When you say "Android 4" that doesn't tell us much because JellyBean was 4.1 to 4.3 and KitKat was 4.4. Do you have JellyBean or do you have KitKat?
The feature you are looking for is called "double tap to wake/sleep".
There are many different options to enable this feature for android 4.
Just do a google search for:
"Double tap to wake for KitKat"
That should find more than one app or method to enable this feature, try all the things you find in your search results.

I have found a nice Torch Light setting. If you set it 'on', when the screen is off, a long-press on the Volume-Up key starts the light. A press on the Volume-Down key turns it off, and there is a configurable time-out too.
Here's what's odd: I cannot find it in the settings anywhere, but found it though adding an 'Activity' shortcut through SSLauncher (my shell of choice). This one is named TocrhLight IIRC, in case anyone wants to install the free version and try it.
I have found these Activity settings to be a huge mine of hidden features, or at least shortcuts to deeply buried settings. In this case, I think the feature is actually hidden. Room for a dedicated app just to set this setting, I feel.
Apologies if this is obvious or posted elsewhere, but I could not find it anywhere.
Hello,
thank you very much, that was what i was missing from my note 2.
I used Activity-Launcher from Play-Store to start this Setting.
Regards
Robert

Can anyone talk me through the steps to set this up?
Download nova launcher. Long press on desktop and add shortcut. Then choose activities choose settings and from there torchlight. Thats it.
But its not working flawless. This morning i needed the flashlight but didnt work. I had to unlock my phone andnlock it again to make it work.

Hm, might be useful.
Though personally I'll stick to Flashlight HD. It has a widget which is a flashlight toggle.
If you are rooted and have xposed framework installed, you can access the hidden setting via installing Wanam Xposed from the Google store.
Just a heads up.

What I'd like to see is a super bright torch like in the CM roms but without root.
The difference is astounding.

Any experience with long term use and potential LED damage/overheating? Also does anyone know why I wouldn't have any torch setting or app? Using Verizon note 3 and would love this mod

You can download the Activity-Launcher app (as Rivendel noted) and open it. Scroll down to 'Settings'. This opens a loooooong list. Scroll waaaaay down to 'Torch Light' (there are two IIRC), and press it. The settings screen is shown. Sett the settings and 'back' to get out.

Is this working reliably for some people? For me it's not unfortunately. It usually works after I have just turned off the device, but when it's been idling for a while then I can't activate the flashlight this way. Bummer.
Torchlight
Since I upgraded to SM-N9005][NOTE3][KitKat 4.4.2][XXUENA6]_BoBCaTROM_EVO_v4.1 it does not work. Probably it is a bug and hopefully soon will be fixed. The corresponding setting appear in WanamXposed but does not work. Does anyone perhaps has a fix for it?

What do you mean by "does not work"? The setting page does no longer show up?
Since on the actual "working" of the torchlight things are already complex on 4.3 - the torchlight only works if the CPU is not in deep sleep! (this however probably explains why that setting is hidded).
I am still using that torchlight with a trick - since only the Power and Home buttons can wake the CPU from seep sleep I press on Power twice SLOW, and only after that I press and hold Volume Up - that way I still get to start the torchlight with a single hand :good:
[hidden setting] flashlight settings
I mean that thoug setting page show up, switch on, but no results. I long-press volume-up and there is no torchlight. I reached the settings in WanamXposed [hidden setting] flashlight settings but no result. I use 4.4.2 Kitkat. Probably it is no linger supported in Kitkat.

I just added a widget through widget locker, which I can interact with. Works great, power button > tap widget :good:
Using an app called Torchie, just press both 'volume buttons' together to turn on/off torch anytime. It runs as a background service and just works anytime, even when screen off (if enabled from Torchie Settings). It kinda make your phone feel like a conventional battery operated torch.

I've looked everywhere for an answer to this, but so far to no avail. Is there a way to manually disable this Knock On feature included in the stock software? I'm running CyanogenMod 11 nightlies and it causes my phone to crash 50% of the time and gets annoying after a while. I looked through all the system files on the phone and can't even find a pointer. Be as complicated as you want with your answer. Thanks.
P.S. This is not a new problem with CM11. Did this with 10.2 as well.
On the stock software its easy !! Go to configurations > general > gesture > on/off screen (its the first option) !!
Hope i could help:good:

If your still trying to figure it out i found it after about 3 hours of searching its located in settings under display and lights just uncheck "double tap to wake"
Disable Knock on / Knock Off
Go to settings, device, display and lights, and uncheck double tap to wake. Then settings , personalization, Interface, Status bar, and uncheck double tap to sleep..
Worked for me.. Hope this helps
Thank you!
Is there a way to disable knock on during calls only? My face keeps unlocking my phone and apps are opened or settings changed. It's annoying.
Found a FIX disable Tap 2 Wake/ Knock code
Hi all, I have a LG F220K (LG Optimus GK). :silly:
And I'm running a modified version of LG G2 CM11 (currently on M6) on my mobile.
After flashing CM11 ROM I figured that the option to deactivate the Tap to wake/ Knock code feature is not available in the Settings menu itself.
The Tap wake function is something I hate as it turns on display and press buttons during calls, so somehow I was lost with all the forums having only questions yet no answers...
This is How I sorted it!!! (Sorry, I am not allowed to post images or links as a newbie)
1. Please install Kernel Tweaker from the play market (It's free).
2. Open the Kernel Tweaker, access the main menu of the app by tapping the top left hand corner.
3. Browse through to Kernel (Under Kernel Params) tap open.
4. You will see that it has two options Under Kernel Tweaks "Double Tap 2 wake" and "Sweep 2 Wake", there will be two ticked boxes.
5. Untick both boxes and exit!!!
Now you can tap on screen like no tomorrow but Tap to Wake/ Knock code is no more... :highfive:
A THANK wouldn't hurt!!!

I 'm looking for that answer too..
Me as well! I hate Knock-On as it always turns on the screen in my pocket.
I tried Kernel Tweaker but there arent any options under Kernel Tweaks for me to choose from. Im running C-Rom 7.1 which is CM based I believe.
Is there an .apk or sys file I can disable? What kind of file and what is the name of the file/code that is responsible for Knock-On?

You can probably try with "G2 Tweaksbox", it uses the xposed framework and has many tweaks available... hope this helps

How to disable the Knock On feature on LG devices…: https://youtu.be/gIgHPYeH6gs
Could anyone develop an app that reproduces the power button's function? I really would like to turn off the screen WITHOUT locking the device and turning off the "smart lock" function. I have already tried almost 20 apps and even with tasker, without success. I don't know what to do..
This will be useful for all who want to use "smart lock" feature integrated by Google, like trusted devices and places, face recognition, physical contact.
These are automatically disabled if you use any of the app/widget that "locks the screen".
I'm kindly asking someone who knows how to make a simple app on Android :fingers-crossed:
Thanks in advance!
@TheArt. try secure settings with tasker.
Hi Thahim, I already tried that plugin with no success, there is no option like "turn off the screen" in secure settings.
Did you tried LMT Launcher and input the Arbitrary Key for the Power Button? If works for me, since I'm using it as of now...
:good:
Seems very interesting, i'll try later!

Can you explain it step by step? Because I don't know what to write in the menu "arbitrary key" . and I see there is no "double tap" gesture which I would like to use.

I tried that app several times, but it behaves like the other apps on the play store.
I managed it with LMT ! The only thing that could be better is that there is no "double tap" gesture in LMT, i'm using the X gesture right now.

Anyone using Android auto? I've noticed that when using it, the new double tap to wake feature doesn't seem to work. I tried all the different screen on settings in the app, but it still does it.

Yep, doesn't work for me either in Android Auto. Double tap and lift both enabled in Moves and working except in Android auto. Was wanting the double tap as my phone mount obscures the power button.

Hey everyone,
Does anyone know if it's possible to make the Google Camera open with double tapping power button from a screen off action? I much prefer the Google Camera at this point and it would make everything awesome if we could.
I m rooted and have Magisk if that helps.
Let me know your thoughts!
Thanks!
When you double tapped for the first time, it didn't ask you which app to open? Because it should. Maybe you chosed stock camera app as default. Go and clear stock camera app defaults. You will find it in Setting -> Apps.

Oh no, I've got it once screen is on. But I'm curious about the one when you double tap from screen off. It auto launches the OnePlus Camera.
Have u tried using quick gestures?
I'm looking for a solution also. From the lockscreen double tap power always launches the OnePlus Camera, when the screen is unlocked it actually launches the default camera. Gestures do work, but are rather cumbersome and require you to unlock the phone when drawn.
