i would be forced to settle for the 1+ but thankfully there have been leaks of many new devices.
the one im looking forward to is the new redesigned sony line. from what i have read they will keep the 16:9 which i love and adopt a rear fingerprint scanner plus small bezels. the huge bezels are the only thing keeping me from buying a sony as they keep their android ROM clean with no horrible UI.
aside from sony, xiaomi is said to be releasing a few phones in the us as well. these combined with a redesign of the LG flagships. that makes for many options but, you will need to set aside a bit of money. imho, it will be worth it because all of these phones will come with oreo and treble.
for those devices that have a horrible stock rom, you can just install AOSP or any of the treble based custom ROMs. it will be great since all the latest phones have more longevity thanks to their hardware. the only limitation is software but treble will take care of that.
as far as a 1+3/t, you can find them on swappa. if bought 2 a few weeks back for $215 shipped. both were 64GB models that only needed the screen repaired. the total ended costing me about $170 each. if you have any kind of experience with repair, i recommend taking that route. i hope this helped, if you have any questions, dont hesitate to pm me. we gotta help each other out some way or another. cheers!

interesting phone?!

the meizu m6 note is very interesting to me for the specs and price. I might've gotten it over rn4 if I knew about it sooner. there's a lot of sd 625 phones out there and this is the only one I heard about having really good battery life and camera at the same time for under 200. probably beats some 300-400 phones too in terms of battery and camera balance. a few problems atm could be the lte bands and no custom roms but still seems great for those who like to stay on stock. camera is already good from what I read so might not need the google one that badly yet and there's also root option in settings. I've been on miui 9 for a bit and don't mind being on it for a while longer. it makes me wonder how different flyme os is. if battery is similar for both on stock and camera for m6n is already good out of the box without any tweaks needed then I'd probably regret the rn4 unless my experiences with custom roms can make it a lot better but I heard miui has the best battery life compared to most of them. I'm also wondering how google camera on rn4 would compare to m6n stock camera. idk much when it comes to hardware vs software but I'm planning to try it on my rn4 soon. apologies if i've offended any rn4 users i'm still noob because its new to me. maybe i shouldn't have posted about it before trying things first but i did need a comparison with another similar device. support for m6n would be great! even though i haven't bought one yet..

Any non-GSI ROM builds in development?

This phone has been out for quite some time now and the lack of developer support is pretty shocking.
Are any developers working on builds of ROMs for Polaris? Outside if Mokee, I haven't seen anything, and I still haven't seen a single AOSP build.
Better get used to MIUI...
Wouldn't have bought it if I knew the situation would end up being that desolate.

Same here - I may end up selling at some point. I'm very disappointed in the level of support, which is likely a result of people not buying the phone.
I bought this phone because of its great hardware and a reasonable price.
I disliked miui from the beginning so I installed pixel experience and I am happy with it for now. I don't rely on manufacturers anymore to update devices rather I come back here and get what I need.
Would be nice if this device would get more love from the devs but I hope that, with the number of sd845 devices surfacing and being popular in bigger markets like India or China, some devs will port the pixel experience pie ROM to our device.

My main issue is the Camera. Pixel Experience, and Benzo GSI work very well on my device, however the picture quality of the camera is pretty bad comparatively.
Images look very grainy when zoomed, and overall the MIUI camera does a much better job.
I'm hoping at some point that a dev is able to port the camera app over. They did it for the RN5.

I use the BSG Mod camera MGC_5.1.018_MI8_V1b which works really well. Portrait mode is good, low light pictures are good too. I'm not into 4k slowmo Videos so that's not the deal breaker for me.
My biggest concern is that this device is not as popular as many other lower priced devices by Xiaomi and therefore no dev will appear and make some good roms. And if someone builds them I hope they will be maintained.
One inmate here made a pixel experience for our device and I was really excited. But he or she disappeared and was never seen again. No sign of life since months and no feedback to PM's or in his/her own thread.
Maybe the pocophone with the same soc will push development further. Maybe someone can port a pixel experience rom for our device.
I'd even be happy to donate money and I'm not talking about 10€ but far more to anyone who builds an almost bug free rom with all the hardware support the device needs with all functions working as they should.
I hope there will be some developments soon, or at least a dev that can kill the bugs in the GSI roms. Most of the things are working perfectly fine with GSI's, there's only some annoying bugs that have to be eliminated.
We have a well known dev who makes Los for our device, if you join our telegram group you can test his releases, however he lost some time because he accidently damaged his phone so it will still take some time until he publishes on xda

Moving from Pixel to Poco?

Hi all!. I used to be flashaholic guys and when they released Google Pixel series I immediately fell in love with them. However after using Pixel phones my flashaholic side seems to be gone because what I now want it GCAM for decent photos, + Google Stock ROM/Pure Android ROM. Long story short, I had to sell my pixel phones and currently I cant afford to buy new pixel phone. So that's when I saw this device Poco X3 with good XDA community where I can find pixel + pure android based ROMS. It would be really great if you guys can help me out with below question.
1. Are there any almost perfect/bugless pixel/pure android based ROMs for android 10?
2. Is there any perfect/good GCAM port for this device?
Like I said before, I highly appreciate you guys input and I asked those questions because I need to make a decision. I have high respect for the devs and the community.
Hey,
I have exactly the same story, always been flashing custom roms, kernels and stuff. But then pixels came in, i always loved stock android thus usually flashed aosp based roms, so pixels came in i got myself a pixel 2 and didnt flash a single rom on it to date, had been using it for like 3years now (since release date till this week)
Now i wanted a good phone but didnt want to spend a lot of cash so got myself a poco x3 because i saw developers community was active on xda, it has already got few roms and i think gcam port will be available soon but honestly for me the stock camera is pretty fine
It is a good phone, i like the camera too. For my usage which is social apps and books usually, it works fine. Havent faced a major bug so far except for that my camera switch was taking 2 - 3 seconds, cleaning the camera app data fixed that too
I think it is a good buy, gives a premium feel too. As

I haven't tried all roms but this far Arrow OS seems pretty nice, I tried both Pixel Experience 10 and 11 and I can't say they're good yet, 10 gave me a headache with Play Protect not being certificated and 11 has poor performance, Arrow on the other hand is really really smooth and looks clean, I flashed 'Fixy' kernel as well and performance wise runs so much better than MIUI with also better battery autonomy, you did a great buy, the Poco Is a great phone, the only thing I miss from my old OP5 is the oled panel.
