Unusual eye strain on Mix 2S? - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Questions & Answers

I have used a number of other phones, typically I'm a moderate phone user, looking at phone about 1-2 hours per day.
Since I bought the Mi Mix 2s, I often feel eye fatigue and light headache after looking at the phone. I tried reading mode and automatic brightness on and off. But it seems not helping much. If I reduce the time looking at the phone, it helps.
This never happened to other phones I used in the past.
Not sure if it's just me or a common thing for Mix 2S?

I've been using this phone since June (~3-6 hours/day) and never had any problems with eye fatigue or headache... Did you try filtering blue light?

Thanks for confirming. Yes, I tried reading mode on with warm color, but seems it didn't help much. I guess could be my eyes are sensitive to something on the Mix 2s screen (like PWM or sth.)

I don't think PWM is the problem. Notebookcheck.com tested this phone and they wrote: "Some PWM flickering occurs in the IPS display, but only if the brightness is reduced to 36% or lower. At 1168 Hz, the PWM frequency is very high, so that even a sensitive person should not feel any impact from this."

I had the same issue with mix 2s, it was the black version and the screen was a little bit yellowish. It was very unpleasant to look at. Now having another one, I don t seem to be having the same eye strain. The new one is the white variant.

Mine is a black version too. Maybe screens are manufactured by different vendors for different batches/variants.

I do get eye strain when using it at low brightness especially at night, I feel like my eyes have to focus really hard when the brightness is low. But that happens only with the mix2s, on samsung phones for example, I have no issues at all.
Try to keep the brightness at values higher than 30%, for me it helps immediately.

That's probably related to PWM. I also found that turn off automatic brightness could help a bit.

Is the screen resolution really that bad?

I'm hearing really negative reviews on the tab plus screen resolution as it's not great outside in the sun and it is unbearable. Is this true? Do you guys believe the screen resolution to be really that bad? Thanks.
The screen resolution has absolutely nothing to do with sunlight readability so I don't really understand what you mean here

Don't know if it's against the rules but one was from Cnet. Another user was talking about it as well. Don't flame me, i'm just trying to see if it's all hogwash per say because i'm really considering getting a galaxy tab plus.
the resolution is fine for my eyes. I don't quite get what all the hype about resolution is these days... My computer monitor is around 100ppi... Why do I need a tablet or phone that has 400ppi?
What about the brightness level. That's the issue I've heard some things about. People are saying that the GT+ is very dim and difficult to see outside.

I can't comment on that, really. 99% of my usage is indoors, and I might have to wait until May before there's another sunny day where I live. Then again, the only tablet-like devices I've ever seen that are actually good in the sun are e-ink devices (kindle touch, nook touch, etc)

Again, some sources for where this brightness issue is coming from would certainly shed some light (excuse the pun)?
I have to agree with garyd9 here. My tablet lives indoors most of the time. The few times I've been outdoors with it I was able to crank up the brightness to where I had no issue with seeing the screen. Typically I leave the brightness set between 20-35% indoors and occasionally to as high as 45-50% depending on the light in the room. In full dark I run it to minimum as its too bright. Maximum is insanely bright and I can't imagine many scenerios where I would need it to be that bright.
It should be noted that I don't use the auto brightness as it is wholly inadequate for the purpose. I imagine that users who are complaining of dim screens are relying on the auto brightness feature and not adjusting the brightness manually. Overall I find the tablets brightness to be more than capable of handling the job.

You may also consider checking out the tablet in the store if possible. Stores are usually very well lit inside and should give you an excellent idea of the tablet's display capabilities.
For future reference so there's no confusion: your initial post contained contradictory information. You were asking about screen resolution when you really meant brightness. Which, as captnodegard pointed out, are two completely different things. It's helpful to use the correct terms when asking for advice. It's also best to cite sources when referring to other critical reviews, as some people may not have seen those reviews.
Good luck in your decision!

THIS TAB SUCKS!!!! (I'm referring to Ainol's Novo7 Tablet. haha).
Anyways, I have a lot of experience using the GT+ outdoors since i always bring it with me in my college. Most of the times i use it outdoors when the sun is in its full glory. I have a matte screen protector which is why sun reflection is not an issue. However, I have to increase the brightness to 80% just so that i can have a pleasant view on the screen. 60% brightness is usable but I love the colors when I'm using it with 80%.
I also notice that the back gets hot whenever i turn FULL brightness on. Which is why, i capped myself to only increase brightness to 80%.
However, I live in the Philippines where a 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) is normal which could have contributed to the back heating up.
In my opinion, the screen brightness was too dim. Particularly in auto brightness. Compared to my Sony s and htc flyer, I wasn't impressed. Selling mine because of this and other disappointments.

What "other disappointments"? Just curious.
I routinely use the tab as a TV in the car during traffic on my commute and if the sun is behind me then its essentially unwatchable at 100% brightness but aside from that it works fairly well.
I don't know how well it stacks up against other 7'' offerings except the Nook Tablet which I had tried out first in my hunt for 720p playback and the two seem similar in screen brightness.
I have noticed the 7+ does not feel as bright as my 10.1 but overall it works well enough outdoors and no screen except e-ink really works well in direct sunlight anyway.
I back up that last claim with testing done on:
Galaxy S and S II
iPhone 4 and 4S
iPad 1 and 2
Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 7+
The time I tried to use my laptop outside after I said "Gee it sure is nice outside"

The inability to customise mini apps, disappointing. This is available on 7.7. Also, the peel application is unable to control several of my devices...e.g. found no support for VCR. Found Sony S much better for this. Poor position of power button allows frequent accidental activation whilst working with device. I admit latter point could be due to my own clumsiness

Something strange with the screen, need your advise

Hi,
I got my S6 4 days ago and so far I'm really happy with it.
I have a tiny thing with my screen, can't even call it by a name and definitely don't know if it is an issue, so I'll try to describe it.
I noticed it by a mistake... after I got it, I opened the device, played with it to drain the battery in order to fully charge it.
When it went to 5% the device has reduced the brightness automatically to save the battery and than it appeared...
A one, look a like white pixel, somewhere around the middle of the screen that I didn't (and couldn't) notice before.
It stayed there no matter what i did or in which app I used.
After I got to 1% I plugged it to the power to charge it and than, when the brightness was automatically got brighter, it looked like
It disappeared... all looked fine.
After playing with it, I can summarize that I can clearly see this white pixel in 3 occasions:
1. When closing the screen, it appears for a millisecond on the black, like flashing and than the screen is shut off.
2. When opening the screen, the same, for a millisecond, like flashing.
3. When reducing the brightness.
In addition, if I am really trying, I can barely see it even in almost full brightness but just because I know it is there.
I understand that it is always there and because the brightness is high I can't almost see it.
I can say for sure that no one can see it if I won't point on it or mention it, even when closing the screen, you won't see it
unless you know it's there and you saw it after reducing the brightness.
Another strange thing (or maybe not) is that I took screenshots so I will be able to show it to you but it is not appearing over it
Even on a black screen - saw it but it is not there in the picture.
I can live with it, unless it is something can effect in the future. this is my only worry.
I know that the easy way is to go with the warranty, but as there are other issues with the screen like pinkish/yellow/green
Maybe if it's not an issue, better to leave it like that.
I really will appreciate your advise and opinion.
Dial *#0*#. Go Red, Green, Blue, Dimming. If the dot it's still visible in any of the tests you might have a dead pixel.

Did it, and pretty much the same as I described.
Red, Green, Blue - Nothing
Dimming - See it just after dimming is happening, meaning just after the second click (on first click see nothing).
So, it's dead? half dead?
Can it be worse?
Like I wrote, it is bother me just because:
1. I know it's there
2. Mostly because I'm afraid how it will effect in the future or if it means that my screen is defect.
What do you think?
Thanks for your help.
This is a strange issue, normally the pixel is either dead or not, whats even stranger is that you and others are suffering from dead pixels, i tought this was a thing of the past with oled screens but clearly im wrong.
I have 1 suggestion for you, put on your google chrome browser in your phone, a very dark gray (not black) picture and see if you can spot that pixel in that background and report back please, while viewing the picture, play with the brightness, put it manual on max manual on medium and manual on low, be sure to check it in a dark-ish environment.
Same same.
In a room with regular lights:
Can spot it on full or 6/8 contrast just because I know it's there and even than it is really hard to notice it.
When put it on medium it is more visible but I'm not so sure that in "regular" looking someone will see it unless he will look for it or by a mistake it will jump on his eyes.
When put it in lowest - it is very clear and shine.
In a dark room:
Can spot is all the time but:
On full or 6/8 contrast it is noticed but not shine. like a brighter gray.
On medium or the lowest contrast - it is very visible - clear and shine.
Was your S6 ever opened? ) Maybe you have a small piece of dust under the glass? Screen protector? Try to check if it's visible in direct sunlight with the screen off.

It wasn't open, it is brand new.
I have a glass screen protector - can something like dust cause this kind of an issue? I don't think so (bit don't know of course) as if so I would see it all the time + it wasn't like showing/glowing for millisecond when closing the screen.
Doesn't' it?
Never leave your battery die! This is a common mistake people make. Lithium ion batteries needs to be charged as often as possible never leave it die as it will deteriorate the battery.
That strange pixel will probably settle after some use. The pinkish colour on the screen seems like a lot of people have that problem. That would be the only reason I would send that back for warranty
Hi,
I think that it is indeed a dead pixel. However as your phone has such high resolution and pixel density, I think it is harder to see sometimes.
Regarding the future of this problem, I don't think it will affect you more than this. I've owned some devices with dead pixels and never ever they gave me problems (my good ol Nintendo DS had 2 haha, I've been playing it since 2006 IIRC). But if you want professional guidance, maybe it's a good idea to take the phone to a Samsung Technical Center or something like that and show them the dead pixel (or try), and also talk about the pinkish screen.
All the best,
~Lord

Thanks for your help.
I went to the local Samsung store and it is indeed a dead pixel (or whatever) - They gave me a brand new device.
Regarding the battery, thanks for the information, I wasn't aware of it at all, I did leave it to die at first use as I was away, but anyway, even without knowing it, Today I charged it at around 30%
as usually I'm not waiting for it to die, but from now on I will give it more attention.
Thanks all.

[ALERT] This Phone's display has PWM flickering

Yes, pixel 3xl is having pwm flickering if the brightness is less than 80%.
Just in case if you don't know what this does: This gives serious daily headaches and eye strain & with no doubt will effect your eyes and neural brain things.
I am not aware of this before buying the phone, so just want to let others know about this before buying it.
Reported to support but they are asking to wait for monthly software update. But i believe this is related to hardware.
EDIT: To see the flickering you need to record the flickering phone with another phone. Then you could see lines running on the display. These lines are the result of PWM(Cheap - cost-cutting technology to control the device brightness) flickering. Flickering is much clearly exposed if recorded in slow motion.
And this will not affect every user. Only to certain people who are sensitive with their eye and brain nervous system.
EDIT: The august Update obviously did not remove the flickering, as it is related to hardware, not software.
The senior customer person requested to give the mobile to service and they replied back after 10 days that it is "as intended" i.e it has no issues and returning the phone.
So, if in case you are sensitive to eyes and neural activities and planning to buy any OLED or Pixel phones, just want to help you with this information. Suggest checking the phone in physical outlets by recording the display before buying the device.
Huh...
This doesn’t affect everyone just those that are sensitive to it

DC dimming

Greetings all
I want to know if dc dimming actually helps.
I have problems with oled screens giving me massive headaches. Please if you dont have issues or dont believe that pwm effects people Dont Comment.
I am not new to using phones at all, but as Ive gotten older my eyes have gotten more sensitive and technology has gotten so much better, Ive been very limited in my choices when it comes to new phones. I had the 1plus6t and absolutely Loved it, unfortunately it was the worst for me as far as causing blazing headaches and actually feeling sick. I am very interested in this phone so if you have experience with pwm and with dc dimming, let me know. Thanks!

I am sensitive to screen flicker too. I couldn't use amoled screens before oneplus 7.
Dc dimming definitely works and it helps (at least for me). It doesn't eliminate PWM flicker completely but makes it much more tolerable.
It doesn't give me headaches, but the OnePlus 7 screen hurts my eyes like crazy. DC dimming doesn't help.
However it does appear to show less flickers when taken with my camera. It still shows a lot of flicker at the lowest brightness settings.

Question Screen burn

Can using the galaxy watch 4 for prolonged periods with very bright active screen or AOD (as in some of the Watchmaker app) cause screen burn? Thanks. Sorry bad English.
The brighter it is, the faster it degrades.
I avoid using them in direct sunlight or over 50% brightness except very briefly.
After 2 years of heavy usage my N10+ show no signs of degradation. Blue pixels are the first to fail generally. Red the last. Green is the wavelength the human eye is most sensitive to.
My Samsung Gear S3 Classic was used with AOD about 9 hours a day, every day, for 3 years without any "burn in" problem. I don't know why the GW4 would have any problem doing at least the same. Some reports of it being damaged in just days were most likely due to some very bad manufacturing/part defect, not due to a design limitation.
There are several people that reported burn in and even the people who say that it is only faulty devices dont dare to use the screen on max brightness + AOD...
I would not risk it!

AOD is probably safe if the tap on feature is available.
Direct sunlight and AMOLED displays are a very bad combination. I would wear it on the underside of the wrist or covered by a sleeve when in the sun.
It's got some cool features but when out and about especially working out, the electronics go dark. They are a distraction that can only cause harm.
In the real world life altering updates happen in a split second*. No second chances.
Many "kids" don't understand this; they will learn or burn.
*Multitasking is a myth in most cases. Only people at an expert level are capable of this, with certain tasks/situations and only after many months or years of training and practice.
It becomes a hardwired skill only then.
Don't delude yourself... you may only get one chance to react appropriately in a fraction of a second. Not easy to do even in ideal conditions.
Relax your guard only in low threat level environments.
Okay. Thanks everyone. I think better to be careful
