Just looking into getting a tablet and I saw Best Buy would be having these on black friday and was wondering if you guy still think the TF is worth it still. I don't have a ton to spend. But with all the new tablets coming out and Tegra 3 tablets coming out soon too, is this still worth it? I like the idea of adding the keyboard dock too and just us it to replace my laptop with something hopefully a bit quicker and all. Still seems to be a nice tablet. I have just started diving through the forums to try and find more info out about them, but I would appreciate any input from you guys. Also, do you guys think that an android tablet like the TF is a feasible replacement for a laptop in most respects or not yet? Thanks much!

depends on what you need out of the tablet. if you want something that is seconds faster is more capable in handeling true multitasking and plan on playing a ton of heavy games or do hardcore editing (when the right apps come out) then sure wait to get a quadcore tablet. otherwise the transformer is an excellent tablet esp with ICS coming around the corner. Also, look at some youtube videos of the transformer and read up on the new possible features of a quadcore tablet and then make a rational decision with what you actually need.
And also keep in mind that if you are waiting for the "Next Big Thing"...that's what you'll do....wait. IMHO the TF 101 does everything I need wonderfully. And at a pretty darn good price point. But you should read as much as you can from as many sources as you can. Then decide.
Something to consider also. I've not read anything if the TF 201 will be root-able.
Always get the product that fits your needs, not the "best" one. Cause the next best thing is always a few months away. The Tf101 (now) and the Prime are both going to be running ICS in a few months so its a matter of gaming, speeds and missing out on very few things that the transformer cannot do now.
Well thats my personal opinion. I highly doubt that quadcore means much without running a new OS but I could be wrong. Seems like dual core is plenty for Android. We haven't gotten to the point where tablets can replace notebooks entirely so it's kind of the middle gray area that's not essential if you ask me.

obviously, once the TF2 comes out, the TF would be out-of-date. but at the price best buy is offering it, it'd say it's definitely worth it. i paid full price for mine+shipping+tax, and i still think it's worth it.

Poll is 14 to 0 it is still worth it. I paid $559 for mine with dock. I regret getting the dock i never use it but sounded like a great idea. I also use my laptop 99% less and my PSP not at all even my dad decided he wanted one and he still uses a bar phone and PIII laptop from 2001 that barely runs XP.
I have the TF and dock and love it, so much that when newegg had the TF+ dock for 399 I bought a second one for my wife. I have almost completely used it to replace my laptop. I watch movies, access online college classes and my business' quickbooks portfolio...just to name a few of its primary uses for me. It its more than enough power for what majority would use a tablet/netbook for.
That being said, I will most likely get prime as soon as they are readily available. However,i have zero regret buying a TF when I did and if I didnt have one now and needed one I wouldn't hesitate to buy again. It won't be obsolete for a long time, this little powerhouse still has some life left in her.

So, it seems like most people still love this tablet which makes me less skeptical about getting the "last big thing." Another question, any opinions about the laptop dock? Is it worth it for most applications?
I use the TF to do lots of typing, between classes and paper work for my business it its a necessity. Our also makes watching movies and stuff nice cause you dont have to hold it. Those are the convenience uses.
But don't forget that the dock also provides you with 2 usb 2.0 slots, great for the 1tb portable hard drive, plus an additional full size sd slot. If that wasn't enough, asus felt they also need to add a set of batteries that increase life by about 6 hours. The nice thing about it is that if your tf is not 100% charged the battery power will transfer to the tf until it is, essential making the dock a portable charger as well.
I can't speak more highly of this tab and dock, to think,i was intending on buying a galaxy tab but it was sold out so I bought the asus on an impulse... Sure am glad I did!

At 250 bux, its worth it. At full price (32 gig version is selling for 399 on amazon) I'd wait. Especially since 'waiting for the next best thing' in this case is most likely only a month away.
My girlfriend has an ipad2. And while I prefer this OS, hers is much nicer to hold. And with the prime being thinner and lighter than the Ipad2, that's a huge selling point for me since the vast majority of the time I'm using this while lounging around.
while the TF2 is an overall upgrade from the TF1 its not exactly lightyears ahead of it. If you can snag the TF1 plus dock for a deal on black friday/cyber monday I'd do it. But if you cant then I would just get the prime.
Best Tablet Investment I Ever Made
This tablet is definitely worth buying. ASUS does a great job of keeping it up-to-date. It runs apps and games wonderfully. Like others have said, I have barely touched my laptop since buying it.
Hi guys i worked really hard this summer to save up for this tablet and dock. it was sweet the first week and i made sure to factory reset and just install good known apps. 3 weeks later the device is still... pretty snappy i guess. it laggs opening the app drawer with only 2 pages of apps lol. getting back to the homescreen sometimes is a pain . and i dont understand why there is not a lot of people with the device ! the nexus 7 has every dev and his grandmother making things for it. its getting really hard to justify the money i spent for it
so my question is. would you sell your tablet and dock ( lets say my dad wants to buy it off me for 600$) and you get a nexus 7 and enjoy the custom roms, gaming and community behind it ? with lots to spare? i dont use the camera on the tf700, i mostly use cloud storage so idk if i need the micro and full size sd card i bought lol. hm at the same time i dont want to regret it later. oh well ! opinions ?
If the Nexus were 10", I'd consider it. As is, absolutely not. I've tried a 7" tablet before, and they're just too small to do anything productive on them. They're great pocket web browsers, but at that point I feel like I could just whip out my phone and as such dont see much of a point.
Roms WILL come for the Infinity. Its still a rather new device, the Nexus has the advantage of full source being available for it from day 1. Most non-nexus devices have only kernel source available, so it takes a while for devs to figure things out. Once one AOSP ROM drops, development should pick up really fast.
I'd never consider having a 7" tablet instead of a 10" tablet or the Infinity specifically, especially with the dock. This is more of a netbook (but not laptop) vs Infinity thing for me.
I'll definitely consider getting a 7" tablet as an addition to it, however, for note-taking on the go and such, but when there's a solid 7" tablet with SD card slot, 3G, good (and fast-charging) battery with reasonable CPU/GPU/SoC and JB out... pretty demanding, so I'm still waiting, 3G seems to be the biggest problem in these.

+1 for a 10" over a 7". I have to say I have a sorry long history with the various tablets, going back to the very first Android Tabs. I have had the full range of Asus devices, spent months testing the Xoom and the Galaxy 10.1 for VZW, the ViewSonic gTablet, all the way back to the Augen Gentouch and the Velocity Cruz. For me, 7" is a great e-reader and that is about it. I am very hard-pressed to come up with anything that it is useful for besides reading a book that I can't do faster and easier with either my phone or my tablet depending on the need.
I just don't see the value in it. Borrow a 7" and try to take notes, it really doesn't work nearly as well as you would hope. Then do it on a 10" and see the difference.

No SD slot on Nexus, thats why I got a tf700 in the first place.
I was really tempted initially when I found out how few apps there are supported. But measured side by side its main competitor in my mind the ipad 3, the infinity just has so much more functionality I'm willing to wait for the app support. :victory:
I waited forever to get the Infinity so I definitely have patience for more development.

I'd say no. If you REALLY want a device with lots of devs behind it and ability to customize it, go for something like the samsung galaxy tab 10 (or the tab 2.0 but thats reather expensive)

If you want to get a solid 10" tablet and not pay big money this is the one i would go with. Its not top of the line, its not as flashy, it doesnt have as many features as the prime but it IS a solid tablet that will do what you want with the customization you want while leaving LOTS of extra money in your pocket.
If there would have been any valid rumours about Nexus 10" tablets I wouldn't have even considered getting another tablet. Same goes for phones now. My SGS3 will be the last branded phone. I want to go to Google all the way. Just so tired of companies putting their "own value" to the product and making updates slow and actually most of the extra is just annoying. Thank god Asus didn't make that much changes, only some useless apps which can't get rid off without rooting. But still updates are slower than with Google's Nexus. And Asus is the best of the rest.

Samsung is bad for updates, i agree, however because we get all the sources it is pretty quick before you get AOSP versions that are up to date with google, at least thats the way it is with my S2.
hey boy i know you spend a good amount of money to get the infinity but your comparing it to the nexus 7 which is a 7" device with almost no features with cheapness ooozing all over it . It's like buying a bmw and you want to trade it for a honda civic!!!!! .
Sure it will have more developer because it came out first plus its a google nexus reference design what do you expect. Wait another month and you'll see that there will be a lot of developer for this device.
Why so many useless thread concerning this type of question eg: should i trade my infinity? , what color do you like? , should i get the 32gb? Why not get yourself a brain so you can make a decision.
Ive read through some of the posts on here already but here is my dilemma. I do not own a tablet of any kind. Lately i have been wanting to get one for 2 reasons. Having somethhing to work on thats not a huge laptop. Note taking, apps, some games, and movies. The 2nd reason is for traveling, i want a tablet for my kids to watch movies on when we drive.
Now i starting looking into the Nexus 10, and love it, but with no expandable memory, i feel very limited getting it. Even at 32GB, - OS and formatting, i think you are only looking at around 27/27 GB of space. Considering an average movie is about 1.2 - 1.6 GB per, i wouldnt be able to put a whole lot on the nexus 10 before being maxed out.
Hence comes in the TF700, i love the fax that it has 32 GB + expandable memory, i feel very comfortable in that regard, but have read plenty of people with issues with the TF700. I also love the fact that i can get a keyboard with it as well.
My next thought it price.
A 32GB nexus 10 is 499, + tax and shipping through google im looking at around $550 out the door.
TF700, looks like i can get it through Amazon for around $470 with no tax where i live, and free shipping. So there is the cost factor that plays into my decision.
I would prefer to keep my devices fairly stock. I do own a LTE galaxy nexus and love it. I did unlock the bootloader, but i run it stock. I would prefer a OS that looks a lot like my phone but this isnt a requirement.
Any thoughts/advice/help would be appreciated.

If you're on the fence, I would maybe wait until a couple reviews come out. The Nexus 10 would be great with kids because of Android 4.2's new muli-user functionality. With regards to the storage.. I think the 32GB should be enough for what you need. Even without a microSD. I would buy the nexus 10, but if you're really on the fence just wait until a few days after it's released to watch some good reviews. :good:
The battery life added by the dock really helps out though with kids watching movies. I'm in the same boat, although my son has motion sickness, so no reading/watching/playing for him in the car, and his sister doesn't care about doing stuff in the car (yet). They're 4 and 2, respectively.
I also find that the tablet/dock combo makes it easier to just stand the device on a tabletop or something and let them watch. Gives them something to hang onto, as well, and when snapped shut, it's also a bit more safe than a 'naked' tablet.
32 GB is probably a lot of storage, but with all my clips of the Swedish Chef, the Muppets, Sesame Street, Family Guy (for me, not for the kids), Leprechaun Plop, Bobo the Rabbit and so and so forth, I'm looking into 12 GB! That's not even adding the Smurfs in wide-screen cinema deliciousness, and all the Ice Ages and whatnot.
No, I'm perfectly happy with the 700 and all its storage options. Also, don't forget the possibility for quickie file transfers by USB stick! I managed to get the Smurfs on a USB stick while on vacation -- shame the HD TV would play from USB stick... </geek hero>
I have a 12.5 inch laptop so I never bothered to get the keyboard for the tf700. The tf700 lags horribly and is very frustrating sometimes for simple web browsing. I was just getting to point of throwing my warranty away and installing cleanROm but I'm going to just get a Nexus 10. I hate that it doesn't have microSD but I don't think I'll miss it much because the microSD performance in the TF700 is so horribly slow I barely used it.

You didn't use CleanROM, though, so you're missing out on the performance this device can and will offer had you tried it. Out of the box comparisons taken as the norm -- which arevalid on XDA only for noobs or the faint-hearted -- maybe the Nexus would provide slightly better performance. I say 'maybe' because the file I/O is as bad on the Nexus devices (tested with N7 -- reference somewhere in the forums) as it is on the entire Transformer range. I would be very hesitant to jump on the Nexus 10 bandwagon -- chances are you'll find out you've not gained anything in terms of performance, and actually lost in terms of options, including but not limited to the storage options the 700 provides.
Oh, and ermmm.... I don't know where you get the slow MicroSD performance from, because the I/O issue concerns (mainly) the INTERNAL storage -- my memory cards are as fast as they are/were in other devices I put them in. No issues whatsoever.

Here's a novel idea. Research the specs on both. Look at issues raised in appropriate forums. Then pick the one that works for you.
Personally, I'm hoping you get the Nexus 10. I'd rather have people who can't make up their own mind, or do their own research, posting on another forum.
This really is a decision that can only be made by you... Besides that, it's really hard to say exactly how the Nexus 10 performs since nobody even has it yet! I mean actual users. It amazes me the number of people that are saying that the Nexus 10 is a "beast" and that it will easily outperform the TF700, etc - that is all speculation at this point. On paper, the TF700 looked like the perfect device too, but as we all know, it has issues that didn't show up in spec sheets (slow I/O, QC issues, etc).
However, if the keyboard dock and expandable storage are important to you, I'd go with the Infinity. We don't even know if the N10 will offer a keyboard dock - and if it does, we have no idea what kind of features it will have (extra battery, trackpad, USB ports, etc).
If you do go with the Infinity, I'd highly recommend the following:
- Buy it at a local Best Buy - this way, if you have any defects with the device, you can quickly and easily exchange it, without having to worry about shipping, etc...
- Get a SquareTrade warranty for it (with accidental damage coverage). For an extra $90 or so, you get 2 years of worry-free usage. It's also important for the next recommendation.
- Unlock the bootloader and install CleanROM as soon as you know that you have a defect-free TF700. With CleanROM, the device performs so much better than stock. Really, it's a must-have!
If you do the above, I think that you will be extremely happy with the TF700 and it's performance. Plus, you'll have the awesome keyboard dock and the expandability that you need.

We are going to be traveling for thanksgiving, so im planning on waiting until then to purchase one of these 2.
Im leaning to the nexus 10 32gb model, but well see if any specials or promotions pop up between now and then that might swing me the other direction.
Sounds like your issue is really about storage space.
I'm not up on all the Nexus 10 stuff. I'm sure it'll be a good device like the 7. Thus, I'm assuming no performance issues.
As for storage, the question is really is about how to do you plan on using your tablet. If you have a smartphone, that may help you. What kind of stuff do you store on it and how much of it. How many videos do you need to store on it versus want. So you want keep ten movies, that's about 16GB, which by your numbers, leaves 10GB for everything else. That's quite a bit storage for music and apps, unless you going to have a lot.
I think the issue is more of concern if you're going to be flashaholic or something like Boot Manager comes out for it so you can have and run mutliple roms.
If you don't want headache and working smooth and fast right out the box, get the Nexus 10. If you get the tf700 you going to have a lot of work ahead of you just to make it worth your money, even though the tf700 comes with more bells and whistles....

How do you know this? Have you used a Nexus 10? People sure are assuming a lot about the Nexus 10! How do we know that it doesn't have the same sort of I/O issues as the TF700? How do we know that it runs smooth out of the box once you start taxing it a little?
It might be true, but I'd wait until some XDA members get their hands on it before being so quick to assume that the Nexus 10 is going to be so perfect out-of-the-box...

This ^^ -- the Nexus 7 doesn't even fare that much better than the TF700, and it has a far smaller screen to power. I'm very glad with my purchase, and the Nexus 10 is not even on the radar.
im not sure why anyone hasnt mention On The Go. OTG is the ability to plug a USB memory stick into your tablet. there are actually two ways to do this. Tbe first is with an app you can buy for only a couple bucks, sorry i dont remember its name. The second is by unlocking and rooting your tablet.
i bought a nexus 7 when it first came out and knew id be traveking a lot later this year. so i roited and unlocked it. right niw i have 4 thirty-two gig sticks and 2 sixty-four gig sticks that i use with it on a regular basis.
ohh and sorry you do need an app called stickmount but its free.

I bought the huge adapter thing.
I hardly ever use it...actually I plugged it in once to check for function.
Works...it's kind of a waste of money for me anyway.
One of my least necessary purchases.
Android 4.2 was released to VOSP (or whatever it's called today.) Not being an Android user yet, I have no idea how long before a ROM will be available for the TF700 that includes the user profiles function. I too would LOVE that, having 2 kids.
I think Engadget's review was a great assessment of the two devices:
"In fact, other than a relative lack of resolution (1,920 x 1,200 vs. this guy's 2,560 x 1,600) the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 is, we think, an overall better package. It's thinner, lighter, faster, has a much better camera, offers better battery life (particularly if you opt for the keyboard dock) and, frankly, we'd take the brightness and contrast of that 600 nit, Super IPS+ panel over this one with its extra pixels."
People are really obsessed with screen resolution now though, like they are with camera megapixels. Even though most content (web pages, etc.) the higher resolution poses no advantage whatsoever.

I'm also in the same boat, trying to decide between the two. I have a thread over in the Nexus 10 forum and unsurprisingly, the nexus 10 is winning the argument there with most people complaining about the lag and memory problems on the Infinity.
I'm stlil undecided though as I really liked playing around the with my brothers TF201, so the Infinity should be a step up i'd imagine.
Tough choice!!!!!!! Arrggghhhh.

I've had an Android phone for 3 years now and am finally buying my first tablet. I've been going back and forth for weeks on whether to get an ASUS Transformer Infinity TF700 or a Google Nexus 10. There are a few important bullets you have..
Do you want the keyboard dock? If so, then get the Transformer. If you don't have a very portable laptop then I highly recommend it.
How do you use memory? Will you NEED the microSD slot? Do you use a lot? Do you want to transfer stuff easily? Then that is important.
Quad vs Dual core. This is less of a question more of a future-proofing issue. A quad-core tablet will go much farther when apps and other things become more capable and more demanding. (unless you are planning on getting the latest tablets frequently, then this is a moot point).

Eventually I think I would want the keyboard dock, but honestly, not having a tablet its a little hard to predict exactly how I'll use it. I do have an ASUS K55A laptop, which I consider to be decently portable, but I'm getting a tablet because it will obviously be a lot easier to tote around.
The only indicator of how I will use memory I have is my phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy II Epic Touch 16GB with an additional 8GB SDCard installed. I currently have all my music on it, but not much else. I have 8.6GB left in the main memory and 1.6GB left on the SDCard. I also have a SugarSync account that has 5GB on it, which I access as needed using the SugarSync App. I expect to start having it sync to my tablet so I have at least the main things I need available on the tablet offline. All that said, I'm probably not yet at the point where I NEED more than 32GB, but considering room for growth I may not be too far from it.
I am usually pretty good about making my toys last quite a while. I'm typing this on a desktop computer I bought over 8 years ago. When I buy stuff I like to invest in making sure it has the best chance of lasting as long as possible. In your opinion that might tip you toward the quad core, but slightly slower processor in the TF700?

I've been having this same dilemma.
I had a thread over in the Google Nexus 10 forum, so it's probably a little bias, but there are some good arguments if you haven't seen it already.

I still haven't made my decision to be honest. I'm still leaning towards the Infinity because of the dock and external storage capabilities whilst travelling, but the issues that have been brought to the table regarding the I/O and memory etc are making the choice difficult. It seems a lot of people complain about the device, yet nothing has been mentioned on any review websites which all praise the device. Strange.
I'm thinking of holding out until January in the hope something else new is announced at CES? Probably clutching at straws though. Also, I'm in the UK and the Infinity seems to have been discontinued here and I'm still not sure why! I can't find anything about it on Google or forums and Asus haven't got back to an email I sent a week ago. So I'm a little confused. I was hoping they might be releasing a replacement or something though, but I doubt it.
If I get it, it will have to be from Ebay and from the USA, so this again represents another risk in case the device has problems (hardware or software, of which both have been reported).
Hope I'm not repeating anything too much!

I wouldn't consider the 1GB RAM on the TF700 a huge con, as well as the back camera a pro. Same goes with the back camera on the N10, not a major con. The SD card however, is important, at least to me. I like to have all my music stored locally on my device as well as all my photos for back up.
Otherwise, if you're going to use the keyboard dock on the ASUS, get a new Chromebook or something.

The Padfone 2 is also quite cool, shame they didn't match the infinity for the screen though.
I'm debating between these two tablets as well.
I originally picked up the nexus 7, but unfortunately it wasn't nearly large enough for my needs.
My primary uses for the tablet will be to draw out design concepts. I think making my decision will be much easier once the nexus 10 is sold in stores. I'm currently leaning more towards the asus transformer infinity due to it's sleek design.
It really comes down to what you really need. I would go for a infinity for myself if I were to buy a tablet because of the micro sd card expansion and since it being a tablet, i would be storing some favorite movies, my entire song library (8GB) and thats about it. I think taking pictures with a tablet seems dumb but if I had a tablet, I would probably end up taking pictures and the infinity has a pretty good sensor, and it has a sleecker design. What would kill is the mono speaker. and i would not use it with the dock....actually, bot would be fit for me. lol dang. good thing i wont be buying a tablet until next year God willing.

Just received my Nexus 10. I have it and the TF700 in front of me right now and the N10 is beautiful and smooth. The N10 looks much better than I expected and the back is really nice and grippy. Wasn't too sure about keeping it but it looks like the winner so far. I'll miss having my microSD card, however I wasn't using it much because of the horrendous I/O speed. Still going to do more comparisons. If anyone wants some real world info or something to compare between the two let me know.
Just saying, quad core isnt always better than dual core. Infinity is Cortex A9 while the Nexus 10 is Cortex A15 based. This means that the Nexus 10 should be faster than the Infinity, even though Infinity is a quad core. Also, 5 mp cam to 8 mp really makes no difference, mainly because 1. Who takes photos with their tablet?... -.- Its huge. LOL and 2. Nexus 10's photos are AMAZING. (I have one)

okay so perfomancewise the nexus 10 is better. but i aint got a notebook atm and i will have to write a lot when i am not at home. what would you recommend? price doesnt matter to me. it has to be android and i saved 700 euros so it shall be enough. or do you know other devices which will fit my needs? btw what are the diffrences between infinity tf700t and tf300t? What about the galaxa note 10.1?

How did the two work out for you? Did the N10 rule overall? I'm considering the same pair and would appreciate any further info from a user who's had access to both.
I was in the same boat and eventually went for the infinity because:
1. 1920x1200 is good enough for me
2. I need the extra space (OTG is not that convenient for a lazy person like me)
3. premium feel
4. cost less (bhphotovideo had a discount 2 weeks ago)
5. available immediately! (N10 has been unavailable in my country a few days after launch)

How long have you had it now and how would you rate it after using it?
An incidental note: After looking at your list of devices, I'm astonished you went with a non-i device. Of course you do have that one HTC (or HTC One, was it? <g>). So I reckon you had already strayed from the *i* fold.

overall the N10 beats the infinity. even though the back isn't metallic it feels way better than the infinity. it runs better than the infinity on cleanrom.

Infinity on stock ROM is POS!!!
To be honest, I feel an iPad offers much better performance hardware-wise and overall usage (no your device is not compatible and more apps with tablet ui).
But decided to go with android to get something different even if I feel I'm getting an inferior product and inferior tablet ecosystem. Can't play most games I had on the iPad since its unavailable or incompatible but that's fine.
I've had the infinity since last summer, my friend recently bought a Nexus 10 and I've had time to compare the two. The Nexus 10 beats the Infinity hands down, out of the box. The biggest reason for this is the infinity's i/o issues that will cause frequent force closes when browsing the web and completely slam the system when updating apps. The nexus 10 runs smoothly and is very fast, didn't have occasional pauses like the infinity.
That said, I have my infinity unlocked, running cleanrom, and am running data to SD which eliminates the i/o issue. With these modifications, my tablet is every bit as fast (faster in some areas) and reliable as the N10. The Data to SD is key though, makes the infinity feel like a totally different tablet. I'm sure the N10 will have a great dev community and perhaps will end up faster in the end, but with Data to SD these 2 tablets are neck and neck. So if you plan on rooting and romming your tablet, I believe it is a toss up based on preference of features. If you plan to remain stock, definitely go for the N10

I have been given an opportunity to buy this tablet with the dock for not much money. It's second hand but used lightly and in great shape. The price is about 25% lower than the price of a NEW Asus Nexus 7 16GB in my country (no google play store here ).
My main concern is that it could be outdated. I had an Tegra 2 device (optimus 2x) and it was a pain to load any custom roms on it. I could only load Gingerbread roms on it. Sold it very quickly.
Is the TF101 showing its age? Does it run smoothly and are your batteries in good condition after this period? Any problems with apps? Games?
This would be my first tablet, so i'm not very much informed about them. I have been in the market for one a long time (1 year) and this is the first good opportunity I have seen. I would use it mainly for writing at college, some web browsing (flash running ok?) and casual gaming.
So would you recommend it now?

Only if you get it VERY cheap. And I say that as a TF101 owner.
The Tegra2 SoC is ****. It cannot play back standard 720p scene MKV-files without recording. Much less 1080p. XBMC and similar products don't want to support it because it lacks NEON-support which makes it easy to offload video-decoding to the GPU. Only thing I've gotten to play in a watchable state (but with occasional stutter) is Futurama.
It has also been plagued by unstable firmware updates, random reboots and sleeps of death. Asus has completely abondoned it and no further firmware updates are expected.
Your only chance of getting this tablet past ICS and onto JB (and whatever comes next, whenever that comes) is through third-party ROMs. If you get a model you can root. You may or may not be that lucky. Asus never unlocked the bootloader for the TF101.
So yeah. Unless you get it very cheap ($100 and less, keyboard dock included), I say no. Not worth it. There's much better things you can buy these days.

Basically you will be paying 75% of the price for 25% of the goods.
You will be paying almost full price for a discontinued product instead of one still receiving updates, and one being ensured good support, both from AOSP/Google and from the Android community.
At this price, you will regret buying it.
Again: I say this as a current TF101-owner.
Get the serial number, and make sure it is Not a 3G variant, haggle it down to 200-225 and it would be worth it IMO.
ONLY if you rooted and made it custom though.

Personally they work nearly the same except for video playback. Videos with the proper kernel did work, just not HD without stutter. Games and other things are wonderful. (Of course assuming you rooted and rommed it, both of mine are/were)

I'm going to disagree with all of you guys about the 200 USD Price... That's completely ridiculous for an used TF101. I got my TF101 2011, last black friday, at bestbuy for $249.99 and with all the cases and other stuff I got for that device it came around $270. (This is without the dock and it was brand NEW).
Now this device is outdated and I see listing on ebay for the device used for around $75 with dock. NOT Worth it; you can buy better stuff.
Clocked at 1.5GHz mine plays practically any 720p scene release I throw at it.
DTS support can be a pain but other than that, no issues.
I'm not exactly sure what and how much of it you need to smoke to find them on Ebay for $75 with dock though, docks alone go for that price or above.
I bought my TF101 from a friend and we both looked at current eBay prices. I agreed to $200 for tablet and dock and I agree that someone must be high if they think they can get that for $75 on eBay. Just doing a quick search, I see one without a dock that's at $177 with 6 hours left and a refurb with dock at $275 - these prices are pretty typical of what I've been seeing, too. Refurb's a bit high in price, but not ridiculous compared to the $250-ish average we'd been seeing.
Additionally, using the awesome eValuator app, $220-260 is average and that goes to $280-299 when I search "TF101 and dock".
Even the ones that are broken and won't power on are still going for over $100.
To the OP, I would recommend making a choice depending on if you want a 10" or 7" tablet. I don't think 25% less is a great deal if you really only want a 7" tablet. I was actually looking at the N7, too - when I was shopping, I went with the TF101 because I liked the keyboard dock, I trust my friend that nothing is messed up with it, and I wanted the 10" size. I'd tried some 7" tablets and since my phone is 5" the 7" tablet wasn't a big enough difference to appeal to me.
I also appreciated how easy the TF101 is easy to take apart if I want to replace the battery. I think it's a great design and I wish newer tablets still had these features.
I've had this for maybe a month and I have no complaints. I have watched Netflix in HD on it for a few hours at a time and had no issues - I don't know how this differs from other video playback, but perhaps I'm not picky, I thought it looked fine (and there wasn't any stuttering). I don't really play any intensive games on it, so I can't comment on that. I'm on stock ICS rooted right now, but going to mess around with ROMs.
Best Android tablet from it's time, hands down!
If you can get a refurbished one (they seemed to be everywhere at one point) then it's worth it. I found the tablet and the dock at different stores for under 250$ two different times and haven't had any issues with them whatsoever (I have 2). B&H had the refurb dock for 99$USD I think newegg was 120$CDN... but that was a while ago.
I'm running JB 4.2.1 and overclocked to 1.6GHz, watching 720p mkv natively in mplayer without any lag or issues. The dock makes it a must once you get used to it and learn the hotkeys and the extra battery time kicks ass! The USB ports means I can connect a usb to serial adapter to connect to devices at work, no need to carry around the laptop... or just connect external ntfs storage or whatever.
Overall I'm very satisfied, the only "problem" I have is the lack of updates from Asus but oh well, there are some awesome devs working here to bring us the best. I'd go watch the other forums on xda to see how active other tablets/devs are, compare your choices to make an informed decision.
My wife owns a Nexus 7, I own a TF101 w/ keyboard dock.
I'd take the TF101 hands down.
That isn't to say the Nexus 7 isn't a wonderful tablet. But I use my TF101 almost as much as a work computer; the larger screen and durable build, the nice speed even if it is a dual-core instead of N7's quad, the 1.5ghz (overclocked via EOS 4 Rom) speed.... I love this thing.
I love my wife's Nexus 7 mainly because it is small enough to fit in some pockets and very light.
You have to figure out what you want from your tablet and proceed accordingly. I'm a firm believer that trailing edge technology often is a much better deal than chasing after the newest (the minute you leave the store it too is trailing edge!).
The price range on these is almost NEVER below $200, and that is without a keyboard. The poster w the neg comments early on is either badly misinformed about everything he mentioned or just trolling. Easiest way to test that thesis? Go to either Amazon or Ebay (w/ sales where time is almost out) and note the price ranges there. Even Craigslist, where I got mine for a steal ($225 w/ keyboard). Read the other comments, make a list of what you expect from your tablet, and go for it. Both tablets are great in different ways.
And did I mention my wife says she sorta covets my TF101?
One add'tl edit.... The TF101 has TWO SD-Card slots, a mini-HDMI output, TWO USB ports (on keyboard), and a few other jingles. Nexus 7, like its competitors (iPad, Nook, and KindleHD) have few to none of them. Just another thought...

Also, I got mine for $250 new in 2011 (That was when this tablet was good/ at the top of the market)- it was a black friday doorbuster. The BB Mobile store near my house had stock when I went in.
There are better tablets out there that will go on sale and I personally wouldn't buy a USED TF101 unless if it was $100 or less.

Newegg has the TF101 for $250 refurbished right now, and the dock for $99.
Big sales really can't be used to determine going price and market value. eBay averages are really the most accurate measure of what people are currently asking and what people are willing to pay.
I just cashed in a a Newegg super deal a few days ago, myself - and that's what it was, an awesome super deal that was way below the market price.
If a person wants to hold out for a super sale that may or may not happen that's their choice.

Remember, I am not from the States. Prices here (Croatia) are much higher.
For example, I can buy a 9.7 inch Prestigio multipad with 1 GHz and 1 GB RAM for 350 USD - USED.
I'll probably buy the TF101 I found and live with it. If not, I will sell it for profit, because I can probably make some 50-100 bucks of it.

I'll keep my tf101 until I stop setting value in it, but Asus/nvidia seriously oversold the thing and I'd be lying of I said I was 100% happy about it when I got it delivered.
It gets better with Roming though.

you, my friend, are a liar and/or a fool. you will NEVER find a tf101 "under $100" unless it was broken. you will also NEVER see a new one for $150. period. look at ebay....cheapest place to find anything most of the time. good luck finding one with the keyboard for under $275. and good luck finding one without the keyboard under $200. USED. most of them listed that are $100-$150 are BROKEN. learn to read. cracked screen...chipped case....sound doesn't work....the $100 to $150 ones are severely abused transformers. if you can get one for $250-$300 with the keyboard dock, you have a good tablet that's worth the money. period. if you're not completely retarded and can follow basic instructions from this very website, you can then put the newest CM10 nightly build on the tablet, overclock it to 1.5Ghz or more, use "swapper" to make a 1GB swap partition, and you have - in theory - a 1.5Ghz, 2GB ram tablet with 2 usb ports, a keyboard, an sd slot, micro sd slot, hdmi out, the newest android OS....and in the 10.1" form factor. you can't find that ANYWHERE else on the market. people on here that say otherwise simply don't know what they're talking about. stock, it's a good tablet. modded, it's by far the best buy for your money and will smoke most others on the market that are three times the price (you know, the big goofy white ones) in performance, features, and all-around look and feel.
Just to update you guys... I have bought the tablet today. I like it pretty much. Finding the screen a bit awkward when using in portrait mode though.
It's kinda heavy, but I'll get used to it, after all, it took me some time to get used to a 4.65" mobile phone screen. I rooted it and I am still using the custom rom, as I usually do with all the stuff I buy. Eventually I will put a custom ROM on it because I had some serius hickups and a reset.
As far as the price point goes, I think that I couldn't have bought a better tablet for this price. I paid about 270 USD for it and it even has some of the plastic foil on it. Not even a scratch.
Now im off to find a custom ROM that has the ability to use all the buttons on the keyboard and thats overclockable.
Google Now and pinch to zoom in emails would be great too.

I know you've already bought it, but I wanted to chime in that comparing my TF101 to my son's Nexus 7, I'd take the N7.
I liked the TF101 a lot, but as others mentioned, the stock firmware had become unstable. I had apps crash and freeze, even when I wiped and reflashed it. Unfortunately, the 4.2 ROMs are okay but lack some features. For example, I've seen some complained that the dock keyboard isn't fully functional. One of my complaints with the custom ROMs that I've tried is that Google Talk crashes anytime I try voice/video chat.
I'll still use, but I admit that I covet a newer tablet with the quad core.
Keyboard dock and Google Talk fully working here on 4.2, although I'd rather use Google+ Hangout for video chat.
