Always a good idea to update your recovery to the latest.
Root is IN the rom. I pretty much guarantee that any rom you flash via recovery will be pre-rooted.
If you're unsure of the processes for anything, have a read of all the sticky threads linked in my signature
Flash the latest twrp first, then pick a rom

Personally, I've faced many issues with twrp in the past and ever since I've started using PhilzTouch (advanced version of cwm), I haven't looked back!

according to the official thread:
End Of Support
Quote:
Project Status: No Longer Updated
As I mentioned before, I have a lot of new important projects in my real life. I am very happy to abandon this project for real life alternatives.
CWM is a dead project for now, until some dev resurrects it. I was about to do, until these new projects came.
Current version will probably work a while for many devices. Some devices with new ROM installers could have issues. Just use TWRP or the CM Simple Recovery
If the current version works for you, there is no reason you don't use it though. No need to ***** in all threads because it doesn't work for you. Just move on to other alternatives.

but I see that it has been updated 2 days ago...
Philz is good and it works for now. I too had issues with TWRP on my S3, That's why I moved to Philz on that device and brought Philz to the N5.
We may see bug fixes with Philz if the device maintainers notice them. For example, the update 2 days ago was a bug I found and fixed. So if there is something broken, we may see fixes. New features - nope. So lets see what happens when L comes out with its default device encryption. I'm not jumping ship until I have to.

well, most recoveries arent going to be in a flash in recovery form. if its in a zip, you might have to extract it and use fastboot to flash the actual twrprecovery.img or you can use the flashify app(if you have root).

no, its 2.8 http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/205
anyways, im using an old one as well(2.6.something), and everything works fine.
rom and gapps. most roms will need the google apps to be flashed as well, since its illegal to include them in publically distributed custom roms.
the only reason why i havent flash a new rom again because the rom that im currently running is good doesnt really give problems like random reboots
the only thing is its an older version.
and its really tiring thing to start all over again.
anyways any good rom out there?
its close to stock rom with minor tweaks
im on purity rom btw 4.4.2

oh, youll also need to flash the latest supersu(for root) http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
I've been looking around, but I can't find anything to suggest root is available on the stock kernel. Does anyone know if there is? CF-Autoroot doesn't work for 6.0, and so far all I've found is root for custom kernels but I want all stock.
try this

Thanks for the link, I already looked there and they said "This is a stock kernel which provides root access along with some tweaks". It has tweaks in it, so to me that's modified which isn't stock IMO. Sorry I'm just a fussy person, I've tried custom ROMs and the rest before, but they tend to just screw stuff up for me, even the highly favorable CyanogenMod ROMs, they used to make my phone a furnace at idle! So I like the clean (almost) bug-free, vanilla stock experience on my daily driver device.

You could try Chainfire's modded boot image alone (i.e. without another custom kernel).
Perhaps it more "stock" than others. I just followed his instructions (flashed the boot.img and flashed the beta SuperSU zip in TWRP) and I appear to have root on stock Marshmallow.

I don't see how a benchmark entry suddenly means official Nougat is rolling out anyway.
Yeah, that headline is hyperbole. It's a good indicator that it's getting closer. Not that it is about to our is rolling out.
Oh look, another Nougat roll out thread with the same image as all of the others.

Your Phone will give the message that there is an update to new software. But as soon you will try to install it, it will fail.
OTA can't be installed on custom recovery, you need te be on stock rom, stock recovery and unrooted.
There are a few posts on the general section to go back to scratch, or just wait till a developer makes an stock based rom on 7.1.

Do you mean FlashFire? flashfire warns you that Motorola devices are Experimental.
Isn't it risky to from 6 to 7 with flashfire? And sure you may not have Xposed Framework installed.

Flashfire is of course what I meant, Doh on my part!! Never had any issues with it working with my Moto X Style. I would imagine that Motorola have factored in that the majority of their users will still be running an out of date version of Android and that it will go from 6 to 7 with little if any issues. I'll be giving it a try from a custom 7.1.1 rom first before wiping my device and trying it that way, once (if!) it comes out of course.

My understanding is that they've released the base code which now can be tailored to work on our device. I think that @jcadduono who adapted 3.0.1 for our device would have to do the same with this base.

That's right!
My honest guess is that they won't be having a official TWRP for us. It's not not that popular of a device unfortunately. I've had the official TWRP app installed from the play store for a while and our device isn't listed.
Best way to check is just DL official TWRP app and run it daily.
It be awesome to have a 3.1.0 but I don't need it to do anything more than what I do now!! ?

Lol true thing. I only do backups, restore, flash things (HECK YEAH)! , clean (dalvik, cache, system, data, internal storage), factory reset, and sometimes removing files from the file manager on TWRP. I don't know what else is there to be added. (Now it is true that sometimes twrp does crashes while installedomg a rom with AROMA installer. But it is nothing that cant be fix by pulling out the battery (thanks LG LOL) and putting it back again.
Besides what the current recovery does, what more do we need the recovery to do? I know there's new bells and whistles, but it works and it's stable for this variant. So, what else do we need?

It has some enhanced ADB functionality which may be helpful for Devs doing their thing (which in the end benefits us). Also has a better partition scheme for 7.1.1 which will benefit us if we ever get that update from LG. And while it's true we probably will never get the "official" support from TWRP now that the base code is available JCADDUNODO can create a 3.1.0 for us. That's what he did on 3.0.2.
It also allows for flashing ota zips too. This is a big deal, their biggest update in a while.
So to give more of the backstory I have an unlocked one +7 pro 5G that I flash the European firmware to and what I’m trying to do now is flash a custom ROM onto my 1+7 pro 5G. When I brought up TWRP any time I try to flash any ROM, whether it be lineage or something else I get that error saying that the ROM I selected failed and I exactly sure what’s causing that to happen.

I would try a deep clean:
Complete reset with deletion of the internal storage
Stock firmware reinstallation via fastboot, here you find everything.
Unlock bootloader and root with latest magisk release and twrp 3.3.1-79
Installation of the crDroid rom
I have no other ideas also because I cannot see the images with the error that appears when you try the flash.

Stick with OOS... There's practically no ROM out there made to work with the 5G version of the the OP7Pro.
Only 4G version works with all ROMs , that's probably your issue.
