Hello,
We're the developers behind Clarus Battery and Clarus Signal
What is it?
Clarus Places is an app to quickly save location information to the default android address book.
We're releasing a beta version to XDA before we release to the Android Market. While this is almost feature and code complete and we have tested extensively, we'd appreciate information on any bugs and / or suggestions ([email protected]).
What is incomplete?
The Help button is disabled.
Permissions:
- Coarse Location - For location
- Fine Location - For location
- Internet Access - For maps and Flurry
- System Tools - For start at boot for notification bar icon
Flurry:
We use Flurry to track downloads and exceptions. We only use the Internet Access permission to determine coarse location (Country). Also Flurry provides information on phone make/ model/ firmware.
Finally, we do not have access to the actual data. We only see aggregated data that Flurry makes available.
Others:
Clarus Places always will be free and with no ads.
Update
We just released the final version of the app in the market.

works fine via wifi. will try it on 3G tomorrow.
Nice idea
First test was fine - using first network only and then GPS.
But the icon in the notification bar looks far too redmondish for my taste
Will give this a try on 3G today.
I have been wondering for some time now, and I'm hoping the people who view this thread would probably have experience in this field and know the answer. I have probably 8 or 10 different apps that in someway incorporate the use of Google maps (satellite view). They all have the option the cache map data, so I don't keep re-downloading often viewed map areas. Do Google map caches, go to a single cache area, to be used by all programs...or am I saving the same data 10 times over on my phone, separately for each app? It seems like my memory is filling up faster than it should be, and I'm thinking this is the culprit??
thanks

I'm looking for a GPS app that tracks my movements but does not use the internet to update my movements on a map. I'm looking for something that just maps the movements by placing dots on a blank screen that I can view while I am moving. When I am done logging, it should be able to upload the logging file to my pc so I can load into Google Earth.
I want this type of app so it uses very little battery and does not hit the internet. I use to have a Blackberry Storm and they have an app called GPSlogger that did this and it worked great.
I have not been able to find any app that does this in the Android market.
Anyone know of something similar?
you would be better off getting a bluetooth track logger gps for 75. Gps in your phone will use 12+ percent an hour without data usage.
Google MyTracks may be your best bet..

i'll second that
Well, have a look at Locus.
- There are some settings to stay completly offline.
- If you don't want to use the internet on the go, you could also download maps on wifi and use them for offline use.
- It is able to connect to a bluetooth gps device without any 3rd-party-app.
- Recorded Tracks can be exported as *.kml and *.csv for later use on a desktop pc.
But if you just want to have the gps logging part, you'd better go for a real gps logger.
Hi
I am developing an android map based application. I am using Google Map and it is working perfectly as per my expectation apart from the following issue.
Issue- Whenever I launched my application, the application will load the tile again and again, which takes time, even it is the same location.
For this I am thinking that is there any way I can store few amount of tiles into cache so that when user comes to application, it can load map tiles from the cache, as Map application in android does.
or
I can use the cached map tile of Map application into my application, which is very hypothetical thought.
I have read about Brut but not sure how it will help in my context.
So If any body have any suggestions or feedback will be appreciated.
Thank you

Google Maps is nice. But, as a developer, consider using other map sources. Check the app Locus Pro: it's the best maps app for Android that I have seen. It uses a number of map sources, such as OpenMap, MapQuest, etc.
Locus allows the user to download maps to keep offline, and also has an option to cache all maps that are loaded online. That is: the user cache just grows and grows for offline use, while the user can also choose to download maps for cities or locations, all for offline use.
There is an open-source app called Mobile Atlas Creator (aka MOBAC), that allows the user to download (via PC) maps from various sources and in to various formats, to be used offline with apps for Android, iOS, etc. For instance, once can download maps in the same formats used by Locus Pro, RMaps, etc. (I used to use this, but now I download maps from within Locus Pro).
So, my point: Google Maps are really nice. But consider other map sources, and also offer the user an option to select the folder where maps are kept. So a user that already uses Locus can use the same cache for your application.
it makes no sense for several apps to use maps, but each one have to download them separately and not be able to share them.
What can it do?

Are you concerned with certain apps required permissions? Then this app is for you!
Base on your settings, this app will automatically turn OFF location and network connections when it detects that certain apps are running, thus leaving the apps no chance of leaking your data. After the apps finish running, pull down notification bar and you'll easily turn network and location services back on.
It works on both non-rooted and rooted devices.
Alternatively, this app can be used as an ad-blocker or data saver.
Performance Impact
===============
With over 300 apps monitored, on average the app utilizes less than 4% of CPU on a Nexus One.
There is no noticeable impact on battery life.
Required Permissions
===============
Access to GPS and coarse location are for probing the location service settings.
Create bluetooth connections and bluetooth administration are for probing Bluetooth status and controlling bluetooth adapter.
Change Wi-Fi state is for controlling Wifi adapter.

Looks useful! Even though I'm rooted, I'm hesitant to install apps that require root because of the obvious security issues. So non-root security apps are important.
I have a question though, will it block access for apps that run in the background, such as code run via Broadcast Receivers? If not, perhaps it could warn the user in such a case, because a malicious program could easily gather or transmit data in the background.

The app only monitors the current foreground process (the one that is dominating screen).
I'd suggest that, if an app runs a background service and raises a privacy concern, it is better disabled by other ways (uninstall, etc.)
There are two reasons why background services shall not be affected by the app:
- Background services may run a long time, thus disabling network or location services could cause much inconvenience.
- To disable location services, Privacy Protector will forward user to Location Settings page. Currently, if user decides not to take action to the settings and do not run the app, s/he can go back to home screen by clicking home button. However if Privacy Protector keeps forwarding user to Location Settings because a background service is running, it may be very inconvenient and could possibly annoy the user.
Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.
I guess many users aren't even aware that apps can run hidden in the background, let alone know how to detect background services. So I'm thinking about a warning to the user along the lines of "hey, you're blocking your 'Unhappy Avians' app, but Privacy Protector detected that app may run in the background, outside of our protection. If you're concerned, you may want to uninstall Unhappy Avians".

that sounds like a good idea! thank you!
Is it possible to get version of Privacy Protector that can run on Android 2.1 and less?
Is it independent of iptables?
p.s. App list must be sorted alphabetically

The app only uses features of Android API, it does not rely on iptables.
It has been tested on my Nexus One with Android 2.2 and 2.3 roms, I wasn't able to test it on 2.1 rom because I had difficulty to find one.
I've attached an APK which should be compatible with Android 1.6, but I'm unable to test it. Please give it a try.
for further updates.. can u hide the top icon?
thx.. great app
What's about more harder function - to block access only chosen apps?
If I want use Skype and deny App X, your app will turn connection off. But i don't want lose whole connection.
Has anyone tested this on Galaxy S2 please?
Thank you

That behaviour would only be feasible to implement on a rooted device

The top device which contributes to the 1200+ downloads is Galaxy S2. There has been 4 crash reports in total (the app occasionally crashes after loading apps.. I'm still investigating) but none of them came from S2.

wifi access
Would it be possible to distinguish between data and wifi (like Droidwall)?
The phone it's installed on, has a bad chip and shouldn't be rooted, but I'd like some apps to only have access to wifi, and other apps have access to both data and wifi.
Does not work on Nexus 4 with Jelly Bean
I ticked the LOC box next to Facebook app, saved, enabled... then opened Facebook app and posted a status. My location was right there in the status post
Hi everybody
I'm running a virtual android 7 - app name vphonegaga (faster better then vmos - in my opinion).
The host machine is LG G8S running android 11.
In the virtual machine - a certain service (within google play services) called "LocationAccuracyInjectorService" keeps getting disabled, even when being enabled manualy (using service disabler app).
has anyone encountered similar issue?
Any suggestions?
Thanx
Hey there
Same problem here GPS extremly laggy.
Didn't know about that specific service getting shut down. What I have found out, using the app GPS essentials, is that google location provider doesn't get a GPS fix at all. Further more, even when you get a fix using the GPS directly the satellites positions doesn't make sense they are positioned in a perfectly 12 clock like shape.
However after downloading the app you mentioned service disabler and enabling LocationAccuracyInjectorService and then checking GPS essentials app again google location provider will get a fix but will not update the location after that.
Hope this info will help a little.
Please inform if you found a solution
Forgot to mention that I'm using a huawei device.
Further more I've installed both chinese version (of vphonegaga app) and english version - that was installed via huawei app gallery - which means that the app was tested and found suitable for my device.
I thing it is safe to say that the problem is not with the host device.
Hope that this info will help too.
Hey there
The fake positions of the GPS satellites, that the GPS essentials app is showing, is reaffirming my susspision that something is tampering with the GPS feedback.
The vphonegaga app is aimed mainly towards gamers and there's a good chance that the developers of the app made sure that, this service will keep getting disabled for the sake of GPS spoofing.
There's also a possiblity that google play services themselves are detecting that the GPS sattelites locations are fake, and therefore disabling the LocationAccuracyInjectorService.
Either way, something keeps disabling that service. If we knew what it is, maybe we could find a way to work around it or simply prevent it from disabling the service.
I've been searching for an app or a way that will allow me to monitor and log the activity of that specific service, and see what keeps disabling it, but so far found nothing.
Don't blame this sleeping satellite - blame google!!!
Tasmin archers words, not mine...
Well the google part is mine
Jokes aside... The problem, that both of you are describing exists in VMOS as well.
Now VMOS is a virtual enviorment app that allows you to run different, various ROMs.
Therefore, VMOS itself, will not mess up your GPS, and it's very unlikly that all the VMOS ROMs that come with google services, have been tampered alike.
Therefore, the chances are - that google services themselves are disabling that specific service.
BTW - like I said I personly prefer VMOS, cause it is a much more sophisticated app with various (and editable) ROMS.
But I must say, that after checking vphonegaga, it does seem to run faster and better - for that specific android version 7.1.2

Are you the developer of this app?
Google says this app is not compatible with my Chromebooks. I realise that the app is optimised for a mobile phone but will it still work on Chromebook if I sideload it?
Will it track the data used globally via wifi regardless of whether it's via an Android app, Chrome Browser, or Linux?
I'm asking the question because this app's ability to manage multiple devices is the most useful feature.
Also, is there a backup and restore feature for all the usage data that is collected over time?
Can you provide the APK for sideloading? I didn't find it on APK Mirror or similar (Edit: I do find it on APK Pure)
THANKS

Yes I am developer of this app. Currently this app works only in android (sorry for not mentioning ).
You can monitor multiple android devices mobile data and wifi data usage by installing this app and Sigin with your google account. You need to add members in your account from profile section via email address. If they accept request then you can see mobile data and wifi data used by them. I have attached image how it looks like if they accept your request (image with heading see your families plan).
I have attached link of Google playstore in my post (blue in color) but I will attach sideloading apk too.
Thankyou for showing interest.
Thank you for your reply. I understand that Chromebook was not part of your main plan for this app - but Chromebook runs Android, so most apps work even when google says they are not compatible)
When I have time I will sideload the app and make some tests.
In my case, some devices will have the same google account, because they are all owned by me. Hopefully that will work too?

If you SignIn two different device with seperate email address, it will work fine and you can also monitor your device data usage.
