GPS & Ingress - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Samsung's GPS accuracy seems to have taken a real hit in the last couple of years, which I have noticed mostly while playing Ingress.
I would love to hear from an Ingress player how the GPS on the GS6 stacks up to other devices.

I don't know what Ingress is, but I know my AT&T Note3 had a mostly working GPS but the compass was broken all the time.

Yes, I just got the S6 two days ago and the GPS is very messed up. I can't play Ingress at all, and would appreciate hearing about any further help you've received on this.

Disappointing!! That's how the Note 4 was for me, so I returned it. since then, I've been using the Nexus 6. I guess there's no going back to Samsung.

Ingress works for me
I just got my S6 yesterday, and i have been playing ingress all day the GPS system works fine.
no complaints on my end

Solved, I think

Yes, I figured out what it is. The default for the location beacon is "Power saving", which screwed things up. The solution is Settings -> Location -> Locating method -> GPS only. The "location method" is under the "Personal" heading of Settings. I hope this helps all those Ingress players

This is my problem as well. My Note 4 GPS makes playing almost impossible even after a device swap. I'm considering the S6 but searching the web a few others complain here and there making me scared to pull the trigger on the S6, on the flip side though I really like Samsung phones. UGG

I don't play ingress but I've used the s6 for geocaching, works just as good as my N5 did.
Was a bit worried buying this phone as the last galaxy I had was the s3 international and the compass always pointed the opposite direction. Idk if it's because I was using in the states or what but terribly annoying.

GPS on my S6 has been great for playing Ingress. The GPS locks fairly quickly and maintains the lock even in a fairly dense urban environment.

Yeah, see my post above (#6). The Galaxy S6 is fine for Ingress - you just have to make sure the location setting isn't on "power-save", and make sure your phone isn't set to always search for wifi. That's what was screwing me up. As soon as I turned off the always-search-for-wifi setting, the phone switched to using GPS-only, which totally fixed the problem. Ingress works great now.

I did see this. I have however in my searching saw a few others who had have some GPS issues with the phone. I guess no phone is perfect.
Oh well AT&T has that return policy so I think I'm picking one up on Friday.

I know this is kind of old, but what kind of battery life are you getting on ingress? That's my biggest concern about getting the s6.

I'm pretty much inactive now so haven't played with the s6, but outdoors with bright screen plus GPS on, I'd guess you'll see 40% battery drain in an hour. Indoors steady screen on, browsing on Wi-Fi I get 18-20% per hour drain . This is why I carry a 14k Mah battery pack! ?

I actually get great battery life with the S6. I play outdoors on bright days, and with the screen on high - often can play for ~3 hours on a single battery.

I am the only one with a phone with no bugs?

Maybe it's because I upgraded from an ancient AT&T Tilt (not Tilt II!) and this phone is just so much better that I don't notice the flaws.
But every post on here where people mention some bug or another and Mine does not have said bug.
My GPS works, even in the house (which I thought was not possible, because the GPS signal isn't supposed to go through walls)
My Battery lasts from 9:30 am until midnight with downloads, music, calls, video, browsing, and facebook. I have all of the default battery saving options.
My accelerometer/gyro work perfectly.
Please tell me I'm not the only one, because I am so happy with this phone, and it would be a shame if so many people where having problems that it became a flop.
Just my take on it. It is a new phone so there is still a lot of "unknown" about the phone. Also, if you go to any kind of forum like this you usually see a lot of issue/help threads rather than praise threads. Its just the way it is.
I got mine yesterday.. and love the hell out of it.. No problems at all so far, and have not been able to put it down. hahaha
Mine is great
I love my phone and have had no problems at all. and I love swpe, I almost forgot how to type

I upgraded from a touch diamond and this phone is beastly or I just waited too long to upgrade
I did have a GPS problem though, it wouldnt lock on in like 15 minutes, but I changed the settings and I get a lock pretty fast now.
Lag? None. Touchwiz? Decent, and less choppy than launcherpro!
Phone is real good.
They sold almost a million Galaxy S devices before even launching in the states, and the only 'common' problem I have seen that is not obviously software is the GPS issues. But it seems like most can change around a few settings and be fine.
Most if not all of my issues are because I do not know android. Once one or two software updates come out (or cooks make some nice custom roms with bug fixes) most if not all problems I think will vanish.
Nope
No problems, except for the GPS issue. But I live in NYC, and the buildings have always been an issue when trying to connect to the satellites with any device. Anyway, with that said, no issues with the phone/settings/performance etc. at all.

I'll one-up you, I unplug my phone at 6:30 AM when I am about to leave for work and didn't plug it in until it started complaining at me 28 hours later. Thats pretty darn good given the screen size and the fact that I was using wifi and 3G throughout the day.
Coming from a Iphone 3g.
Got my Captivate on Tuesday. Rooted it, took off the junk. Mine is running great even with no new launcher and live backround. GPS works great too.
No bugs here and phone is way faster then any other phone I have ever used.
Mine is running great too. Maybe it's because I'm not a perfectionist, but I love my phone after removing touchwiz it's even faster too.
So far, so good. Any "issues" can be traced back to my ignorance of an Android-based phone, but being a persistent sort I've either figured out the answers myself or by trolling forums. I would venture a guess that most listed problems relate to:
1. Unrealistic expectations that this new phone should behave the same way, or very similar to an older phone, e.g., number of bars should equal previous phone's number of bars and stuff like that.
2. The results of newbies futzing within the depths of the phone without recognizing the potential consequences of their actions should they screw up.
3. Glitches or wishes that will be addressed in updates.
4. Real problems that can be rectified by a swap within the 30 days.
5. Imagined problems that can be rectified by a reality check.
...and so on.
In any event, I have high expectations and this phone has certainly come close to meeting them.

Before purchasing this phone

Hello guys.
I've been considering a purchase on the Nexus 5 from LG, but I've had some thoughts and musings about it as well. Right now, I'm a proud owner of the successful Nexus 4. And let's get serious; it had a few issues:
- Rattling from the camera as well as the SIM-tray
- Power button feels a little unstable while pressing
- Volume rocker getting a little insecure at later use stages
So I was thinking, are there any things that I need to know about the Nexus 5, before I'm pressing "Buy Now"? Are there some common issues? I heard that the camera was fixed by a software update, but are there any more minor and major things that I should be aware of?
Thank you so much!

Minor faults are that until 4.4.3, sms/MMS/data isn't always reliable, doesn't have proper band support for Sprint. And there's a small camera battery bug.
Speakers are covered by right hand easily when phone is in landscape orientation in your hands.
There's a small but NOT annoying rattle because of the OIS image sensor that we have. You can easily fix this by wearing a nice protective case.
I had an early revision of the phone so I'm not sure what the changes are to the new devices.

Buttons and rocker still rattle slightly. Camera doesn't. You can go to a store and play with it before ordering from google

I'm in the same boat as you.
No problems here either...Try one in a store.
Mine is perfect. Buy it, you won't regret it.
Thanks for all the great inputs! You can keep on going if you have something to add :good:
In general it seems that LG fixed the ridiculous issues from the previous Nexus device.
Mine did rattle, then it went away!
The only real issue I've noticed with mine is the power button rattling, but I keep it in a case, so a loose power button is pretty much moot. Some N5 owners complain that the screen is yellow/warmer than that of the N4. That can be remedied by flashing a custom kernel that lets you change the color profile.
No issues here. I've had a "couldn't connect to camera" bug maybe once, but I obliterated snapchat from my phone and rebooted, and it hasn't surfaced since. Retarded app anyway, don't miss it.
Sweet, guys. Thanks for the input. I can accept a few issues here and there because of the bottom-low price of this device.
LAST QUESTION!
I've heard some bad things about the battery. Even though it's quite good, people are experiencing a bad uptime on this specific device.
How is the uptime compared to the N4? Are you experiencing issues? How long can it last?

That's significantly the same or even better than the N4. Thanks for the reply!
I don't know what @jd1639 is doing with his phone all day but...
I have WiFi off, decent cell sercvice at school, location off, GPS off, brightness at 10 percent (lowest possible), and I have greenify to stop Facebook, Kik, Snapchat, and hibernate them. Honestly with my phone, I get about 2 hours of screen on time, after an average day of use at work. That's about 10 hours off the charger, with cell service on and 2G enabled constantly or Internet even off. I usually leave on 2G though. With WiFi at home I get about 3 hours of screen on time, with just texting and social media being used. and it didn't change when I had airplane mode on either. I can game for roughly 2 hours to 2 hours and 30 minutes on my phone.
I haven't got Google Now turned off, because I feel that it is a core feature of KitKat. :/ what is the two biggest battery drainers for me? Cell Service, one, and Android System, 2. I'm on Stock and I installed Franco and Elemental X and no improvement. Franco made Asphault 8 lag so I switched to Elemtal X. I've heard good and bad things about battery, but all I've seen is average use thus far... I came from an Inspire 4G where getting about an hour of screen on time was amazing lol so it's a step up for the Nexus 5.

GPS accuracy

This weekend for the first time I had to use my Nexus 5 turn-by-turn navigation on Google Maps to get somewhere. I'm no stranger to the feature, as my previous Note 2 had a dashboard mounting bracket in my truck for this very reason.
Besides the speaker not being loud enough to hear the directions (one of my complaints with this devie), I found the GPS isn't very accurate at all. I have it set to High Accuracy, using GPS, WiFi and data network to find my position. The software often put the arrow about a block away from where I actually was and it kept falling behind telling me where I was supposed to turn.
I was driving at about 40-50 km/h at night with a cloudy sky. I reckon this was never an issue with my Note 2, both with stock TouchWiz and custom ROMs. My Nexus 5 is on stock 4.4.
So, what's going on here?
I honestly can't say I face this issue. My GPS is on point whether driving or just using it when I go hiking or camping.
A couple of weeks back I helped a buddy move into a new place and I loaded up my truck and he gave me the address and I popped it in the GPS, it locked within seconds and got me there just fine. No issues.
I also use it when I go camping. I'll find a nice place to pitch the tent and mark the campsite, then go exploring. Anything interesting I put a pin on it and can find my way back real easy. The speaker issue, sure. I use Viper4android (sound mod) and custom kernels to raise the output gain and make the speakers louder so that's a non-issue for me.
If you're rooted, check out FasterGPS (and if you're not rooted.. go and root).
Regarding sound loudness: try fauxsound (you'll need a compatible kernel and root). It boosts speaker, handset, and aux output significantly without adding distortion (although you can push it far enough to distort if you please).
Great, thanks for the tips.
Yes, it's rooted.
Regarding the sound boost apps, do they work on stock kernel, or do I need to flash a new one, like franco? I really don't want to do a clean wipe at the moment to install a new kernel.
GPS accuracy might be a loose antennae. As for speaker sound, not sure what to tell you. I had the phone resting on the seat beside me since I have no dock, with the radio going at highway speeds and had no problems hearing the voice directions. I didn't even have to max the volume, it was about 70%. No modifications.
Perhaps you have the extra glue around the speakers issue?
I've had the same GPS issues and they have just gotten worse over time. Have had the phone for 10 months. Finally called Google and a replacement is in the mail.

Let me know if the replacement is better. My GPS has also degraded significantly, but I wasn't sure if that was related to using CM11.
I haven't driven much lately, so this issue alone doesn't warrant a return for me.
However, the disappointment is stacking up over time. It seems to me that the N5 does a lot of things, but none of them very well. It's basically a tinkerer's toy with an attractive pricetag for the specs. Maybe it's because I came from a former flagship Note 2 device, but I do sometimes miss it.

Will do. I did go back to factory, unrooted and relocked the boot loader. GPS is much, MUCH, worse. It actually loses GPS signal now all the time. I'm convinced now more than ever that this is a hardware issue that gets worse over time combined with software that makes it worse. Hopefully the new, albeit refurbished, phone is better.
My GPS has never worked well, I have had mine for about 10 months as well. I've opened it up so the warranty is void but I don't care about that. I would fix it myself if I knew what exactly the problem was.
I use navigation at least a few times a week and I've never had a single issue with the GPS. It locks on right away, and is always accurate.
I had a nexus 5 from Sprint and the GPS was noticeably off, returned it and Sprint (terrible coverage). I got one from the play store and it's spot on.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Got the replacement. Preliminary results...huge difference. Better than the phone originally was when I got it. GPS locks in immediately. And this is rooted stock with elementalx kernel. Will update again after a few days of use, but so far, so good.
Ultimate test passed earlier today. Wife and I went golfing and she dropped her phone somewhere. Loaded up Android Device Manager on my Nexus 5 and drove right to her phone. GPS was bang on.

Samsung Gear S2: Nike+ or S Health for running?

Hi, I just got this watch this weekend and haven't really got a chance to experiment with these apps yet. During the little bit of time I did, I experienced the Nike+ app would lag/skip while music was playing every time I would try to look at the screen. On the other side, the S Health caused my watch to reboot twice for whatever reason.
I was wondering, what are the differences between these apps? If you use one versus the other does the information still get transferred/communicated to the S Health information or the Nike+ results such as the distance and average pace? One other question, is there a way to make the display last longer? It seems as soon as I would try to see my current run's information, the movement of my arm would cause the display to shut off before I could switch between screens, which is pretty frustrating.
Anyone else have any experience with this? Thanks.

I didn't experience the issues you mentioned on the apps - maybe a reboot would help?
I did suffer from poor GPS reception on both apps, though S health seemed a little better on that front (just from a couple of runs). I'm on the TMobile 3g model.
You can connect the Nike and S health apps. When you do so, S health gets a new tile reporting some stats from the Nike app. Clicking on that tile will simply open the Nike app for the full details.
I'm not aware of a way to set a longer time out for the screen. I beleive this was added to a firmware update that so far is only available in Korea, hopefully we'll also get it at some point here in the US. Not sure if changing the screen to always-on might help with the hand movement issue - I'm using the wake up gesture too, so have no experience with that, unfortunately.
Thanks for the information. I did do a reboot last night, hoping that helps.
So between the two apps, they're basically the same and it just comes down to user preference? Glad to hear they share the data. That's a good idea to always leave the watch face on, at least only while running, I just don't want to kill the battery in the first few hours. Hopefully, the firmware gets pushed to us soon, it would make that a lot easier.
Other think that really bothered me yesterday on my first run with the watch (3g, Tmo), was that I was listening music from the watch through some BT headphones, and when I pressed the home button to go to the music app to skip tracks, when I went back to the Nike+, it started again. Did not kept in the background!!!

Just to clarify, the data sharing is one way - you can see some data from Nike on S-health, but I don't think it works the other way round
Also, how can the data on my watch sync with my Shealth on the phone, is it possible?

Yes, the phone app gets stats from the watch - for example step count or heart rate measures are shown on the phone app. Unfortunately I don't remember if I had to do something to make it work or if it syncs automatically, but it's definitely working
Good to know. Looks like I'll be using Nike+ to start out with. To answer bebeloneovvl, I didn't do anything in the settings and my phone synced with my watch to the step. It didn't at first but over night it did and ever since then, once it's in bt range it syncs.
I also noticed that if you're running on the treadmill, if the location/GPS is on it isn't accurate at all, but if that's turned off it's pretty close to what's on the treadmill. Seemed to for me anyways. I didn't even attempt to start either app, the S Health just automatically recognized I was running. I'll have to try the Nike+ app tomorrow.
Thanks for the answer. I did a restart and it seems to work well now. Today on my second day of running, using the watch alone, the distance was wayyyy off. My 4 mile route, that I've been running forever, on the watch measured 3.50 miles. Found that pretty odd, maybe GPS signal drops along the route?

I haven't had the chance to run outside yet with mine, so I can't give you any advice on that, that does suck though... Which app did you use?
I found this thread while Googling inaccurate readings with the Nike app on Samsung Gear S2.
I've run outdoors with it 3 times so far and each time has been way off. Not only is the mileage off, but I noticed while looking at my mapped out run online afterwards that my path jumps all over the place. I ran on a track and it showed me running through the infield many times. Also, I was jogging on a 9 minute/mile pace, but the mileage breakdown showed I was running 4 to 5 minute miles then a huge lump sum of the leftover minutes went to the end of the run.
I've rebooted the watch before runs 2 and 3. I also switched GPS mode to GPS only and not 'GPS and Network'. On the 3rd run, I removed the link between Nike and S Health then ran without heartrate, music, or cheers. Still had inaccuracies.
I was in the market for a Nike watch, but when I saw the Gear S2's with built in Nike App I couldn't pass it up. I love everything else about the watch. I hope they can get these issues resolved. Mine is on the T-Mobile network.

I was really hoping for better results than that... I agree, I love the watch and all the capabilities it has but that's a pretty big factor for me. I really want to keep this, but if this is consistent then it may just be going back to AT&T. We'll see how accurate mine is this weekend. I'm sorry to hear that though.

With the watch being new, I'll give them a chance to fix it. Perhaps a Nike competitor will swoop in and create a better app. In general, there's not many apps available for the watch. I'm looking forward to what the developers can come up with.
running with g2 is inacurrate
I get some issues also. my 6 km run is only 5,5 km with the g2, because at some point, i was looking at the watch and it doens not counted that half km. I will try next time to run with the watch disconected for the phone, because I suspect that it takes the possition from the phone gps, and at some point, the watch disconects from the phone, and maybe that's why it drops the signal
Please try your and give us your review.
I did some more experimenting today. I ran at a local high school 400m track (4 laps = mile).
Here's what I tried this time:
- Turned Bluetooth, WIFI, and NFC off
- Switched Location to GPS only
- I was using T-Mobile 4G network, clear blue Texas skies
- I unlinked the S Health and Nike App to try to prevent any clashing
- Closed all apps that were running
I launched the Nike app, didn't use music, heartrate, or cheers.
I jogged 8 full laps in lane 6 which should of been just over 2.1 miles but it logged me for 1.92.
My map was all over the place. I wanted to post screenshots but I'm a newb and can't until I have 10 posts here.
I don't expect it to be a perfect oval, but my cheap ZTE phone that I usually run with maps it much cleaner and a lot more accurate.
I ended that run, saved it, then ran another 8 laps in lane 2 with heartrate on this time. It says I jogged 1.8 miles instead of just over 2.
I noticed that there is no way to check the GPS signal before running. On both runs, it didn't show the map until halfway through the first lap. I wonder if that's when it started tracking my run
The phone app and Nike watches sync up and make sure you have a good GPS signal before you can run.
Another issue, although minor, I didn't see where to enter the track/road/trail or the shoes option.
I uploaded my path from Nike on imgur, but I can't post it as a link yet.
Decode this and take a look-> imgur dot com/609x3Ws
I swear I wasn't drunk during the 2 runs. I ran in the same lane on an oval track and the GPS was all over the place.
Also, I started and ended in the same spot but it's not reflected on the map. It shows I stop early.
I bought the AT&T version yesterday, mainly as a running device, but also for the smart watch perks. I ran three miles this morning and my experience was terrible.
I left my phone at home, turned off all connections on the watch except for GPS. I brought along my Garmin Forerunner that I've had for almost six years that has been reliably accurate.
It took a good 3-5 minutes for the GPS to initially lock on (I assume the location icon turning solid means it's locked on). I started down my street, which is residential houses with little tree coverage. By the time my Garmin said .40 miles, my S2 said .20 miles. So I decided to try in cycling mode, which I've seen recommended somewhere (running supposedly uses the pedometer instead of GPS for distance).
After switching to the cycling mode, distance seemed to be much more accurate but pace was being difficult. When I swiped to go to the pace screen, the GPS symbol was usually blinking and pace was blank. After a couple seconds, pace would kick in and start trying to match my current pace. Again, the Garmin does this much quicker with varying speeds.
I switched to the Nike Run app and that's just a terrible interface, even worse than the Shealth.
Not only is the GPS tracking pretty bad, but my general experience with the interface was terrible. I have the always on screen mode set to on. The screen of course goes back to ambient mode when the watch is in a certain position. Most of the time when trying to read my stats, the screen wouldn't go to the on the mode, so I would have to touch the screen or spin the dial to get it to turn on (I was also pushing my son in a stroller today, which made it more difficult). On top of that, I have to then scroll to whatever data screen I want to look at. All that screen space and they can only put one stat on each screen.
The Nike app was even worse because I can't even manually change what data I'm looking at. I have to wait for it to scroll through, which IMO, is pretty dangerous is you're running by traffic.
Overall, the experience was just terrible. It's going back to AT&T. I really wanted to like this device, but can't. It was actually great as a smart watch and I really like the look. Unfortunately, the running experience is a complete deal breaker.
Welp, I contacted Nike support Friday and thought I was on the right track, told them everything that was going on and they said their engineer was going to look into it. Yesterday they wrote me and said it's a Samsung problem. I contacted Samsungs support and they are telling me that it's Nike's problem. Samsung also said it's a 3rd party app, which it is, but there is not a way to uninstall it. It came loaded with the watch. I've tried to reinstall the Nike app before to try to fix the problem but it doesn't show up on the uninstall list.
I just love it when they pass the blame back to each other while I'm sitting here with my $350 GPS watch that doesn't work correctly.
I used the built-in S Health app and the map of my run was messed up too, so that rules out Nike's app as being the culprit.
I am sending the watch back to Samsung so they can run diagnostics on it. I'll have it back in a couple of weeks then I'll give it another shot.
GPS inaccuracy?
I just got my new Gear S2 from T-Mobile (3G version) today and did a 5KM running and some walking. I also carried my Galaxy S4 with runkeeper on it. Nike+ app on Gear S2 showed me at 4.9KM. Also as I was running I looked at the watch to see my current distance, but it wasn't updating the current distance instantly. I am very upset for this. Basically I needed a solid GPS watch with phone capability. Do you know if the GPS chip is not good enough or is it a software issue?

Hands On Reports?

I'd love to hear some hands on reports from those that have received their S3. What are your initial impressions? Anyone using it with a non Galaxy companion phone? How well does Samsung Pay MST work? How's the battery life?
Top quality build and feels really great on the wrist. I have let the default face time out, just to see how long the battery will last. It came 87% battery charge and I charged it to 100% before I switched it on. It runs fast with only a little lag on Navigation Here, maybe it was setting things up in the background? If you can afford a top quality watch go for it.
With Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.3 and all notifications passed to the gear S3.
My impressions, from another thread.

Key impressions:
Solid, quality build. Reassuring weight. Precise finish.
Perhaps the screen resolution could be slightly improved but then I guess I'm spoiled by the s7 edge (and the note 7 before it, RIP).
Very pleased.
When I bought the Gear S a couple of years ago, it felt like the money had gone on the technology required to miniaturise. The build was relatively cheap.
But this time I feel I've paid for a quality watch that happens also to be hi-tech.

Nothing to do with the watch but one thing I'm not impressed with is the Level Active bluetooth headphones. Tinny and quiet.
And I'm pretty easy to please - certainly no audio connoisseur.
Maybe I set them up wrong. I'll be switching back to the wired headphones that came with my phone unless I work out a way to improve the sound on these drastically.

Very early impression on the battery life:. It SUCKS!
Fully charged for the first time, when I woke at 0530. Now down to 68%, a little more than 4 hours later.
It's Bluetooth connected to my phone.
Brightness is just over half way.
Screen timeout 15 seconds.
Always on display enabled.
Use has been fairly limited because I've been working since 7am.
Bedding in period required, maybe...

Having owned the Frontier for 24 hours, I love it.
The battery is the only concern but I'm pretty sure either (1) it'll improve after the first few charges or (2) it's faulty and I'll get a replacement. Not too worried about it at the moment.
Battery life on mine seems OK so far. After 12 hours off charge I'm down to 94%. Thought it at includes 7 hours in do not disturb mode (only dropped 3%).
Not using always on display but have the wake motion active.
Just used the Navigation Here app and looks like I will have to throw away my old sat nav. A vibration and a glance down.
---------- Post added at 11:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:50 AM ----------
Been 24 hours and 42% battery with screen set to switch off after 15 secs, low brightness to low.
Down to 55% after 7.5 hrs, with only 13% of the drain in the past 3.5 hrs.
So it's getting a lot better.

Hi how do u use gps without phone cant seem to use mine keeps asking for wifi or location on phone?
Not sure did have the phone in my pocket in standby. Didn't look at it. Just typed in my home address on my gear and it just worked, wasn't thinking about the phone at all. The gear does have GPS built in so I assumed it was that, maybe it was?
Ok got mine up and running (Frontier).
OVERALL
Somewhat undecided, dare i say i always thought the S2 was too small, i find the S3 too big. UI not much difference vs S2, to test more but battery is way better (usage & standby drain)i do find it very nice to wear, hardly notice it is now, but then not premium enough for £349.
Be interesting on hearing from anyone with the classic (I opted for Frontier for the rubber strap, as on my S2 Classic I found to get the HR sensor to work I had to wear it snug, result was the strap was smelly and disgusting)
I have upgraded from each preceding Samsung watch to the S3 (last one was the S2 Classic).
POSITIVE
- Speaker and calling function, really missed this.
- Lightweight feel
- Watch sits perfect on my wrist, the S2 always felt like it was perching on my wrist
- Like that some though has gone into the bezel, now use it to dismiss notifications
- Like the app info/setting, give allot more control
- My S2 battery I could get 3-4 days, this after allot of setup play around lost only 7%, I reckon I will get a week : )
NEGATIVE
- Feels cheap
- Lost some minor function, like adjust font size
- Watch faces are poor, in particular the chrono version
- Dislike the recessed display, make finger swiping trickier
- SPOTIFY, again robbed as the S2, advertised globally, but not for the UK !!!
- SAMSUNG PAY, beyond a joke, a year on promised on the S2, the S3, nothing again.

You can't. The maps aren't downloadable on the watch which would be required to use only GPS to navigate. On the 3/4G watches past and present carrier wireless is what provides the data feed for the watch in stand-alone mode. For Wi-Fi only devices no wireless connection (stand-alone or via a connected phone) means no stand-alone navigation.
Only reason i got watch was gps silly me

More standalone navigation is supposed to be coming soon. Here need to launch their new app: http://360.here.com/2016/09/01/introducing-here-wego-for-samsung-gear-s3/
What version u got? I presumed this watch would use its own gps thats why its got the gps chip in it for jogging without phone didnt realise u couldnt use that feature without phone so why did they put gps chip in gear if u cant use it as standalone device
I'm waiting for my Frontier (no LTE) version to come but not until december.
Has anyone used Gear S3 with Oneplus 3 and if does it work with all notifications and everything?
Would Frontier work with separate 4g/LTE wlan hotspot (not through phone) so u could go for a run and listen to Spotify?
Is there any apps for Whatsapp? Just that it would be smaller device to carry with than phone.
No LTE version...GPS...should it work when running without phone?
There is an option on the watch to turn on internal gps. I believe as standard it will use the phones gps for location services.
Battery, 32 hours and 16%, used as above. Says 7 hours left but will charge it overnight.

I think that is the version I am running and have downloaded UK maps onto my Galaxy S3 and ticked stand alone.

If the S3 feels cheap, you must have hated the Gear S!
I suppose it's subjective - I think for 300 odd quid, the S3 feels really well made. I was pleasantly surprised by that.
Apart from the Gear S though, I've never worn a watch so have little to compare it with. You may be used to expensive, traditional watches and therefore have higher standards than me.

You can change the font type and size in settings/style. There are only three font sizes to choose from though - is that different from the S2?

Cheap compared to my prior Gear S2 Classic.
Thanks for the font help, used to help under display.
Sent from my SM-G935F using XDA-Developers mobile app
So are the only apps available the ones in the galaxy app store? Pretty poor really, just lots of different watch faces. I was hoping for more apps to control my phone and the apps on it.
