What phones are on your outlook? - Google Pixel 3 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello all, ,
Getting pretty tired of the 3xl but as i look around i'm not seeing anything really worth it?
Is there something y'all have your eye out for , that still gives us the ability to unlock bootloader flash etc. ?

Perhaps the S11+ Exynos version which will allegedly have an amazing camera and unlockable bootloader.

Having owned exynos samsung devices in the US on t-mo , i can honestly tell you i will never ever eff with samsung again.
The CSC crap alone should be enough to dissuade you.

Until OEMs give the option to run stock Android with updates on the day of release, I'm stuck with Google devices. I don't really care for the pixel hardware or the design to be honest. I just want stock rooted and be able to take OTAs.

Isn't Oneplus the logical choice? My understanding is that the hardware is better than the Pixels and it supports unlocking and flashing.
My Pixel 3 XL is very disappointing as well. It drains battery like crazy. My 3 yr old Pixel 2 XL has almost 40% more battery in identical conditions. And then also P3XL has bluetooth connection issues and reloading of apps in background.
Very bored and discouraged with the phone and can't do much since I spend close to $900 on it.
Thinking of Oneplus as the next device and getting away from Pixels. Do you have any other advice?

I have a pixel 2 that i have as a backup, but of course OP is the logical choice, problem is, i'd much rather spend my money on a 7t pro than a 7t :\

Yes. I agree. But the 7tPro is not available in the US. Also do you know whether OnePlus update Android regularly? One good thing about Pixels is the monthly security patch, and I don't know if OP phones get that.
How is your battery life on the P3XL? Mine is completely garbage. To the point, I have to carry 2 phones around always (Pixel 2 as the backup). IF I'm out, the battery on P3XL drains in real time. I barely even get half a day of light usage.
I've tried EVERY trick in the book: Multiple factory resets, debugging apps, rooting, custom kernels. NOTHING has helped. A P2XL in identical conditions - doesn't drain any battery at all. As I type this, since morning my P3XL has gone down to 51% in 3 hours where as P2XL is still at 83%. Both phones have the same exact apps and same version of Android.

I jus order me a One Plus 7 Pro it was 50 cheaper than the 7t but a way better looking screen then 8 pro gonna have a camera hole on screen but identical to 8 pro. One plus jus releaseed Android 10 beta in oct or Nov so their right behind Google but for half the price 577 with a case screen protector preinstalled 8gb ram 256 storage 90hz fresh rate like the pixel 4 4000mah battery 30 min charge time. Sounds way better to me. Also you should try
Despair Kernel it helped my P3XL in battery life. Also if you root theres magisk module GMS dose will help with the standby drain with Kernel and that module makes it gold .

Thanks. Appreciate the review.
Once you have the Oneplus 7 Pro, I would be very interested to know the comparison with Pixel 3 XL specifically on the screen, sound, performance, battery life etc. I do NOT care about the Camera.

Honor 8 on Nougat battery life without rooting, custom roms and tweaks?

I've asked this question before but I'm having a hard time choosing between Honor 8, Honor 9 and iphone SE (yeah I know ) so please help me out. Many reports of bad battery life on Nougat so I'm worried before making the jump.
How is your battery life with latest update on Nougat? I mean without rooting, greenify or other tweaks. How's standby time with wifi on and background data always on?
Thanks a lot!
I would not go for the iPhone. The iPhone has an awful display and is not too fast. The Honors are both pretty good. Honor 9 is better than Honor 8, but Honor 8 is still pretty amazing. I haven't had any battery issues myself, so idk what is all this fuss about.
OnePlus 5T. Everything is better, except SD card support and IR.

Honor phones are realy good, I have before both Honor 8 and 9. Im selling both and buy P10 plus. Because, I want better camera. Honor 8 is amazing device and receive Oreo but we ned wait. Honor 9 have already Oreo. Camera quality is same H8 and H9. H9 have just 20Mpx (I dont see any different betwen H8 and H9 quality. I was realy sad for this. In 5. december will launch new Honor phone I think will be Honor 9 pro.
So Honor 8 (except procesor) is same like 9 but maybe cheaper. I suggest u buy Honor 8 or Honor 8 pro or wait for Honor 9 pro. I dont recommend to buy Honor 9, from my experience I cant
edit: battery life on Nougat is depend which model u want buy EU and US model have good battery

See I am honor 8 owner, using it since past 5 months,it's awesome.1st it looks stunning it's an eye catcher fully glass made, especially the blue one.Its prone to break so buy a cover.2ndly about perfomance it has never lagged for me,am a power user.3rd camera its the best camera out there, competition for iphone 8.and about the battery backup it lasts 12 hours for me on single charge always connected to WiFi and power using.and what you can do with this I bet you can't do with iphone.iphone is just a name and this is future

Sorry but 12 hours is still too low, unless you are eating up the battery playing games and using GPS all the time. Powerful processors should also be power-efficient. I don't think the processor in Honor 8 is inefficient because by all accounts battery life was fine on Marshmallow, so either Huawei messed something up in Nougat or the quality of the batteries in some units is so bad that they degrade a lot within the one-year mark, which coincides with the time of the Nougat update. Looks are irrelevant to a discussion of battery life.

Well maybe not that bad then, if you are a heavy user. Anyway if you are happy with your device congratulations. Oh and Samsung is crap. HTC sadly is rapidly spiralling down to nonexistence.

note8 to op6?

want to change my note 8 with op6 but I'm scared because people on xda is telling it has a huge overnight battery drain.. it's almost like 10-15% ..
look my Samsung galaxy note 8 is full of bloat and I want to taste a stock alike phone...but i lose only 2-3% overnight with this bloated phone...but op6 is almost stock..then what's causing this drain? i saw Reddit and op forum almost every one is facing this problem..i used 5t and it had same issue like this... that's whyvi returned.. please suggest me...
hope i didn't show any attitude or disrespect anybody... ?
I have come from Note 8 to OP6 two days back. Battery is way way better than note 8. I have been on Note 8 since 7-8months and battery is very awful.
I'm on note 8 too, and the oneplus 6. Been doing some testings, OP 6 is far better in battery and optimize .
And in a few weeks our so, there will be down-clockable and up clockable kernels out there to improve voltage usage and much more.
Oneplus 6, is far better when it comes down to battery.
I have a note 8 and a 5t. I rarely used the note 8 over the 5t because of the battery and lag. The OnePlus 6 has been performing the same as the 5t to me so far. The other day I was able to get almost 10 hours without charging at 60% battery left on the OnePlus 6. So my note 8 will continue to be unused.
When I sleep, I just turn WiFi and Mobile data off...
And the drain is hardly 1-2%, if that.

No, and depends what you want. Op6 feels like a $2-300 phone. Speaker, camera etc are honor 7x territory. Updates can help but hardware is hardware.
Updates and oem support OnePlus wins vs any Samsung.
I'm getting close to 6hrs of sot valid note with 4-5hrs sot. I personally could give 2 craps, as I have access to chargers and such. Both gets me through the workday. This is op6 without tweaks vs note 8 with qhd resolution and everything left on. Trade off is minimal. Everybody has fast charging.
I miss my note 8. Op6 is smooth. It will be a slight downgrade overall besides speed and battery life. It's a 1080p panel with stock Android.

I've used all OnePlus devices including OnePlus one..that was one of my most favourite devices
OnePlus 6 - Speed, Battery, Quick updates, Stupid fast charging, Stock android
Note 8 - HD Screen, amazing camera, waterproofing, wireless charging, feature overload
I've love watching videos and media on the OnePlus 6. The battery just freaking last. I've gotten 7-8 hours SOT between Youtube, Youtube TV, Netflix, Prime Video and other general use(my table is getting cold as I haven't touched it since the phone arrived). It took a few charges to get the max out of the battery but Dang I have NEVER had a phone like this(at first it wasn't as impressive but it did change). I am coming from the S8 btw. Which wouldn't last half the time as this phone with SOT. And it is a beastttttt. Nothing slows it down.

That is not accurate. They did not pay for the certification so all we can assume is it will survive splashes. In fact another YouTube put it in his pool where IP67 would survive and it filled up with water and bricked his phone. Watch it here

Battery Drain

First of all. I truly hate the battery drain threads, as I never had issues with it before.
I've had all pixels xl, and most of the nexus phones.
With the pixel line, I had never been so happy with battery, specially pixel 2 xl. Battery would last 1.5 to 2 days for me (I am very conservative in usage)
However, with the 3 xl, at the end of the day yesterday, I had 39%> This was a day I did not use the phone except for 10 sms, quick stock checks, 2 emails, no phone calls, 15 minutes of music with bt headphones in the metro.
Last night, I put it in safe mode, charged it. TODAY, I took away from the charger at 6am, checked emails, back in the pocket. At 8 am, I had 90%.
Removed from safe mode at 8 am. Checked some messages, spoke for 10 minutes over the phone, checked emails and stocks. It is now 9:20am and my battery is at 80%
Not good. I am really disappointed.
Could I have a defective unit? Am I spoiled with my excellent pixel 2 xl? I did see one youtuber complaining about his battery.
I am afraid mine is defective. If not, I want to go back to the pixel 2 xl.
If you have yours, and had a pixel 2 xl, please let me know how you feel about it please!
Thanks
UPDATE 12/17/18: Nothing really changed much. Pixel 3 XL is horrible with the battery when compared to Pixel 2 XL. What a disappointment in this phone, all over the place. Battery, Buggy, Notch, Audio Recording, Video Recording, Face Unlock, Gestures, etc. What a waste of hard earned money. Of all Pixels and Nexus, this is together with the Nexus 6, the most I have been disappointed.
I truly love these phones, what they represent and all, but after years with the 'google phones', it might be time to try something else.... seriously.... with this phone, the fact that I still did not receive a $50 credit from google, and all these $300 discounts, with free pixel wireless charger and pixel earphones, after 2 months from launch, it makes me extremely disappointed of being an early adopter. Next year I am definitely waiting until January, after reading all reviews and trying it out first before I buy, or just getting a different brand phone.
I am very disappointed this time around.
Hmm I haven't noticed that yet on mine. So far the standby drain has been pretty solid. I haven't had a lot of time to test it obviously, but so far it isn't standing out as an issue for me yet.

Hopefully I will have more responses like yours. If I do I will just exchange the phone with a new one. My unit is really draining fast. From my original post to now, with standby and NO USE of the phone, I am down 2% to 78% (I am using a desktop with the forum).
Thank you.

Before you exchange it, you might try conditioning the battery. Use it until it dies, fully charge it, use it again until it dies, and then one more cycle. If you .are still observing issues after that, then definitely return it.
I only suggest this as conditioning the battery is likely easier than an RMA.

Thanks. I did recycle the battery, did the factory reset, etc, still having issues. Google is shipping me a new phone Hopefully that will help.
I did see some videos on youtube of people complaining about the battery life, also notice an article that shows that Pixel 2 XL lasts about 1:20 hours more than the 3 XL. Pretty disappointing...
https://www.phonearena.com/news/Google-Pixel-3-vs-Pixel-3-XL-battery-life_id110162
But still, mine is performing way worse than that. Let's see what the new phone will give me... Thank you!
Restricting Pixel Ambient Service from running in the background helped a little for me and I haven't noticed it interfering with anything yet. Ambient Display seems like it uses more battery on the 3 XL than on my old 2 XL. I didn't even know you could restrict the Pixel Ambient Service but you can. I also don't use Adaptive Battery because it doesn't make a difference in battery for me.

This almost sounds like an Adaptive Battery issue. After a week of playing with this device, it has picked up on my habits and the battery performance started getting better over time.
Im getting 0.8%/hr standby and 10%/hr screen on. Is that OK?

This almost sounds like an Adaptive Battery issue. After a week of playing with this device, it has picked up on my habits and the battery performance started getting better over time.

The great kernel developer known as Flar2 once told me that if your active drain is under 12% and your idle drain is under 1%....your doing good. :good:

My active drain is 11.8 and my standby is 1.8. The AOD is definitely using more battery on the 3 XL than it did on the 2 XL. I wish I still had my 2 XL so I could test them side by side.

Is OnePlus still making the OnePlus 6

Are they? 6T to me is a mistake, on-screen fingerprint, that's slower, less responsive to get rid of the headphone?

6T is not a mistake. The on-screen fingerprint might be slightly slower than hardware sensor but it's not significant enough to make a real world difference. This leads to a significant increase in usable screen real estate. The battery is also much bigger than 6 and the notch is a aesthetic upgrade despite it still being a notch. You also have to realize that this is a T series, not a number series, it's not supposed to be a big difference from the previous model, yet the 6T is a decent upgrade imo.
I think is worse....no jack.

Agreed, no positive changes. It's the exact same hardware, same camera, same screen, same glass. The differences are negative, the screen fingerprint is slower and placed in a awkward place, back of the phone is more convenient and tactile feel of the hardware, can do blind. No headphone jack so you can have an inferior oddly placed fingerprint reader? That's just dumb.
Anyway, are they making the OnePlus 6 still? Been checking every day, nothing in stock.

Interesting. That's actually a good news for us, op6 owners, if someone decides to upgrade for something else the price for op6 will stay high up on Swappa. Just saying, I like my op6 8/256GB, it's a great phone but sometimes I'd get the 'butterflies' looking at the new devices 'n stuff they offer. Well, it's a crazy circle of infinity...

I prefer the OP6 myself and yes they are still in supply. Just ordered one for myself but have to wait up to 14 days but worth the wait for £399
The 6t has no headphone jack, slower fingerprint, and no led notification. The lack of LED is the biggest problem for me.
The battery is only 12% different, so I went with the 6
TL;DR:
I went with the OP6 over the junk known as the 6t. Have you seen the display issue the 6t users are having?
Edit: The OP6 is on sale for "cyber" week flash sale.

Long version:
I came from the LG v20 and before that the v10.. In terms of the hardware the v30 and v40 didn't have a removable battery and lower system ram, and No LED... I really missed the LED on my phone and using the zerolemon extended battery on my phone I had to rely on third party software to tell me if the phone stopped pulling power from the USB port. Now no phone has removable batteries.. BUT companies are battery cases for phones, so we will see how the internal battery can go before I have to replace it. The irony is that the 6t is a downgrade from the 6.... Finger prints are easy to pull from glass so no I don't want an in display finger print reader... Besides I came from the v20/V10 I liked the rear placement of the sensor. The missing headphone jack on the 6t... NO I don't want to carry a useless dongle that doesn't even split to allow charging via usb. I settled on the OP6 I couldn't be happier with my choice.. Ideally i want my cell phone around 5.5" with the thickness of a deck of cards with the battery capacity to match. I figure smart phones could have 150,000 MAH battery at that size. The battery saver function on the OP6 is impressive it allows me to access most apps with barely any issues, there's a delay with gmail, but a manual refresh solves that.

Really? 150,000mAh that's 150Ah, my car has 65Ah battery. You would probably need 2-3 days to charge it up with USB powered wireless pad.

I did my mental math wrong... NO surprise there... I meant 15000mAh... My note 3 has a 10000mAh zerolemon battery and that takes 8 hours to fully charge via usb... Wireless chargers (WC) are too slow at charging and with USB C port on phones WC is NOT really needed in my book. Plus the more times you charge a battery the faster it wears out. I want a minimum of seven days of battery life under heavy usage.. The whole point of a cell phone is to be mobile.
Seems no more are being made. I just went from S7 g930F to the 6 8gb version. So far I'm impressed. I could not go with T for same reasons outlined. No 3.5 nor led kills it. Was going to go for pixel 3 but the savings with the 6 were compelling.
Anyway, the 6 is a pretty great phone!

Pixel 3 Battery Life?

Hello,
How is the battery life on Pixel 3 (non XL)? Does it last a whole day with normal usage? What is the average Screen On Time?
Getting a P3 for 500$ from Google Store but have serious reservations about battery life after reading reviews? Is it worth getting?
I just got mine 2 months ago. I have about 300 apps installed. Most have been opened and therefore running stuff in background. I can Easily go all day without a charge. Some evenings I'm only at 50% before bed. I consider myself a medium user (not streaming a lot of video, etc). It was a much better experience than my early Pixel XL. Hope this helps.

I don't know if you're going to get the answer you're looking for because "normal usage", screen on time, apps installed, types of apps, network coverage, etc all vary widely from person to person. What works great for me might not at all for you.
If I have a normal use day I have about 5 to 6 hours of SoT. I've gotten 7+, it's about what my S10e got,.
However I am a heavy user, constantly rebooting and testing new modules and on Q beta so I can get anywhere from 2 to 4 but that is because I am HARDCORE draining the phone.

Thank you. Any idea on the screen on time that you are getting from the phone?

That is pretty good. Is that on the regular 3 or the XL Version?
Thanks.

Shouldn't screen on time be a parameter to gauge that with ?

I'm averaging about 2-4 hours per day of screen time per Digital Wellbeing.

That is not too great and does not give me much confidence. I have heard battery life on 3A is stellar. I had the Pixel 1XL and Nexus 6Pand after a few months, Battery life went bad on both those phones. Hence, someone apprehensive, considering all the negative I have heard about Pixel 3 battery right off the bat.

If the several months down the line degredation theory is accurate for pixels, then the 3a having stellar battery life may also be smoke and mirrors.
I had a 3a and sold it for a 3. Got $100 bb gift card when I bought it, sold it for $350. So I made $50 in that and bought my pixel 3 for $400. I think it's worth it for the extra $50 to have the better processor, water rating and wireless charging.
My battery life has been...ok with my 3. Absolutely nothing to write home about but certainly not the worst I've ever seen. Drain is a bit higher than I like to see, idle and active (1.5 and 13 respective, according to exkm). My screen in time per cycle is between 5-6 hours generally but that is a misleading number for to different setups and signal strength.
I say if you dig the device, get it. If you hate it, hell that's what swappa is for. I have bought and sold so many devices on there because they didn't meet my standards it because something else caught my eye.
I will be keeping this device for awhile. I really like the size and features. I'm sure I could boost battery by nurfing features but I am not interested in doing that. This has been excessively long so... Let us know what you decide. Hope my diatribe helped a little. If not... It was free, so don't complain

My Pixel 3 barely makes a day on a charge. Meanwhile, I use my old Moto X4 to stream music to my work headset, and it can do that for a whole day and still be at 60-70% battery by the end. I tried that with my Pixel, and I ended up having to use extreme battery saver mode by the end of the day.
My battery has been much better since I turned off mobile network always active in developer settings. Keeps idle drain will below 1% now. I couldn't figure it for the life of me why it was so high. Try it!
