Refresh Rate and Resolution QS tiles? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Up until today I was using GravityBox to change my refresh rate and resolution via quick settings tiles. After updating magisk it seems that EdXposed has been broken for right now, and right down there with it is GravityBox, literally the only Xposed Module I used .
Are there any apps that give you quick settings tiles for Resolution and Refresh Rate, and as a bonus are there any that put the clock in the center?
If it helps for the last bit I do have magisk installed I just haven't been able to find anything matching my hopes.
Thank you
-John

Have you tried TaiChi exposed? I've encountered stability issues with Edxpose on every device I've used it with while TaiChi has never giving me an issue. I didn't even know GB had a toggle for Hz so thanks for that tad bit. I use Auto90 to choose which apps to run in 60Hz and 90Hz and it's working extremely well.

Flickering when choosing an app from the recent apps 9.0.2

Hi, so i'm on 9.0.2, the animations are set to 0.5, is anyone having a kind of flickering when choosing an app from the recent apps??
How to produce it:
-Open an app
-Go home
-Open the recent apps
-Choose the same app again
I notice there is a flickering, check it to see if you have the same
Regards
Nope... Its smooth
I have the same issue. This is because you changed the animation duration in developer options (mine is set to 0.5). Disabling developer options fix the issue but you have slower animations.

Exactly, the OB6 has much smoother animations than the Stable even with animation durations is set to 0.5
I agree. I flashed full 9.0.2 and did a factory reset but the experience is not good. Oreo is still way better on any aspect. I don't see the battery optimization and the adaptive brightness is really bad even after 5 days. Most likely I will go back to Oreo and upgrade to pie when it will be ready.
I'm also experiencing glitchy weirdness when I try to type in certain apps on this latest Rom.

[REQUEST] Black List for Force 90 HZ

Hello guys,
As you know we are able to force 90hz for all apps. Not always it's a good idea because of :
- battery reason
- Google maps issues
- games which are not "high end" to avoid high battery usage (games like poker and so on does not need 90hz)
I wanted to ask some developers if they can create an application which can be configured themselve (black list for all apps which should not run in 90hz for example)
Thanks so.much (this would.be a reason to root if it requires root).
Put it on auto and let it manage itself or install gravitybox and you can change refresh rate from the quick-settings tile.

Well, you need to swipe down your quick settings and click the refresh rate tile. So, it's not automated but at least it makes things easier.

No but JOnePlus Tool lets you just turn it on and off with a single button on the fly. Just open the app and it's on the main screen there.

I also use the forced 90hz all apps and the battery drain from this is seriously overblown. People scream about what they know nothing about. People need to educate themselves before making claims. They just say it kills battery without even trying it. I did nothing different, changed nothing and used my phone the same way I normally do and it made a difference of an increase of .7% battery drain with the screen on compared to 90hz on auto. It went from 6.3% drain pet hour to 7.0% per hour of screen on time. And since I've gotten days with 6.1% with it on forced 90hz all apps. So the difference isn't of and significance. Just try it and if you don't like it, switch it back. You'll find it makes no real difference when using it.
So there really should not be a need to blacklist 90hz all apps for just certain apps imo
Im sure someone could setup a tasker profile for this reason.

I did in 2 posts above that was linked, also its in the guides section.
I wish we could have possibility to decide to run some apps in 90hz and another in 60 hz.
For instance I wish KODI could run in 60hz.

If you need some help setting it up let me know. This will let u choose which apps use 60Hz and others will force 90Hz
Any possibility without buying tasker?
I switch to maps, display switched to 60, I turned off maps and display still remains 60. Didn't switch to 90.
Thats the way that should work? I need to manually switch to 90?

Not sure what your setup is exactly but if you're running the forced 90hz for all apps it is a bug that it shows as 60hz in the OOS setting under display. So if the tasker profile you are using switches from 90hz all apps and back to 60hz then your display setting will basically always show 60hz.
You can use this to test what your refresh rate is currently, either 60 or 90hz

So you want somebody to develop an app for your needs but won't pay for it?
I just found an app called Auto90. You can select which app you want to be auto/60 or 90hz. It's wonderful!

OnePlus 7 - OxygenOS 11 stable - Issues

Hello,
Recently i upgraded my OnePlus 7 to OxygenOS 11 via OTA, and here is a list of a few annoying bugs(features?) that you'll need to know before upgrading:
(Note: I performed hard reset after upgrading, so any bugs here will be persistent and not because of some fixable issues, unless you are rooted/want to use adb maybe?)
(Also, this is the stock OOS 11, not rooted, and no modifications)
1) I'm not sure if it's just me, but the device heats up much faster. Though the temperatures here are high, I tried to maintain as close to a lab condition as possible, maintaining 30C ambient temp. Evaluation was done with a session of Call of Duty Mobile, and Youtube 4K video loopback test. Avg temps are: CODM : OOS 10: 41C, OOS 11: 45C, Youtube: OOS 10: 37C, OOS 11: 38C
2) Performance hit in games and frame drops (CODM, outside the ambient temperature maintained conditions), could be due to overheating? (As i mentioned, ambient temps are a bit high here). Also SystemUI lags sometimes. Adding to that, trying to bring up notification panel while playing a demanding game (like codm), the SystemUI (notification panel) opening animation is really choppy. (Is there some graphic driver issue?)
3) Brightness slider very slow to respond (seriously? Have to wait for 3 sec for the brightness to come up/go down on manually moving the slider)
4) Again, this one could be only me, but the audio seems to be a bit low after the update. All the ringtones and default notification sounds, with the same volume levels feels lower than how it was on OOS 10.
5) Battery drain - Device heat up and performance issues, translate to higher battery drain
6) This may not be a bug, but it's a change that i don't quite like (at least provide options?) : Double tap to wake doesn't give a vibration feedback like how it used to.
7) Everything, including UI and default font size is bigger than what I'm comfortable with (no, changing the font/display size doesn't give the expected results). But there's a workaround: Changing the display dpi from developer options from 384 to 420.
8) I had several app crashes (Instagram, Photos) even after disabling Android System Webview as suggested by some. But this issue seems to have been fixed magically for now.
9) This is a change, but to actually poweroff/reboot, you will need to reach your finger to the top of the screen with the new UI.
10) DC dimming has been removed
11) Weird QC issue-Someone thought any greyed out field in settings is because it's not supported by phone or HEADSET... Even in Private DNS settings.(See screenshot)
12) Natural colour calibration has a weird yellow tint (sRGB profile works fine tho)
13) Lots of missed/delayed notifications. Many times, notifications from apps like Instagram, Telegram doesn't arrive on time, with delays from 2 minutes to never arriving at all. Whatsapp seems to work most of the time. Sometimes, notifications don't make sound (weird), but only flash on the screen (Yes, I've verified all my notification settings, and I've set everything to make sound)
14) Now this might be a personal preference, but I don't quite like the way OxygenOS is trying to mimic OneUI (Huge heading and small contents beneath? Not my taste.) This style is followed in the phone, messaging, contacts, calculator, etcc
15) Quickly switching between recent apps, there's a split second of a black screen that appear before the app UI is displayed (not complaining, but this was not present in oos10, it seamlessly moved from the preview of the app on the recent apps screen to the actual app ui without any flickering, and no, this is not because of dc dimming being off or anything)
16) Google Play Music is still not removed (seriously, why still have it if it can't be used?)
17) FileDash - No longer has the DNS resolver for one.plus address. You will now have to manually type in the address displayed by filedash in your browser. Also, it still uses 2.4GHz and not 5GHz.
Edits: Added more bugs/missing features
Hem981,
I can confirm #7 is an issue on mine as well.
The power menu is an android 11 change not an OOS change.
I upgraded from OOS 10 to OOS 11 no wipe and don't seem to experience the other issues that you are having, except the obvious changes they made to the firmware. Have you tried clearing the dalvik-cache and rebooting? Mine was super buggy before doing this, but then again I just upgraded without wiping.
One issue I've personally noticed is the cell radios were a lot better on OOS 10, and I'm assuming that is the cause of the battery life to be worse.
Another that could be due to doing some debloating is when I take a screenshot and the little preview pops up in the bottom right corner if i click on it the UI will freeze after clicking back. The Nav buttons still work, like you can click on recents and the recent menu appears, back and home work but the screen is frozen otherwise until I force a reboot.
Yeah, I've tried factory reset and then wiping dalvik-cache... The performance was better before i performed the factory reset, i think. Anyway, there are quite a few games/apps where the performance impact is easily visible. Also, the power button thing is an Android change, but i really hoped OnePlus to have done something to make it more easily accessible (OOS is not pure Android). I couldn't find the issue with the cell radio you mentioned (as I've tried in areas in which i already had poor reception, and the performance was what was expected). Anyway, I really hope some of these (at least the performance, battery drain and the brightness slider issue) will be fixed soon over updates.
(For me, the SOT has gone down from 9.5 hours to 7 hours under similar use cases)
Yeah SOT has definitely taken a hit on mine as well, standby time seems the same. I also have noticed that the screen brightness needs to be set higher for the same brightness as OOS 10. The cell radio sometimes seem normal, but most of the time they are about 5-10 dBm higher at my house. I'll probably give a clean flash a try this weekend to see if it clears up.
One more issue found:
Weird red tint on screen auto dimming
The whole display has a weird red tint just before the device is about to lock/turn off screen after the timeout, when the display dims. It is easily noticeable if you have a white screen displayed. It only happens if you have set the brightness slider to anything other than the bare minimum (even a single step above the minimum brightness is able to replicate this issue)
I found something interesting: issue #3, the brightness slider being slow to respond to changes, seems to be fixed by disabling all animations from developer options. Should the window animator duration scale have any effect on the responsiveness/quickness of display brightness adjustment? I think that's stupid.
Also, I am starting to thing we need something like 0.1x duration scale for the animations (all animations on Android, or at least OOS), because honestly, with each new implementation, the animations are being too slow that it degrades the whole experience. 0.5x feels a bit better, but i really think something like 0.4x would match the animation speed of android 10.
You forgot to mention the vibration motor effect which has deteriorated since the update. The device now feels like any other cheap device.
It's kinda weird in my situation, just upgrading from 10.3.8 using an old version of xXx NoLimits to 11.0.0. The phone was super buggy when I first installed, but after rooting, wiping the delvik cache, debloating, removing the xXx module, and time to settle in the only issues I have are the screenshot popup, and the lower cell signal which I'm sure is causing a hit on battery life.
I was going to reinstall this past weekend, but for the time and inconvenience it's not worth the time compared to the minor issues I have.
Edit: Even the screen resolution seems normal now.
Again, don't know if this is an issue for anyone else (and i don't think OnePlus is going to change this): While everything else became bigger on the phone, the buttons/number keypad for typing in the screen lock pin became too small.

Hi! Oneplus 7 ownere here.
Try to answer all the points:
1) i don't notice any difference between OOS10 and OOS10 on the heat of the phone
2) I don't know for the gaming performance but i don't play any games...overall, the performance are good, no system lags or freeze BUT I have the same issues with the notification...when i tap a notification, I often have delay, maybe it's just the animation but I remember the same issue on a Oneplus 8t that i tried for 20 days in last November
3) same issue here, very annoying
4) not just you, have same issue
5) battery drain is the same in my case, in standby maybe is less than before
6) me too, but maybe they change this as they planned?
7) yes, same thing. i changed the DPI from developer options too
8) no crashes here
9) this is an Android 11 change from Google, maybe they don't want your device to power off ahahah
10) never had this problem luckily
11) don't know, never tried this
12) i noticed this after reading this point, true on my device too
13) i faced the same issue on the notification sound, the other things works fine
14) me too, if i wanted One UI, i would have bought a Samsung...
15) sometimes happens to me, maybe it's bad ram management?
16) this is ridicolous, why they doesn't remove this app??
17) never tried
I also have an issue on the vibration. Now it's HORRIBLE, i have disabled because it's unusable
So, this is my question: change phone or rollback on android 10?
There's one more addition to the list: Always on display sometimes seems to override the notification lockscreen privacy settings. I have some notifications put as "view private content only when unlocked", but the notification contents are visible just when it arrives on the always on display (though it's content is hidden in the actual lockscreen)
I've reported almost all of these bugs, and hopefully we will see new updates fixing most of these.
Can someone on OOS 10 on OnePlus 7 confirm if the "style preferences" settings in sound settings is greyed out while the output is phone speakers (or no other sound output devices connected)?
New hotfix patch OTA rolling out now...
Here is what's fixed and what's not:
1,2 : Yet to test
3: Not fixed
4:Fixed
5: Yet to test
6: No changes
7: No changes(or not easily noticeable maybe?)
8: Not encountered any "ghost" app crashes yet
9: No change
10: DC Dimming is not back, so no change
11: Not fixed Is it that hard to remove 'headset' text from the UI?
12: Don't know if it's because my eyes adjusted to it, but it seems a bit better now
13: Not yet tested
14: What can I say?
15: Fixed
16: The ghost of Google Play Music still remains
17: Not fixed
Edits: Nothing much is fixed
Performance: Marginal improvements
SoT/Battery: Even worse. Getting almost half the SoT I got on OOS 10 under similar use case and network/tenperature conditions
Ghost app crashes reduced a lot (that might be the only fix) , but is not completely gone (saw that 1 or 2 times)
Haptics is still as bad as before
I'm just worried about this weired bug which has rendered my parallel whatsapp very difficult to use to share media. Any fix for this is highly appreciated - https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/whatsapp-media-problem.1411292/
Thanks and regards
OOS11 - Stable
I have no problems on my device until now (for games I dont know why I do not play)
I noticed, because I have tried both roms(beta4 & stable).Open Beta4 has better "battery management" than stable! Αs strange as it may seem but is a real for me..
Well yes .Battery drain higher than openbeta4
wifi works fine to 5ghz band & generally my device works quite well so far. Patience is needed and all problems will be fixed...
https://postimg.cc/gallery/YtQpVDm
After the recent OS 11 update ,the media in my device ( photos and videos) not being shown properly in Whatsapp. Some of the videos and pictures which I've already deleted in the gallery are appearing again only in whatsapp in unsupported file format.
I'll be glad if someone confirms that it's a bug in OOS 11.0.2 and that my phone is not the only one which is affected.
I'm using WhatsApp and Parallel Whatsapp. Also have setup a Work/Office profile on my phone.
Does anyone have any solution to this issue?
Thanks and regards!
For me, wifi no longer works. Whenever I try to enable it, it just immediately turns off. It also no longer recognizes my SIM card.

Update 11.0.1.1
I feel like this is a big joke.
Even more battery drain (yes, i did a factory reset).
Brightness slider issue still not fixed.
Performance still degraded (but i think there is a little bit of improvement)
Not sure about Wifi issues as i never had them.
Weird red tint on screen dimming
Still many ugly and inconsistent ui elements
Color profile is back to being broken (the yellow tint returned)
Update: I've started having the wifi disconnection issues, after 11.0.1.1 update. This is way too annoying.

Question Rotation lag

Hi,
anyone noticing lag in the rotation animation? Most of the time the first time is pretty smooth. When changing rotation a few times thereafter the animations look more like 60 fps (although 120 is activated). Tried it in different apps. Always the same and really annoying and ugly.
Can anybody confirm this?
This issue goes way back. Even my 10+ does it.
Might have to do with the sensor refresh rate and/or degree of tilt/time at tilt/yaw.
If it takes more then a second there's definitely a fault issue.
Mmh. Actually I didn't recognize this when using my S20 with 120hz. At least not that much. So there's nothing that can improve the experience? I even thought the phone didn't have this behavior from the start which led to the question if I have something fishy installed. But there's nothing out of the ordinary. It's the same when using stock launcher or Ruthless launcher.
Be interested if there was a way to make it more responsive. This aspect of the device's behavior is slow by comparison to it's otherwise snappy performance. It is irritating... I hate waiting.
It's about .5-1 second on the N10+ in Brave browser and elsewhere.
I'm going to go through accessibility settings again. It's likely a user hidden setting though.
Have y'all dug into Developer Options & set the animation speeds to 0.5 (or 0)?
It might help some, if you haven't already done so. However, I've experienced it as well on occasion, getting "stuck", if you will.

For me the problem is that it looks sluggish as if the phone struggles to display the 120 Hz. Setting the transition scale to 0.5 or 0 doesn't do it for me. Makes it even more unsatisfying.

It has nothing to do with your refresh rate or does it? It so there may be some hope.
Like I said though both my N10+'s behave this way, it's normal... and irritating.

Honestly it looks like the phone is struggling to keep it on 120hz when rotating. When I choose 60hz and rotate the phone it looks the same way constantly. That's why I'm thinking it has something to do with the frame rate. So in my case it's not about a delay for the animation it's about the smoothness.

What I'm talking about is how long it takes to flip the screen to landscape once the phone's flipped. Close to 1 second.
I always disable all animations as it wastes resources plus I like the snap.
Lol, if it needs animations, it's too slow.

Sounds like something might be bogging it down.
I have the obligatory delay when rotating (because you have a ton of redraws happening on top of the actual animation itself, not some accessibility setting), but it is minimal. That aside, the rotation is smooth with animation set to 0.5 and adaptive motion smoothness.
The difference between your previous S20, my previous Note 20, and the Z Flip 3 is the lost RAM. This is an 8GB device, compared to 12GB or 16GB from last year. After some time getting used to being able to launch a bunch of stuff, it is easy to forget that this one can't run quite as much at once.
The only sure way to stop that completely without having to keep tabs on how much is running would be Developer options -> Don't keep activities or setting Background process limit, both of which come with some downsides.
If it is happening with a single app running after multiple turns, that could indicate an issue with the GPU. It could be as simple as poor cache handling that will be resolved with an update or a clean start. It could also be a hardware issue.

This sounds like a reasonable explanation to me. The S20 with 12 GB indeed hadn't any of those issues, at least not to that extent. In addition I don't have that issue permanently. It only occurs from time to time. Haven't got an update since release. Hopefully it gets an improvement in the near future as it is disturbing. Nevertheless it is a joke that something like that happens even with 8 GB of RAM.

Do you use split screen apps? The only time i've really come across the issue was trying to run both a game and the browser with a couple other apps still in the background.
I think an update will definitely help, though. It seems like the 8GB on this is a larger step down than it should be right now and it is supposed to be a much better GPU.

No, I don't really use split screen apps. Hopefully an update will help. The device definitely has some obvious tradeoffs but in general it feels fresh and I really like it.
Just an update from my side: Indeed my inner feeling wasn't wrong. I just encountered the sluggish rotation again. Thereafter I went to developer settings and enabled show refresh rate. I went back and tried rotation again. The first time all is fine and it shows 120, but the times thereafter it jumped to 60 Hz when rotating. And if course my eyes will notice this behavior as they are used to 120. Hopefully this will get fixed. This has to be software related.
So this behavior is due to the adaptive refresh rate. It's there a way to force 120 all the time?

Pretty sure that would be able to handle it for you.

I tried this app and I am not fully satisfied with the outcome. Of course forcing 120hz will train the small battery even more and I don't want to be dependant on a 3rd party solution. Just to confirm the behavior is not only on my end, can you please test the following on your device?
1. Go to developer options and enable show refresh rate
2. Go in following apps: e.g. Whatsapp, Facebook, Google Play, Samsung Internet, Amazon Shopping (cause I don't face this issue on all apps)
3. In each app wait a few seconds four the refresh rate to go down to 60 and then rotate the screen (In my case the refresh rate stays at 60 when rotating in the mentioned apps and this looks horrible when the rest is running on 120hz)
If you could borrow a few minutes of your time to check that would be awesome and is very appreciated Thanks in advance!
Update: Just to be sure I did a factory reset. Still no improvement...
Further investigation gave me more information. There is something weird going on. When display brightness is low (around 10-15%) there is no issue for the phone keeping 120 while rotating. When I go up in brightness the 60hz rotation is back again. This is horrible. I've had a look on the new iPhone 13 pro and Apple doesn't have these issues with their adaptive screen. As I had the S20 before and skipped the s21 with the adaptive one this Flip is my first Samsung device with an adaptive screen. The experience is horrible. I just want a compact android device without such a compromise. This is ridiculous.

Android 12 - refresh rate is broken, 90hz all the time

I just noticed that my Pixel 4 XL (currently has the newest Android 12/November patch) does not cycle between 60 and 90 hz anymore. I just noticed an unexpectated and new drain on the battery and finally found the culprit.
Yes, I checked developer options, the phone is NOT forcing 90hz. I checked with developer options (show refresh rate) and the phone is constantly, meaning 100% using 90hz, it never changes to 60. No matter what I do - Youtube, phone, scrolling, doing nothing, idling, homescreen, newspaper app, Audible - it matters not. It is constantly forcing 90hz WITHOUT having ever clicked the 90hz force toggle. This is putting a drain on the battery that is just unacceptable.
Can you guys confirm this?
Try clearing the system cache.
A factory reset maybe be needed after a major OTA firmware upgrade but there's no guarantee it will resolve it.
Updates tend to break things...

The phone was - actually - already factor reset. After doing the Android 12 update, I factory reset it and gave it to a family member, that one set it up new. So it's not a "remnant" of Android 11.

I would re-flash with the latest full image, leaving the script intact (allowing the data partition to be wiped). This may be inconvenient but it's the only way you will know if there is a hardware issue with the phone. I'd also like to know what led you to the refresh rate. In other words, what made you look there. The stock battery monitor is not very good and even looking at system apps (screen, ambient display) you only get time and a percentage of the battery.
is the same on 12 and 11, i just installed 11 and is always 90hz
yes i can confirm, i had the same issue and i just boght my pixel 4 xl 10 days ago. updated to android 13 beta now and it still has the same problem. really weird but i think that google just decided that its best for google pixel 4 owners to have 90hz all the time now cause u know its "more common" now
Google changed how Smooth display works during the cycle of the phone. IIRC it was the same on A11 too. Basically the only time it goes 60hz is during battery saving mode & in some specific apps that prohibit it. It also disables it when HBM is on.
That doesn't make a lot of sense, you can save much more energy by just raising to 90hz for touch and animations and otherwise reduce to 60hz independently of the battery state.
I had the pixel 7 Pro for a while and can confirm that it works there as expected (60 for static content & no touch events, otherwise raises up to 120hz), just not for the pixel 4 XL.
This does seem like a bug to me and explains why battery life (SOT) got so much worse. I wonder if it's an intended degradation to get people to upgrade..
Fix it with adb, set minimal refresh rate
adb shell settings put system min_refresh_rate 1.0
adb shell settings put system peak_refresh_rate 90.0
Tested that, does not work either unfortunately. Display stays on 90Hz all the time

Confirm you have extra dim disabled, and brightness 60%
Confirmed, does not make a difference
Out of nowhere it started working. The only thing I changed in between is brightness and extra dim, ending up with the same setting as before (full brightness, extra dim disabled). Didn't work straight away, but after leaving the phone for 5 minutes and picking it up again, I immediately noticed (display refresh rate setting was still enabled)
Thank you for your help, Hamid!

No problem, glad i helped!
Feel free to visit my optimization threads, it might help improve your battery life and performance.
One last remark: It didn't really work well at first, at least not as consistently as on the pixel 7 that I've tried. After some trial and error, playing around with various settings, the culprit seems to have the "increase touchscreen sensitivity" setting that I had enabled. Since turning it off, the switching between 60 and 90Hz is much better. Brightness and extra dim don't seem to play a role.
Battery life also seems to have improved a lot (now at ~50% at the end of the day compared to <20% before)
