Galaxy s10e camera diaphragm noise - Samsung Galaxy S10e Questions & Answers

Anyone owning s10e. Do you have such thing that camera diaphragm is being closed and reopened on every camera mode switch? In quiet room it sounds at least strange.

Is the sound troubling to you? Is it affecting image quality?

My s8 and s9 did it, so it seems like its normal.

Only sound. First time having Samsung + a phone with OIS and variable diaphragm. Thought it's a hardware issue.
+ I've already submitted a but about camera closing and reopening diaphragm on photo mode switch. It's definitely looks like a bug. No need to close it and reopen. But I guess one UI will be bugged for a while same as s10e line will be somewhat bugged and patched a lot.

Just received my S10+ today, so I have the same confusion as OP since it's my first Samsung phone. Does the diaphragm change even for switching from photo to video? This seems quite unnecessary given no change in light condition and can eventually cause wear and tear.
The only time it didn't change was when I switched from Slow Motion to Super Slow-Mo.

Hey I have the same 'problem' on my S10+ and wondering if it's normal or an issue... It does a click sounds when changing camera modes

If it's not affecting the quality of my videos or photos I wouldn't worry about it. Longevity of the mechanics of the part is something to keep in mind but I can't see it as something that would wear out before the warranty expires.

Update: I went to test the devices at my nearby retail stores.
All of the S10 devices have the same clicking sounds. The Note 9 was silent, while the S9 was barely audible.
I guess they just didn't dampen the sound as much or something to that effect.

OH, so you have real s10 phones in your local stores? Because in Ukraine official Samsung store guys actually told me that presented devices look like original BUT inside CPU is different, camera is somewhat the same (WTF does it mean O_O) and the only thing that matches real devices there is screen. So I couldn't actually reproduce that noise at store and the only thing that calmed me down was that other owners of S10 confirmed ticking noise.

Its normal. My P20 Pro rattles until I open the camera app, then the OIS kicks in and holds the lens still. Similar sort of thing, the phone isn't going to hold the camera active when not in use, wastes power.

Pubg lag
Guys does pubg stutters on ur s10.

Similar sound was experienced on my s7. S10 does the plus many other phones like nokia 1020 used to make similar noise. I don't think its a problem.

Yes its the variable aperture switching between f 1.5 and 2.2. Its definitely louder on the S10. I have the S10+ and S10e and on both it's quite noticeable when opening the camera and switching modes. Does this on the google pixel camera port as well.

Guys this is NORMAL. The Galaxy S9+ did this, too, with its dual aperture.
It changes when opening some apps -- if it isn't supposed to always do it that often then Samsung can adjust it with a software update.
Ever used a real camera? They are much louder than this when changing.

My s9+ did not do this unless it switched aperture. Never when I opened the camera. My s10e does it every time camera is opened like it switches apertures every time.

Shaking the S6 makes a clicking sound

At first i thought something was broken inside my brand now S6 but apparently its the OIS of the camera. When the camera is inactive the OIS is loose and when shaking the phone fast it makes a (clicking) sound. When I activated the camera the sound was gone no matter how hard I would shake the phone. I hope thats how the phone is made and I don't have a defective unit. Please let me know if anyone else has noticed that. Thanks.
As far as I know, every phone with OIS will make this noise to a certain extent. On some phones it is more easy to hear, on others its harder, but it is still there nevertheless. No need to worry about it.

Thanks man. I had a Note 4 before and never noticed that.
All phones make noise if you shake it even if it doesnt have OIS its usually the autofocusing mechanism.
That's normal for cameras with the OIS. I'm not sure how they exactly work in smartphones, but my Olympus OM-D for example uses a magnetic field for the 5-axis sensor stabilization. So once the camera is turned on the sensor is basically floating in a magnetic field, and when it's turned off it's "loose" - that's where the noise comes from. Nothing to worry about, it's normal.

Yep, I just tested my S6, and if the camera is on, there is definitely less clicking sounds coming from the camera when you shake it.

In daily usage you usually don't really notice it. It's not that loud and takes a bit of shaking. Otherwise they might keep the VCM powered up all the time, but that would be a waste of battery life.

I have a s6 that only makes noises when camera app is open.
A sound of moving parts like and sale camera focusing.
If the app is open if if I tap near the camera I can always reproduce the sound.
What could it be. I have an defective phone?

Mine does the clicking sound when off and sometimes when you open the camera app, the OIS mechanism start to shake until obtains focus, kinda scary, I think is showing signs of something malfunctioning .
Yes that is what happens to me.
It's not a good sign. I don't know what to do and if it is normal

Yes. I am getting the clicking sound when opening the cam app as well. Camera works fine afterwards though. How can it be fixed?
This is normal. It's the OIS elements of the rear camera shaking around when electronically deactivated.
This is not a fault and is part of the normal operation of a mobile OIS camera.
Once activated it shouldn't audibly shake. It's operation is similar to most stabilization gimbles when unpowered.

The clicking sound is also present in my S6 with the camera app off. Turning it on romoves the clicking sound.

Normal, all OIS systems (even those in my $3000 lenses) rattle a little when not powered (and make a faint noise when operating in the case of the lenses).
I'm also experiencing the OIS shake upon opening the camera app on my s6. It's done it twice today - I open the camera app and the image shows blurry as it struggles to focus, the lens shakes quite vigorously, making the phone vibrate, it makes a loud clicking noise and the image shakes, firstly for around 10 secs, then around 5 secs the 2nd time it happened. It's happened in both Samsung camera and Snapchat.
Running French OTA 5.1.1 on S6.
Anyone else having this? Is this usual behaviour or a sign of a defective unit?
Anyone else having this issue? I'm getting the OIS shake nearly every time I open the camera app now...

Poor close-range focus?

Hello all,
Just picked up my Pixel (in blue) and I'm coming from the S7 Edge.. Anyways, one of my closest buddies just proposed to his girlfriend yesterday.. when I was trying to capture a close image of her ring, the camera on the Pixel wouldn't focus. I had to pull the camera away from the ring about 10" before I could get it in focus, which ends up not being very detailed since it's so far away. My S7 edge was able to focus on close subjects up to about 3" or so and give nice bokkeh behind the subject. Anyone else having this issue with their pixel?
The closest I can get my phone to focus is about 4-5". Cameras aren't really good at doing that either way. I would recommend you back up to 10" or so and just use the zoom. I wouldn't call this an issue. Try and get your phone to focus on something else and really see if it won't do it (I doubt it). It was probably just the lighting or the situation. I easily got my phone to focus on my laptop close, but not hand. Just depends

Yeah I tried in brighter light today and the issue is still apparent. I'm guessing the camera just can't focus at a very close range like the Samsung could. Something to get used to I suppose

You could try OpenCamera. It has a macro mode.
It focuses the same if not better than my s7 did... Real close up shots with the s7 struggled to focus correctly as well.
I have the S7 flat and the Pixel, well the HTC 10 has the same issue as the Pixel, but yes, the S7 focuses brilliantly on close up objects but the pixel and the HTC 10 cannot get anywhere near as close. About 5" closer on S7.
On a side note, Jewellery is very difficult indeed to photo with all three phones, but Pixel and HTC 10, forget about it.

Yeah I was thinking the fact that it was jewelry might have been the issue but I tested in great lighting on standard objects and had the same issue as her ring. S7 has much better focus
I just found this out today... so wonder if anyone has any hints or tricks... ? I thought it was a skin that was on the glass when I first got the phone.. but after removing it i still had issues focusing on close objects..
I picked Google Pixel at the local store and BAM, has crappy minimum focusing distance, totally cannot compare with OnePlus 5 (or even OnePlus 2). I think the lens is fixed focus, is physically unable to focus closer. Just bad design, shame on you, Google!
It can focus closer (not as close as some phones), but it appears slightly bugged out.
The macro level achieved while it autofocuses during the launching of the camera application is slightly better sometimes than it is when you manually focus.

Didn't like S7 Edge at all.

I have used LG G3 for 2 years then after 1 week of Lg G4 usage found out its battery is thrash ordered myself a 2017 barcoded Samsung G935F.
7.0 Nougat update completed.
Pros:
Good battery endurance.
Does not overheat easily.
Thin and light.
Cons:
Impossible to type while laying in bed or armchair bcs there is no palmguard so you keep pressing home or back button during typing.
Camera isnt better than a g3 or g4 as quality wise.
Fingerprint does not work perfectly.
There is no sound volume slider in drop down menu this sucks as hell.
Most apps and websites are not edge screen compatible so you end up sliding page left or right to read.
Does not have hardware for remote controlling.
Flashlight isnt bright enough.
I am open to suggestions as long as they are meaningful.

Not sure what you mean by not edge compatible. Website and apps work the same way as any flat screen with just a little distortion on the edge but doesn't affect any usability since it's still visible and readable.
Flashlight have 5 level of brightness and level 5 are super bright I start to worry it will burn. Maybe you're on level 1.

Thank you. I have recorded (default settings, did not touch anything) my sister and dad next to sofa and with G4 and S7 in a row and then streamed video to UHD TV, both looked same except S7 was zoomed in so I disabled stabilizator in options and streamed again. It was same quality. Lights, colors everything.

Thank you for your reply.
Fingerprint reader is too fast to judge I guess, I had to re-apply adding finger process several times to make it working more properly.
When I surf the web, some websites' texts are starting from the very edge screen (left) so I can't read first letters of comments or titles. Not sure how to fix that or those websites need to fix it. This does not happen in apps like Youtube or Facebook, must be optimized already.
Sound slider it is shown when I use hardware sound buttons but I would love to see it also next to brightness slider when I drag down the top menu like in LG. I am not allowed to post an image url yet.
This model isn't customized by any carrier and more like an international unit. Only samsung apps are pre-installed.
I didn't know there was levels for brightness, I will check it out and thank you for that. Hope that level is auto applied also to Flashlight shortcut when I enable it.
My biggest problem is to be able to use phone while laying in bed, holding phone on air and typing, some of my hand have to touch hardware buttons and its not solved yet.
I think I need a case to have more space for holding phone on air and type properly.
Thank you guys for your comments. I have searched the web and did not find much about these worries so I had to make a thread.
you know nothing john snow
@fatihso
Sorry. Respectfully Disagree with you..
I`m using this device for almost one year. I don`t have these isssues (specially regarding camera). I`m happy with this device.
+ for the volume slider in notifications! I have it on my ipad but I have to press a physical button on my phone.
I think he's not wrong on that camera part. Believe me I love this phone and its camera. I had a 6P and Note 4 before. Even though I was sure the S7 captured much better pics, lately when I compared 6P and S7, I found the 6P doing better at post processing with HDR mode. S7 oversharpens images and it looks quite horrible sometimes, specially portraits.
And about the clarity thing, yeah 12 megapixels vs 16 megapixels. It shows when zoomed in. But overall S7 camera is much better than other smartphones (taking in consideration video, low light, pro mode etc).
I think in daylight the G4 may take better pics cos of higher resolution (visible when viewed on a bigger screen). Not sure because haven't used a G4 before.
G4 pro mode doesn't compare with s7 edge...try take a pic at midnight with G4 In pro mode at 30s and one with s7 edge at 10s..see who takes it better...LG?
Obvious troll is obvious.
I have this phone for over one year now,its a great phone, but I would like to make my observation about the camera quality too:
its a great camera for scenes for sure, but for human faces, from a bit distance, will blow them out of proportion due to its large pixels letting in too much light in bright conditions.
And also I miss the volume control from the drop down menu without pressing the hardware keys.
everything else is great and I love it a lot.
I have s7 edge for a year now.
Your cons are funny
1) It is possible, maybe you have small hands, that thing doesnt happens to me.
2) Camera is ok, comparing it to g3 is...idk it's silly.
3) If you set up 4x fingerprints 2x left 2x right, make sure you swipe it in all directions. Mine works much better than on marshmallow, 99% of the time.
4) In dropdown menu, you have ringtone, media, notifications and system tones. Where is a problem there?
5) I am using UC browser, no problems in web surfing.
6) IC port missing, the only one annoying thing for me, cant use it as a remote control sometimes.
7) You have free edge app where you can adjust level of flashlight.
The biggest problem for me is the battery after one year. It's capacity is much smaller, and SOT isn't as good when I bought it.

OMG troll kiddie
camera not good LOL
I love the phone but I will admit the camera is no where near as good as my g4.
But I do prefer the s7 edge because it doesn't bootloop. Lol.
Only joking . Apart from the camera the s7 edge is better in every way .

On the finger print sensor, I set both thumbs and both index fingers with multiple angles so I can unlock the phone without having to line up my fingers every time. Other than wet or dirty fingers I haven't had any issues at all. I'm even going to set my touch screen bike gloves as a finger print so I can unlock it when I ride too.
Thank you for replies guys,
It's been like 5 days and I am getting used to the phone. I still don't have any case or alike.
I still have problem typing while on bed. It's not going to be solved without a case to stop my hand touching bottom of the phone while typing in air. My hands are big.
Camera, it has a good camera but in my 1st post I mentioned I recorded a video and then streamed it to TV and I didn't see any difference so it was based on that. I didn't see its worse or better, it felt the same output.
I still would love a volume slider in drop down menu without pressing hardware button. Helps alot if your phone is on table and during watching videos/playing games, you won't need to hold phone and press volume button. Also double tap to lock/unlock phone. I tried some apps but they felt like draining battery after giving them administrative permissions to monitor system.
Anyway, thanks again for your comments.
You had it for 5 days. Man you aren't allowed to speak anything, please.... Use Nova Launcher, standard launcher is annoying. There you can use double tap to lock the phone. And for using it in bed, you just don't know how to.

The s7 camera is decent but it's clearly optimised for low light with a 1.7 aperture where it is superb.
It's all about compromising and Samsung has probably quite rightly assumed that most folks will snap their sprogs and pets often in less than ideal conditions.
As an enthsiast I have taken some great shots and provided links before but I admit that 12mp on a fixed lens camera may be inadequate if you want to crop or print a little larger. Samsungs own S6 resolves better in good light thanks to 16 mp.
I haven't read up about the S8 camera yet but it uses algorithm to supposedly improve.
That's not enough for me so I see if the Note 8 brings something useful to the table (not just camera wise) to make me upgrade. If not its the next iphone or the S9.
Very happy with the S7 otherwise in every respect.

Why is the stock camera app so pathetic? ?

Wonder why can't OP or most manufacturers get the camera app right like Google does?
The stock camera on op6 is awful.
The camera has no wide angle and objects are too near than they actually are.
Normal or HDR is grainy work noise.
Pfa
Here's my picture. No edit, no nothing. I don't think that camera is pathetic..
Edit, forum seem to pixelate these over 7mb pics..
Let's see if this helps:
I didn't see the Panorama mode? Is OSS support this mode?
The OP6 is not known for his camera. Like every OP.
And in addition I agree that their stock camera app is far from the best seen on android.
Not that the needed options are not here. But this feels not ergonomic. Or maybe it's to early after having a new phone to say...

It's actually very good. Not GS9 good but close.

This camera uses EIS to alleviate shaky hands and walking shakiness. Stop doing drugs

There is some noise in dark shots, but nowhere near the previous generation cameras.
It's a very good camera.
Buy a pixel then? I don't understand people. This camera is just as good in most situations as the pixel camera and when it's not, it's damn close. If people are going to complain it's not as good as a pixel camera and it's that important to you then damn, spend $300+ more and get a pixel.
I'm not trying to be snarky but what are you expecting on a phone that is $300-$400 less than another phone? There is a reason you bought a $500 phone and not a $800-$1000 phone

Galaxy S9 is fantastic. Huge aperture, huge pixel size - perfect for moving objects and low light shots.
S9 is like $700.
S9 is a beautiful phone. Wait till Samsung.com unleashes its sales. The first sale was -$150 off on ATT branded S9 about a month ago. The second sale was -$200 off on Verizon branded S9 two weeks ago.
I bought the ATT one for a friend, requested and got it sim unlocked in 3 days.
Good deal.

I wouldn't call it "pathetic". I compare my Note 8 to my OnePlus 6 and have to say:
• The OP6 focuses better in videos than the Note 8. Tested by driving on average roads. All cars, signs, etc. were perfectly focused whilst the Note 8 really struggled focusing one single thing. Autofocus can't be turned off it seems.
• The OP6 stabilizes images and videos better than the Note 8. Tested by driving on average roads. OIS and EIS on OP6 is great. The Note 8 found its limits where the OP6 succeeded.
• More natural colors on the OP6 compared to the Note 8.
• OP6 only needs half the power to keep the camera running. The Note 8 really got hot in some situations, where the OP6 stood cool. Also tested by driving on average roads.
Sure: I miss the real 2x zoom on my Note 8. Night shots are better on the Note 8 too and even with some issues, the Note 8 wins. But it's a damn close win, because it should only be a matter of time, until good developers will do a dailydriver Google Camera port for the OP6.
And even if OP6 has its flaws: I love it more than my Note 8. Why? Find out by yourself.

Impractical. I use my wife's S8 most of the time.

I think it's more about the camera app, than the camera itself. Samsung allows you to change the aspect ratio, resolution, framerate, storage location, different grid sizes, gestures, and a dozen different modes including pro mode.
Hm. Grid can be changed up to the Golden Ratio. Framerate is also changeable: 720p with 480FPS and 1080p with 240FPS. Gestures... dunno. Never needed on my Note 8. Aspect is also here. The only thing missing: Different sizes for the photos. I'd like to go back to 12MP, because of better photos (seen from the technical side).
Sooner or later we will have a fully working Google camera. At worst after pixel 3 launch, but it will surely happen.

OP6 has a pro-mode, I just point and clicking so I don't use it but it's there.
here's my gripes
> Panoramas aren't stabilized, so unless you are a machine while turning around being completely still it won't come out good
> Videos focus in and out so much when there are moving objects it makes it pointless
These two things bother me a lot
This best camera I used, after comparing to mi 8, Zenfone 5z, s8 and v30. V30 has the best manual mode. The 5z before latest update had terrible videos, I was I had purchased it to replace my v30 and pictures only came very clear during daytime.

S8 to S10e

Hi, I'm currently using a S8 plus. I'm thinking off upgrading to the S10e. Has anyone who currently owns this device confirm if the S10e is a good upgrade from the S8 plus? Is battery much better? Is camera significantly better etc etc?
Any help and feedback is appreciated.
Thanks

Did exactly that while also having the S9 for a week. S8->S9 is a slight upgrade. Camera is a bit better, speakers and stereo-sound is a nice upgrade and it is slightly snappier. The One UI 2 Upgrade also brings much better RAM Management and Apps in the background close less often and the new Fingerprint location is easier to reach. Battery seemed slightly better but the S8 was also older and so might not have had its full capacity in comparison.
S8/S9->S10e is a much bigger upgrade. Camera is leagues ahead and the extra wide angle gives you so much more room to play with. Snappiness again increased and you absolutely feel the 2GB more RAM throughout the day (No closed Apps in the background). Battery seems the same in my use case to the S9. The speakers feels to be a downgrade from the S9 tho as they start crackling when on (near) full volume while the S9 speaker seemed better tuned. The new fingerprint sensor in the power button is also nice to have as i often want to take a glance while the phone is lying on the table. Missed the function to unlock without having to pick the phone up since i left my S7 behind.
All in all the S10e is a distinct upgrade over the S8. If anyone reading this got an S9, then its mostly the camera and maybe the extra RAM depending on your use case. It won't feel as a big upgrade if your already running One UI 2 and don't have Apps closing on you or want the latest camera tech.
With GCAM (look for Zexynos) the S8 and S9 look the same btw and easily crush the S10(e) in many cases.
All the above is for the Exynos variants. With Snapdragon speed increases could be bigger but battery differences could be lower.
Sorry but my opinion after upgrading from an S8 to S10 is don't do it.
I have found the camera on the 10e to be worse in every way from the S8.
My wife usually takes my old phone each time i upgrade but she has already told me she does not want this one when i change and i may decide to get rid of it early even though i only got it in September 19.
In daylight, the camera is fine but as soon as you move in doors to artificial or low light, it is woeful.
If you zoom in the pictures are full of noise and they look fake, i have pictures where skin has large chunks looking waxy or plastic, way too over processed.
If you look at Samsungs own forum for S10/S10E you will find loads of posts all around the same issues.
What makes it more annoying is the adverts and initial reviews stated the camera was professional quality yet a recent write up i seen about the soon to be released S11 was that it aimed to improve on the S10 camera which was inferior to the Pixel 3.
Other features of phone are decent but the S8 is also a very capable phone.
My own intention for the future is to move away from Samsung despite being with them since the S2 as it is the first time i have felt the new phone is inferior to the previous one.
Good luck with whatever you decide to go with.
Thanks for the replies. In all honesty I'd prefer to get the S10+ but it seems to be quite expensive still. I was thinking towards the S10e instead since it's cheaper but might hold out for something else.
