Asus ROG Phone likely to remain on Oreo - Asus ROG Phone Guides, News, & Discussion

Article
Asus launched an Android Pie beta program for the Zenfone 4 flagship back in the summer. Several months later an employee with the Taiwanese company said there is no plan for the Pie update, and today a report from China confirmed once again the worries - the Asus Zenfone 4 will remain on Oreo.
Meanwhile the first ROG Phone is also stuck on the two-year-old OS. Upon further review, it appears that the gaming handset will indeed miss on the Pie as well.
The Asus Zenfone 4 was initially launched at MWC 2017 with Android Nougat 7.1, but later received Android Oreo. Then the devices with model numbers ZE554KL were open for an Android Pie beta testing, but that’s pretty much it for big software updates. Plenty of comments in the company forum voiced their concerns with the lack of updates, but a moderator assured that at least the security updates will keep coming for at least two years.
Interestingly enough, a lot of Asus users are complaining from the beta version as well - it is way too buggy and gets less stable with every next day. Comments on the ZenTalk forum reveal that there is no easy way to get back to a stable version of the OS - all you have left is a total wipeout of the device, which isn’t something that everyone wants to do to their phone.

But that's about rog phone, not rog phone 2? Confused.

First of all this news is about the rog phone 1, and second, every single phone in the market has some tradeoffs, i'd prefer it be softwarewise than hardware, good luck with whatever potato phone you might buy..

PIE 9 is finally here, please update

I hate them so Much for this **** with the Rog 1. I think I dont Buy anything from Asus in the Future again.

OnePlus 3/3T will get Android P, your move Huawei

Like title says, OP 3/3T (July and November 2016) will get Android P:
The Android P update will be available on the OnePlus 6, OnePlus 5/T and OnePlus 3/3T, in this order. We will keep you all updated in the coming months.
I don't believe Huawei would bring Android P for P9, but I would be amazed if Huawei brings Android P for P9 (released April 2016).
TL;DR OnePlus 3/3T (2016) will get Android P. What about P9 (2016 too)?

Highly Doubt Huawei will do that. Especially given the number of device they release per year. They don't have the time to develop for older phones. Best example is this Oreo update, its become almost an year and still we haven't got Oreo globally. I even doubt Kirin 95X devices will even get the GPU turbo update.
Don't expect too much with this brand even if they manufacture their own SoC.

I was thinking the same like you. Well, P9 was great but they updates their phones too slowly or not at all. Time to move to another brand, for example OP or Nokia

Same here next phone would probably be out of OP/NOKIA. P9 is a great device but it's software support is quite dissappointing.
Most pointless topic i red in a long time.
Topic for people who actually dont use phone at all, they just spend time staring at phone info tab and browsing other phones topic to see with one get update sooner...
Such people expect some miracles from updates, like they give them new battery, new camera, bring 10000% performances...
Seriously what is wrong with P9 now? its work perfectly for 2 years old device. From the beginning it was not fastest device so even at the premiere it was slower than competition, but it makes up in different categories: look, camera and stability. And that what it give. I didnt reset my phone for 42 days now, it work all the time with most of features turned on.
What you could expect more from device of that type? Its not powerhouse device, and it never was, it was fancy phone with nice camera. The End.
We getting constant security patches so paranoid people can feel secure, all apps work without a problem...
Orea will not change anything beside bigger number in phone info tab and some new features that most of you will turn off after week anyway....
You wanted phone that you could tinker with? Get that OnePlus 3/3T.... What is stopping you?

You're absolutely right.:good:
What is this for a Thread and a absolutly Confused Question on Startpost. Android P for P9 to compare with One Plus 3T. It is very Logical for me that One Plus 3T became P that P9 Oreo. Dreamer
Probably he's one of those who still think that people from Huawei run this forum (or at least visit this). A bit bummed that we won't be getting Oreo, but hey just like what they said, it's pretty good for a phone released years ago.

Asus and Zenfone 6 commitment to future Android versions

I've read online that the Zenfone 6 will get Android Q and R. Can anyone point me at anything official from Asus to verify this?

Watch the announcement event on YouTube. Should be in there. However it's not uncommon for promises of updates to be broken. Just saying since you seem to be looking for some kind of official confirmation instead of all the media coverage relaying what Asus has said on the matter.

Quoting this for emphasis. Manufacturers have been lying about updates for years.
Any manufacturers promise of long-term support needs to be taken with a tablespoon of salt. They make money selling phones.....they get squat for pushing updates to those phones....In a while they'll get bankrupt unless they sell more. Simple market dynamics 101.
Quite frankly...I believe that the version of Android that was built into the phone is usually the best. Maybe not the best version of Android per-se...but the best for the hardware. So many times I read about people who beg for a new version for their phones only to complain later that the update sucks, and is full of bugs. So I can appreciate if they push Q but as for R...welllllll, that may be just a little too much.

That's very true for fat custom skins which deeply changes stock Android look and feel as well as adds new features. Like Samsung' former TouchWiz.
OT: I am using for nearly two years Xiaomi Mi A1 with Android One. It started with Android Nougat 7.1.2, then we were updated to Oreo 8.0, 8.1 and for half an year we have Pie 9. With every Android major version and with every monthly security update the phone is better and better, they steadily eliminate bugs and even add new features which were missing at start (like FM radio app, VoLTE support, etc). I am very happy with it. But despite this there are always users who are not satisfied for example because they have not done their homework about Mi A1 and they say that slim stock Android is worse for them than fat MIUI.

Nokia 8.1;Android One, starts receiveing Android 10, good news for A2 Lite ?

"HMD Global has announced the rollout of Android 10 for the Nokia 8.1, making it the first Nokia smartphone to get a stable build of the latest version of Android."
https://m.gsmarena.com/nokia_8_1_android_10_update-news-39549.php
Is this good news for any Android One phone, or Android One project, or is it a matter of manufacturers that build the phones, maybe this could have good effect on development of Android 10 for A2 Lite ?
Nokia always gave timely updates to their devices, this matter doesn't really have any effect on other androidone devices. Nokia also adds other features to their phones (they're all androidone afaik), like round ui, pixel blue accent color and cam2api. As far as updates go, xiaomi isn't that good with their androidone phones, so don't get your hopes up and get frustrated afterwards. I would love to have Android 10 soon but, I know it's not gonna happen. Cheers.
its strictly related to nokia, this. the fact that they will push it sooner then xiaomi means nothing to us. it all depends on Xiaomi when they will start working for it, and when will they release... nokia is known for being faster to update then xiaomi thats for sure. so just sit and wait
...or, you could install unofficial android 10, there is a good GSI version here on xda which works fairly well.

My brother is using a Nokia 7 plus and I had Android 9 weeks before him and even with security updates Nokia isn't faster all the time compared to Xiaomi.
I've never managed to get any kind of custom rom working through TWRP because of the kinstalldeviceopenerror.

Okay let me ask this, do you consider the Pie update we got as stable? Because I still think that we never got a stable build of Pie from Xiaomi. I can't even update to September update because it breaks the digitizer for me and I can't even use the screen properly. I have no idea how stable is Nokia's version of Pie but maybe you can enlighten us about that.

In my eyes our Android Pie is very stable. I never had to reboot my device due to system instability bugs. The worst one I ever had was the screen rotate flash bug. My battery backup after one year of usage is still superb, usually I get 7 hours of screentime within 5-6 days of usage. Most reported bugs appear to be on devices which had installed custom firmware and messed up vendor partitions.
The only thing I dislike on this device is the low headphone sound volume while using a European Union display language. I'm just using U.S. English to fix that.
I don't know about bugs in Nokia phones, my brother never told me about anything special and I can't check his phone because he's in England and I'm in Germany.

My guess is Mi A2 Lite will get Android 10 in late december.

EMUI 10.0 for P20 Pro CLT-L29

Hi there, I am looking for a way to force update android 10 to my P20 Pro, Its the CLT-L29 version currently with build number 9.1.0.383 and I bought it in Pakistan, updates here seems to take quite a while as compared to other places. Also, I am facing some issues with Bluetooth connection with my car speakers. Hopefully, the update might solve my problem. Would be grateful for any help
There is no update for emui 10 CLT-L29 ATM online. Version on firmware finder is only available for india region
The EMUI 10 (Android 10) beta program got closed some months ago. So we have to wait for the official rollout in march/april.
I'm part of the beta-program and already using Android 10 (10.0.0.145 C432). I can confirm that all Bluetooth issues I had before are gone. Especially with car Bluetooth (there was a lot of stuttering with Android 8 and 9).
My second Phone honor 20 lite get the New update (Android 10/emui 10) and the flagship is waiting........
No more Huawei for me unfortunately. While it is a good phone, updates are not existent. Android 11 is coming out next month and we're still on 9. LOL.

I am the same opinion!
Besides, Huawei leaves out P20 series from 10.1 update.
Absolutely my next phone one+ 8 pro
F*ck huawei, you killed my p20 pro!
its bad phone ever ! never buy again !
I really love my P20 Pro, but the Updates... I remember to go to 9 with the modded hisuite because my phone did not get the update.
Without the Google Services its anyway not useful for my to stay with huawai, but because of the bad updates and support my next phone will not be a Huawai.
And i will look for a phone with updates min 3-4 years, is there a phone with that support?

That is not exactly true.
PIXEL phones are updated for 3 years. That is according to Google's support page.
Following that, your only option is get a popular unlockable phone and install Lineage OS. This gives you longer support.
Your options here are basically Motorola or OnePlus.
Huawei likely would have survived its anti-consumer change in bootloader unlocking stance and slow software rollout alone. However, coupled with Trumps war on Huawei, I expect them to pull a HTC and drop down to irrelevancy within a couple years.
I bought a P20 Pro because I had owned the Nexus 6P, which was the best smart phone I have ever owned. Had I not dropped it into water after after cracking the screen, I would still use it since it is far more usable that the EMUI infected P20.
I cannot imagine any situation where I would buy another Huawei product after this phone.
It is a pity. They may lovely hardware. EMUI is simply this ****tiest software to ever been placed on a phone. I would say even original touchwiz was less annoying.

At least Apple actually updates their software for several years. Unlikely ****ty Huawei or Samsung.
Spend a thousand bucks and get two years max of support. Or spend 1k with apple and get 5.
Seems like a better deal to spend 1k every 5 years than 1k every 2.
Of course, no one would actually spend that much on a Huawei so the carriers need to massively slash the price.

In fact spend 400 on the SE 2 and get 5 years of updates. I'm seriously considering it as my next phone, I know people bash the looks of it but I loved my 6s and genuinely don't have an issue with it.
I do like my P20 Pro but the lack of updates (even security ones are slow) is just pathetic. I'd go for OnePlus but even they're expensive these days.

Updates

How long will it get updates? And wich versions - Just the normal 2 years (Android 11 and 12)?
Is Asus slow or fast for the security patches?
Thank you.
ASUS has been awful regarding updates. People complained an awful lot regarding their ROG and Zenfone 6 updates. You can just check the ASUS forums. It paints a grim picture.
This is why I hesitate so much. So much money and no support. Kind of a hard purchase.

This is quite inspiring!
Even if Asus was quite quick with android 10 and started beta for 11... Zenfone 6 won't have android 12. And, zenfone 7, will just have 1 full year of support (android 11 already available frome google).
when samsung, Oneplus et even Poco announce 3 years of support, it's quite sad from asus.
September security patch showed up on the Zenfone 6 this morning.
I'm really looking forward to picking up the 7 Pro myself, and from everything I've seen on here and on Reddit, it seems like Asus has been really good with the updates on the ZF6 so far. Also don't see it mentioned anywhere that there will only be 1 year of supported updates.
Given their lightweight skin and fast updates, I think the support should be decent.
It should be ok as the ZF6 had Android 9 out of the box, got Android 10 at the end of last year & has 11 coming at some stage either at the end of the year or early next year. I doubt it will get 12 tbh but you never know.

It will only have 1 year, you'll see. 2 major updates.
Android 11 already out, but zenfone 7 come with 10, so 11 et 12 = 2 major updates but 1 year.
The update is not slow, however the update barely give you any new features except security updates. That means the features you have in the beginning is what you have in the end.
So far so good. They've released a few incremental updates fixing things which is inspiring. Hopefully they keep up with that.
