Has anyone noticed that when you're shooting videos in the 5x mode you're not actually recording video from the 5x lens. You're recording from the 2x lens digitally zoomed in.
You can test this for yourself by putting your finger over the top lens while recording at 5x and see for yourself
Another fun fact for anyone who didn't know is the 5x lens is actually a 3.7x optical zoom. So if you want the very best quality photo you should pinch the cam to 3.7x as beyond that is digital
I'm using software 11.0.9 Global

I thought you can actually record video from 3.7x lens.
And fact that its "just" 3.7 is well known.
But very surprised about video recording. Real shame, wonder what it would look like.
That is true for the stock cam app. But if you install the opencamera app that is on this forum adapted to the mi note 10 you can use rhe 5x camera for recording video, as well as manual controls for focus and exposure, it works really well

Yeah, this Open Camera for Mi Note 10 helps a lot. But wonder, if anyone got it working in video mode using Gcam?

Well, I didn't buy this phone for the camera or the video recording.
But recorded a video using the Gcam app but was totally disappointed by the quality of the sound especially.
I wonder what is your approach in this aspect.
I use cinema fv-5
The camera for recording is very bad for me. Even with EIS enabled, using GCam or whatever. It's not on the same level as the pictures.

Our phone is still plagued by the low light bug. If you want to capture a video in something other than perfect lighting conditions, you might want to go with manual exposure.
I use Footej camera (with camera 2 API enabled) with manual exposure.
I never set shutter speed slower than 1/25, to avoid getting 14fps.
Same thing can be done with Open Camera.
As far as sound goes, I'm one of the lucky ones, no bug there.
Cheers
Hi,
So the Nokia 7 plus is supposed to have a Secondary telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom. But there is no way(not that I am aware of) in the Nokia camera app to use that lens.
There is a button for 2x zoom in the camera interface. But when you click that the secondary camera is not used. It is digitally zooms with the primary lens.
I was curious if the telephoto lens is actually being used or not, so i clicked different pictures with 1x and 2x zoom and when I compared the info of the pictures, both the 1x as well as 2x pictures were using the same 12.2MP/f1.8 lens.
simpler confirmation, switch 2x button and put your thumb on second lens
This makes the secondary lens just a decoration if you can't use it. (unless for the portrait shots, which I don't think is very convenient, but that's another story).
Am I missing something here? Is there a way to use the optical zoom features or is Nokia missing so something.
I have attached pictures I took.

It indeed uses second lens when you click 1x button. The metadata is added by camera software. If what you say is true, it's just a bug in the camera software where it just stamps the first lens info on all photos.

@spark25 The camera app has been using only the primary camera for me since I bought the device, and 2x mode is digital zoom. Even in the latest camera update. The only place where telephoto activates is the portrait (bokeh) mode.
Maybe they will utilize it in Pie, as it includes multi-camera api so there could be smooth transition between the two camera streams.
Edit: It does use the telephoto camera lens when there is a good lighting.

Try putting your thumb on the secondary lens when zooming.

Yes, and more solid confirmation :highfive:
Noisy shots on bokeh mode
Can someone confirm if pictures taken from the bokeh mode turn out too noisy and pixelated? The picture is very grainy and loses everything on zooming in.
The tele Lens only activates under certain conditions, when it can focus on far objects with good lighting otherwise it will use the normal lens with smaller aperture.
The secondary camera only works under certain conditions and I can confirm that if you your place the finger in front of it it just digitally zooms. It probably works only in good lighting.

The 2x Tele Lens only works when there's a good amount of light is available. (Since, photos taken with 2x Lens is bad at dark)
However, there's a trick that works sometimes:
Point your camera with with 2x Zoom at a bright white spot(area) or a bright white wall, the software will automatically switch into 2x Tele lens.
Keep in mind, using 2x Lens at dark doesn't give good results. The photos quality is worse at dark with 2x Lens (because of grainy and dark pictures)
So I just received my OP 7 Pro. I love it to this point, though I am still evaluating whether I can adjust to the curved screen. But my question is about the telephoto lens:
We know that the lens is actually a 12 MP 2.2x telephoto lens. The 8 MP 3x pictures the OP camera app produces is a bit of cropping and software zooming. Is there a way - either in the OP camera app itself, GCAM, or some other trick to use the lens as it is actually a designed? A 12 MP telephoto picture at 2.2x zoom?
Thanks...

i found this issue discussed in several articles: (I can't post a link yet since I'm new, but searching for this should get you there and explain what I'm talking about...

It crops the 12mp/2.2x zoom image to output an equivalent 8mp/3x zoom image. Just look at the differences in zoom between the portrait mode and the regular "3x" zoom option. Both are using the same lens.

And hence my question. Is there a way to capture the true 12 mp 2.2x zoom image without the OP "magic" of making it 3x zoom. Maybe I'd prefer to crop to a different area of the 12 mp photo?
Just wondering. But I'd like maximum flexibility in camera shooting options...
I know that it will be 2.2x with gcam, or with portrait mode in the oneplus app. I haven't used gcam for a while so I can't find you the latest links and downloads. But hope this info would help
Has anyone come across any detailed review / analysis of the main len's image quality when zoomed in? I'm a bit concerned it might not perform as well as other cameras that have a tele lens that starts at 2x or 3x optical zoom. The tele lens on the N20U doesn't kick in until 5x optical zoom (or I think there was a bug where it doesn't kick in until 10x zoom?)
It's a digital zoom. What do you think?

2x - so, so. 4x - clearly digital and pixelated (especially, when recording videos), 5x - great (both video and photo), 10x - very good, almost like optical, 20x - pixelated, not good for serious things, 50x - just for fun, pixelated artwork.
I m highly disappointed as I thought everything up to 5x should be optical. 5x is great but sometimes we just need 2x.
I am also disappointed in 108mpx camera as no optical zoom/ultrawide is available in this option plus image quality is worse than standard 12mpx camera. So not sure why Samsung did like this.
The same thing with video: we get ultrawide/optical zoom only in 30fps mode. No ultrawide/optical zoom in 60fps mode, only digital zoom, which is very disappointing.
However, putting these issues aside, both photo and video cameras are just great, pictures are crisp, quality is very good even during night time.
I wonder if it would be possible to unlock optical zoom/ultrawide with 60fps mode...
Yes I already know even 30x zoom does not get quality photos. But zooming is not always about getting quality photos. For example S22 Ultra can be used to recognize objects faraway for human eye. Most of xiaomi or oppo devices with 5x optical zoom cam can zoom in to 120x.
I have tried many camera apps that would support pixel 7 pro till 45x but not beyond that. Is there any good third party camera app or gcam mod which I can use for 100x zoom?
P.S: I don't expect good post photo processing in the app, just zooming

Not sure about apps but have you thought about a physical zoom lens for your phone??
