Problems with tethering - Samsung Galaxy S10e Questions & Answers

Hello, i have an Exynos S10e, unbranded.
I have some problems with tethering (mobile hotspot).
The speedtest is good, but sometimes there are some "lags", the connection seems to "stop" for some seconds (pages don't load) and then it restarts as normal. Also the ping seems to be normal, about 30ms.
Another thing: i used to play some browser games sometimes, now they are not usable, there are too many lags. I don't care too much about browser games, but it's just a signal that something is wrong, i don't have these problems on my old device (G2 mini, same carrier and same sim, same place and hour).
I tried to disable the "energy saving" option on mobile hostpot settings, but nothing changes.
Any idea on how to solve this?
Overall it's not unusable, but it's disappointing to have slower internet using a new phone.

Same here. And the April 2020 update broke USB tethering. See also: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5...ng-doesn-t-work-after-the-update/td-p/1174158
Waiting for the May 2020 update to see if USB tethering will work again.

Today i used the tethering with another pc and it works much better.
It may be a problem of compatibility between wi-fi chips, or something similar.
I'll update this thread if I'll discover something more.

I tried USB tethering and seems to work much better than wifi hotspot.
I updated to android10, don't know if it's the "april update" you talk about, but now it doesn't show other update requests.

[Q] Can we use P920(H) as a modem for a 3G router?

Hello all. I've just purchased a 3G/WAN WI-FI router (TP-Link model TL-MR3420 - link to manufacturer's page). It has an USB port to connect a 3G/4G modem. I tried to connect my P920H (V28b stock ICS - XBSA large partitions) but the router doesn't recognise it. I tried to use an older 3G phone (Sony Ericsson W980) and it works like a charm. In both cases I configured the phones to USB tether with their own configuration options.
Anyone managed to make this work? I believe the router lacks a driver, but I've found no driver for any phone on the manufacturer's page, although I works with the Walkman phone.
Edit: I forgot to mention that all tethering features on my phone works fine. I can turn on my hotspot and I can plug it to a PC's USB port and act like a modem. I just can't do it with my router.
Why I want to do this: Most of you who have nice broadband access may be wondering why I want to use my phone to provide Internet access to my router. Here's why: In the region I live, broadband access is a joke. A miserable 1Mbps insufficcient to watch even the lamest youtube video. But it has no limitations, so it is good for TV upgrades and other connected devices to do their maintenance.
On the other hand, my phone provider has a wonderful coverage around my house, sustaining an average of 3Mbps, reaching 10Mbps late at night. So, when I want a quicker net, like to watch Internet movies or download large files, I used to turn off my router and turn on the phone's hotspot. But even setting its SSID and password identical to the ones on the router, it takes some tweaking on the devices for them to reconnect. It was a nuisance.
With this 3G router, all I would have to do is connect the phone to it and it would switch from WAN to 3G. All I need is a driver that would make it recognize the phone and use it as a modem.
I messed with wifi tethering a bit a while back. Couldn't get it to work. My other phone sees it as a wifi point but won't connect. Something to do with LG not liking tethering I heard. I saw this mod that fixes tethering for some devices but never tried it ( I don't really need tethering). I am curious if it fixes it:

Hello drastic00!
Thank you for your suggestion. I understand that the mod you suggested can have nice effects on slow or even broken tethering.
The problem is that I haven't made myself clear on the first post. I can see it now and I'll edit it right away. The tethering feature on my phone works fine, both WI-FI and USB tethering works. What I need is a USB tethering that makes my router "think" that my phone is actually a 3G USB modem. When I use this feature on a PC, I have to install the drivers. The bad news is that I can't install these drivers on the router.
Okay. I figured if wifi tether isn't working then usb isn't either. So what firmware do you have on which it is working?
There was a small discussion on a thread a month or so ago; it wasn't working for the 4 or so people who posted then...I think we were all on ICS or higher, but not positive. That's when I tried to see if I could get wifi tether to work. I didn't try any usb tethering.
So I guess I am not understanding the advantage of plugging direct to the router. Why not plug the phone to pc (signal in) and the router to pc (signal out)? Because it would be easier to switch from the signal you normally use? This is a new one on me... I have no idea if an ethernet switch would be of use...2 signals in for the router to broadcast and choose which wifi signal on the client end (not sure if your router could do that, just grasping at straws, since I haven't tried anything like this).
It's weird other phones work though, so I am still curious if Crossbreeder mod would do anything. It seems the other phones have a piece of software the O3D does not. Unless the router has drivers installed for those devices by default, which I doubt; you didn't install anything for those to work, they worked out-of-the-box, so to speak, right?
Exactly. Both WIFI and USB tether always worked out of the box for me, with several ROMs, either stock and modded ROMs. Eventualy some modded ROMs did break tether, but usually broke many other things as well Probably too undervolt and/or too overclock among other things I don´t understand.
I remember that discussion about not working tether, but didn´t get involved. It never happened to me. I believe it is more a hardware issue. If it happened to me, the first thing I would do is install the original stock Froyo to be sure if tether didn´t work with the most original firmware.
As to why I want to put my O3D as the Internet provider for my network: I have several devices connected: 3 PCs, 2 Androids, 1 TV and 1 Blu-ray player. The last two are not too easy to make connect to a different WIFI net, even if they have the same SSID and passwords. I used to turn off the router and then turning on the phone´s hotspot. The problem is that almost always several of these devices didn´t realise the switch and kept trying to connect to the unavailable router. The same thing happend when switching from the phone to the router.
Also, I don´t want to buy a 3G modem, because the speed advantage (and low fees) are "connected" to my voice plan. The SIM card is my primary phone number So, I need it to be able to make and receive calls. If I purchase a new SIM card, I would have to cope with two bills. Again, no more advantages.
Breaking news: I just noticed that the Sony Ericsson Walkman phone I am using as a modem only gets 1Mbps download, exactly the speed my provider guarantees. My P920H can get more than 10 Mbps on times, but usually between 3 and 5 Mbps. I believe that V28b stock ICS somehow unlocks some sort of ISP speed limit. Now, more than ever I want to use my phone as a modem on my router.

[Q] Major (home) WiFi connection issues

Hi. Yesterday I got my new Z3, and since then, I've had nothing but WiFi trouble.
My basic home setup:
Linksys EA4500
1 Mediapc with Plex installed
1 Sonos speaker
1 Chromecast connected to my TV
3 pads (samsung, sony tablet z)
Several android phones
Until yesterday (and exept with my Tablet Z - more on that later) my network works as supposed. All units can talk to each other, and most important, my phones and tablet can ALWAYS find and use my Sonos, Chromcast and Plex server. I have a Nexus 5, SGS3, SGS4 and more, and all are connected. Always. Without hickups.
Not so with the Z3. Althoug it says I'm connected - and I can indeed reach outside websites like cnn.com etc.. more often than not the in-house resources are unavailable. Early on I remembered that my Tablet Z had a similar issue, but turning off the Stamina modus on that one always solved the issue. Again, not so with my new Z3. No matter how many functions I turn off - starting with Stamina mode - I'm unable to reach my Plex server, find the Sonos or Chromecast devices. Also, restarting the device or the router don't seem to help either. Even more frustrating, suddenly the phone will find the resources, only to have them drop out again two minutes later... even if the screen was on all the time (did not go into stand-by).
I've turned off all the functions that was part of the reason I bought the phone...
I've changed the router setup to have mixed modes and all other tips I've found on the forums...
I've tried setting a static IP-adress for the phone on the router, and although it lists the phone, still no luck...
(beside the fact that all other devices still connect and work as expected)
I'm extremely frustrated. This is a premium device with a premium pricetag, and I cannot trust it to even connect and use my own WiFi setup.
So in short - please advice.

maybe the no. of devices connected to your router is limited? try removing some devices from your server and try it..
Settings > WiFi > Menu > Advanced > Uncheck "WiFi Optimisation"
See if this makes a difference as it disables all power saving features related to the wifi chip.
Mine was useless. But swapped router and seems fine now.
Try a factory reset on the router, clears all data but leaves original passwords and stuff, if you've not messed with the router, then it's a simple fix.
If you have messed with the router then it might be a setting you tweaked. So a reset may help.
Either way, worth a shot

Wi-fi connection dropping out

Hi all, I'm on unrooted stock and have so far only disabled bloatware and system apps via the stock app manager. I've got a solid wireless network throughout my house with one Linksys WRT54G2 running as a wired gateway (with wireless connections) to my main router, a Linksys/Cisco E3200 (only wireless connections except the gateway). I don't have issues with any other wi-fi enabled hardware, including two tablets running Lollipop and my Note 2 which was running CM 12.1, but with this phone the connection seems to drop after a couple hours of non-use (i.e. - while sleeping overnight or while running around making dinner and taking care of our baby at night). When this happens the phone tells me that I'm still connected to my wireless network but there is no throughput until I cycle the wi-fi on/off in the phone settings and it reconnects.
This happens with wi-fi calling enabled. I have yet to make a successful call with wi-fi calling so I will leave it disabled today but doubtful that will cure my issue. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Other than that I'm loving this phone and was so ready for an upgrade, will probably root before long but will try to keep the stock rom for a bit. TouchWiz still has its quirks but has come a long way over the last few years. Additionally, has anyone been following this thread? I will probably look at something like this in the coming days to increase battery life but for the most part I think all of my needs will be met with the wireless tether APN settings change and software. Thanks

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Bluetooth connection problems

Hey guys,
So basically I drive a 2016 Volvo V70 (car model not so important tbh) and before I got my Galaxy N20U I used to have an iPhone 8+.
At the time when I connected it to my car's bluetooth system, things used to run quite perfectly when playing music. Using the car's buttons I could rewind and fast-forward songs by pressing and holding in apps like Spotify.
Now with the Galaxy N20U, answering calls works sorta well, and I can skip songs forwards and backwards by short-pressing the car buttons, BUT I can't "slide" or "seek" the tracks, as in fast-forward or backwards, like I used to be able to do with the iPhone. I did all sorts of basic troubleshooting like unpairing and repairing the phone, resetting, trying other music players; but the problem still persists.
I messed around with the bluetooth connection type in Developer Mode settings on the Galaxy, but tbh I don't really understand what the settings mean or which one should be right. I'm not really aware what bluetooth version my car has either, but I think it would be an older version since it's 2014-2016 technology.
How can I fix it or tune the settings of the Galaxy in order to solve this? Or are there any apps I could install which fixes this issue?
Another problem with the Galaxy's BT connection is with my Windows 10 laptop. It's a pretty new laptop (HP Spectre 15 x360 2019) running the latest version of Windows 10.
Basically I did what everyone would do and I linked my Samsung to Windows, so I could have a similar continuity experience like Mac/iPhones have, like having a stable and automatic connection, picking up calls and texts from your laptop, and most importantly that your phone shares hotspot automatically through Bluetooth tethering when you're outside of home.
I tried several things like linking and unlinking through Microsoft's "Link Your Phone", and even tried with Samsung's Dex. I tried with both functions on, or one of them being unlinked.
The problem still persists, that it's not an automated and constant connection between the laptop and the phone, and that especially when it comes to automatic bluetooth tethering; then I always have to do it manually through clicking through several menus on Windows and creating an Access Point connecting to Bluetooth like some sort of a LAN connection. Every single time. And even when this connection is established, I'd see a LAN icon on the status bar (instead of signal bars) and when I expand the menu, it doesn't even list the current connection it is on (like "Samsung bla bla bla: Connected"). Instead I just get nearby WiFi networks and that it's searching. I DO get internet though and it works fine for the most part, but once I leave the room and the phone gets out of the range, or I put the laptop to standby, then I have to repeat the process all over again.
Even when I opt to sharing internet from my phone to the laptop through normal WiFi hotspot, I notice that the connection drops frequently.
To summarize, when it comes to both the car and my laptop, my Galaxy N20U does connect to them and offers the basic functionalities of the BT connection, BUT it misses other basic functionalities and it tends to be a half-baked, unstable connection.
Please help me out with this! Running the latest versions of softwares on all the named devices here.
For now turn off Developer options.
Clear the system cache on the boot menu
Reset network connections.
Pretty harmless and it may fix it...
dont have that problem

Hotspot issue on android 11

Hello, I have been having a weird hotspot issue on my S20+ 5G. I do not think this is device specific as it has happened on my S10 5G. It seems to be android 11 related (don't recall it being an issue on android 10)
Little context - I play online games through my hotspot, and randomly it will stop working. Everything says its fine on the phone. However, it says 0 devices connected and I cannot connect unless I toggle off then back on the hotspot. At first I thought it was interference from local wifi networks - but mine is the only one at 149 channel (checked with WiFI Info View).
I only notice this happening when gaming. If I am streaming anything, it is fine. The phone has internet too, so its not the service.
My first thought is some sort of battery saving thing. Like, could there be something in android 11 that causes this cause there isn't enough data throughput?
Im just wondering if anyone has any thoughts to try. I have disabled all known to me battery saver things.
Extra info: Definitely seems related to wifi hotspot only not USB
