question about charger

Hi guys,
I want to buy a extra charger for my 6P at work. I am wondering what specs should I be looking for for the quick charging capability? The google store has one that is 15W and another one that is higher. I don't know which one to choose, also, I want to see if I can buy any 3rd party one from Amazon that can give me quick charging.

I would stick with the one sold by Google until 3rd parties make one similarly specced. 5v / 3a / 15ww, USB type C plug.

I think everyone has the same questions regarding chargers and cables. It's probably best to try and get by with what's in the box for a bit, I'm sure affordable choices will soon be available.

There are 2 options now from Google, but I wouldn't call them cheap. I bought the $40 dual port charger for my bag because it seems nice, and if it sucks I can easily send it back.

On one review video it had "faster charging" at the bottom of the screen when the native usb-c was being used.

Unless it supports 3A at 5V then probably not. any QC 2.0 charger will only output 2.0A at most for 5V so that's not fast charging.

I don't think he understood the question? I would wait for a clearer answer

Won't it work with any Qualcomm QC 2.0 power adapter (outputting 5, 9 and 12V) and with a suitable USB-C lead? I am hoping that will be the case anyway, as I've got two QC 2.0 adapters for home and 1 car charger adapter. Should keep me covered, and all I'll need to do is buy new USB-C cables.

He answered it below... That was with a QC2.0 charger giving him "2A" input according to Android OS.
Basically the phone shows "faster charging" when anything higher amperage gets used, not just native usb-c. The speed it charges is obviously not the same, but at least it utilizes a higher rate.

I didn't see the 2A part just the fast charging. That's better than nothing but still not technically fast charging

Assuming 15W is considered Fast Charging, then Type C has nothing to do with it. Current QC 2.0 chargers pump 18W via Type A to Micro B cables.
It is the limited design of the 6P that requires a Type C end to end solution (or captive charger) to permit fast charging. A little more thoughtful design choices would have allowed 18W via a Type A to Type C cable in the same way as the QC chargers operate by over charging a stupid cable or by respecting USB Power Delivery at 12V/1.5A in a smart cable solution.

It can't go over 5V we have been over this before... So yes the Type-C doesn't affect the charging but the pin layout and chip only supports 5V from what has been seen so far.

I concur, but it is important to dispel the marketing nonsense that Type C some how represents a "Fast Charging" solution. It is a connector and would have supported much better "Fast Charging" solutions than a steady state 5V solution. It will perform very well from 0% charge, but will lag higher voltage solutions at the other end of the charging cycle.

Sorry, this is not true. The higher voltage of the power delivery has no effect on charging speed given the same total power. This is especially true at the top end of the battery SOC where the charge rate is limited by the battery chemistry.

USB Type-C Wall Charger?

I have been looking everywhere, but cannot find a type-c wall charger. I really want to get another 2, one for work, and one for another room in my house. Has anyone found one somewhere else other than the Google store?

I just went to Amazon and searched for "type C wall charger" and saw some. Here's the first item in the search.

Why? It is unclear if the original poster desired a captive Type C, Type C to Type C, or Type A to Type C charger. All 3 would work.
The problem with this charger is that 18W is for Quick Charge which is 9V/2A or 12V/1.5A. This charger most likely won't ever output more than 2.4A at 5V. Not that that is hateful, just not 3A.

Do you specifically want a charger with a Type C port in it? Or would a 5V/3A Type A to Type C or Captive Type C charger be OK?
I think you are going to find that we are really early in the Type C adoption and there just aren't many small/handheld devices using Type C yet, so there aren't many accessories. The other is issue is 5V/3A is unlikely to be exceptionally prevalent even when Type C ramps up, but I could be wrong. I just think most vendors will use some form of voltage hopping quick charging technology, especially since QC 3.0 is built into the Qualcom SOCs where the Snapdragon 810 and below that use QC 2.0 require an additional chip. Not sure what the Lumia 950XL or Sony X5 (?) is using.

BZZZT. Try again, neither of those chargers are the right setup. The first one will only do 2.1A not 3A. The second does not have a Type C port it has a Type A and comes with a Type A>C cable which means you'll get about 1.5A maximum from it on a 5X or 6P.
To get 3 amp charging you need two things. A. The charger port MUST be a Type-C port. B. The charger must be rated for [email protected]

Google is best answer... for now.
None of the currently available chargers on the market can provide the 3W and intelligence needed to quick charge usb type c I've found so far. My solution, though not the cheapest, was to order the two port 22.5W google usb type c charger. It came quickly and it works great I can confirm. If you read the spec on type c charging it not only can do 3A @ 5V but also other amounts at different voltages I think... even 12V in some cases. I'm not sure if the 6P will use all of the options but USB type C is whole new animal when it comes to charging fast.

BZZZTZTTT! Try again. Neither the title of the thread or the OP ask for a 3A wall charger, just a type C charger. I saw the one I posted was 2.1A, but he didn't ask for a 3A one, just type C.

Agreed, that's the one I bought and received a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm looking for Type-C to Type-C at 3amp/5v, which I believe is the fastest?
I have heard Anker will be releasing their Type-C range within the next week on Amazon, so hopefully soon we should have some more accessories soon!
At the moment I have resorted to using my RAVPower portable charger with Type-C connection for when I don't have my mains charger on me. Although this is quite a nuisance...

When i tested my Nexus 5p with choetech type c charger, 1.5 hours from 0 to 100%, almost same as 3 amps LG C-C charger, the charging speed dance from 2.6 amps to 0.5 amps regularly before 30%, then stable at about 1.8 amps, it's not a fast charging phone according to my test, would be glad to know if anyone could share the charging experience with Nexus 6p.

My experience with the N6p on the stock charger is that while it will briefly bounce up to 2.8, it doesn't ramp up smoothly. It pretty much does a roller coaster like you described almost the whole time probably averaging around 1 to 1.5 amps. I also tried with my anker 2.4 amp and it didn't seem to be that much less. Very disappointing actually.

I used a 5V/3A charger with captive microusb (for raspberrypi). With a micro to c adapter, it charged my 6P at ~2.7A (less than 40% battery). The charger and adapter were less than $15 total.
I've also used a multi-port charger with a quality A-C cable and get ~2.4A charging.

I've got the Cheeotech one somewhere. I was one of the few they picked last year to test it out with the N6. That Amazon page is just their QC2.0 charger with a USB C to A cable. I will try to find mine and see how it charges.

The battery and temperature control is the limitation of the charging speed, google could use a 5v 2a charger to get this job done, 5v 3a is actually not quicker for Nexus 5p, google is making jokes with us.

[Review 11/22] Ravpower 20100mah Type-C/QC2.0 External Battery Pack

Ravpower 20100mah Type-C & QC 2.0 Battery Pack
Overview: The Ravpower battery pack is supposedly the first USB Type-C battery pack out there. It charges the 6P using the USB Type-C standard of 5V/3A which is great because it’s the first true Type-C charger and battery out there not made by Google from what I have seen. I will compare the battery to the other ones I own which are just the regular QC2.0 standard and made by Aukey.
Ports/Charging:
The Ravpower features 4 total ports, now before you get carried away with the infinite possibilities of this I will first talk about what they offer.
Ports Comparison
Input Charging Ports:
There are 2 ports that can be used to charge the battery. The first is the conventional Micro-USB port. This port will allow you to have the battery with up to 24W, and is a good backup if you don’t want to charge it via USB Type-C. The next way the battery can be charged is via USB Type-C at 5V/3A (15W) which is slower than using a QC2.0 24W+ charger. I know there aren’t many 24W capable QC2.0 chargers but I have a 30W one made by Power Partners and it charges the battery a lot faster than my Type-C cable does.
Here is breakdown of the voltages/rates the battery can be charged at:
Output Charging Ports:
Type-C
The battery can charge up to 3 devices at once with its 3 output charging ports. The first and most relevant of these would be the USB Type-C port. It will charge the Nexus 6P/5X rapidly just as the wall charger would. I’ve had the battery for about 3 days now and it has been great! The USB Type-C port is reversible in terms of charging for this battery pack. The port can take 5V/3A and output the same 5V/3A to a phone so it cuts down on how many ports the battery needs.
USB Type-A QC2.0
This port features Qualcomm’s quick charge 2.0 standard and will quick charge any compatible devices at one of 3 voltages. The port can also charge the Nexus 6P/5X using a in spec Type-A to Type-C cable as you might expect. I have the iOrange cable and it will give me 1.5A as it should by the USB standard. I like the availability of a Type-A port because I can charge other devices from it while on the go.
USB Type-A iSmart Port
This is your standard 5V 2.4A USB Type-A port. There is nothing special about it in my opinion and they could have left this one out since the QC2.0 port also supports 5V/2.4A. It’s still there if you wanted to use it so I will leave it at that.

Design/Build Quality:
The design of the battery is nothing special, it’s a simple rectangle just like it should be. There is no reason to over design the appearance of an external battery as long as it gets the job done. I don’t mean this in a bad way at all because I like the simple design of it. There are 4 blue LED dots that indicate the battery level and they aren’t overly bright if you use it at night. There is a small button under the LED lights to turn the battery pack on or see its current battery level.
Let me get this out of the way: the battery is HUGE and might as well be a brick making up some old building in Philadelphia. With that being said the battery is solid but not too heavy overall. The battery is made with a plastic construction, but Ravpower does offer a 12 month warranty on it. I didn’t look to see what it covered, but I assume it should cover the standard defects but likely not physical damage. According to Ravpower these are the dimensions of the battery pack:

What’s in the Box:
The battery comes with a mesh pouch to put it in while you are traveling about, but it has no extra pockets for anything else. There are also 2 micro USB cables included with the battery that can be used to charge the battery or a compatible phone. The flat style cables are nice and should be tangle free. I used one to charge my Bose QC20 (2015) headphones and didn’t have any issues. I would test them on another device, but I no longer have micro USB phones/tablets.

I’m enjoying the battery pack a lot and I think it’s worth the price right now. $47.99 isn’t bad for a 20100mah battery considering I have 2 Aukey ones (12500mah, 10400mah QC2.0 battery packs). The battery is big, but it has more than enough capacity to keep your phone/tablet alive for a few days at a minimum.

You cna use the C-C cable that comes with your phone to rapid charge your phone. Any USB A-C cables are limited to 1.5A by design so it won't rapid charge with a Type A that is inspec. Out of spec ones might but its not worth the risk

Right, I just meant that if I wanted to keep this in my work bag or in my car, I would need another C to C cable, because the one that came with my phone would stay at home with the charger. Thanks for the review, I added it to my Amazon Wish List.

Yes you need a C-C cable to rapid charge at the 5V/3A but you can charge slower with a Type-A to Type-C which will give you 5V/1.5A. The monoprice C-C USB 2.0 cable is inspec according to Benson so I would get that one. It's ~$13 I believe.

I have this same charger. 70% off my town has been with out power for the past 3 days (including my house) and this thing saved me a few times already. I can fully charge my phone almost 6 times on 1 charge. It may be big but it charges fast and many times. I dig it

I haven't tried but it might work. I know most batteries support I/O at the same time.
I will add the rest of the pictures tomorrow. Its been a very busy day so I haven't had a chance to take the other pictures

I've used it to charge my phone for the past 3 days just to test it. If has 2 dots left (~50% or less) which is good. The battery may but be metal or asthetically great but it gets the job done

The Pixel/Pixel XL now properly support USB PD over both 5V and now 9V as you can see by the included charger with both phones. Last year’s Nexus 5X/6P only supported 5V/3A i.e. 15W, but this year Google bumped it up to 18W which in theory will give you more efficient charging at a faster rate due to the reduction of heat at higher voltages.
Choetech made a USB-C PD charger that supports a broad range of USB-C compatible devices, none of which I own aside from the Pixel XL since the Nexus 6P seems to be picky about what fast charges it and what doesn’t.

The charger has more of a dual tone/texture with a smoother plastic on the bottom rim, and a textured one everywhere else. One thing that is hard to miss is the physical size of this charger; it dwarfs Google’s stock one, and even some other multiport chargers. This could be due to the tech required for a 29W charger, although I’m not exactly sure why it’s so large with only a single USB-C Port.
On the front you will of course find the USB-C port, and above it a subtle blue charging LED. As we turn to the back there is a handy fold away 2-prong wall plug that should be convenient if you travel a lot.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a way to really test the voltages like I did for previous phones because the USB-C PD spec makes it difficult. I know there is a way to check the voltages via a USB-PD power sniffer, yet I wasn’t about to spend ~$300+ on something that I wouldn’t use that often.

Overall this charger works as it should, and despite its large size it would still be great for travel/bringing to work due to the folding plug in the back.
Choetech USB A-C Braided Cable 3-Pack
Last year we had to deal with non-compliant USB A-C cables everywhere in addition to a wider adoption of the USB-C spec for phones. Now, the majority of companies are on board, and meeting the USB spec thanks to Benson Leung.
I purchased a figurative ton of cables last year in an attempt to replace my then irrelevant Micro USB cables. I spent a good amount of money and time finding quality cables which at the time were very expensive. Choetech sent me a 3 pack of braided USB A-C cables that are nearly identical in quality to the i-Orange ones I paid $12-18 for each last year, yet now you can get a 3 pack for the price of just one cable.
Braided cables looks better, are generally more durable/expensive than your traditional USB-C cable. The ones I was sent feature a metal housing that feels solid, and looks great. I tested all 3 cables with a multimeter to ensure they were allowing the proper current to be pulled i.e. they have a 56K ohm-m resistor which is what Benson Leung checks for.
Choetech USB-C (2.0) Cable 2 Pack
If you want to rapidly charge (fast charge/quick charge) your Pixel/Pixel XL, then you need to use a USB C-C cable. This 2-pack contains both a 2[m], and 1[m] USB C-C cable that both allow your Pixel to quick charge on both the stock charger, and 29W one that Choetech also offers. I verified that rapid charging shows up on my phone no matter which cable I use (Choetech, or OEM Google) as they should. The only downside I can find is these only support USB 2.0 data transfer speeds not 3.0 which is fine because most people don’t have a USB-C port on their laptop/PC. These cables aren’t braided like the USB A-C ones, but they still feel nice. I’ve actually owned a number of these dating back to the early days of my Nexus 6P, and they have held up well over time. None of my cables have frayed, broken, or otherwise had issues over the past year. These cables are premium in the sense that they will last a long time despite not looking as nice as some other offerings. I keep one of these and a variety of cables, chargers, and adapters with me in my work bag just in case I might need one during the day, or when I’m out in the field.
Choetech USB C-A Adapter
USB C-A adapters aren’t the most common things you might need, yet they’re still very useful if you need to plug a flash drive into your phone, or another peripheral.
Choetech sells a small 3-Pack of these adapters which come in gold, blue, and black. Personally I prefer a more subtle color like black, although having a choice between colors can be refreshing. Each adapter is made in such a way that it should work with most cases. I was able to use it on my Nexus 6P with a Spigen Rugged Armor case, but it wouldn’t fit in my Pixel XL’s Speck Presidio (YMMV).
Both of my phones were able to instantly recognize any flash drive I plugged into them via these adapters unlike some of the earlier ones (I own one that’s very picky) that were very inconsistent. I then decided to test one of these USB C-A adapters on my desktop since my motherboard has a USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C port. I was able to plug my flash drive into the adapter, and use it without any problems (see pictures below).
Overall these adapters are more of a convenience than a necessity for most people, but it’s always good to be prepared. If you do get one, Choetech makes a strong case with their nice metal compact package.

I find that hard to believe for a variety of reasons. First you're using an A-C cable which limits you to 1.5A charging i.e. 7.5WSecondly the included pixel charged will outputs 18W in phases so it will push 9V/2Aor 5V/3A depending in what the phone is requesting from it via PD.
I have a Motorola Turbo charger so I can easily prove my point with really data if need be.

I doubt this as well. Unless you have real data, I wouldn't be making these claims. Simply seeing "charging rapidly" is NOT indicative of ANYTHING. I have gotten this message to occur falsely before with chargers.

I got this 29W PD charger and charged my Pixel XL rapidly. I hope I can get a USB C amperemeter to get some real data.

Any recommendations on a car charger that will fast charge the pixel as well as the 6p

Just got THIS and it works wonderfully.
Also bought the 1 usb-c + 2 usb a version of the Choetech charger above (kobo, watch, phone) and it, too, works perfectly.

Get a USB Doctor or USB Ampere Sleeve, they are kinda cheap and work well. Let us know how well it works and if you can compare it to the stock one would be awesome. The Review doesn't say much about how well it works..
Edit; they only cost ~$5 and work great, the oled gives the best readout

I just ordered a Turbo 30 off Verizon site, it's 50% off, it's USB C and says it is Power Delivery compliant. For only $20, it's worth a try.

Extra Chargers?

Has anyone found any cheap chargers that can charge this phone like the Essential charger does (really fast)? I have bought two different chargers and neither of them can really even charge the phone. The lock screen says it's charging slowly, and the battery meter acts like it's charging, but it doesn't actually charge. The chargers were both Quick Charge 3.0 chargers too. None of my old phone chargers with a type-c adapter will charge the phone either.

Have you tried different cables?
Every charger I own will charge this phone. My Samsung, pixel, Motorola, etc usb type-c chargers will all work.

Thanks! Now, what about if I wanted it to just charge normally (not rapidly or slowly) for if if I wanted to leave it charging overnight? Don't think I need to spend the extra money on rapid chargers for that scenario...

No idea. Honestly, I don't know of anyone who consciously needs to control the speed of their charge. I avoid charging overnight by rapid charging during the day at work.

does it really need PD? they are kind of expensive and there are chargers out there with 5V, 6V, 9V, 12V @ 3A

I'm not sure how Android is programmed to display "Rapidly Charging", but I'm sure it's not by charging standard. Probably based on supplied power, but it definitely doesn't charge as fast as the stock charger. I noticed this with my QC chargers. It will say rapidly charging for a couple minutes and then just not charge at all or say charging slowly. Frustrating as hell so I bought an extra USB PD charger.

My Samsung chargers all work, and charge the phone to 100%. They just say charging, not quick charging, but whatever... The % goes up.

Try using the Ampere app on the Play store. It will show you what amounts of current etc is being used to charge the phone..

Yeah...it doesn't. I'm such a tool I assumed it did and bought two Ankar QC3 wall chargers and a Tronsmart QC3 car charger. None of them are able to charge the phone at all, says that it's charging slowly but doesn't seem as though it's charging at all.

Phone needs a charger with USB-C Power Delivery and not QC. Anker has at least one model and Incipio has one as well. There are many others on Amazon.. The cool thing about those is that they also change my XPS-13. Only carry one charger when I travel.

I've got a few QC 2/3 chargers and a few USB-C PD chargers and what I've found is that depending on which USB-C to USB-A makes a difference whether I get rapid charge or not.
I'm slowly converting over to USB-C to USB-C but it is stupid expensive for some things like the power packs with USB-C...
Anyway, try a few different cables and see if it works for you, also it seems to work a tiny bit better on the Oreo Beta however my QC 2.0 car charger doesn't charge as fast as it did on 7.1.1 but luckily the car chargers are the cheapest USB-C PD items to buy, roughly about the same price as a cable.
One last note, the same charger and cable don't always go into rapid charging mode so replugging the cable in sometime kicks in rapid mode for me.
