Hi all, I'm considering the S6 or the Note 5 but mostly on camera features. I absolutely love the manual shutter speed option (up to 10 secs) on the Note 5 but if it's something that can be ported to the S6 I'll go with the S6 since it's cheaper and has enough features for me. After all they're using the same camera hardware so the features should be software-related only. Any thoughts?
Look out for the Note 5 Port in the develoment section. They ported the Note 5 Rom to the S6. Though Camera anf Fingerprint is buggy.
Since the SoC and camera (?) is the same and software is similar, there isa very high change it can be (and will be) ported.
Thanks, I thought so. The problem is that Open Camera with the S6's newest update still only allow up to 1/1.2 sec of shutter speed, wondering how can a port enable up to 10 secs. Could it be that the cameras are different? :crying::crying:
The wide angle default camera known as the Ov12a10 from Omnivision is well known and has a spec shet on the web site. See here: http://www.ovt.com/download/sensorpdf/239/OmniVision_OV12A10.pdf
It is interesting that the telephoto (2x) lens on the Mi A1 is nominated as an ov 13880 i, also from OmniVision has no known spec sheet and is not in any of the end of life docs (EOL) on the web site I can find.
One site did come up with a editorial noting the camera but noted it as a 13mp sensor and vastly better frame rates for video than Xaiomi claims. See link below.
https://www.unifore.net/company-hig...-ov13880-and-ov5880-camera-image-sensors.html
I wonder if the Unifore site got things wrong or there is more to this camera than meets the eye.
As a side note, are people aware that to activate the second camera you need to go into options > manual > lens and click on on wide. By clicking on the "1x" symbol on the main screen of the camera app, you are still using the wide angle lens in digital zoom mode.
Wait so it doesn't switch the lenses while you zoom in and out? It's useless :/

I never said that. Reread my post. I said you need to change the lens in manual mode to get optical zoom. Clicking on the 1x button from the main screen only offers digital zoom.

I really didn't know till now, I wonder why they put that option for digital zoom there and not for optical zoom, that's pointless.

One possible use for it is to assist with checking focus, but other than that I would never use digital zoom.
If someone had a method of linking that 1x option to actually changing to the tele lens, that would be a nice modification.
2x button should change to optical zoom in very bright light only (sunny outside). If you want to force it, you need to use manual mode. I guess it's because tele lens has slower aperture and you have to raise the ISO or slower shutter speed or both to get a picture = grainy blurry photos.

There isn't a big change in aperture from the wide lens to the tele lens. I do find that the tele lens is softer than the wide on standard focus. But I am still of the initial belief that the auto focus on my phone is off in lower light and possibly in the tele... I have more testing to do as time permits.

You're right but I think no one is actually aware of this I mean even I wasn't until today.
This seems like a reference dual camera setup from OmniVision: http://www.ovt.com/news-events/corporate-releases/omnivision-and-corephotonics-announce-dual-camera-zoom
I think this was the easiest and cheapest solution to add a dual camera setup to a phone since no R&D had to be involved in the build. You can simply buy it and it has ready to go drivers for Android.
This phones works great, battery life is impressive, screen on time is really good (more than 7 hours for me) but the killer feature is the camera, so cheap... I bought this phone because my Galaxy S7 died(almost took fire on USB port) and needed a phone really quick.. but, honestly the camera is crap. I thought it was better camera when I was reading the reviews that afternoon my S7 died... next day I purchased A1 and ... suprise, bad camera was included!
Does anyone knows if using the Google camera api improves the quality?

They advertised it as flagship dual camera but lol, I wasnt expecting so much from it tho. But yeah, look around in this forum, there are guides to install pixel cam with/without root. And the picture quality imo is 10x better than stock ones (in low lights too!) . Explore buddy, explore! ?

Why you buy a phone for like 1/3 of the S7 price in the first place? But yes, the hardware is good, the stock app is the problem, GCam pics have double size compared to stock taken ones.

Because it was January, S8 were 'old' by then.... and S9 weren't launched yet.... so, in the meantime I decided to buy the cheap phone which everyone was talking about.... end of story, by April I ended up buying a mirrorless camera and taking a photography course online.
I kept the Xiaomi Mi A1, it has been updated OTA every month, latest security patch every month(not like Samsung that takes 6 months for security update and almost a year for Android version upgrade). Other good thing about the 'cheap phone' is that battery lasts whole day and more... it's crazy to remember that with the Galaxy S7 I had to recharge the phone by mid afternoon, now I arrive home by 7pm with 50% battery. On weekends I use the phone a lot more and easily I can get 7 hours of Screen On Time, point for the Xiaomi A1 (the S7 struggled to reach 5 hours).

The difference between stock camera and google camera api is night and day.
Wonder why can't OP or most manufacturers get the camera app right like Google does?
The stock camera on op6 is awful.
The camera has no wide angle and objects are too near than they actually are.
Normal or HDR is grainy work noise.
Pfa
Here's my picture. No edit, no nothing. I don't think that camera is pathetic..
Edit, forum seem to pixelate these over 7mb pics..
Let's see if this helps:
I didn't see the Panorama mode? Is OSS support this mode?
The OP6 is not known for his camera. Like every OP.
And in addition I agree that their stock camera app is far from the best seen on android.
Not that the needed options are not here. But this feels not ergonomic. Or maybe it's to early after having a new phone to say...

Which OSS version do you have ? In 5.1.7, Panorama mode is the last one on the bottom of the camera modes menu.

You can install many camera apps like Google. Search the Google Play store.
The stock camera on op6 is awful.
It's actually very good. Not GS9 good but close.
The camera has no wide angle and objects are too near than they actually are.
This camera uses EIS to alleviate shaky hands and walking shakiness. Stop doing drugs
Normal or HDR is grainy work noise.
There is some noise in dark shots, but nowhere near the previous generation cameras.
It's a very good camera.
Buy a pixel then? I don't understand people. This camera is just as good in most situations as the pixel camera and when it's not, it's damn close. If people are going to complain it's not as good as a pixel camera and it's that important to you then damn, spend $300+ more and get a pixel.
I'm not trying to be snarky but what are you expecting on a phone that is $300-$400 less than another phone? There is a reason you bought a $500 phone and not a $800-$1000 phone

Why not get a baby camera then?
Galaxy S9 is fantastic. Huge aperture, huge pixel size - perfect for moving objects and low light shots.
S9 is like $700.
S9 is a beautiful phone. Wait till Samsung.com unleashes its sales. The first sale was -$150 off on ATT branded S9 about a month ago. The second sale was -$200 off on Verizon branded S9 two weeks ago.
I bought the ATT one for a friend, requested and got it sim unlocked in 3 days.
Good deal.

I wouldn't call it "pathetic". I compare my Note 8 to my OnePlus 6 and have to say:
• The OP6 focuses better in videos than the Note 8. Tested by driving on average roads. All cars, signs, etc. were perfectly focused whilst the Note 8 really struggled focusing one single thing. Autofocus can't be turned off it seems.
• The OP6 stabilizes images and videos better than the Note 8. Tested by driving on average roads. OIS and EIS on OP6 is great. The Note 8 found its limits where the OP6 succeeded.
• More natural colors on the OP6 compared to the Note 8.
• OP6 only needs half the power to keep the camera running. The Note 8 really got hot in some situations, where the OP6 stood cool. Also tested by driving on average roads.
Sure: I miss the real 2x zoom on my Note 8. Night shots are better on the Note 8 too and even with some issues, the Note 8 wins. But it's a damn close win, because it should only be a matter of time, until good developers will do a dailydriver Google Camera port for the OP6.
And even if OP6 has its flaws: I love it more than my Note 8. Why? Find out by yourself.

I think it's more about the camera app, than the camera itself. Samsung allows you to change the aspect ratio, resolution, framerate, storage location, different grid sizes, gestures, and a dozen different modes including pro mode.
Hm. Grid can be changed up to the Golden Ratio. Framerate is also changeable: 720p with 480FPS and 1080p with 240FPS. Gestures... dunno. Never needed on my Note 8. Aspect is also here. The only thing missing: Different sizes for the photos. I'd like to go back to 12MP, because of better photos (seen from the technical side).
Sooner or later we will have a fully working Google camera. At worst after pixel 3 launch, but it will surely happen.

here's my gripes
> Panoramas aren't stabilized, so unless you are a machine while turning around being completely still it won't come out good
> Videos focus in and out so much when there are moving objects it makes it pointless
These two things bother me a lot
This best camera I used, after comparing to mi 8, Zenfone 5z, s8 and v30. V30 has the best manual mode. The 5z before latest update had terrible videos, I was I had purchased it to replace my v30 and pictures only came very clear during daytime.
I should preface this post by saying I am the proud owner of the soon to be legendary Pixel 2 camera and have owned the Pixel 3 for almost 2 weeks now, but I think we should all just come right out and say it:
The Pixel 3's camera is just a tiny step back from the Pixel 2.
Don't get me wrong, it's still fantastic compared to just about any other mass market cell phone camera, but the post-processing choices that Google made with the P3 don't seem to take full advantage of the hardware.
The sensor and lens combination between the P2 and P3 are nearly identical in every way except for the P3 reportedly has a slightly newer sensor model with claimed better dynamic range. Yet, in shots with challenging lighting (which is where the entire Pixel line excels), the P3's processing chooses to boost contrast so much that it ends up crushing blacks and destroying details in the shadows, leaving us with a Samsung Galaxy S7-like result - with colors that pop and leave shadow detail behind.
It is obvious the P3 has better bokeh effects than the P2, but like all the other software features, that enhancement will likely come to the P2 if it hasn't already with the modded P3 Camera APK.
Anyway, my point is that everyone expected Google to have the obvious best camera with the Pixel 3 this year because the Pixel 2 was still kicking butt a year after launch. I just don't think much of the tech community has been willing to admit what our eyes are telling us... the Pixel 3's camera is great, but probably not the undisputed champ.
And that makes me a little sad after dropping so much $$$ on this device. It's still the only phone camera I would trust in point and shoot situations, but I'm tempted to keep the Pixel 2 in my bag on vacations just for the photos. And it's not just me. Android Headlines made a great video showing the P3's photography prowess and shortcomings.
I really just want to know if anyone else starting to feel this way as well? If so, and if we start making some noise about it, could Google actually listen and adjust the post-processing? They've listened to us complain about everything else on these phones (speaker buzz, ram management, photos not saving, etc), it's gotta be worth a shot, right?
It is literally the same camera - Sensor and All.

Anandtech came out with their review and they say the camera performance is on par with Pixel 2 but produces slightly colder images. It's sad that Google is so complacent this year with the Pixel 3 hardware improvements.
https://www.anandtech.com/show/13474/the-google-pixel-3-review
It seems incredibly likely that a software update will improve the camera in due course. Nothing to worry about
I have noticed that front facing camera on Pixel 2 produces slightly less noise and result in again slightly sharper image. Situation is different on the back. Shooting both side by side indoor with lights on, Pixel 3xl produces more true to life , brighter and more than slightly sharper image!
Anyone owning s10e. Do you have such thing that camera diaphragm is being closed and reopened on every camera mode switch? In quiet room it sounds at least strange.
Is the sound troubling to you? Is it affecting image quality?
My s8 and s9 did it, so it seems like its normal.

Only sound. First time having Samsung + a phone with OIS and variable diaphragm. Thought it's a hardware issue.
+ I've already submitted a but about camera closing and reopening diaphragm on photo mode switch. It's definitely looks like a bug. No need to close it and reopen. But I guess one UI will be bugged for a while same as s10e line will be somewhat bugged and patched a lot.

Just received my S10+ today, so I have the same confusion as OP since it's my first Samsung phone. Does the diaphragm change even for switching from photo to video? This seems quite unnecessary given no change in light condition and can eventually cause wear and tear.
The only time it didn't change was when I switched from Slow Motion to Super Slow-Mo.
Hey I have the same 'problem' on my S10+ and wondering if it's normal or an issue... It does a click sounds when changing camera modes
If it's not affecting the quality of my videos or photos I wouldn't worry about it. Longevity of the mechanics of the part is something to keep in mind but I can't see it as something that would wear out before the warranty expires.
Update: I went to test the devices at my nearby retail stores.
All of the S10 devices have the same clicking sounds. The Note 9 was silent, while the S9 was barely audible.
I guess they just didn't dampen the sound as much or something to that effect.

OH, so you have real s10 phones in your local stores? Because in Ukraine official Samsung store guys actually told me that presented devices look like original BUT inside CPU is different, camera is somewhat the same (WTF does it mean O_O) and the only thing that matches real devices there is screen. So I couldn't actually reproduce that noise at store and the only thing that calmed me down was that other owners of S10 confirmed ticking noise.
Its normal. My P20 Pro rattles until I open the camera app, then the OIS kicks in and holds the lens still. Similar sort of thing, the phone isn't going to hold the camera active when not in use, wastes power.
Pubg lag
Guys does pubg stutters on ur s10.
Similar sound was experienced on my s7. S10 does the plus many other phones like nokia 1020 used to make similar noise. I don't think its a problem.
Sent from my Samsung SM-G973F using XDA Labs
Yes its the variable aperture switching between f 1.5 and 2.2. Its definitely louder on the S10. I have the S10+ and S10e and on both it's quite noticeable when opening the camera and switching modes. Does this on the google pixel camera port as well.
Guys this is NORMAL. The Galaxy S9+ did this, too, with its dual aperture.
It changes when opening some apps -- if it isn't supposed to always do it that often then Samsung can adjust it with a software update.
Ever used a real camera? They are much louder than this when changing.
My s9+ did not do this unless it switched aperture. Never when I opened the camera. My s10e does it every time camera is opened like it switches apertures every time.
