What to replace TF700 with? - Asus Transformer TF700

I have loved all THREE of my transformers...Hell, I still use my TF101. It's only because of Timdurus supreme effort that we are able to continue to use this amazing device.
For me, the keyboard with extra batter and full sized USB connectors was/is key. The screen size is fine and the rest works well.
Now, unfortunately, it is getting slower and slower when using new app versions.
has anyone and suggestions on what to replace it with? I essentially use them as laptop replacements, so the attached keyboard with battery pack and full sized USB is critical..
I will continue to use them either way, just planning for the future.
I wonder what timduru is using now?
Thanks,
Blackice (Rick)

Chromebooks!
I've moved over to chromeos as it can still (kinds) run android apps and am much happy using it as a 2 in 1 than I ever was with the Asus transformers (had the 101, 201,700 and 701).
Have a look at the Asus C434, C433 or the new C436 models

Thanks for getting back to me on this sbdags. I have been looking around for a TF701T (I only have 700's) as a stopgap.
Tell me more about Android compatibility within ChromeOS. I am not a big fan of Google's majorly intrusive apps..even though I use some of them.
Also, any idea why I would have seemingly random pauses on my 7.1 timduru ROM on a 700??
Hope all is well!
Rich "BlackIce"

Looking for a 701 also as a fun to mod tablet, hate to say it but for everyday working tablet I'm went with a Surface 6. - NP

Thrive or Transformer

which is better in both of these devices? Transformer (without keyboard) or Toshiba Thrive..I was ready to get the transformer but then i heard that b7 or b8 cant be rooted and i totally want to root my device and on the other hand Thrive can be rooted but its still on 3.1 officially..if i get thrive will i get good official support? and also i saw that Thrive dosent have any XDA support right now because i dont see any roms in development section of Thrive. The thickness and weight are ok for me and having full sized USB port is awesome but the only thing holding me back is the support for the device...
Please share your opinions
If it was me and the TF's dock was non existent, I'd take whichever was cheaper.
Pro for Thrive: full sized USB and SD card; TF needs a Dock for that.
Pro for TF: It's probably the best battery life you're going to get and has the awesome dock option.
Beyond that I don't see big differences in hardware, although I will admit, the review I just googled listed a linpack score slightly worse than my phone (0.05-0.10% of my TF), which makes me wonder what kind of damn lies are in there or if I just read the wrong MFLOPS on it lol. Until ICS I doubt you will get much out of ROM land to be worth the worry, so much as Root is preferable with how much these things cost!
Full Disclosure: given everything on the current market, I chose a 32GB TF and dock, a rootable one .
If it was me, I'd wait a TF2... unless you have money to spare, or you're in mad need of a tablet. I mean, we're close to Thanksgiving and Christmas, which at the least might give you an even cheaper deal on one of those two choices so you might as well wait...
I chose a 16gb + dock. I like having a physical keyboard, and the battery life is extremely useful.

the price difference between both is 40$ approx and will thrive get ICS sooner?
and want to ask 1 more thing...right now is there any app in android that can extract winrar multi part files?
Despite what folks say around here (which sounds like more wishful thinking than evidence to me), I don't expect the TF101 to _ever_ get ICS, unless it is done via a custom ROM. Ditto for every tablet on the market today.
I expect the Transformer 2 to have ICS, ditto for future tablets. Why? Because with how fast such things go versus how fast equipment ages I doubt there is sufficient ROI to interest them in investing in our investments . But on the upside, I'll probably be running ICS on my TF101 a few months after ROMs go that way.

i have a question
Can we type while video calling or use IM and video call at the same time? skype or gtalk or anything.

[Q] Current owners, I'm about to be an owner and I have some questions

I just purchased this from Woot for $299 bundled with the dock.
I still haven't received it, I probably will next week, I just had some questions.
(I did own the TF300 dock bundle and liked it but had to sell it)
Do you think that's a good deal?
Do you still enjoy your TF700?
If you have CM10 on it, how does it work?
If you have any other ROM, what do you like about it?
Anything you feel I should know (or get)?
Case recommendations would be nice.
Thanks in advance!

$300 with the dock is a fair deal for a new tablet with these spec's.
No I do not like my T700 anymore, the ram is not powerful enough to run at the tablets native resolution causing the machine to run slow and hang all the time.
CM10 works fine, it's the only way to stomach using this tablet. Don't keep this tablet unless you plan to root it. Heck Don't buy it period buy the new amazon kindle and root that. . .
I use a rooCASE you can find them on Amazon they are fantastic.
The rams fine, although 1gb is restrictive, most devices only have 1gb and android really dont need more currently. Theres a well known issue with Asus using cheap nand chips resulting to low IO performance, with custom ROMs and kernels this can be counteracted and isnt much of an issue.
This was the case with the tf300t also.

Ya, I had a Nexus 7 and it only had 1gb of RAM and it still flew. That is on a smaller tablet with the lower resolution.
I do plan on unlocking it and using a rom.
I was mainly curious if this thing is the beast I've heard about once it's unleashed or if the bitter people in the Amazon reviews were just unsavvy with tech and use everything stock.
I won't be doing too much except web surfing, maybe a little bit of gaming and some video watching and social media using. Nothing too spectacular. I just really liked my tf300 and remember dreaming of having this baby, or even the prime, in exchange. Mainly for the dock. Dat dock.

Well the biggest point of this tablet is the screen, which is still one of the best on the market, ive even been reading that the tf701 has a strange yellow tint to the screen, not the case here.
At stock their are issues with the tablet, caused mostly by that IO bottleneck, With cromi and _thatv5 or hundsbuah kernels this tablet is very smooth, for a bit of a gaming comparison i was able to play dead trigger 2 with tegra 4 extended effects at about 20-30fps using hundsbuahs kernel heavily overclocked, which is very acceptable considering its pushing a 1920x1200 screen.
I also have a tf300t in the house, and a side by side comparision makes the tf300t's screen hard to look at lol, before i owned the tf700 i thought the tf300ts screen was fantastic.
There is really no performance benefit over the tf300t but the tf700 is still a better tablet. For me the main advantage is our native linux dualboot. Turns this device into a very portable notebook with an almost unrivaled battery life, and fantastic for school etc, and then use android for media/ gaming etc.

Yea, that sounds like what I was kind of expect. From what I could understand.
I never really had to instal a kernel on any of my devices so I'm not familiar with what to choose and all. Any recommendations or links would be much appreciated. I would like to have it dual-boot linux, although I'm curious if it works with any rom I pick, because I'd honestly really like to be using 4.3 if it's running properly.
Should I unlock this thing right when I get it because it's a great deal and a great tablet so who cares about the warranty or should I wait a while?
I guess I'm just hoping I don't get a tablet that lags all the time. I've heard black and white on that. But I'm not doing anything crazy on it so I figure I should be golden.
Well i proberly recommend this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230059 for cromi
if you need more performance and the cost of battery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2143093 this is a good choice.
I havnt tried android 4.3 on this tablet (cyanogenmod etc) as im not a fan of the 4.2+ laucher, but it should run fine, i know some ROMs lack alot of framework for the keyboard dock that the stock roms have, but thats up to you
The dualboot has up til now only supported stock/cromi roms, but with the new method should work fine.
My recommendation on unlocking would be to use the tablet as stock for 2-5 days to make sure there are no hardware defects, after that you should be good to unlock. In that 2-5 days i recommend reading through the forum to understand the methods used to flash roms, unlock, root etc
One example of this is backing up your mmcblk0p6 partition and restoring it after unlocking with i believes restores the drm keys that are removed during unlocking process, i think these keys are needed for full hd playback in some drm apps.

[Q] Are you still liking your tf700?

Hello. I was thinking about picking up a tf700 but i wanted to know how its running today. IS it still quick? Do you still like it? Do you recommend it? it seems like a steal right now considering it only cost 199 on eBay brand new. The other option is the nexus 10 but the screen is not that much better, no sd support, and similiar antutu scores seem to make to make the transformer the better option. So what do you guys think. thanks for the response!!
At this point stock feels basically unusable. The good news is that there are some wicked cool ROMs that take care of those problems. If you're OK flashing ROMs then this could be a great bargain buy (especially if you can get the keyboard cheap too). The speakers aren't great but other than that it handles everything I've asked of it.

I would say a Nexus 10 is still the better option, unless you really like the keyboard dock and really need expandable storage. Custom ROMs can make the tf700 perform better, but in no way can it rectify hardware problem (really slow internal storage). I am sure a Nexus 10 on custom ROM can easily outperform any tf700 on custom ROM. ASUS is no longer supporting the tf700 with regards to software updates (still stuck with Android 4.2.1) while the Nexus 10 is rocking the latest version of Android (4.4.3).
Thanks for the replies. i will probably go with the tf700. Another question though is the internal storage really that slow.
The internal memory is proven slow. As others will say, if you unlock it and go with custom rom's, then things improve. How do you handle lag in your devices? If you are someone who stresses over apps taking a bit longer to open, some jutters moving around the windows, etc, then this is not the device for you if you are unwilling to unlock and install other software.
At $199, I'd buy it. To me it's a better investiment than some of the new tablets sold at this price range. With the keyboard dock this has replaced my laptop. I use Splashtop THD version to remote into my computer for anything that requires a pc. This version works on Tegra chips and doesn't charge you a monthly fee to remote into the pc if the devices are not on the same network. I use it through my work wifi and tethered to my phone with no problems.

If you can afford more than $200 for a tablet, you can get a better and newer device... However, for $200 brand new tf700, it is better than most of devices out there with that price range...
Yes, it is slow but it is usable on light loads or basic usages. You may want to use custom ROM to speed the device up... Make sure that you can unluck it, Good luck....:fingers-crossed:
thanks for the help everyone. i will probably root and unlock as you guys say i just usually like running my devices for stock for as long as possible. but no problem.
I still love mine (in fact I have 2 at the moment - one on stock and one on Cromi-X 5.4 F2FS).
200 for a new one?? In the UK a used 32Gig one would cost around £230, a 64Gig one goes for £600 new £360 used (these include the keyboards).
I've set the 64gig one up on Cromi-X 5.4, using F2FS, but kept all other tweaks to the minimum. got a 128GB SD in the dock mounted as NTFS and a 64GB micro SD formatted in standard FAT32.
Hardly notice any stutter or drag tbh.
Would I go with a different tablet? I dont think so as I love the ability to use the keyboard dock, the one that could tempt me at the moment would be the Z2, but not for the price they go for or the Samsung Tablet S (once it is out but again I reckon it is going to be £££££££)
I hate mine. CROMi-X has helped a lot, but it still has a half-life of about three days before I have to wipe caches again. Sorry, I get impatient waiting for it to wake up. WiFi is horribly slow on it also.
The plus side is it has taught me that I don't actually need a tablet. I had dreams of streamlining at work with it, but the spiral notebook seems to work well enough (starts up instantly, no lag, etc. but search capability could use work).
Nowadays I basically only use it for ebooks, a handful of games, and YouTube when the WiFi interface feels like working. If I need to do any quick web lookups and am not near a desktop I just use my phone.

Can your TF300 be replaced?

I recently had a scare where something like a single drop of water got into my keyboard dock and the "T" key went unresponsive. I disassembled the dock, but I was afraid to pop the three "tension-teeth" nuts near the trackpad and so I couldn't really clean out the keyboard. I did the best I could and put it back together and then it was worse because the "T" was pressed all the time.
Eventually it got better, but after a day without my tablet, I came to realize how much I depend on the very specific skillset the TF300 gives me. I have an excellent Core i7 laptop from work, but it isn't as portable as my tablet, so I usually leave it at home. The battery doesn't last as long as my tablet even without the dock. The laptop doesn't have a touchscreen, either, so I can't use it for recording lectures using the tablet as a whiteboard. I write exams and even do some coding with the keyboard, but I can also disconnect it to read a book or watch the UEFA tournament on the couch.
In that panicked day, I spent a lot of time online looking for a replacement device I could afford and could justify buying when I have a perfectly good (and free) laptop at my disposal. I looked first to ASUS, but the TF103c seemed to be a step down from the TF300 and ASUS seems to be headed more towards bargain tablets and the Windows market. Since I use the tablet as a whiteboard recorder, I was tempted to find a device with an active stylus (VivoTab, Surface Pro, Galaxy Note Pro), but everything was practically in the $1000+ range.
So my question to you is this - if you couldn't have another TF300, what device would you replace it with?
-Don
Exactly the same question I have in mind, though from a different cause - the tablet is too slow for Android 5+ and the TWRP thread was closed just yesterday, marking the end of a phase of development.
On the cheap spectrum, I have a TabPRO 8.4, but there aren't many small bluetooth keyboard choices out there for 8-inchers (except the goddamn iPad mini), and I could only find myself a keyboard of roughly the same size after quite a hard search. I just ordered it yesterday and it should arrive in 3 days so let's see how it goes.
The TabPRO 10/12 and TabS 10 (1st gen.) have pretty decent keyboard though, with adequate tablet slots - some of which are designed specifically for them.
And if you don't mind Windows, I've been looking at the T100 series from ASUS themselves, which is essentially the Transformer Pad for Windows. They're around $200~300 here in second-hand.
On the higher spectrum, I really adore the Z4 Tablet and its detachable keyboard, but seeing how even the original Z Tablet still sells for $200+ here (which is even more expensive than my second-hand PRO 8.4), I guess I can't put hopes on these Sony stuffs. You might want that if you have the money.
As for the extra battery from the dock... I guess that's unmatched by any other than Transformer Pads - deal with it.

There are two good tablets that utilize the Tegra4 AND have an extra battery in the keyboard:
- Asus TF701
- HP Slatebook x2
The TF701 has an AMAZING screen (2560p) and the Slatebook has a better keyboard. They're both about the same price, but I'd choose the TF701.

If you mean KatKiss then it's expected, but I'm a strict CM fan and won't use any other AOSP- or CM-based ROMs unless it's *available for all my other devices* - I want a consistent experience across them.
In other news I've already sold my TF300TL, though I think I won't be getting a replacement and will stick to my TabPRO for the mean time.

If you're looking to upgrade, the tf701 is indeed superior in every way.. But also more expensive. So either get a tf300 or go for the tf701.
I would skip the tf700 because why bother really.
Nexus 7 is fairly similar as well. Smaller, and has no dock but is just as powerful as the tf300 with long autonomy and they cost next to nothing on used market ($50). Also you can always use USB or bluetooth keyboard dock. Runs several 5.1 ROMs and does it just fine. Not really an "upgrade" for you but it'll give you a few weeks of fun at a low price.
After getting a Nexus 6 i had put aside my TF300T for some time but after flashing a custom rom and messing around a bit with it i get to use it more now. It's really awesome specifiacally for the keyboard combination and i wouldn't like to give it up. If i had to change it though and get something similar my best choice would probably be a chromebook. There are cheap ones that are very good. Although chrome os is different from android and sure there are not as many or as good apps as on android i think it's the best bet if you want a simple, cheap and portable computer with the sync across google products.

I definitely agree with this for the same reason, having one consistent rom on all devices. Then I appreciate a lot of features I have only seen on CM, like extended desktop (which is really useful for working with the dock only), app security asking for access to private data, rom-update started inside the rom with changelog aside, and a few others if I remember...
But I have to admit, CM11 and CM12 are quite slow on the TF300T, 12 even a bit worse than 11, eventhough I was hoping CM12 would improve due to a better memory management and ART runtime. So eventhough CM12.1 is running fine on our Motorola phones I'm going to check the mentioned roms on the transformer...

ROMs and replacement

Hi guys,
I'm still my ol'good Asus TF-700. I have installed a long time ago the zombi-pop 5.1 rom.
The tablet is running quite fine but despite having everything on sdcard, some lags remain.
I saw that newer ROMs based on MM or Nougat do not support SDCard installation anymore.
So, will those ROMs give me better performance anyway ? Or Zombi-pop is still the best I can have.
I'm wondering if my lags are not due to F2FS not supportying TRIM...I may go back to ext4, don't know...
On another side, i'm considering changing my tablet. But I really apperciate the keyboard dock with battery and 10" screen.
I know Google Pixel C but it's very expensive.
Any other tablet you can suggest that will fit my needs ?
Regards.
It wasnt too hard to change up the ROM. I flashed the katkiss ROM yesterday.
I was thinking about changing over to a surface pro but not sure yet...
Chuwi makes several tabs that are dual OS Windows/Android RemixOS. A friend of mine bought one and likes it but I don't know how good they really are. But it is interesting....
http://en.chuwi.com/tablet.html
Im running KatKiss nougat and have been on a never ending quest for the best performance. I suggest running Nougat. Putting and keeping the CPU speed at 1.4mhz and using ZRAM on boot. That seems to make it quite snappy and good on battery life. My main use is to use Microsoft Word at work and watch Podcasts and Netflix. Generally that is enough for me. Word is a BEAST and seems to take a toll on memory etc. I suggest keeping the sync and autosave functions off and keep the files on the local drive and sync them later into the google drive.
I may be a little late to the thread but I recently replaced my TF700 with a Samsung Chromebook Plus and its just great.
Chromebooks now run Android apps (well some of them do) and this device has a 2400x1600 display, keyboard, touchpad, touch-screen, pressure sensitive stylus and a microSD slot.
Overall this thing is awesome, so much better performance than the TF700.
There are a few minor negatives. No way to get root access or install custom ROMs (but you can install linux), and Android apps don't yet have access to the SDcard (but should in a few versions).
Currently you can open files read-only from the Chrome files app and choose an Android app to run them in.
I don't really miss root access much and the frequent updates to Chromebooks (for at least 5 years) lessens my desire for custom ROMs.
I recommend taking a look at a few Chromebooks if you are still looking for a new device, they are a much cheaper option than many of the Android tablets that are around.
Hi. Sorry this is not the original intention of the thread.
I just picked up a TF700 for light use. Maybe take to class for note taking or just bring with me when I don't feel like toting my laptop. Anyways I just wanted to find out from you guys what you recommend software-wise for maximum usability. Will I see a significant increase in speed if I install a custom ROM? It currently just has the stock 4.2.1. A few years ago I used a TF300t and a fancy stylus for note taking, but Inot longer have either. I didn't have the keyboard for it, so this seems like it will be more useful.

The only active development of ROM for TF700 and likely better than anything out there is on this thread. As you're on android 4 you probably have some maintenance to do to get from there to the latest version V24 7.1.2 your bootloader is probably older for starters.
