TWRP not support for Android 10. What to use for backup/restore? - Google Pixel 3 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

I've always made TWRP NANDroid imgs for backup & restore.
Twrp doesn't work with Android10 yet. So what are you all using instead?

Have you tried formatting a USB drive and backing up your data (important files - Pics, SMS, etc.) to a USB drive including an apps list? If you can use Titanium Backup with this ROM you can skip the apps list and restore your apps with Titanium Backup. Then when you finish flashing a ROM you just copy your files back to your phone from the USB with a 'root capable' file explorer.
It will not back up your boot image, system image or Vendor image, but if a reset is required you won't lose all your important data.

Can Titanium Backup restore system settings/configs etc like twrp nandroid?
I want a complete system backup/restore so I won't need to setup/configure device again after a wipe.

@Momotani-Hitoshi
Gonna have to go back to Android 9 until or if they even get TWRP working on 10 for the Pixels. This is probably one of the biggest reasons I'm still on 9.
Titanium is still fairly unreliable as well as I still come into contact with certain apps that refuse to work after restoring them with titanium (Waze is one such app)

I am using Swift Backup and it works flawlessly. It saves things on the cloud (if you want or also locally) and then you can restore on any phone. I actually like it better than Titanium, which I have used since the days of my Note 3.

Came across your post by chance while searching to understand why TWRP failed to restore the images made of LineageOS 17.1 (Android 10) on my Wileyfox. Huge time waste, as is Titanium at present, with this Android version.

I am still using TiBu daily and occasionally sync TiBu to Google drive. Swift Backup looks like a good alternative.
I miss NANDROID backups with TWRP.

OAndBackupX on F-droid is free and seems to function well enough

TRWP is now available for Pixel 3/XL Android 10!

Used it for years, When I updated to a new phone and every version update and Rom change. It can upload your backup to Goggle Drive. I usually copy the storage directory to my PC.
Setup auto backup schedule, your good to go.
I paid for it yrs ago, still reloads with no problems.
It's a powerful app.

If you are using Magisk for root than you can hide root from Banking Apps, like Bank of America.

I have successfully hid my banking apps in Magisk. I get all of my three banks working properly with root.

Hi folks.
I did only backup the parameters as suggested by the app, but what a pitty....
The main file only weight 468 Bytes (attachement)
This method is clearly unrelialable. As it doesn't backup my whole parameters.
TitaniumBackup appears to be my last shot, but I still have to determine what to backup...

You won't be disappointed. I freeze apps with icebox. Swift backs up more than just apps.
Of course, it's individual choice but I rely on OP Switch as my backup solution. I was a big fan for TB during my rooted days. With excellent Oxygen OS and OP Switch, I have no desire to root the phone anymore.
I haven't used Swift Backup app, but it might be worth the try. It's available on play store.

There aren't many apps on Oxygen OS that I consider bloatware. I use most of them. If I don't use a particular app, I simply disable it. If it still bothers me there are many guides online to debloat using adb commands.
I use paid version of AdGuard and have no issues with blocking ads. One license fee covers all 3 phones in my family.

Titanium backup: Apps crash after restore

Migrating to a new phone and discovered an issue with the backups on my old phone. This is tested and happening on both btw.
If I backup and restore a working app it then will force close on opening. Clearing cache and data and still force closes.
I tried uninstalling titanium, deleting titanium folder and reinstalling.
Same issue after a backup and restore of an application.
Running Oneplus 6 and Oneplus 7 pro
Unlocked and unrooted with magisk
Titanium at latest version from market.

App restore with titanium doesn't work for switching to a new phone, only restoring to the same phone and same os. When it does work the apps tend to be super glitchy. I'll drop a link to the xda thread where you can get more info/ help. Good luck.

Agreed. I've only migrated app data to a new phone using TB import/export (.TiBkp) feature. AFAIK, you can only do that one app at a time. So I've only done it with a few apps that I really wanted to save the user data.
More folks on this forum are recommending Swift Backup these days. It seems more reliable for this phone. I've use TB for years, but now I've just started trying out Swift Backup.
It appears TB is not compatible with the newer "split apks" format for newer apps in the appstore.
Basically TB will only backup the "base.apk" for an app when it does a backup. But with split apks, there are other APK files besides base.apk, like one for the app's language (split_config.en.apk) or the cpu type (split_config_arm64_v8a.apk) and the screen resolution (split_config.xxhdpi.apk).
So, since TB does NOT backup these extra apk files, these files will be missing when you do a restore with TB and thus the restored app will crash when you try to run it.
Luckily there is a new open-source backup app that works well with Slit-apks on Android 8+:
GitHub - NeoApplications/Neo-Backup: backup manager for android
backup manager for android. Contribute to NeoApplications/Neo-Backup development by creating an account on GitHub.

And I think it's better then Swift backup because:
1) Swift backup requires your google account login
2) Swift backup throws errors if you block internet access to it for security reasons
3) Swift backup is not open-source, so it could go the way of TB in the future.
4) And OandBackupX is FREE

Those errors seem like there is a problem with xandbackupx not being able to gain root access.
When you first started OABX, it has a bunch of cards where each card requires a different permission on your device - did you go through each card/step and give all those permissions, including root?
Are you using android 8+?

Alternative to Titanium Backup?

Hey everyone,
I've been using Titanium backup for a few weeks now but one thing irks me about it.. even though it successfully backs up my apps and I assume my data - when it comes to restoring the backup, it always re-installs the apps in a broken state.
After restoration is complete, about 1/3rd of my apps have to be re-installed. When I tap on an app, it crashes soon as it opens.
I'm currently trying out Migrate - but TWRP throws an error 7 when attempting to restore the backed up ZIP that Migrate created.
Swift I read is awesome, unfortunately it's a google focused app, and this device is degoogled for privacy and security reasons.
Any free options to replace Titanium Backup?

As far as i know, latest release of TB dates back to 2019, even before Covid widespread.
Maybe the author is not interested in developing TB anymore for some reason.

Swift is the best. Latest version only.
I had the same problem when I switched form my S9+ running Android 9 to my new S20 Ultra running Android.
Almost all apps crashed after restore.
I got the tip to try "Swift Backup" and I must say it works perfectly. You can choose to backup your apps and data locally or on google drive or something similar. If you backup your apps in the cloud you can easily access those backups from another phone and restore them
The only problem with Swift Backup is that backed up data is encrypted and you can't decrypt it on your own.

How To Guide Backup properly with root

I'm pretty decent with root ROMs etc, but I've always been **** at backing up properly. Any recommendations on apps (old or new) and instructions on how to backup and restore my phone so I don't have to relogin to apps, or reset up apps that don't keep my settings within apps that don't keep them even if they have a log in.
Any help would be appreciated. And no, google backup won't work. Doesn't do what I want

Question Root without phone resetting? Or backup app+it's data via adb or similar?

So I'm changing phones, but there's one app which I would have to backup including it's data. If I'd be rooted I could use Titanium Backup, unfortunately I'm not rooted.
Is there a way to root without wiping the phone or is there another way to backup the apps data (and restore) via adb or something else?

For that I'd need a way to remove everything from the backup besides WhatsApp though. As that does a backup and restore of everything, all apps, all file system etc IIRC
Trying adb backup now, there seems to be a java tool that allows you to open the backup file on pc

Unfortunately WhatsApp wasn't included in the full backup for some reason
I just tried an app on play store called Swift Backup and it worked!
I made a backup of just whatsapp then deleted it and it restored it without signing in

I'm living in the UK for a few more months, but still use my German number on WhatsApp. The number has since been retired so I can't get SMS/calls on that one anymore, so I'm unable to sign in.
I wish I would've rooted the phone....

So I'm changing phones, but there's one app which I would have to backup including it's data. If I'd be rooted I could use Titanium Backup, unfortunately I'm not rooted.
Is there a way to root without wiping the phone or is there another way to backup the apps data (and restore) via adb or something else?

Is that the Samsung moving phones thingy? Does that move apps including it's data so you don't have to set them up again?
I usually avoid the moving data from phone to phone during setup, because I take setting up a new phone as an opportunity to clean up data/apps. So I only reinstall those I actually need
EDIT: Just tried it, sadly not:

Backup with ur whatsapp. Its too easy. Anyway, in case u cant do it, think u have to reset only single app (whatsapp - like ur screenshot), so u cant?

As mentioned in here, using the backup inside WhatsApp still needs you to sign in again on the new phone which isn't my goal. I want to backup ALL of WhatsApp including the sign in, so I can just move it to the new phone without logging in.

Then u have 2 options:
1 - Root your phone.
2 - Ask dev of Whatsapp to do something for u (for all too.lol). But i think it'll never come true. Its too risky for any apps.

Yeah thanks, I know it's possible with root which I don't have and doing it wipes the phone which makes my whole reason for this pointless.
This whole post was just asking if there's any way to do it without root. If you can't help don't reply?
