Carrier Version Bootloader Locked Workaround for Custom ROMs? - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

Could you in theory install a custom ROM by rooting the Pixel 3a with King(o) Root then flash recovery via TWRP app or Flashify the img. To then install a custom ROM that from TWRP from there?
I have Sprint version but I'm just wondering in general

That kingo stuff doesn't work. It's a scam if you ask me. And you need to request your carrier to unlock your sim before anything. Then you can proceed to unlock bootloader and whatnot.

Even if there was a way that wasn't a total scam to get root on your verizon locked device, TWRP is broken on any Pixel 3a running Android 10 due to partitioning design changes breaking it. So even if you had TWRP installed, you couldn't actually use it.
The only way to install custom ROMs for now is to flash via fastboot.

Do I need to unlock bootloader for TWRP?

Hello,
I'm trying to install TWRP on my wife's TFT300T. Its lagging and freezing bloat apps hasn't helped. It's rooted stock 4.2 with a locked boot.
I rooted it with motochopper, and tried installing the latest 4.2 (2.6) with the terminal method and it didn't seem to work. I get an error when trying to access the recovery menu. I tried using adb/sdk, but I don't see the usb option fro fastboot.
I have the latest unlock tool from asus, but I want to be sure I need to unlock the bootloader. I have everything backed up with titanium, but I'd like to get a recovery of the stock too if possible.
If someone could confirm I need to unlock the bootloader that'd be great. It hasn't specially said that I need to unlock the bootloader in any of the 5 or 6 topics I've read. Thanks!

To my knowledge and for a bit of backround the reason the tf300t needs to be unlocked to install twrp is any kernel package you flash needs to be cryptographically signed, the key for this has not and wont be released by Asus, meaning if you try flash twrp without being unlocked, the bootloader looks for a signature on said package but doesn't find one so its not accepted, unlocking the bootloader disables these checks so we can flash what we want.
Short answer
Yes you need to have an unlocked bootloader to flash unsigned kernels

Is the bootloader of OnePlus X E1003's bootloader unlockable? HELP PLS!!!

Hello!
I want to unlock my bootloader and root my phone to flash a custom ROM. I have many questions regarding this:
1. http://www.howtogeek.com/239798/how-to-unlock-your-android-phones-bootloader-the-official-way/ This link has instructions to unlock bootloader the official way. It is written there that bootloader of some specific models of some phones might not be unlockable, and it told me to check on XDA developers. So is OnePlus X E1003 Onyx's bootloader unlockable? If not, it is written that I will need to use the unofficial method given at XDA developers.
2. After unlocking my bootloader using ADB, fastboot and all that, do I need to flash a custom recovery like TWRP, CloCkworks mod, etc. ? If yes, pls tell me where to find it and how to flash it!!
3. Do I neet to root my device before flashing a custom ROM? Also, how to root my device manually using adb? Should I use apps like Kingroot for rooting my phone. If yes, pls suggest apps other than kingroot! and also tell me how to root manually using zipped files!
4. What is the safest and ideal way to flash a custom ROM? As OnePlus X hasn't yet received Marshmellow update, is it advisable to flash CM13? Is there any OxygenOS v 3.3 Rom for Oneplus x?? pls helP!!

Root 170708 ?

I'm using Magisk (latest version). The easiest and convenient way to root your phone though, you still need to use a custom recovery (TWRP) to root using Magisk and indirectly, your bootloader still needs to be unlocked (if you haven't manage to flash a custom recovery on your phone yet).
Are you using a custom recovery (TWRP) for your phone right now @Tanvir/?

Anyone Willing to Help a Newbie Pixel User.

Hello guys is there anyone willing to help me out?
Im long term HTC user in the past 15 Plus years i was flshing whatever i want and im familiar with this but i switched to Pixel 2 and i want to clear for myself few things prior before to brick it.
I also read this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/how-to/guide-unlock-flash-root-pixel-2-walleye-t3702417
But its seems like the thread is not updated and some users mention problems with flashing Magisk etc.
Im fully Stock locked bootloader with the latest Android Pie from 5 January 2018
The Pixel i use is Google Edition worlwide version not loocked to any network etc.
The main reason to want to Bootloader unlock it is because i need the Magisk in order to be able to flash and use few of the must have for me apps that i use all the time.
1st is SAURON audio - without Magisk and TWRP this is not posible.
2nnd few additional Magisk modules that i use non stop in the past few years.
What is not clear for me is the steps and exactly the second steb with Flashing Flashing factory images?!
In HTC i need to get the bootloader unlock S-OFF is i want and flash a TWRP in this case i can flash on top Magisk so here is different and not very clear for me as well.
When im now on the latest Android version from 5 January do i need still to flash FACTORY IMAGE after unlocking the bootloader?
Is anyone willing to help to clear the things out before to mess the device.
Thanks in advance

Hi If you just want to unlock bootloader, there is no reason to flash factory image again. Just allow unlock bootloader in developer options, reboot to bootloader and run fastboot flashing unlock, this will fully wipe/factory reset your device.
Now you could boot/flash TWRP and install magisk.
When will be new monthly update available, flash it with help of this thread:
Code:

Good luck :good:

Thank you for the info.
So this mean i dont need to flash Image if im with the latest stock Version.
I prefer to stay stock just miss some Magisk modules thats why i wondering what to do.
Can i flash just a Kernel for example KiriSakura after unlock the bootloader and install TWRP just to flash Kiri Kernel with the stock rom im now and other Magisk stuffs like Sauron etc.
Thanks again
Hi exactly, if you run latest stock you havn't flash it again after bootloader unlock.
If you want to petmanently flash twrp, you have to do it before flashing magisk, othetwise you willn't be able to boot os only twrp.

What would happen if you install Magisk without unlocked bootloader

I have installed Lineage OS (Android 10) on my phone and TWRP through download mode and ODIN. The instructions I followed had no mention of unlocking the bootloader but it worked. I did not check the bootloader prior to the process nor did I find anything in the settings menu indicating anything about the bootloader. I therefore assume my bootloader is almost certainly unlocked but in the interest of being 100% certain that I will not brick my phone, I would just like to confirm with some more experienced members of the community if this is indeed true. Can I attempt to flash magisk using TWRP? If my phone has a locked bootloader and I attempt to install Magisk, is there any hope of recovery or would my phone be completely unusable? Thank you.

Which device?
Samsung didn't need an bootloader unlock until i think Galaxy S5.
Also since you already successfully flashed TWRP and lineage, i assume flashing Magisk won't make any difference
S6 Edge (G925F). I flashed Magisk and it worked. I asked on Reddit as well so a guy told me I wouldn't be able to boot a custom ROM or TWRP if my bootloader was locked so it should be okay. Thanks.
The same here I have Samsung galaxy tab a6 and I flashed twrp using Odin successfuly
and install lineage custom ROM without unlocking boot loader and I install supersu and it worked perfectly but l wented to use magisk and for that l fully unrooted SuperSU and flash latest magisk but the problem is here after flashed magisk successfuly rebooted and magisk app icon is not showing up on homescreen I install it manuly from file manager the app icon uninstalled it self again a don't now what I have to do
