Went on a 180 mile trip today through SoCal and I was stunned at how good my GPS is now working. I'd done some tests locally, but never far enough of a drive to consider the results of any significance. Today, I headed east from the San Fernando Valley, through Pasadena, out to San Bernardino, then north through the Pacheco Pass into Hesperia in the high desert. From city to boonies and from about 350 feet elevation to over 3,500. My Cappy got a lock within seconds while sitting in my driveway and never once dropped lock the whole way there and back. Watching the screen the position marker remained steady on the road and did not wander at all. GPS is important to me and I finally have the performance I was getting on my Tilt 2. Yes, I had to go to a custom ROM to get it (Andromeda 1.2), but it runs so well on so many levels that I'm OK with that. Screw stock Froyo (which I tried along with Cog 4.x and GPS was mediocre at best on both).
I drove about 175 miles today using it, and never lost a lock also... I was using my girlfriends phone with stock 2.2. Was accurate to 10 meters whole trip... Had never had anything close to that before upgrade

Mine works good on any rom as long as I don't put the phone in my lap. Seems that the antenna gets a weak signal if placed back down and gets the dreaded large blue circle and looses accuracy. If I hold the phone up though it is balls on accurate.

Stock, I could lose GPS by just flipping the visor down. Today, I had the phone in my car mount, I put it on the seat at one point, put it to my head to answer a call...didn't lose lock once. All while playing MP3s via BT through the radio.
Im on stock 2.1 and my GPS has always worked fine in my car. I have trouble getting a lock indoors. I went on a 7 hour drive Thursday and didn't lose a lock once.
I wonder if some peoples GPS's are just junk and its the luck of the draw.

That may be for some, but I've had stock Froyo and Cog 4.1 on this same phone and neither had the GPS work as well as it does on Andromeda.

I was offroad at the time.
Mine works pretty well most of the time.. seems to have a slight 'drifing' issue when stopped tho.. say at a stop light.. kinda strange..
hate to poop on the whiner party, but stock 2.1 and now stock 2.2 have worked as expected. totally. this is a gnarly phone.
FireFly is by far the best results I have ever had with GPS...locks super quick and stays!
It seems a lot of the Captivates' GPS, like mine, worked great when the new phone was used for the first 2 to 3 weeks, then it would degrade. Load a new rom on the phone and again it would work fine for 2 to 3 weeks then deteriorate again. I'm always interested in knowing how long the current rom has been installed and how much the GPS has been utilized. The fact that it worked good when new, makes me think the hardware is not the problem. I'm no programmer but I always wondered if the deterioration was the result of some "file" that grew in size as the GPS was utilized. And, as the "file" grew, time/power requirements increased causing the GPS to deteriorate. How could it ever work correctly if it is a hardware issue?

Oh, well, then I guess your singular experience negates that of the many other users whose GPS has been total crap. It must be all their fault and not the device.
At one point I had 3 Captivates in my possession and all had stock Eclair, Froyo, Cog 4.x and Andromeda on them at various times. This was typical of their GPS performance (the phone with Andromeda is on the left).
I've had fairly good gps performance but I'm not picky. However, in the last couple days it won't get a lock no matter what..just flashes. I'm not that picky, but I don't like that it doesn't even get a lock
My first captivate, bought in September, was exchanged at Best Buy on day 30. The GPS on stock eclair never was very stable from day 1, slow to lock, very unreliable on the move much of the time, although not always.
My second captivate had very good GPS on stock eclair. Not perfect, but fast lock and rarely wandered, for three months. Then one day, out of the blue, it turned into my first captivate. I factory reset it. No joy. I exchanged it at ATT warranty center, told them the GPS wasn't working.
The third captivate GPS on stock eclair was an order of magnitude better than the second one ever was. Locks instantly, indoors or out, always good to 5 meters no matter the conditions, it's just unreal. Still is with Froyo.
So, I can say I have had wildly varying experiences with the same software. That tells me there is hardware variance. I haven't tried software fixes, ever, so I can at least be a reference point from that perspective.

I haven't noticed that before, but I've had the current ROM (Paragon) for a couple weeks, and now I can't get a lock - worked great at the start, after a master clear. Maybe the old Samsung GPS reset app would work here.
What you have proposed is something we should all keep in the back of our minds...
My 1008 build had mediocre (at best) GPS. The I sent it in for repair and when I got it back (and installed Andromeda) the GPS worked so well I was beside myself with joy. The GPS remained fabulous for almost 2 month then, while running Cog 4.1 with Adam's GPS fix (and still working great--I got 10 sats while sitting on my toilet!), nirvana ended. I'm lucky to get 4 sats and locking is painfully slow.
It's been this way for about a week. I'm going to complain to Samsung and see if I can send it back for repair again.

Isn't paragon a kernel?
I'm not as lucky as you with Andromeda 1.2. I live in the SF bay area and can barely get a lock. Any suggestions?
This weekend for the first time I had to use my Nexus 5 turn-by-turn navigation on Google Maps to get somewhere. I'm no stranger to the feature, as my previous Note 2 had a dashboard mounting bracket in my truck for this very reason.
Besides the speaker not being loud enough to hear the directions (one of my complaints with this devie), I found the GPS isn't very accurate at all. I have it set to High Accuracy, using GPS, WiFi and data network to find my position. The software often put the arrow about a block away from where I actually was and it kept falling behind telling me where I was supposed to turn.
I was driving at about 40-50 km/h at night with a cloudy sky. I reckon this was never an issue with my Note 2, both with stock TouchWiz and custom ROMs. My Nexus 5 is on stock 4.4.
So, what's going on here?
I honestly can't say I face this issue. My GPS is on point whether driving or just using it when I go hiking or camping.
A couple of weeks back I helped a buddy move into a new place and I loaded up my truck and he gave me the address and I popped it in the GPS, it locked within seconds and got me there just fine. No issues.
I also use it when I go camping. I'll find a nice place to pitch the tent and mark the campsite, then go exploring. Anything interesting I put a pin on it and can find my way back real easy. The speaker issue, sure. I use Viper4android (sound mod) and custom kernels to raise the output gain and make the speakers louder so that's a non-issue for me.
If you're rooted, check out FasterGPS (and if you're not rooted.. go and root).
Regarding sound loudness: try fauxsound (you'll need a compatible kernel and root). It boosts speaker, handset, and aux output significantly without adding distortion (although you can push it far enough to distort if you please).
Great, thanks for the tips.
Yes, it's rooted.
Regarding the sound boost apps, do they work on stock kernel, or do I need to flash a new one, like franco? I really don't want to do a clean wipe at the moment to install a new kernel.
GPS accuracy might be a loose antennae. As for speaker sound, not sure what to tell you. I had the phone resting on the seat beside me since I have no dock, with the radio going at highway speeds and had no problems hearing the voice directions. I didn't even have to max the volume, it was about 70%. No modifications.
Perhaps you have the extra glue around the speakers issue?
I've had the same GPS issues and they have just gotten worse over time. Have had the phone for 10 months. Finally called Google and a replacement is in the mail.

Let me know if the replacement is better. My GPS has also degraded significantly, but I wasn't sure if that was related to using CM11.
I haven't driven much lately, so this issue alone doesn't warrant a return for me.
However, the disappointment is stacking up over time. It seems to me that the N5 does a lot of things, but none of them very well. It's basically a tinkerer's toy with an attractive pricetag for the specs. Maybe it's because I came from a former flagship Note 2 device, but I do sometimes miss it.

Will do. I did go back to factory, unrooted and relocked the boot loader. GPS is much, MUCH, worse. It actually loses GPS signal now all the time. I'm convinced now more than ever that this is a hardware issue that gets worse over time combined with software that makes it worse. Hopefully the new, albeit refurbished, phone is better.
My GPS has never worked well, I have had mine for about 10 months as well. I've opened it up so the warranty is void but I don't care about that. I would fix it myself if I knew what exactly the problem was.
I use navigation at least a few times a week and I've never had a single issue with the GPS. It locks on right away, and is always accurate.
I had a nexus 5 from Sprint and the GPS was noticeably off, returned it and Sprint (terrible coverage). I got one from the play store and it's spot on.

Got the replacement. Preliminary results...huge difference. Better than the phone originally was when I got it. GPS locks in immediately. And this is rooted stock with elementalx kernel. Will update again after a few days of use, but so far, so good.
Ultimate test passed earlier today. Wife and I went golfing and she dropped her phone somewhere. Loaded up Android Device Manager on my Nexus 5 and drove right to her phone. GPS was bang on.

Samsung's GPS accuracy seems to have taken a real hit in the last couple of years, which I have noticed mostly while playing Ingress.
I would love to hear from an Ingress player how the GPS on the GS6 stacks up to other devices.

Yes, I figured out what it is. The default for the location beacon is "Power saving", which screwed things up. The solution is Settings -> Location -> Locating method -> GPS only. The "location method" is under the "Personal" heading of Settings. I hope this helps all those Ingress players
This is my problem as well. My Note 4 GPS makes playing almost impossible even after a device swap. I'm considering the S6 but searching the web a few others complain here and there making me scared to pull the trigger on the S6, on the flip side though I really like Samsung phones. UGG
I don't play ingress but I've used the s6 for geocaching, works just as good as my N5 did.
Was a bit worried buying this phone as the last galaxy I had was the s3 international and the compass always pointed the opposite direction. Idk if it's because I was using in the states or what but terribly annoying.

GPS on my S6 has been great for playing Ingress. The GPS locks fairly quickly and maintains the lock even in a fairly dense urban environment.

Yeah, see my post above (#6). The Galaxy S6 is fine for Ingress - you just have to make sure the location setting isn't on "power-save", and make sure your phone isn't set to always search for wifi. That's what was screwing me up. As soon as I turned off the always-search-for-wifi setting, the phone switched to using GPS-only, which totally fixed the problem. Ingress works great now.

I'm pretty much inactive now so haven't played with the s6, but outdoors with bright screen plus GPS on, I'd guess you'll see 40% battery drain in an hour. Indoors steady screen on, browsing on Wi-Fi I get 18-20% per hour drain . This is why I carry a 14k Mah battery pack! ?

Hi
I think the last Nexus I've owned with a good compass was the Galaxy Nexus. I owned 3 LG Nexus after that with terrible compass.
So I'd like know how is the compass in the Pixel..Have you had to calibrate the compass sometime during the day after opening Google maps? (After trying in different locations, etc?)
As some reference I'm talking about issues like this one:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/nexus/SK7gbrV5MhU
Thanks!

Any news on this? Nobody has used this yet?
I have to calibrate all the time. It's terrible. Tried several cities and environments. Wife's iPhone worked great. It's a shame for Google.
I'm also having exactly this problem with my Pixel. I have to calibrate the compass every time I open Google Maps. And it also puts the blue dot at a random point distant from my real location, with a giant blue circle around it, and then takes some seconds to calculate my real location. It's very annoying.
It must be a bug.
So the pixel is still terrible in Maps like all the other Nexus I had before?
When is Google finally fix the compass? Its a shame that the old iPhone 5S (work phone) im using right now (because my 5X is in LG warranty) has a perfect maps walking navigation. Specially in narrow neighborhoods historic downtowns.
I thought they finally fixed this in the Pixel now I think I'll stick with the 5X or just get a GM 6 Android one (for the extra GB of RAM). And wait for the 2017 Pixel...Maybe they fix this.

I'm thinking this is a country thing..
I've never had Google maps not know where I am pretty much as soon as I open it. I do keep GPS on all the time as it doesn't seem to effect battery much on my phone(s) the Nexus 5x and now the Pixel. It doesn't matter where I am in the country (US), in what state etc...
As for the compass, that really is something different. GPS tracks where you are and when you move apps like Google Maps will know you moved, how fast you went and what direction you went.
The compass is pretty much just a compass. I have to calibrate it sometimes but most of the time it is close enough in the general direction correct.
The GPS coordinates are always withing 4m or less in accuracy unless I am in a building or under a mountain.
Yeah but was expecting the Pixel to have a polished compass experience and seems to be the same experience as with the previous generations
I've never been able to use Maps in Cities' historic downtowns (where I need it most, for walking directions, since it's like a labyritnth with lots of hidden streets, restaurants, shops, etc).
https://www.google.com/maps/search/born+barcelona/@41.3842691,2.1802357,19.25z
But now, with the backup iPhone that I'm using temporarily, for the first time I was able to trust the compass with a 95%-100% accuracy for a 20 minutes walking trip, and constantly opening/closing maps.
With Google devices, every time I open maps, at different locations, the compass calibration randomly changes.

I think it's a software problem within the Nexus and Pixels binaries. Sometimes you open maps in one location and then you re open maps and calibration is lost.

Yeah but I think I had a phone with good compass accuracy in the past...Maybe the S3 or the Galaxy Nexus...Or a Moto G...
Certainly not the Nexus 4…5...5X and now 6P.
Anyway... I've just sent feedback about this using the Settings menu.
The funny thing is that Maps slowly fix this when you are traveling on a train etc
But if you're walking and turning frequently there is no way it can anticipate that and there is where you noticed that it has no idea about the compass situation.
The only answer that Google always gives is "start swinging you phone like a fuc*ing Jedi"
It's ok to do that once every......6 months...But come on....You have to do this every time you change your location.

The problem is that, my compass is calibrated. But then walk 15 meters, I open google maps, and it's not calibrated anymore (i could fix this just shaking the phone most of the times, but it's fatiguing and humiliating), maybe I decide to close map, walk another 15 meters, and it's calibrated again.
I had this issue with many devices.
I can calibrate the compass and have perfect calibration in all my home, then I take the tube/subway, and calibration might be ok or wrong again when I open maps again.
What is your location mode set to? It should be set to high accuracy of it isn't. If it is then I'm not really sure what else you can do...
Every time it takes minutes to find a sign. After it works fine, but for me it's abnormal. My friend have iphone and even inside the house it finds in a second. Even if it's clear weather, I go outside, it takes a lot for mine to find. Would you give me some report about your device?
I wanna find out if it's android thing, rom, gps app (sygic, but also on the iphone has that, so probably that is fine), or is it only my device? Thanks
I just got the 7pro and I am noticing that location takes longer to load compared to my previous phone which is LGv30. My girlfriend's Samsung S8 takes a little bit longer to find locations than the V30 but is still faster than the 7pro. All phones are with T-Mobile. Playing Pokemon go on the 7pro takes like 30 secs or more to update locations when I wake the phone from sleep from a new location. Kinda annoying.
That's not even bad compare to mine. It needs about 3 minutes, very annoying.
Thanks
