Wi-fi connection dropping out - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

Hi all, I'm on unrooted stock and have so far only disabled bloatware and system apps via the stock app manager. I've got a solid wireless network throughout my house with one Linksys WRT54G2 running as a wired gateway (with wireless connections) to my main router, a Linksys/Cisco E3200 (only wireless connections except the gateway). I don't have issues with any other wi-fi enabled hardware, including two tablets running Lollipop and my Note 2 which was running CM 12.1, but with this phone the connection seems to drop after a couple hours of non-use (i.e. - while sleeping overnight or while running around making dinner and taking care of our baby at night). When this happens the phone tells me that I'm still connected to my wireless network but there is no throughput until I cycle the wi-fi on/off in the phone settings and it reconnects.
This happens with wi-fi calling enabled. I have yet to make a successful call with wi-fi calling so I will leave it disabled today but doubtful that will cure my issue. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Other than that I'm loving this phone and was so ready for an upgrade, will probably root before long but will try to keep the stock rom for a bit. TouchWiz still has its quirks but has come a long way over the last few years. Additionally, has anyone been following this thread? I will probably look at something like this in the coming days to increase battery life but for the most part I think all of my needs will be met with the wireless tether APN settings change and software. Thanks

Shaky Wi-Fi

I've noticed that my WiFi connection is unstable regardless of which ROM I'm using. I'm sitting less than 10 feet from my router and the signal is excellent yet my Fuze WiFi won't connect...I can't update 2.1 weather, can't open a page in Opera and IE.
Anyone out there with a solid WiFi connection every time they use it? Which ROM are you on? What are your settings/edits?
I'm desperate to find a solution to this since having a built in WiFi is one of the perks of the Fuze. And I don't want to be held hostage by AT$T ridiculous data plan.
i'm using EnergyRom Jan 27th build 21889. I've never had any problems with wifi for any EnergyRom builds i use. I don't really set anything up, i just turn wifi on, and just enter the WPA passkey and it's done, it's only a one time setup, everytime i turn wifi on it'll automatically connect.
There are tools like Wifi Monster etc that can show you the strength of the wifi signal, as well as tools that gives you options to set up an advanced profile (I think it's called Wifi Profile).......
do a search for Wifi in PPCWarez and you'll find what you need.

Thanks for the reply. I'm also on EnergyRom Jan 27th build 21889....I've actually been an avid follower of NRG Roms but have never had a consistent WiFi connection. I really don't know where I'm going wrong. I've been using the same WiFi for the past 3 years. I didn't have WiFi connection problems with RoMeo's Rom on my Tilt or on my Hermes. Just would like to have a dependable WiFi connection. I'm pretty sure it's not the Rom..just curious if I had things configured properly.
I am also having problems with the Wi-Fi connection on my HTC Touch Pro. It is very unstable and unreliable -it flies for 10-20 seconds, and then hangs. The problem persists with different routers. I am using the stock HTC ROM.
Performance Mode
Hi guys,
have yo tried switching WiFi mode from "Battery Saving" to "Performance"?
Start/Setting/Connections/Wifi icon
The same wi fi problem for me: it recognizes the network, it asks for the pass, but it doesn't connect.
i'm two meters from the router... any suggestion?
Try...
Change your wifi settings to preformance first.
Things that affect WiFi not particular to your phone:
1. Bluetooth on and active (same frequencies) on your phone as well as others
2. Other Routers (esp. if you live in an apartment)
3. Running Microwaves ovens
4. Other RF devices in the 2.4GHz range. (i.e. wireless keyboards, mice, novelty devices, etc.)
The only step to do is change your router at home to another channel and try again. If you are connecting outside your home, then you are at the mercy of the provider.

data conection/wifi question

if i have bouth data and wifi turned on and i am connected to a wifi spot...do i need to turn off the data conection first before it will stop sucking my topup?
shouldnt the device make sure it uses wifi if wireless network is available?
No, you don't need to.
When you connect to a wi-fi connection, the 3G data will automatically switch off (logo on status bar will go away) and it will return when you switch wi-fi off.

what?
The phone will prioritize the WiFi connection over the 3G connection unless the WiFi is turned off, it's signal drops out(resulting in a disconnects), or you have the default still set for WiFi to turn off when the screen is off.
Am I right in thinking that although the 3g connection will kick in when the wifi signal is lost the phone will still continue looking for a wifi signal and therefore impact on the battery?

Once the WiFi signal it's connected to is lost, it will switch the data 3G connection back on. Once you're out of range of remembered WiFi networks, it does scan for new/known WiFi signals to automatically connect to(only in the case of known signals, it will not try to connect to unknown networks).
As far as impact on battery, I don't think it's much. Only one time has WiFi ever creeped up on my battery use meter and that was on a particularly light day. I still finished my work day at little over 70% battery. There's an app on the market called WiFi Toggle which can help you automatically manage the phones WiFi chip. For instance, one setting will let it turn the WiFi on for a second, scan for known networks and connect if it finds them. If it doesn't, it turns it back off.
That's as I thought, thanks for the confirmation. I'd really like something to make the android phones act like the nokias in this respect - only turn on a data connection when needed (ie when the browser is fired up) and also prioritise the connections such that if a pre programmed known wifi network is available it will connect to that but if not switch to 3g data. There is no scanning for wifi networks all the time.
Nice to know it doesn't seem to impact on the battery though and yes before anyone mentions it I am aware android devices are designed to be always connected

I've been saying this for a while too. I came from Nokia symbian phones where they initiated the data session only when needed, like opening the browser etc. Android does not do this, instead it keeps a data session on all the time. Anytime you see that 3g symbol on an android phone means its data session is open. This is why android gets such poor battery life across all models and manufacturers.
Take one day as a test and simulate your symbian use by turning off mobile data, and your battery life will sky rocket on your nexus. So really It's just a trade off to make knowing you're always connected vs on others like symbian you need to manually do something to open the connection.
Oh and WiFi gets so much better battery life over 3g on android.

Wifi stops working after being left for a while (still connected)

Having an issue with the Tab 2 where you go to pick it up and start browsing after it has been sitting around a while (not sure if the time matters, but it seems like after sitting for most of the day) and the wifi is still connected, but nothing works than needs data. It acts like it would if you had not internet connection. Toggling the wifi off and on will fix the issue and notificaitons and emails start pouring in.
Anyone else have this problem? I found a similar issue on the 7.7 forums but nobody reported a solution and I am not even sure if it would have worked on the Tab 2 anyways. I am thinking about making a script that toggles the wifi automatically if it detects it can't connect to the internet. But that is a little ridiculous needing to do that. It shouldn't be losing connection in the first place.
Hi Pirate
it's a bit depending on the ROM you have installed - but since Android 4 you have a quite reliable setting. The default behavior of Android devices is to deactivate the wifi connection when it goes to sleep.
Some ROMs don't recognize the disconnection and the switch/button still shows "Wifi on" although disconnected.
First step: go to settings / wifi settings, hit the menu button (top right three dots) and check the advanced settings.
Somewhat like "Keep WLAN active in standby" - set this to always.
That should solve it already under android 4.x
If this doesn't help, look into Play Store - search for "wifi keep alive". But for the SGT 2 you shouldn't need it
Greetz - Chris
It was already set to "Always" so I don't think that will help. I will look at that app to see what it does.

wifi turns off when not in use to save battery. I think it might be a default even if you have it set to always on.

The problem is that it never comes back on. Well it shows the wifi icon and the signal and everything but it just doesn't have any data connection. Any apps that use data act like wifi is off. The only way to get it to start working again is to toggle wifi or reboot. I also forgot to mention it is the stock ROM, only rooted. It got the OTA a few days ago too and it has happened since then.
You're not alone

It's the same effing stuff people suggest to every wifi glitch out there.
To people who think it's due to the wifi sleep policy: although I've set it to always, why would wifi not resume, after screen is turned on? It's not the wifi that gets disconnected, it's the internet (or the download speed) that stops working.
To people who suggest it's a power saving feature under low battery conditions: Sorry, I've tested it while charging and with full battery.
To people with the above two arguments: Connection to some routers works perfect with the phone. Like when I turn on the hotspot on another phone, the wifi works great. Also, wifi on the other phone from the same source (laptop used as internet access point) works well.
To people who suggest resetting the router or wifi on phone: The internet does start working again, but only for a few minutes. Even if the screen is turned on, the internet may stop working mid-download.
The actual situation is that the phone disconnects from the internet, but keeps showing a connection to wifi. Like I used connectify hotspot to create an access point, and after a few minutes, the phone moved from "connected clients" list to the "previously connected clients", even as the phone showed connected to wifi with even the download arrows blinking, but no internet (or download speed). This only happens with certain sources (of wifi). And other phones may work well with the same source.
I have tried (several times and in different orders and permutations) the following to no effect:
1. Resetting the router.
2. Resetting the wifi on laptop.
3. Resetting the wifi on phone.
4. Restarting the phone and laptop.
5. Static IPs, gateways and DNSs. (Even though the problem was not with connecting to wifi and even internet works momentarily after resetting wifi).
6. Turning off items controlling wireless network in wireless connection properties.
7. Turning off firewall.
Waiting for a savior.
I know this isn't super helpful but I had the same bug you describe on the previous version of carbon. When I updated to the latest it seems to have stopped.

Same issue. also using connectify and also tried all things you have described. If you find any solution please let me know.
I had the same problem on my Huawei Honor. You need to set static IP in wifi settings (when connecting to AP, press "show advanced settings").
Mine settings were:
IP adress: 192.168.1.75 (make sure other devices are not connected with this IP)
Gateway: 192.168.1.254 (it could be different. Use the same as you're using to connect to your router)
Network prefix length: 24
DNS 1: 8.8.8.8
DNS 2: 4.4.4.4
No option for static IP in connectify

1. I have had the exact same issue for (atleast) the past 2 years. Have survived by repeatedly turning wifi on and off.
2. I too use connectify. This issue doesnt seem to happen on every wifi connection (just like your case). Even more specifically, it seems to happen ONLY when I connect my phone to the hotspot created via my laptop (connectify).
3. Even when the internet is actually working, some apps do not seem to recognise that(take some time to realize it is working), while others are able to connect instantly. Specifially, whatsapp is unable to send/receive messages for about 1-2 mins, after which I receive a whole bunch of messages at once.
This does not seem to be an issue due to connectify as well. I have tried creating a hotspot from my laptop without using connectify as well, but unfortunately, nothing changed. Further, this does not happen when my phone connects to a hotspot created via connectify by some other pc. The wifi and internet work perfectly fine when connected to a hotspot created via my friends computer.
Further, this problem happens only when a mobile connects to the hotspot. Doesn't occur when another laptop/PC connects (not sure about tablets).
I have looked into every nook and cranny on the internet, explored every forum for any working solution, but have been unsuccessful. In fact, this is the first place where I saw the exact same problem as mine, and was wondering if you have found any solution to it .

I'm having the exact same prob on my ZTE Grand x V 970
It started when i had kitkat and i couldnt even "fix it" restarting the wifi, i had to reset the phone in order to have my wifi work for like 2-5 mins and then stops recieving data, tried to reconnect and stays on turning on wifi.. Now i changed to the stock Rom and the problem is still there but at least now i can "fix it" restarting the wifi connection until certain point.
Issue sharing internet with Connectify from PC
Go to:
Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center
On the left column, click on CHANGE ADAPTER SETTINGS.
You should be in: Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections by now.
Then click on: Microsoft Virtual Miniport Adapter and click on Properties, then click on the 'Configure' button in the 'Networking' tab. From this window, go to the 'Power Management' tab and uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'.
This works for me. Try this out
If this doesn't work further, you can try out mHotspot for the same purpose.
I've had the same issue, with the wifi saying it's connected even though it isn't.
This thread is 4 years old and this issue still hasn't been fixed. What a shame.
Same issue here on OnePlus 3 even after factory reset.
I have this same problem after the security patch Mid March to Jan 1, 2019. The WIFI doesn't show in the top status bar, but toggling wifi off/on fixes it till the next overnight. I did make one change to my wireless about that same time and that was moving the min connect speed from 6Mbps to 12Mbps to help with bandwidth issues being cause by devices using low speeds and having several SSID broadcast. My S7 and Tab A both work fine - so I think it was something in the security patch.

Wifi and Bluetooth not able to work simultaneously in MM

So I've validated that often (but not always) if Bluetooth is turned on, then wifi will not work on my N5. I'm almost positive that this began with Marshmallow. I am sure that it is not working in 6.0.1. I'm running Cataclysm/ElemX latest 6.0.1 versions.
I've been keeping Bluetooth on all the time for the last 4-5 months to sync up with my Garmin Vivoactive. I notice now that when I get home from work, where wifi should normally work just fine, I have to turn BT off in order for wifi connectivity to work. Settings shows strong signal and connection to wifi home network, but throughput is either at 0 or very slow (i.e. 2-3k per second).
I see that someone raised an issue on this back in October. If you see this on your device, please add a comment to the issue:

Tab 2 rooted w/cwm CM11 since forever see IMG.
Wifi goes out, have to toggle off/on then it stays on for a while again. Sometimes its on for 30 to 45 mins and sometimes it cuts out after 10 mins.
Could wifi doohicky be worn out?
No battery saver app running, just greenify. Tab has minimal apps running and 2 games, have not added apps for over a year.

Solved/ :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
My issue was not the tablet or OS/firmware, the problem was my WiFi router.
Running a netgear N600 DB WiFi router with multiple devices connected via Ethernet cable and WiFi signal throughout the house, all other devices worked properly with no issues whatsoever when it came to internet access.
Yet tablet kept disconnecting or loosing signal and would have to toggle WiFi off/on to get it started again. Never suspected router because all other devices worked properly with no signal strength loss or degradation.
After monkeying around with tab with no solution I decided to restart router, had nothing to lose, whatever, and as soon as I restarted router issue was gone, turn on WiFi and it stays on until I turn it off, even if tablet is idle for days, I wake it and WiFi connects immediately.
Now the router was having some signal issue with just the tab and nothing else,I also have two other devices connected that are similar in age and technology to this tab and these showed no signal issues whatsoever.
So the moral of the story is, don't discount your router just because everything else is working properly with the router and network.
Now my tab has to see a therapist because I called it "a piece of $#it" and it wasn't even the tabs fault.
