Ambient mode - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

Could ambient mode be ported to this device?
I know we have the pixel stand as the trigger on pixel devices for it to work but could it not be somehow changed to activate when using another charger?
I'd love to have it on my p3 but don't want to fork out the expense for a pixel stand, especially now Google are giving it to some devices being charged normally.

Samsung S7 to Pixel

I'm curious if there are any forum members that replaced the Samsung S7 with the Google Pixel. I have one pre-ordered and I'm glad for the wait, but I would like to hear from those that are moving from Samsung to this phone. I've had stock Android before with the Nexus 6P. How do the two compare as far as battery life, photos and day to day functionality.
I've seen the YouTube reviews, but they are mixed and who knows if they are paid reviews.

Here are my first impressions. I posted this originally on TheVerge
Setup of this phone was the fastest I have ever done. More apps are taking advantage of the Google Drive backups and using the cable to plug directly into my S7 Edge allowed me to move over 3.3 GB of data in 3 minutes. Additionally I had to install 92 more apps which seemed to just fly through. I had to sign in to a few but DashLane helped speed that process up
No more grinding down to a stall when installing apps. One thing that annoyed me about pretty much all Android devices especially the S7 Edge was the fact the entire system will just slow down to almost a complete standstill when apps where updating. Not the Pixel, didn't even realize app updates where happening in the background. I can actually use my phone while an app is updating.
Hey look! The Pixel can charge my Galaxy S7. This may come in handy in a crunch with my iPhone
It is still going to take me a while to get used to the button placements on the Pixel after using the S7 which had them reversed. I still think there are capacitive buttons in there to sometimes as I press the non functional chin.
Wow my Tile now works correctly. It ill now ring my phone when I press the button like it is supposed to do. This feature never worked on the S7 Edge.
Whatever DAC their using in this phone sounds great. Had me lit on Young Jeezy driving to work. However, where is the damn equalizer?
I prefer Action Launcher to the Pixel Launcher. Swiping for the shortcuts seems more intuitive than long pressing.
Built in Visual Voicemail is sweet. Maybe I can finally stop using Google Voice for VM. I would like transcription though which would be nice.
I dig the notification sounds
Fingerprint sensor is so much better than the S7 Edge
Double Tap to open an notification at the lockscreen. Geez here have you been all my life. Its the small things.
All in all I'm liking this phone. After being in the Samsung camp for my past 2 phones S6 Edge and S7 Edge I am happy to be back to the Googlish way of doing Android.
I came from a Samsung Galaxy S7 and love it. I am on Verizon but I bought my Pixel from the Google Store. Battery life for me anyway is better despite having a smaller battery in the Pixel. I could definitely get 2 days out of this phone. I am a light to medium user. I am actually sick at home so I haven't tried out the camera much. I thought I would miss at first some of TouchWiz features, but I don't miss them at all. Day to day use: everything works great as expected from a high end smartphone. No issues yet. I am glad I made the jump. The stock ui is a nice to have back. I had the Nexus 5 a while back. Glad to be back to Google's stuff. I do miss the waterproofing though. But I will manage.
Bruce,
Thanks. I'm a medium to heavy user. I normally put 2.5 to 3 hours of screen on time daily and I make it through the day. I look forward to getting the pixel at the end of November. I trying to wait for Google and other break down and order from Verizon.

I was a die hard Samsung user. I had the S4, S5, S6 and the S7. Before that I had the first Nexus out. When I heard about the Google Pixel and that it was high end hardware I thought I'd give it a try and get back to the Google Android experience. Since I've had it I love it and am not looking back. Battery life is better, it is more responsive, camera is great. I too thought I'd miss some of the features on the S7 but not the case at all. I see this phone offers a lot of good features out of the box and very customizable.
Don't regret the move at all.
Edit: and the fingerprint sensor is more accurate and responsive.

I never have any problem with my S7 edge with exynos as far as phone stalling....
---------- Post added at 05:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:15 AM ----------
for what its worth, the S7 edge is the only phone right now with the longest lasting battery. I had the I7 for a month and would constantly have to charged by 5 pm everyday (unplug at 7) my S7 edge would get through 8-9 pm with 41% left. Honestly, the only thing that hold me back from getting the pixel 1. its made by HTC 2. no Always on display. 3. IP68 rating 4. dual speakers...my S7 edge and i'm sure S7 exynos variant can be flash to utilize dual speakers.
I had the 6p a while back too, if its not for the snapdragon 810 with the 28mm architecture, I would've kept the phone, Samsung perfected the 14mm architechture with their in-house chip and its a wonderful experience now.
Things I miss from the S7:
- Wireless charging
- microSD card capabilities
- Folders in the stock app drawer (fixed with Nova Launcher, paid version)
- Charging status LED (fixed with Light Manager, free version)
- Gear S2 capabilities (moved onto Android Wear, but still)
- Functional "Smart Switch". Didn't want to work, so I had to transfer via Bluetooth and manual setup
- Physical "home" button for waking up screen during calls (I'm hesitant to press power button on important calls as that's my "hang up" button)
- Root/Xposed (won't be long though)
- Apps broken with Nougat (R.I.P. Llama)
Things I love on the Pixel:
- Far better camera
- USB type C
- MUCH faster phone in general. Hardly any lag at all. S7 lagged big time when I traded it in, still not sure why.
- Official Google support
- Google apps not as forced as Samsung apps (automatic photo backup for example is easy to prevent)
- Default apps perform better
- No bloat. S7 had some NFL crap and 3-4 games that I couldn't remove. Pixel had none of that. Bought from Verizon too.
- No TouchWiz stupidity (remember "I'll just save this selection as default without asking you if you wanted that"? Pixel asks every time if you want)
Comparable between both:
- Screenshots (power + home for S7, power + Volume Down on Pixel)
- Internal storage (both were 128 GB)
I'm sure there's more, but that's off the top of my head. Bottom line is Pixel is far better at what it's designed for, but I do still miss the microSD and wireless charging capabilities. I can live without them however.
This is really interesting feedback as I am trying to decide right now between the Pixel and the S7.
The two things I am pretty interested in knowing about are battery life and durability (Ive had an S4 for years, dropped it plenty of times and while there are a few dings around the edges, that phone keeps on rocking).
Anyone else have thoughts after having used both phones?
I also came from the s7.
My only thing I really miss is my Tumi case I had for it. I'm hoping they will make one for the pixel. Otherwise the pixel performs better, great photos, fingerprint is very fast. I would get lagging all the time on the s7, probably touch wiz related.
I've had 2 instances where my Bluetooth quit playing music from Google play on my Toyota Camry, I've had to restart my car to get it to connect again. I'm still troubleshooting if it's the car, Google play or the phone. I've used Spotify in the past and never had the issue.
My battery is much better and quick charging also works great. I have no problem getting through the day without running my battery down
I have a galaxy gear that appears to work perfectly with it.
I don't have an SD card on my s7 and haven't needed one. So that's not an issue. I have however used up my Dropbox 10gb in the past so the unlimited photo storage is nice.
I've had mine for about a week now and just sent my s7 in for the edge up.

coming from S7 Edge you will NOT like the volume level while you're on speaker phone calls or youtubing on the toilet lol ,,,,I am waiting for volume mod on this thing,,other than that you'll love the phone,,even if she doesn't wireless charge,,oh also the charging times it's bull sheet,,,i timed it 15 mins 7 hours more like 30 to 45 mins charge still fast but not that google bullcrap fast,,,standby battery time it's pretty good better than S7 Edge kind of like the iPhone on standby where your battery percentage seem to not go down too fast,,anyone agree?

Cons:- no Waterproofing, no wireless charger, no SD slot, no removable battery, no IR blaster, no dual stereo speakers very less features no themes support for example, big bezels, looks ugly from behind and very overpriced.
just very basic bore-bones boring Google Pixel.
you can get Pixel launcher and Google assistant for FREE if you Root and install custom ROM so whats the big deal?
Pros:-
Excellent Screen, Excellent Camera, very fast and smooth, fast updates, excellent build quality, unlocked boot loader. i love the finger print scanner on the back with gestures, swipe up and down.
but the very high price outweighs the good points.
even OnePlus 3, ZTE Axon 7, Moto Z play, Honor 8 are better buy less price more software and hardware features.
if you want to know which is better between Galaxy S7 Edge and Google Pixel the answer is very clear galaxy S7 win's hands down.
youtube channel's like CNET are biased.
people think it's the iPhone from far away or even from just couple feet away. Phone is awesome just the hardware doesn't have an identity yet lol
Curious to hear more about the battery-life comparisons between the S7 (non-Edge) and Pixel. In this thread a few have said the Pixel wins, but I've read plenty of other reviews that suggest they're on par when it comes to battery life/SoT.
Battery life and Camera quality are the top-two priorities for me -- sounds like camera quality is about equal although the S7 does offer RAW support, which AFAIK the Pixel does not (at least not without a third party app). S7's default camera app also seems a lot more comprehensive than the Pixel's

Good to know. Thanks. And is SoT about the same between them with, say, heavy use in one day?
I can't say--I have not done an SOT test as all my use is mixed. A heavy use day for me is 3 hours of SOT and just about any phone can handle that. I did have occasion to charge the S7 during the day. That's rare with my Pixel.
I went from the stock Unlocked S7, which ide expect to be the closest to the Play Store Pixel - both lacking carrier bloat. Having said that, the Pixel outperforms the S7 hands down on battery life and performance. I don't have anything scientific, but I simply replaced my S7 with a pixel as my daily driver. I didn't change my habits (if anything I use my Pixel more). At the end of the day my S7 would be in the ~20% range. Currently at the same time everyday my Pixel is at ~60%. The difference is drastic and very noticeable.

Mate 9 after 6P

Hello.
Im thinking of swithing from an 6p to a mate 9. The reason is that, i think everybody knows that 6p has shutdown problems and they are driving me crazy. I realy enjoy sing my 6p, but the time has come.
Is here somebody who came from a 6p to a mate9? Pros and cons over the 6p?
there isnt much information about user experience comparing them two, thats why im asking it here. Is it worth it or not?
the bigger battery, "stereo kind of" speakers, large display, less bezzels, and kirin 960 vs 810 , it is allready very tempting.:good:
I ordered my brand new Mate 9 and it is going to be in my hands tomorrow evening. I will share my experiences asap.
I had the 6p for a while.
6p pros...
Better speakers, the mate 9 speakers are good but not near as good as the Nexus.
More development
Stock Android, if you prefer that
Mate 9 pros...
Better and bigger display
Better fingerprint sensor
The camera appears to be better
Very long battery life
Expandable storage
IR Blaster
I actually like EMUI, it has a lot of neat features
I think the Mate 9 looks better
Faster and smoother than the 6p
If I think of more, I'll report back.
Rooted Nexus 6p (RRemix MM rom) user to rooted Mate 9 (MHA-L29 C432B138) user. Best decision I ever made. I am on AT&T. Both my Pebble Time Steel and Samsung Gear S3 Classic work great with it. Honestly, zero hiccups. I use Nova Launcher Prime and a handful of other applications for notifications/ease. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
I agree with the gentleman above. Honestly, you will love the extra battery life, the amazing camera, and smoothness. The wifi is also stronger/more consistent. The display is actually pretty damn amazing despite being 1080P LCD.
Honestly, the developers are coming...trust me. So much has happened especially thanks to @duraaraa. The Mate 9 is hands down the best phone I've ever had. I have zero regrets.
yes, the speakers, the display, and the developement for the 6p are pros.
But as it seems the Mate 9 will be a good upgrade, till that time when this years flagships will be launched.
After 6 months ill maybe give mate9 back to my provider, and upgrate to a more top notch phone. till that im almost sure i can live without flashing roms, and e.t.c, and get used to EMUI. As when i took LG G4 after Nexus 5.
and is the difference in display quality noticable as coming from qhd to full hd?
Came from 6p and had the shut down issue. You might be over exaggerating a little. Mine would randomly shut down under 10%. Wasn't a huge deal.
I've used the 6p off and on since release. Only reason I was using last couple of months because I cracked my mate 8.
Battery life is the biggest pro for me. After using the mate 8 for so long, going back to a smaller battery had me charging a few times a day versus maybe once a day. Always searching for a charger. I am a media/data hog.
Biggest pro for Nexus is the modding community.
Most important for me is tlthe mate series can take a beating and the only phone that makes me rethink the 2k display. Nothing competes with Samsung flagship displays but this is a quality 1080p panel.
Plus with T-Mobile binge on and it's 480p, I could care less besides bragging rights.
Mine 6p is shutting down even at 60%, and i can turn it on only when i find a charger. And it is hard when i havent got the charger by hand, and i need a phone. Thats why im searching for a good upgrade. I dont want an s7 edge or anything else. The only phone that felt in my eyes was mate 9. The bigger battery and performance comparision sn810 vs kirin 960.
And maybe the developement, and roms will start to appear here after time.
I got mate 9 pro after the 6p because of the shut down issues. No complaints this far

Got the Mate 9 after my 6p went into bootloops. Huawei will replace but couldn't wait 2 weeks without a phone so bought the Mate 9. Everything mentioned above is right on. It is a great phone. I really like EMUI. The black theme makes it even better. Battery is great compared to 6p. Phones are like new girlfriends, there are things you like and dislike in the beginning. It takes time to get used to the change The battery was the #1 reason I went with the Mate 9 and not the V20. Glad I did.
Came from a 6P also and I love this phone. I do miss the Nexus development but this phone has been great so far, and I actually don't mind running emui. Would love to see AOSP on this bad boy but I can actually live with the phone as is.

Upgraded to the Huawei Mate9 because my Huawei 6P has been wonderful! The Mate9 has newer better specs and amazing form factor! Keeping both and look forward to root, flashing, etc...

I really love EMUI as many things are baked into the system. But it's not perfect. You'll find many small things missing. Third party music controls on LS for example.
I actually smashed screen on Nexus 6P and also dropped in loo.. Still works but actually got the Mate 8 and I love it some much going to sell and get Mate 9 I love Emui and solid performance of the mate 8 and with Resolution of Mate being a lot lower have not noticed one bit..

Launcher: Nove Prime.
LED Notifications: Light Manager or Light Flow Legacy. I went back to Light Manager because it's just simpler/faster to customize. I use the "always on" feature to have my LEDs come on. Light Flow allows you to prioritize. It's really a matter of preference. Use the fastest setting or 1 second setting or always on feature in each app if you want it to work properly. Also, the only colors that work are Blue, Cyan, Yellow, White, Orange, Red, Pink, and Green. If you venture too far from their spectrum, no light will show up. TIP: make sure not to use any of the custom battery settings for the LED because that will mess with the notifications. Just leave the stock battery feature to monitor that LED going from Red, Yellow, Green; I found this annoying, but at least this way it works consistently. That is the biggest thing I miss about my Nexus 6P - the stronger/brighter LED that actually blinked faster rather than pulsed like the Mate 9. I can't stand pulse (you have to leave this on in the main settings for the LED to work), so I use the "Always On" settings in either of these LED apps to be able to easily see my LED notification.
File Manager: Solid Explorer (best file/root manager app period recommended by top developers on XDA).
Music: Spotify.
Weather: 1Weather (has solid widgets for time, weather, different locations and customization for appearance).
Lock widget: Nova lets you create your own custom icon for this under Actions and it works instantly. Saves battery and the waste of using a separate widget app.
Flashlight: Tiny Flashlight + LED - great widget with custom icons that works well.
Ad-free App: AdAway - you need to be rooted, but it works once you have restarted your phone, enabled it, and made sure it is in the ALLOWED apps under Ignore Optimizations in Settings.
Casting App: Bubble UPnP - hands down the best app for casting to a smart tv, dlna device/dongle, and chromecast device.
Video Player: MX Player Pro.
Tech Apps: XDA Forums and Geekbytes Pro (the best tech info app that compiles tech info from multiple places like Droid-Life, Phandroid, Android-Headlines, etc).
Wall Charger Voltage/Power Checker: Ampere.
Off the the top of my head, those are the most useful. If you have a Pebble or Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch, I know a bunch of apps that make them much more useful. PM me for that or any other questions regarding specific apps. You don't really need any battery saving/optimizing apps like Greenify or Doze because Nougat has built in Doze (the optimization, etc). You can, however, download Wakelock Detector to see what apps keep your device awake in different scenarios. That can be pretty useful at narrowing down battery hogs. All the best! :highfive:
Another former Nexus 6p-turned-Mate 9 user here.
To be fair, I really loved the design, screen, camera and the stock experience of the 6p. Have used it for 1+ years and would want to keep it longer. Unfortunately the phone becomes increasingly unreliable as the battery failed me a few times when it reaches 20%.
Changed to Mate 9 a couple of weeks ago and never looked back. Here's what stood out for me for this phone:
- dual sim, with 64GB built-in storage. Can run 2 sims comfotably in one phone without having to worry about storage
- Great battery life, even with 2 sims (Sim 1 running 4G) and with wifi and BT on as well
- Super fast charging!
- Screen is good, don't miss the higher res of 6p
- Camera is decent, comparable to 6p for normal lighting. Though i feel 6p performs better under low lighting. The monochrome shots of Mate 9 are beautiful.
- Audio quality from the earjack is very good and that is important for me as I listened to music regularly. Speakers are not as bad as what some reviews says
- Speed and memory management is good, especially considering it's not stock android. EMUI is not too intrusive either.
The only thing i would miss from 6p is the regular updates for Android. But then given how Google has been messing up the regular updates and Nougat, stability might be a good thing! And Mate 9 would have been perfect if it's water resistant/proof.

So, the stock pulse LED from system settings overrides all battery LED changes. So, it's pointless to modify the battery LED settings in Light Manager or Light Flow. The stock colors change based on battery level from RED (0-29% (I think)) to YELLOW (30-89%) to GREEN (90-100%) when plugged in for charging. So, if you attempt to modify the battery LED colors within one of these apps, it will either do nothing or mess up the other notifications.

In my case I am not able to use many colors consistently. Like yellow or cyan etc. When I set colours to yellow for third party apps and do the test the colour appears is always random like red or green. Any idea? App: Light flow legacy

Hold anywhere on the screen where there is space for an ICON. Then select WIDGETS. At the top you will see, Nova Action, select that. Then select Screen Lock. That's it. It will create a Screen Lock icon that locks your screen. If you hold this icon, you can EDIT. This will allow you to rename it or have no name (I have no name so it looks more like a widget icon than an app icon). The awesome part is that you can have a swipe action for it also. So, this allows you to swipe up on the icon and it can do pretty much any NOVA option you want. Mine is currently set to SHORTCUTS > Directions (to my home) using Google Maps. If you select the icon, you can change it to any icon you want.

In my case I am not able to use many colors consistently. Like yellow or cyan etc. When I set colours to yellow for third party apps and do the test the colour appears is always random like red or green. Any idea? App: Light flow legacy

You're very welcome.
Light Flow Legacy is tricky because some of the color options given don't align up correctly to the Color Scale that matches the Mate 9 LED spectrum, so honestly, you just have to keep testing until you find the color that works within the 12-15 colors that are listed. I prefer Light Manager for this reason because it does the exact color and you don't need to guess.
Funny enough I was originally considering a 6P. I was looking to transition from iOS and a Nexus device looked like the most logical step to take.
Then I started reading about the battery shutdown issues with Nougat beta... and along came the Mate 9 to tempt me so here I am. Brilliant device.

Ok Google unlocking phone.

I am pleasantly surprised to find out that Ok Google will wake up and unlock the Pixel 2. Is this one of the few phones now that this is possible? I know from an awake phone it's possible but it works on my Pixel 2 unawake ?

I haven't understood the second question.
But you can wake up and unlock your phone in many old devices like the original Moto X (2013) the Nexus 5X and 6P (2015) and some Samsung Galaxies and Motorolas. It doesn't matter for how many hours they were resting with the screen off.
Not all the manufacturers enable an always listening feature in their phones hardware and also have a Google app with the OK Google always on option.
(Example: my ex Z5 Compact didn't have this feature).
So phones must have activated the Snapdragon voice activation and prepare the Google app to enable this feature or something like that.
Battery life is practically not impacted by this feature in general. But of course each feature pulls some of it.
Active Display (Ambient Display Always On) and Always Listening (Say "Ok Google" at any time) are essentials features to me that work when the phone is resting in deep sleep.
And they both appeared with the original Moto X by Motorola/Google as far as I remember. (Best ergonomic phone ever as well)

I thought the Nexus had to be charging for that. I know the Moto did.
In Nexus 5 this was not supported. But in 5X and 6P it was working and perfectly. I've been using this function since the 5X. I always use this for create reminders or set timers for the pasta cooking time etc.
I don't know about the Nexus 6
Now in the Pixel 2 I'm suffering sometimes a PIN request I don't know why. Might be for more security.

when you say it will "wake up and unlock" you're referring to the phone being locked with pin / pattern / etc. and the screen is off, correct?
yes, most phones that i'm aware of will not do this unless the phone is plugged in or the screen is on.
however, some other phones do have other options e.g. the samsung phones can "wake up and unlock" to s-voice or bixby and once unlocked you can say "ok google".

Always on Display on Oneplus 6

Hi,
i'm new with oneplus, and i've just preorder the brand new oneplus 6.
Do you know if it's possible to have a "always on display"-like on it?
maybe Oneplus 5t users could know?
Thanks in advance

Actually, an efficient always-on display implementation requires very special display driver hardware, otherwise it will draw too much power. The fact that on OLED "only lit-up pixels draw power" is a huge misunderstanding. When the screen is off, the display driver is in sleep mode. When at least one pixel is lit, the display driver is turned on, and a lot of power is drawn, except with some customized display drivers that support always-on display functionality, like Samsung's or LG's. In these cases, the display driver draws very little power in AOD mode.
So even with an OLED screen a phone manufacturer cannot do an efficient always-on display only based on software. There is a slight chance that OnePlus 6 has some display driver that allows AOD, because the Oppo R15/Pro has this feature - though it is quite inefficient according to one top smartphone site (and as far as I know, they are very similar or even identical in the display department).
So basically, my advice is to not expect miracles in this department, and learn how to use the Light Flow software to control the notification LED, in many cases the LED is better than AOD because you can see it from across the room (and it also draws much less power than even the most efficient AOD implementations).
Thank you very much for your answer

Should i worry about screen burn-in on my Oneplus 7 Pro?

Hello, I've recently purchased a Oneplus 7 Pro and noticed it was using an OLED panel, the problem is that Burn-ins scare me a whole lot, as such, I have been wondering how others have been using their phones. I've tried using Google, but have found nothing truly satisfactory and as such, I have compilled a few questions i had about the display.
- Is screen burn-in still a real issue? and should I avoid using the phone over long periods of time?
- Do "True black" wallpapers help with this issue? what about dark gray? and a bright wallpaper?
- Do both the static navigation bar and status bar have issues? Same with the AOD, does the fingerprint icon cause issues?
- Should I take extra steps to prevent burn-in? (If so, please say which ones, eg. Any practices you have to prevent screen burn-ins)
(On a side note, does anyone approximatly know how long [in general] an OLED panel at medium brightness and daily moderate to heavy use has before it shows signs of burn-in?)
I'm sorry if this has already been addressed, but i have searched through the forums and have found nothing.
Thanks a lot!

I don't even think about it.
I share the same concerns.
The last OLED phone I had was a Galaxy Nexus and I told myself I'd never get an OLED screen again after that nightmare.
Dealing with the OLED issues has been better with improvements in the technology and overall quality control.
Android OS also has some changes that help prevent burn in. For example the navigation bar and status bar change colors based on the app.
With AOD I know Samsung for example slowly moves the elements around so it doesn't burn in. You can enable the Oneplus AOD with root but Always on Display isn't the same as the Ambient Display on stock Oneplus. Ambient display doesn't stay on screen long enough to really cause any burn in.
Best practices are to avoid high brightness, stay at half or less. If you have a game HUD or other static elements on screen for extended periods of time, rotate the phone when in landscape so it is less likely to burn in.
I'm not an expert on this so i'd like to hear others responses too. This is a more expensive flagship phone so I want to use it for games but avoid the burn in.
I've already read some reports of burn-in on Oneplus Chinese board. The culprits seem to be some Tencent games and its video streaming service. All have very high contrast UI elements, and users tend to turn the brightness very high.
This was the case with my plasma TV. Civ4 left some nasty burn-in in the first year but after so many years of heavy PC usage those remain the only true burn-ins on the TV. It depends on the app. Are there some ways to measure contrast of onscreen elements? In addition to phones I need to replace my plasma with OLED in the coming years.
I got burn in on my OnePlus 3 bc I keep it in my car and use it for a music player, there were times I left it on overnight on a static image multiple times, so if u plan keeping ur phone on all the time on a certain image then u don't have anything to worry about.
I used the Galaxy S3, Oneplus 3, Oneplus 5T all with OLEDs. No burn in. Never. Of course if you are and extrem case and you leave the screen static on for a lot of hours on several days there MIGHT be the risk. But with normal to "normal" heavy usage you shouldnt really be concerned.

Better u only turn it on for a few seconds, be carefull after 10 sec it gets critical..
Just don't leave the screen on at max brightness for long periods of time and you'll avoid burn in.
Because the pixels are self-illuminating and will eventually wear out/start dimming in an OLED display over time, this will probably be a concern with any phone that has such a display.
I had burn-in with my OnePlus 3T starting after a little over a year of use. I had my 6T for about 7 months and hadn't noticed any problems with it by that point.
I think the biggest culprit in long-term use is the notifications area of the status bar, unfortunately. The notification icons usually directly contrast with whatever is on the screen at the time, which ends up causing the pixels to wear out at different rates. While the burn-in on my 3T wasn't defined or crisp, there was a noticeable brightness difference where the icons usually display, and it was apparent any time there was a solid color in that area of the screen.
https://www.cnet.com/news/oled-screen-burn-in-what-you-need-to-know/
To fight this, keep up to date with swiping away notifications, and use gesture controls in OOS instead of the navigation bar.
Use Auto brightness and enjoy the phone...
Honestly, I would be concerned. I have noticed screen burn on my 7 Pro already. My specific case is that I use Waze while driving, and on long (> 1 hour) drives I get the UI lightly burned in. After I noticed it, I alternate the phone orientation 180 degrees to minimize its effects. I also have the "Colors" screen saver activate whenever plugged in, which has noticeably reduced & corrected the issue. Just be aware and adjust the phone orientation regularly and you should not see anything burn in.
My Galaxy S4 and 1+ 3T both had burn in, but after several years of use. (Same app was the culprit.) I think the reason it happened on my 7 Pro faster is because of the higher brightness and 90Hz refresh rate. Once I kicked it down to 60Hz it does not happen near as often .

Do you have your screen turned to full brightness when using waze? I keep mine at about 40-50% brightness. I use maps for 2-3 hours a day 4 or 5 days a week and I have had my 7 Pro since launch and I have zero burn in. I have never had burn in going back to my note 3 days either. I/m actually looking at my OP6 right now as well and no burn in there either (bought that on launch day as well). I also activated forced 90hz all apps on my 7Pro as well and nothing yet. I'm guessing it's your screen brightness that is doing it. Nothing else makes any sense.
Tmobile demo both phone in my store have burn in.... But also does the note 9 and a few others.
Those have the same image on the screen 90% of the time and the screens are set to max brightness to show off the display. All AMOLED displays will burn in if you test your phone the same. When I use maps, I turn off auto brightness and just set it bright enough to see the screen which usually is about 40% brightness. I also change my wallpaper like once a week as well
Had burn in on both 6p and s9 and all in status bar and navigation bar. Now I've installed system tuner and switched on full immersive mode. You need to be rooted though. Using battery widget to look at battery life.

Used my OP3 for 3 years straight until I switched to the 7 pro. Never had to think about burn in. Just chill and enjoy the device
When using google maps or waze on long trips, keep the screen off till the next turn. That's what i do. I NEVER keep the screen on long enough with a static image. I don't think there is any tech that will not give a burn in with a static image over long periods of time. I will still pick OLED over LCD any day.

Everyone should just have a spare lcd phone for navigation. I use an iphone 6s for navigation in my card. Tether data from my phone and dont have tk worry about burn in
I use mine for navigation ,i drive a convertible so the screen is always on high brightness.
Never had any issues with my galaxy s8 which i had for over a year and used it the same way. Poor thing had the maps on more than anything else.i broke the display before the any burn ins.
The display should not have any burn ins even after prolonged use.
However you might want to keep it at 90%max brightness.
I make the most of my oneplus 7 pro so if i notice any burn ins i'll just return it to warranty. I don't care ,i use the phone however i want to.
Also the colors are going to be visibly washed out after a few years of use compared to when it was new, that's why i always insure my phones and just get a brand new one before my contract expires.
In order to avoid getting burn-in you have to:
1. Avoid displaying images with static contents for more than one hour at a time. Many people get their keyboard burnt in because they text obsessively.
2. Avoid using a higher brightness than you need.
3. Maybe use the gesture based navigation.
Tipically burn in is a non-issue but displaying static content for more than an hour uninterrupted can get it to appear, depends on the panel, brightness and color being displayed.. Just pause what you're doing every once in a while and you should be fine.
