I'm looking for a GPS app that tracks my movements but does not use the internet to update my movements on a map. I'm looking for something that just maps the movements by placing dots on a blank screen that I can view while I am moving. When I am done logging, it should be able to upload the logging file to my pc so I can load into Google Earth.
I want this type of app so it uses very little battery and does not hit the internet. I use to have a Blackberry Storm and they have an app called GPSlogger that did this and it worked great.
I have not been able to find any app that does this in the Android market.
Anyone know of something similar?
you would be better off getting a bluetooth track logger gps for 75. Gps in your phone will use 12+ percent an hour without data usage.
Google MyTracks may be your best bet..

i'll second that
Well, have a look at Locus.
- There are some settings to stay completly offline.
- If you don't want to use the internet on the go, you could also download maps on wifi and use them for offline use.
- It is able to connect to a bluetooth gps device without any 3rd-party-app.
- Recorded Tracks can be exported as *.kml and *.csv for later use on a desktop pc.
But if you just want to have the gps logging part, you'd better go for a real gps logger.

Clarus Places is an app to quickly save location information to the default android address book.
We're releasing a beta version to XDA before we release to the Android Market. While this is almost feature and code complete and we have tested extensively, we'd appreciate information on any bugs and / or suggestions ([email protected]).
What is incomplete?
The Help button is disabled.
Permissions:
- Coarse Location - For location
- Fine Location - For location
- Internet Access - For maps and Flurry
- System Tools - For start at boot for notification bar icon
Flurry:
We use Flurry to track downloads and exceptions. We only use the Internet Access permission to determine coarse location (Country). Also Flurry provides information on phone make/ model/ firmware.
Finally, we do not have access to the actual data. We only see aggregated data that Flurry makes available.
Others:
Clarus Places always will be free and with no ads.

Nice idea
First test was fine - using first network only and then GPS.
But the icon in the notification bar looks far too redmondish for my taste

I have been wondering for some time now, and I'm hoping the people who view this thread would probably have experience in this field and know the answer. I have probably 8 or 10 different apps that in someway incorporate the use of Google maps (satellite view). They all have the option the cache map data, so I don't keep re-downloading often viewed map areas. Do Google map caches, go to a single cache area, to be used by all programs...or am I saving the same data 10 times over on my phone, separately for each app? It seems like my memory is filling up faster than it should be, and I'm thinking this is the culprit??

I set location share in google maps in my son's smartphone (galaxy a5 with LOS 17.1). What I did :
1. maps has an opened firewall for wifi and lte in AfWall+, lte modem and mobile data is always active in this phone
2. maps is excluded from xprivacylua (nothing blocked)
3. maps has all permissions granted in the build in adnroid setting manager
4. maps has rights to auto start and run in bacground
5. maps is on list with no battery optimization
The sharing location works good after use of smartfon and some time after it.
When it is not used , android optimises itself , own services and apps for better battery work and location share is not updated .
Do you know which service , app or something else I have to add to list of apps without battery optimization for updating and share location all the time ?
Using power management will cause erratic behavior more often than not.

Default configuration of android is power management for all in the system except some . I added maps to the exception list.
Do you suggest to add all applications , user and system, to exception list ? Very sophisticated idea. Maybe is a different way ?
