USB Cables info. - Google Pixel 4 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Going to post this in a few places that are getting traction at the moment. I just boned up my 4xl and needed to flash the factory image over top, sans the -w and imagine my surprise to discover it failed when using the supplied usb-c to usb-c cord. Seems this phone shares the same buggy nonsense as the 2xl does. I changed out the cord for my trusty A-to-C I always use and Bam! Back in business!!
The fastboot failed right after flashing the boot and phone rebooted to the dead Android screen.
SO... Let's start this phone off right from the start by NOT using the C-to-C cord. Sadly I'm sure we'll be answering posts weekly aftering this but hey this is my part...

You serious? The charger that comes with the phone doesn't work for adb? I literally will not be able to set this device up if that's the case. I don't have a USB c to a charger. This is the first post I've seen that's made me seriously consider sending this device back. I'm not buying a separate charger to use my damn phone and this is gonna be a deal breaker for me if there's not something else to it.

I've been using the USB A to USB C cable that came with the OG Pixel all this time for this reason. The one that came with the 2 and 3 didn't work.

3XL and 3A XL also, it's crazy that you can't flash a factory image with the supplied cable but then maybe it's not: Could be just another way they're trying to discourage flashing. Imagine you're new and you've been reading about this flashing thing and think it might be fun to screw around and you go for it. But, it doesn't work. You're phone is seemingly broken. You get in a mad panic and search around and try a C to A and it works. How many you think might be saying some version of phew, I'll never try that again? I bring this up because it's known and could be fixed easily but here we are and it's not. That isn't happening without reason.

I have no problem with the USB C to C cable on windows 10.

Either did I until I did. It's a long documented wrench in the gears... Go for it, but keep in mind that if you have any failed flashes to try a USB to C cable before digging any deeper. Lol
Just rebooting is different than full image flashes. My case it made it all the way through the boot partition then failed at system.

Otherwise, I usually use a USB A to C cable, because I am too lazy to connect the c cable on the back of my pc. but for fun, I'll try the next update with the USB c to c cable.

I used the supplied cord during the initial setup to transfer my old phone files to the XL. I've used the USB c cable that came with my HTC 10 for bootloader and root just because it was next to my computer. Never thought the supplied cable would be a problem.

It's most likely not the supplied cable, but an issue with your drivers or operating system.

The one that kills me are the factory images. I can unlock with the C to C and most other ADB tasks like flashing a patched boot but get a factory image to flash? Uh uh, no way not happening for me, ever, on my gear. Always stops somewhere along the way and ends in an error. Do nothing but switch to a C to A and the image flashes fine with no hiccups at all. Weird stuff.

Yah, this has been the Pixel 2 XL owners life for the last two years... The randomness of it all is the most frustrating when trying to help folks through their troubles on here.

IMO just use the A to C problem solved. Weird to have it as a problem at all is what I get out of it.

I had issues flashing using an A to C Usb Cable - so it is not an automatic thing that an A to C USB Cable will work everytime. I had to go thru several different cables until I eventually found one that one that worked. It was very frustrating.

Welcome to the P2XL legacy thread! ???

Works for me just find and transferring files
Maybe your PC drivers are buggy?

So, now I've flashed the factory image with the USB C to C cable and had no problems.

Again, as mentioned before it's not 100% one way or the other. It IS on the other hand the very first thing in your method you should change if fastboot failures occur.
Example from today...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-4-xl/help/stuck-fastboot-flashing-november-update-t3997459

Mine works fine on both my laptop and main pc, try updating your chipset drivers.

usb connection with pc suddenly dead

Hello suddenly my nexus s stopped connecting with data with the pc it only charges, tried with 3 diffrent computers with diffrent os , no menu popping on nexus and nothing connected on the computer(like i didnt connect anything), i removed the battery left it for some time installed stock rom still nothing. It was acting normally for a second and the other it stopped any help appreciated!
Are you sure you're using the cable that came with the phone? I have an LG Wink featurephone here that uses the same connector at the phone end -- its cable will charge my Nexus S (using the computer, obviously, but also when used with either the LG or Samsung charger) but no USB connection happens when I use it. Only the cable that came with my Nexus S provides a USB connection when I connect to the computer. I guess there are pinout differences between the two cables.
If you're sure you're using the right cable, I would guess that it's gone bad if it doesn't work on any computer. You can buy an (overpriced) replacement from Samsung or maybe a cheaper one on eBay or at a retail store. If the latter, be sure the seller lists it as compatible with the Nexus S.
it happened with the original cable ppfff i dont know...
same problem

Hi
I have the same problem
I have no idea what the problem could be.
We are not alone with this problem: code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13553
Now installed stock rom as well but still the same problem.
If i starting the NS in the bootloader mode the phone is not recognized by the computer.
It would be great, if someone knows a solution!

I've been trying to get help with this for weeks. No one is even responding to my posts. I thought it was something OBSURDLY simple, such that people didn't even want to waste their time responding to me.

My phone charges just fine. And my USB connectivity was fine until I manually installed 2.3.4.
~I had usb connection problems after upgrade to 2.3.4 a bit different but I managed to get the USB back by formatting the SD card.

I was on 2.3.3 when this happened, i tried to flash 2.3.4 then and again it didnt work but the strange thing is that when i was moving the mini usb the first times up and down it was shown for a moment as a broken usb device. Then this stopped and was not shown at all on the computer and finally the phone charged super slow when connected to electricity
Beginning to believe that it is a physical prob with USB connector on phone. It seems to start/stop charging when wiggling usb on phone but no mounting. Doe anyone know best way to resolve , T-mobile but bought from Best Buy? so to Best Buy? FOR SUPPORT /EXCHANGE? suggestions?
I've seen loose connections before. My suggestion ain't the cheapest but the plug, on the cable end, shouldn't wiggle. I went to a corporate sprint store, the ones that actually have working display phones, and got their usb to micro usb data cable. The thing with that cable is when you plug it in the phone side, it goes into the jack firmly. You can almost feel the little locking tabs click into place. There should be no play or wiggle with that cable as long as there's no damage or abuse with the jack on the phone. IMO, that's a good data cable. It's never given me problems before.
Also, sometimes the cable is only wired for charging. A true data cable will be wired correctly and be able to both charge and transfer data. Usually the cables that come with the phone are crap quality. I don't know if my suggestion will help but it won't hurt to have a good cable for data transfer and flashing. The last thing you want is a flaky connection from a cheap cable when you're flashing roms. Russian roulette with bricking a phone in a worse case situation.
Did you try reboot the computer and the phone? How about a different usb port? How about unplug any other usb device in case it's conflicting for some unknown reason? It sounds like so many people with windows 7 are having problems. Usually always happens with a new os that's released. Xp, for flashing devices and programming different hardware devices, has never given of a problem. I have a small partition with xp on it just for that purpose only.
off to Samsung for repair for me...
After time on phone with them and a factory reset belief is that the usb connector is defective. BTW Best Buy just hands off to Samsung 1-800 #
So Back to a barely functional G-1 for a while, glad I could find it!
So is Samsung or the carriers replacing or fixing units?
My USB data died shortly after 2.3.4 ota update.
Wifi FTP is fine for data transfer but I want USB debug to work...
Shame on google and Samsung, this bug has been around for months.
no shame on anyone...
I went through a factory reset with Samsung on phone that isolated the problem to what is apparently a loose usb connector, nothing to do with software... only hassle is sending it in for repair, as` mentioned problem needs to be dealt with Samsung customer service (not carrier or Best Buy), they were fine on phone...

Phone not being seen by any PC

So this issue started a few days ago. Any time I plugged my phone in it would constantly connect and disconnect from the pc. I've tried multiple usb cables, ports, and the 3 PCs I have with the same result on each. Now when I plug it in, it is no longer being recognized by the PC, Odin, ADB, etc... It will charge but that is it.
I have a warranty replacement coming to me however I need to be able to get this one back to stock... Any suggestions?
Before anyone asks, NO it has never been wet, dropped, damaged in any way, set on fire, caught in a land slide, earthquake, what have you.. The phone itself functions perfectly fine. All drivers are up to date, none of my PCs configurations have changed. I have one I use specifically for app development and not even that one will see the phone.
I had the same problem. I used a different cable and it all worked better....now with that said it happened again so I flashed my phone back to stock and all was well.
Then went to flashing ROMS.

Really check out the micro usb cable. A bad cable will just about always allow a device to charge, but data transfer is another story. If you really have tried a few micro USB cables, then it the problem relies elsewhere. Try restarting both phone and PC, and if neither works, sounds like you have a busted port on the Skyrocket.
Thank you both for your responses. I am a PC technician so I followed my usual troubleshooting steps to figure this out. I narrowed it down to either all of my cables are bad (not a chance) or the phone is just f**ked (likely). Ah well ill have to try to use another way to force the stock firmware and recovery on here. Lol
HTC = Hate The Consumer
I use my old Nokia OEM USB cable. Connects with the right number of pins on the USB connection end. I'd check your USB cables for # of pins . Skyrocket uses 5 I believe. Also that there is sufficient power to your USB ports. Aka avoid front USB ports which could only be 4 pin....

When you plug the usb cable in, do you see the usb icon at the top left of your screen? I have to pull that window down to tell it to connect to pc, then confirm it again before mine connects. Mine doesn't auto connect on its own.
I see you've been a member for a few years so if its not connecting, that really sucks man. Hope you get it figured out.

Not running the AOKP ROM are you? The R3 build had an issue with this, and all AOKP will disable USB to PC if you enable 'fast charge' under ROM Control...
Good luck :S
According to what I've been reading you can try using the *#7284# code and setting the USB portion from PDA to MODEM and then back to PDA and it would kickstart the connection. No dice for me though. Ive been through 7 different USB cables already.. I am not about to go and buy one just to keep playing with it my other phones connect just fine using the same cables. No, I am running the latest Sky ICS

(Solved ) USB not working

Here is my case, I am now on stock 4.1.1
When I connect my nexus to my PC, it only charges. I can neither mount USB storage nor attaching to debug mode. What even worse is that, I can't even run fastboot command in bootloader, so basically I can't flash a custom recovery.
As a result, I am now stuck on stock ROM.
Can anyone please give me an idea to get my USB driver work, or at least to flash a recovery?
EDIT: I have used fast charge before, so will it screwed up or disable the USB driver? Any way to restore it in my case?
EDIT: Solved. The two USB line charges only
Can anyone help me?
I have tried two USB lines with two PCs, so I do think there is a problem of my phone.

Hello barrielui,
would you describe more information how you solved that issue? What do you exactly mean by last line? It's working only for "charging" or for data transfer (mass_storage) too? You've found new type of USB cabel or what?
Unfortunately have the exactly same issue few days after upgrade to JLB 4.1.1 stock Rom. It works properly few days and than from some reason something happen, but don't know what&why and how to fix it.
Think maybe it's a hardware problem, but how it happened is mystery
I had issues with my usb for a while myself, it just kept getting worse until I would not get a charge at all. Your issue may be different than mine, but I had my nexus s the first week it came out. I had already planned to have my phone sent in for repair on my usb, so I figured I could tinker with it. It turns out that the little tab in my charge port was pushed down (away from the screen when holding in hand) just enough that it would barely make contact with my micro usb cables. I used a tac and slipped it in between and carefully pried up a little.
Caution, this may not be your problem, look at other options, or compare your usb port to another phone to determine if it is it. My tab was just barely gaped from the bottom.
Solution
Try cleaning the Nexus port pins with something pointy...deposits on pins inside cellphone port prevents the usb contact..clean it one by one with a pin and tell me if it worked

Help figuring out what's broken with my OnePlus One

Hello everyone,
A couple of weeks ago my USB data connection on my OnePlus One has stopped working.
This means that no connection is even detected on any computer.
This is not a driver issue as the computer doesn't even notice anything has plugged in.
I think it's not a software/ROM issue because the same applies to fastboot mode and recovery mode - no data connection, no "usb plugged in" sound on any computer, no device showing up.
It's also not a cable issue, as the same cable works on other OnePlus One's and I've tried many different known-to-be-working cables.
More facts:
1) When plugging to a computer USB port - the battery icon shows the charging (lightning) symbol for a half a second and disappears and it won't charge. The computer, of course, doesn't see a usb device plugged.
2) When connecting to an AC charger - it charges just fine.
3) I already tried replacing the dock connector and flat cable unit with a new one - did not solve the issue, which means the dock connector is fine.
Any insight on this will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

By dock connector, you mean the USB port? Typically, this issue arises when the pins in the USB port get damaged. I don't know how the rest works out, but if that particular section of pins have to communicate throughout the rest of the motherboard, perhaps the trail responsible for that may have somehow gotten damaged. This is a clueless theory, someone with more electrical/motherboard experience can verify this.
What I do know is that once the micro USB port has been replaced on the phone, the issue should be fixed. It happened to an S3 I still have and I got it replaced by a friend. Sadly, it happened to me at the wrong time since i had wiped the entire OS and internal storage and was relying on my USB OTG cable and a flash drive which contained a rare rom called Sonic Open Kang Project (SOKP).
DO NOTE that this has also been an issue with me on the software side of certain devices. I uave had practically every flagship device out there and have come across a point where this happens on both stock and custom roms. My Optimus G did it on custom roms, and my Nexus 7 2012 occasionally on stock. There were other devices I cannot remember but sometimes factory resets or replacing the rom helps. However, you did state that the result is still the same on fastboot/recovery, so this seems to be more on the hardware side.
I replaced the USB connector (including it's flex cable) entirely. Did not solve the issue.
What else could be wrong?
try again

I tried a lot of different computers and cables. None of them detect a USB connection.
Again, to clarify - they don't even SEE a usb device has been plugged in.

You running a custom recovery? If so, see if you can toggle the mtp on/off reboot with each back to recovery. Use the tools to check the filesystem, permissions, etc.
Could pins have damaged?
Well, I did replace the USB connector with a new one, so if pins are damaged it's gotta be on the motherboard side, and I can think of no reason why that would ever happen.
As for recovery, I'm running TWRP and I'm not sure I understand what you meant I should try. Can you elaborate?
Thanks

Malfunctioning USB port. Trying to root but can not connect to cpu to flash

To start off my USB port seems to be malfunctioning. I can charge but will always get the " charging slow" error. It will even charge via usb port on a pc but it will not recognize it as an external Storage unit. Ive changed the usb settings via developer settings. However i do not get a usb notification on my phone giving me the option to switch the function.
Is there a way to connect to a PC to use flashing tools/ADB in order to unlock my loader as well as flash and send commands to my phone. I can use LG AirDrive but i do not believe commands can be sent through that. Would greatly appreciate help since im lead to believe rooting has just hit for the Stylo 4.
If it is any importance. I am on the stylo 4 bought through best buy not attached to any carrier Q710ULM is my model number
Did you try another USB cable? Ive had several that broken inside and the same happened. Changing USB cable solved it
Ive tried several. It is definetly my USB port. I think dollar store chargers did it in. And now since its always slowly charging i think it won't do any data transfer maybe in fear of loss of data due to bad connection?

Yours is a micro USB port right? Most likely it's a faulty USB port. See if you can get a store to replace it
Yes. Well a Type C but android charger none the less. I guess id have to send to LG to honor the warranty. I didnt purchase ot from a carrier and also did not get aj insurance plan when i connected it to t mobile.
In other words you are saying im SOL for getting on ADB? Atleast until a one click root has a method for this device.
Just to test. Did you test in another computer to see if it is detects it?
My computer corrupted the adb connection due to faulty drivers. Reinstalling windows fixed it because in another computer that i have it was detected normally. It's just to test the whole scenario here. If it doesn't work RMA it to LG
Yes I tested it on a computer as well as multiple outlets. I finally just took the back off and took out the port. It had a lot of corrosion around it. Almost all teal colored. I blame those dollar store chargers. I have no other explanation behind why it happened. Either way there is luckily someone wihtin range selling a bunch of parts on offerup so I was able to pick uo a new port for 7 dollars off of him. When I removed the back I was pretty surprised to see how the "non-removable" batteries are packages in there. Just a bunch of layers wrapped up in thin plastic with some tape around it. haha
