Shaky Wi-Fi - Touch Pro, Fuze General

I've noticed that my WiFi connection is unstable regardless of which ROM I'm using. I'm sitting less than 10 feet from my router and the signal is excellent yet my Fuze WiFi won't connect...I can't update 2.1 weather, can't open a page in Opera and IE.
Anyone out there with a solid WiFi connection every time they use it? Which ROM are you on? What are your settings/edits?
I'm desperate to find a solution to this since having a built in WiFi is one of the perks of the Fuze. And I don't want to be held hostage by AT$T ridiculous data plan.

i'm using EnergyRom Jan 27th build 21889. I've never had any problems with wifi for any EnergyRom builds i use. I don't really set anything up, i just turn wifi on, and just enter the WPA passkey and it's done, it's only a one time setup, everytime i turn wifi on it'll automatically connect.
There are tools like Wifi Monster etc that can show you the strength of the wifi signal, as well as tools that gives you options to set up an advanced profile (I think it's called Wifi Profile).......
do a search for Wifi in PPCWarez and you'll find what you need.

Thanks for the reply. I'm also on EnergyRom Jan 27th build 21889....I've actually been an avid follower of NRG Roms but have never had a consistent WiFi connection. I really don't know where I'm going wrong. I've been using the same WiFi for the past 3 years. I didn't have WiFi connection problems with RoMeo's Rom on my Tilt or on my Hermes. Just would like to have a dependable WiFi connection. I'm pretty sure it's not the Rom..just curious if I had things configured properly.

I am also having problems with the Wi-Fi connection on my HTC Touch Pro. It is very unstable and unreliable -it flies for 10-20 seconds, and then hangs. The problem persists with different routers. I am using the stock HTC ROM.

Performance Mode
Hi guys,
have yo tried switching WiFi mode from "Battery Saving" to "Performance"?
Start/Setting/Connections/Wifi icon

The same wi fi problem for me: it recognizes the network, it asks for the pass, but it doesn't connect.
i'm two meters from the router... any suggestion?

Try...
Change your wifi settings to preformance first.
Things that affect WiFi not particular to your phone:
1. Bluetooth on and active (same frequencies) on your phone as well as others
2. Other Routers (esp. if you live in an apartment)
3. Running Microwaves ovens
4. Other RF devices in the 2.4GHz range. (i.e. wireless keyboards, mice, novelty devices, etc.)
The only step to do is change your router at home to another channel and try again. If you are connecting outside your home, then you are at the mercy of the provider.

Polaris: WLAN problems?

Hi all,
I recently bought my HTC Polaris. It's the first wireless device I have, so I also bought a WiFi router to test it. I do not have any previous experience with WiFi on WinMobile, so the problems I am having could just be due to my newbie-ness...
I initially set my WLan router to WPA-PSK. I was able to get my Polaris connected, but at random times and repeatedly the device would stop receiving data (using IE, Google Maps...) with no apparent reasons. The wlan was still shown as connected in . At other times, it was unbearably slow. Sometimes it was difficult to reconnect after that.
Now I set my router to unprotected WLan, just for the sake of test. The connection with my Polaris seems more stable. I will keep testing.
In both situations there is something that puzzles me. In Settings-Connections-Wireless Lan, Main tab, it shows:
Tx speed = 54 Mbps
Rx speed = 1 Mbps
Also in the Advanced tab, the status is always shown as "Associated to the network" ("Associato alla rete"). I never saw "Connected to the network" ("Connesso alla rete") here.
Is this right? Did anyone else experience problems with the Polaris WLan? Is it possible that it works ok with no encryption, and doesn't with WPA? Please help!
*update*: while I was typing I was looking closely at the Rx speed. It seems to jump anywhere from 1 to 54 Mbps (but mostly stays at 1). I did not move the Polaris during this test. The signal strenght is good. The WLan adapter of my PC (where I'm typing looking at my Polaris screen) shows it as "excellent" and the connection pc-router is absolutely fast and stable.
I have no clue of what it can be.

WLAN Problems
This may not be related but I am managing to use a Netgear Router with WEP, however I do experience a lot of drop outs but more importantly I can't get any connections with the phone unless the battery saver setting is set for max performance. The phone also gets quite warm after 15 minutes operation on this setting.
Stuart
as enterpryse has suggested you could go to settings>connections> wireless Lan> Power mode and move the cursor to best performance.
let me know if anything changes.

I'd say this is the best bet too.
But if you still having trouble try to reconfig your router allowing basically anyone regardless of topology to connect with it. And try using your pc simultaneously to see if it’s the router.
It could also be certain pages that you browse or maybe you router is updating too frequently I had that problem the other day because but kept updating my router for me.
And how long does you device take before it get quite hot? would i be out of line if i said maybe its because you're insulating the device with your hand? (I know the device needs to be held lol but that might be the only answer to your problem unless it’s an excessive heat problem then I would consider contacting HTC / the battery manufacturer / processor manufacturer)
Well, I'll be...
I kept trying to duplicate the problem. I set my WiFi router back to WPA as it was before when I was getting problems. Same PSK.
But after the first bad experiences (and my previous post), no more problems. The Rx speed is usually 42 to 48 Mbps now. It looks like this was the indicator that something was wrong in my first attempts, when I always got Rx=1. At 42 or more, everyting goes fast: Opera, Fast GPS, Google Maps... And I did not experience any more connection drops, data flow hangs, or slowness in connecting to the WLan.
The WLan router was already working fine, since I was already connected to it with my pc. I cannot explain why it didn't almost work and it's working fine now. The only thing I changed was the WLan channel. Could this be an explanation?

Of course, are there any other wlans around you? If they are on the same channel your router goes down with the speed till a stable connection is established.
Even if you have other wireless device e.x mouse, headset, keyboard. They often transmit on the 2,4GHz band an interfere with wlans.
Can't even load wireless mode!
I've just received my Touch Cruise and have started setting things up. I'm a previous owner of the Hermes so I know my way around the device. Or so I thought...
Using Comm Manager to start up wireless lan, when I click on the button, it thinks for a while but doesn't load up WLAN. The button stays in the "off" setting. Tried pressing a few times, no luck.
Tried switching off all other connection types and just switching on WLAN - still doesn't work. Tried using the hotlink via "Wireless LAN" icon through settings/connections to turn WLAN on. Still no luck. Resetting makes no difference.
Phone is otherwise working brilliantly. Looks like a driver issue, as I had a similar problem from time to time on the Hermes with Black ROM. Any ideas on what else I could try?
le_paulo
"Resetting makes no difference."
Did u do a soft or hard reset?
@Jackster - both soft and hard reset tried. No difference. But after the hard reset I re-installed Goodlink which threw up an error message "Communication port WIFI is locked down". Which suggests to me that WLAN is visible but access has been restricted somehow.
The question is why (??) and how to undo it...
Nothing a cooked firmware can't fix
Meantime, if anyone knows registry settings I should check to do some basic diagnostics, I'd appreciate it.

Same problem here. Tx = 54mbit Rx = 1 mbit. Sometimes it works ok (with Rx 24-54mbit) but most of time there are huge drops so i cant use wlan at all.
My Nokia N95 works excellent at the same settings with same router.
My polaris wlan battery is set to "Max Performance".
Any clue?
weird
This is the second XDA Orbit 2 (Polaris) I've had in a week. I returned the first one because of WLAN problems. Exactly the same with this one.
I have a Netgear DG834GT, WPA-PSK encryption set to 'auto 108mbps' on channel 6. As other posters here, tried no encryption, changing channels, g only, g & b, as well as all the other suggestions on here. All I got was Rx=1, screen icon showing connected and no web access etc.
Then I noticed that my Orbit 2 mac address appeared on the Wireless Station Access list in my router wireless settings. I clicked on the Add button to add my XDA to the Trusted Wireless Station list (but Access Control was NOT switched on) and EUREKA, it started working, but not very reliably. Surely this shouldn't be necessary. I have had an XDA Orbit for a year with absolutely no problems, so I know my around the new one. There must be a problem with the Orbit 2 - surely we can't all be wrong?

priotize w-lan for internet connetions

-Does anyone know how to priotize w-lan for internet connections?
It seem that my phone always uses the mobile connections (GSM, 3G etc).
In menu for connections where internet connections can be created, I can't find anyting about w-lan.
This is something I've been meaning to ask about while I wait for the Fuze. By way of background, I have a Cingular 8525 with the original (WM5) ROM, and it drives me nuts using it at home. I only get EDGE inside my house, but the stupid phone persists in making an EDGE data connection instead of using the nice, fast Wifi connection that I just enabled. I use NoData to make sure it doesn't connect via EDGE or 3G, and then half the time it says it says that it can't connect -- even though the icon says that it is connected!! The only way I can reliably connect via Wifi is to go briefly into and out of flight mode, then turn on Wifi before connecting.
I'm really, really hoping that the situation is better with the Touch Pro/Fuze. Can anyone reassure me on that?
it should be accessing wifi first by default i believe...unless other connection is already connected
Hello!
Start first the WiFi Connection and then the Internet Explorer or Opera.
pjo12345
There's this stupid thing with wlan connections in WM - if connection type is set to 'Work', you can browse through files on other computers in (W)LAN at home, but any Internet connection wll be realised through GRPS/3G. To make it connect to the Internet using WiFi, you need to switch wifi type back to 'Internet'.
Maybe that's the thing?
Is there a way how to setup that the WiFi is connected to both (work AND internet)? I never saw WiFi connected only to work network... I assume there is no way but why not to ask ;-)
I know that many others have problem with that, but I didn't find any solution yet...
Because when I set it as work, my Exchange sync is working but no Internet, and when I switch to Internet, opera and QuickpGPS is working, but no Exchange sync (it is trying to open VPN connection because I need to go though inside address to the server because certificates and of course it cannot get it). Or I need somehow set that no VPN will be dealed on this WiFi network...
I need something like BOTH or Auto option.
It seems to be switching from Wlan to G / 3G / H when the signal is not that great. Mostly with the weather tab and Opera. Quick GPS works fine. The way I make sure it is on the internet through wlan is to shutdown the telephone and keep the wlan on with comm manager. The disadvantage is that anyone calling will be heading to your voicemail. Another option is to use the "Nodata" program, en disable to internet connections.
On Touch Pro, I usually just go to COMM MANAGER and switch on wifi and switch off data connection. It is only a couple of quick steps and saves battery, since you don't need both on, if you only want to use wifi.
I am sure there must be a more seamless solution, but I like easy fixes.

No it is not better. Turning on WiFi is not enough. It will continue to use the cellular data connection until you manually turn it off. This wouldn't be so bad, but in my experience I've had to push the button to turn off the cellular connection multiple times before it would actually do so. What would be really nice is if WM could seamlessly switch from the cellular network to WiFi, with zero user interaction, just like the iPhone does.
I got an other problem with wifi. When I establish a wifi-connection and pull my mail the ppc still connect with a data-canection and didn't use the wifi. My kaiser used the wifi-connection for that.

I wrote the original post before I had a chance to try it for myself. I've had a Fuze for three weeks now, and it works fine for me. I turn on wifi and the Fuze uses wifi. I turn it off and it goes back to normal wireless. (I did do the registry edits to turn on the HSDPA stuff in the connections tab and enabled the modified connection icons in the menu bar. I don't know if that had any effect on this issue or not, but it does what I would expect now.)

Help please, Fuze Wifi issues

Anyone else having trouble with wifi? I have a connection to my home network and have used the 10 digit hex wep key. Even in the same room as the router (Linksys/Cisco), the signal strength is only about 50% and I can't even open a page in Opera.
SSID shows correctly
Mode: Infrastructure
Tx Rate: 54Mbps
RX Rate: 1 Mbps <-- is this the issue?
Channel 1
Advanced status shows: Associated to network.
Any ideas?

A call to HTC yielded nothing. I'm at my wits-end. Just turning wifi makes it almost impossible to load a website, I do better with just my marginal 3G service even though the wifi shows connected. Do you think a hard reset might help??

I'd also reset the wireless router too. Another possibility is there might be compatibility issues between the router and fuze. what router do you use? i'm using a linksys router and it's working fine. Obviously the signal the phone gets isn't as good as my Thinkpad's signal, but it does the job fine. I'm really enjoying this 3G speed, so I don't really use wifi that much - saves power!
only wifi problem i had was when i put in my wep key it rejected it the first time, and when i made it reconnect everything was fine. but at first it said my network was unavail.
Okay, try this - it's what worked for me:
Go to Settings -> Connections -> Wireless LAN.
On the bottom, choose the Power Mode tab.
Move the slider all the way over to Best Performance.
Fixed me right up.

I found that in a windows mobile support forum as a stated solution for anothe HTC project and tried it also, it worked!
Thanks!
I'm having problems connecting to a WPA encrypted router and it's driving me crazy.
It just hangs and hangs and hangs, but never connects. If I put in an incorrect pass, or bad info- it immediately will fail to connect, but with the correct info- it will continue to attempt to connect, but never finish.
I've changed it to "Best Performance" but that made no difference.
^ Happened to me also. Turned out that I didn't add the Fuze's MAC address to my router's allowed devices list in wireless security.
I'm having the same problems as OP. I'm using the Fuze straight out from the box and I've tried adjusting the power settings as suggested and still no luck. I've also hard resetted to no avail. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
I don't have any issues with my wireless network, but I don't use an WPA encrypted router.
I have mine set to MAC address, and it work without issues.
I have a WEP encrypted router and it shows that I am connected. Do I need to set something up in settings -> connection -> connection? All I have are Media Net and "Work" listed. Seems like no one else is having this problem =/
I'm having a similar problem with my phone. I set my phone to maximum signal and the battery is just taking a hit. I can barely get a signal although it does work. I can't get the "free" ringtone to download off of their website, but no big loss. Wondering if the 3G/Edge would be a better bet.
Im also having a problem connecting to my network. it shows that im connected but doesnt now connect to the internet in internet explorer and other online apps. ive tryed...
restarting the router.
hard reset.
changing the power settings to high performance.
disabled hidden proxy as suggested on another thread.
exchanged my phone after being suggested by htc.
im using a linksys router. is it a compatibility issue?
this is driving me crazy; why are so many people having this problem?
I dont know if this goes here, but reading your problems, I think mine is a little different.
Where I live, in Mexico, almost everyone has internet service with the same Isp, who gives 2wire dlsmodem/routers with only a 10 digits wep encription (for default), the problem I have is that whenever I try to connect to any router (I've only tried with these) it asks for the wep key, but no matter what I put it always says that is incorrect. I tried disabling the encription and IT DOES work, but I dont control the other routers wich I want to connect to..
Any Ideas?
I am having the exact same problem. I could connect to an unsecured hotspot but can not connect to my WEP protected linksys/cisco router. It appears that linksys/cisco seems to keep popping up in this thread from folks having problem. Out of curiosity what model number of linksys/cisco do you have? Has anyone figured out a solution yet?
Go to configure wireless networks than go to the network adapters tab, click the first one IEEE 802.11 bg .... and make sure its set to user server assigned IP address.
Same problem here! tx @ 54 mbps rx @ 1mbps, and it doesn't change therefore i'm getting about 5meters distance before my connection becomes unstable (WTF). Using WPA2-PSK and set to performance.
P.S. all router incompatible comments are incorrect. There's a spec for .11 b/g and all hardware should be using this therefore it should work it's either a hardware fault or some settings aren't working correctly. BTW for me it's the same prob whether changing the ROM or radio, it doesn't change...
Same problem...never resolved? Fuze $200
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4213175&postcount=19
Solution
I may have a solution, it worked for me on 3 routers so far and dramatically increased reception over distance and connection stability.
Open your WiFi router settings, go to advanced settings and look for something like Beacon Period. If I got it right, this is the interval between position updates and default setting should be 100.
If you lower this number, it will update your devices position more accurately and get you better stability.
Be warned it will probably marginally increase AP radiation and decrease bandwidth of the wifi connection by a percent or two, however I didn't notice any difference but a huge stability increase.
I am using Beacon Period 50 at home but anything from 50-75 works for me.
Enjoy

WIFI problems related to WEP (and other encryptions) is hardware or software? HELP!!

I have spent the last week at work more focused on the XDA forum than what I am actually paid to do here at work...
I am so unproductive now, I am actually willing to donate to the forum if the forum can produce results, so that I can finally get back to work in peace!
I have thoroughly read through most relevant posts. I cannot find any specific post that solves the problem I have, so I decided to post anew, against some suggestions...
Anyway, the problem is that,
I cannot get any of my applications that are internet-dependent (skype, mail, weather etc) to access the WIFI connection that "apparently" looks connected, IF WEP (or any other encryption, for that matter) is enabled on the WIFI Router.
OK, what I mean by "apparently" is that the Wifi signal appears at its fullest, the lollipop on top of the screen with arrows is there, and even if I go into start>settings>Connections>wifi, it says that (my particular internet connection, named) Linksys is "connected".
The problem is, with wep encryption (and any other encryptions), it has worked once or twice. I cannot remember if that was before or after the Hard-SPL and radio downgrade (to get it unlocked) but ever since that "beginners luck" connection, I have had no success with connecting these apps to internet through WIFI.
First of all, I cannot figure out why, but I can connect by
1/ GPRS (the only available here in Vietnam - no 3G /HSDPA yet),
2/ with open connection and no encryptions of any kind by the WIFI router, my WIFI and Raphael connects fine. Data transfer happens.
The reality is, it is not very realistic for me to ask all others at work to make their WIFI connection with no security or encryptions..
So, having explained the situation, in a nutshell, problem is that by enabling excryption like WEP, the connection does not allow me to use WIFI on my raphael.
Is this hardware or software on Raphael side? or is it WIFI router side?
Other devices, including my TyTn II connects fine with WEP, which rules out the router, right?
I cannot remember if the problem started before or after OliPro unlock...
If it worked before but not now, there is of course always the possibility of hardware mulfunction, but since it works with no encryption, I am guessing it is hardware?
I have gone to other WIFI networks that are healthy, with other hand held devices happily connected to WIF, but nope...not me...
Any ideas guys?

Make sure that Wi-Fi is turned off.
Open your Comm Manager | Settings | Wireless LAN.
When you're in the Wireless LAN Settings panel, select Power Mode.
Slide the selector to Best Performance.
Tap OK & when you're back in the Comm Manager, turn on the Wi-Fi adapter.
Setup your work connection & see if your internet connections work.
One thing to note, while this has resolved my connectivity problems, the settings are not always saved for some unknown reason.
So, be prepared to key in the settings again.
I resorted to everything , not leaving anything to chance, and did many things at once.
It is now fixed, it seems, but at great cost in terms of time, and I cannot be sure which one of these was actually helpful.
But I hard-reset the TP, as well as updating the firmware on both the modem and the WIFI router, and then did hard reset on them too...
I cannot judge on what turned out to be true on other peoples' TP, but for me at least, for both TyTn II and Touch Pro I am currently using, setting connection from "internet" to> "Work" did not help at all....
Thanks anyways...

Wifi stops working after being left for a while (still connected)

Having an issue with the Tab 2 where you go to pick it up and start browsing after it has been sitting around a while (not sure if the time matters, but it seems like after sitting for most of the day) and the wifi is still connected, but nothing works than needs data. It acts like it would if you had not internet connection. Toggling the wifi off and on will fix the issue and notificaitons and emails start pouring in.
Anyone else have this problem? I found a similar issue on the 7.7 forums but nobody reported a solution and I am not even sure if it would have worked on the Tab 2 anyways. I am thinking about making a script that toggles the wifi automatically if it detects it can't connect to the internet. But that is a little ridiculous needing to do that. It shouldn't be losing connection in the first place.
Hi Pirate
it's a bit depending on the ROM you have installed - but since Android 4 you have a quite reliable setting. The default behavior of Android devices is to deactivate the wifi connection when it goes to sleep.
Some ROMs don't recognize the disconnection and the switch/button still shows "Wifi on" although disconnected.
First step: go to settings / wifi settings, hit the menu button (top right three dots) and check the advanced settings.
Somewhat like "Keep WLAN active in standby" - set this to always.
That should solve it already under android 4.x
If this doesn't help, look into Play Store - search for "wifi keep alive". But for the SGT 2 you shouldn't need it
Greetz - Chris
It was already set to "Always" so I don't think that will help. I will look at that app to see what it does.

wifi turns off when not in use to save battery. I think it might be a default even if you have it set to always on.

The problem is that it never comes back on. Well it shows the wifi icon and the signal and everything but it just doesn't have any data connection. Any apps that use data act like wifi is off. The only way to get it to start working again is to toggle wifi or reboot. I also forgot to mention it is the stock ROM, only rooted. It got the OTA a few days ago too and it has happened since then.
You're not alone

It's the same effing stuff people suggest to every wifi glitch out there.
To people who think it's due to the wifi sleep policy: although I've set it to always, why would wifi not resume, after screen is turned on? It's not the wifi that gets disconnected, it's the internet (or the download speed) that stops working.
To people who suggest it's a power saving feature under low battery conditions: Sorry, I've tested it while charging and with full battery.
To people with the above two arguments: Connection to some routers works perfect with the phone. Like when I turn on the hotspot on another phone, the wifi works great. Also, wifi on the other phone from the same source (laptop used as internet access point) works well.
To people who suggest resetting the router or wifi on phone: The internet does start working again, but only for a few minutes. Even if the screen is turned on, the internet may stop working mid-download.
The actual situation is that the phone disconnects from the internet, but keeps showing a connection to wifi. Like I used connectify hotspot to create an access point, and after a few minutes, the phone moved from "connected clients" list to the "previously connected clients", even as the phone showed connected to wifi with even the download arrows blinking, but no internet (or download speed). This only happens with certain sources (of wifi). And other phones may work well with the same source.
I have tried (several times and in different orders and permutations) the following to no effect:
1. Resetting the router.
2. Resetting the wifi on laptop.
3. Resetting the wifi on phone.
4. Restarting the phone and laptop.
5. Static IPs, gateways and DNSs. (Even though the problem was not with connecting to wifi and even internet works momentarily after resetting wifi).
6. Turning off items controlling wireless network in wireless connection properties.
7. Turning off firewall.
Waiting for a savior.
I know this isn't super helpful but I had the same bug you describe on the previous version of carbon. When I updated to the latest it seems to have stopped.

I had similar issue with my aTab Phone 4 and TP-Link TL-WR941ND (OpenWRT)
After disabling WMM capability in the router the problem disappeared!

Same issue. also using connectify and also tried all things you have described. If you find any solution please let me know.
I had the same problem on my Huawei Honor. You need to set static IP in wifi settings (when connecting to AP, press "show advanced settings").
Mine settings were:
IP adress: 192.168.1.75 (make sure other devices are not connected with this IP)
Gateway: 192.168.1.254 (it could be different. Use the same as you're using to connect to your router)
Network prefix length: 24
DNS 1: 8.8.8.8
DNS 2: 4.4.4.4
No option for static IP in connectify

1. I have had the exact same issue for (atleast) the past 2 years. Have survived by repeatedly turning wifi on and off.
2. I too use connectify. This issue doesnt seem to happen on every wifi connection (just like your case). Even more specifically, it seems to happen ONLY when I connect my phone to the hotspot created via my laptop (connectify).
3. Even when the internet is actually working, some apps do not seem to recognise that(take some time to realize it is working), while others are able to connect instantly. Specifially, whatsapp is unable to send/receive messages for about 1-2 mins, after which I receive a whole bunch of messages at once.
This does not seem to be an issue due to connectify as well. I have tried creating a hotspot from my laptop without using connectify as well, but unfortunately, nothing changed. Further, this does not happen when my phone connects to a hotspot created via connectify by some other pc. The wifi and internet work perfectly fine when connected to a hotspot created via my friends computer.
Further, this problem happens only when a mobile connects to the hotspot. Doesn't occur when another laptop/PC connects (not sure about tablets).
I have looked into every nook and cranny on the internet, explored every forum for any working solution, but have been unsuccessful. In fact, this is the first place where I saw the exact same problem as mine, and was wondering if you have found any solution to it .

I'm having the exact same prob on my ZTE Grand x V 970
It started when i had kitkat and i couldnt even "fix it" restarting the wifi, i had to reset the phone in order to have my wifi work for like 2-5 mins and then stops recieving data, tried to reconnect and stays on turning on wifi.. Now i changed to the stock Rom and the problem is still there but at least now i can "fix it" restarting the wifi connection until certain point.
Issue sharing internet with Connectify from PC
Go to:
Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center
On the left column, click on CHANGE ADAPTER SETTINGS.
You should be in: Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections by now.
Then click on: Microsoft Virtual Miniport Adapter and click on Properties, then click on the 'Configure' button in the 'Networking' tab. From this window, go to the 'Power Management' tab and uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'.
This works for me. Try this out
If this doesn't work further, you can try out mHotspot for the same purpose.
I've had the same issue, with the wifi saying it's connected even though it isn't.
This thread is 4 years old and this issue still hasn't been fixed. What a shame.
Same issue here on OnePlus 3 even after factory reset.
I have this same problem after the security patch Mid March to Jan 1, 2019. The WIFI doesn't show in the top status bar, but toggling wifi off/on fixes it till the next overnight. I did make one change to my wireless about that same time and that was moving the min connect speed from 6Mbps to 12Mbps to help with bandwidth issues being cause by devices using low speeds and having several SSID broadcast. My S7 and Tab A both work fine - so I think it was something in the security patch.
