Data recovery unrooted phone - General Questions and Answers

My brother lost his phone on the street, at least a few cars have driven over the mobile phone. It's a "Galaxy J3 2017 SM-J330F/Dual-Sim, Galaxy J3 Pro 2017". The screen is completely gone. It seems like the phone is still able to do something, it does light up a little when turned on. There's also some activity when plugged into a charger.
The phone is unrooted, dev-mode is turned off.
My brother is concerned about his privacy, so he wasn't connected to any cloud, nor logged in with a google account. And backups ... there are none.
He desperatly wants some photo's recovered from the device.
I searched a lot on how to accomplish this, but it looks like there's no way to do this without either enable dev-mode (which isn't posible since the screen is completely gone), or root the phone (same problem).
Is there anything else I can do? Is it worth a shot to have the screen replaced?

Replacing the glass/digitizer/LCD should work, you should be able to find an all in one combination that has the glass, digitizer and LCD altogether ready to put in. Then you just need to find a decent YouTube video detailing the teardown and screen replacement process for that specific model of device.

[Q] Motorola Spice XT300 has a very unresponsive screen?

Alright so I know that there has been some discussion on this POS model of a phone, but I would love to know before I get the digitizer replaced, if it's a bug or something else.
I guess it started about 8-10 months ago, my brother bought the phone from Mobilicity here in Canada and he let his friend borrow the phone for a call. She dropped it on the cement and the glass cracked. The LCD itself is functioning, but when I got it I had to wipe the device through the recovery menu using Power-X then ALT-L. Anywho every month or so since I got it a few months back for free and long story short it's been glitching out constantly.
Now finally the screen barely works and until I got the "smart" idea to recover it again thinking it would fix but the screen only reads the bottom right side and nothing else. Oh and I'm stuck on that stupid Touch Android to Begin screen. So I'm pretty much SOL'd. Basically my question is this; is it the digitizer, corrupted FW, the phone is just shot or all of the above?
If it's repairable could someone please tell me how to enable usb debugging without the touchscreen or in the very least bypass this Android screen with the keyboard, PC or both? I used Droid Explorer a couple days ago to even control the screen with ScreenCast?
I know of ADB, Input Events, and stuff like that but I really can't figure out what to do. I thought about Clockwork but because the phone has a locked bootloader, I wasn't sure I could even install. Hell I even consider using my other phone to do a NANDROID backup but even that won't work.
So in short what the hell do I do?

[Q] a very serious problem i think (can't even recovery)

hi guys, i already searched for a thread of someone with the same issue, but i haven't found anything on the whole internet (maybe it's just because i'm nervous as sh*t)... please let me know if i did wrong
the problem is: yesterday i was using regularly my Nexus 5, but suddenly i wasn't able to turn it on again. Just like a second before i was using it, and then it won't wake up. Now it is still turned off, i can't wake it up in any way, i tried every combination of keys, i tried holding on the power button for more than a minute, i tried pushing it hard, i tried everything. The only thing i'm able to do is plugging it on the charger, then it goes on a bootloop with the word "google" and a small vibration (just as it's like to turn it on) and then after a second the screen becomes black again, and this happens continuously untill i unplug it (i tried even for 2 hours and it still do like that). It is just like it wants to wake up, but then it is turned off, and on, and off, and on...
when he does like that i tried holding the vol down button just to try to enter the recovery mode, but even when i achieve to enter it, it still turn off so i can't decide what to do. Every guide i read on the web tells me to backup, then to erase all data, or something similar... but the problem is that i can't even access recovery mode, so that i'm not able to do anything if the phone is turned off completely.
i already called for the warranty, i have a completely stock phone so it's not a problem and i think they will change my phone, but i'm really worried this will erase all the data i have in my sd, and i would like to know if there's a way to copy what's inside the memory of the phone without turning it on
sorry guys but i'm really depressed, i've bought the phone on january... not even a year and i've wasted 350€
So, first question have you tried plugging into a computer? You may be able to pull some files off.
Second, was any of your stuff backed up using cloud storage, such as google drive? If not... You have my sympathy.
What app(s) were you running when it "Died"?[Edit: Died]
So you are completely stock, no root, no custom recovery, no nothing?

1) yes i tried: it does the same as if i plug it into the charger (google and vibration for a second, then turned off again, repeatedly). I can't access the data from my pc with the way i was used before (i could copy data only if the phone was on)
2) i use dropbox, google drive, and others, but not with the syncronization (i decided when and what to upload) so there's a lot of things that now aren't accessible and i'm scared i'll lose
3) well i wasn't using anything when it died... i think the cronometer was running, maybe whatsapp... recently i downloaded ePSXe for android with a couple of ROMs, but for a whole week or two i never had problems using it
4) yes completely stock, the only thing i did was abiliting the developer options (but a looong time ago, and i never changed them, i was only curious). With my old smartphone i used to play a lot with custom roms, but now i wanted to keep my nexus clean at least until the end of the warrancy
news from the google service: they told me some procedures to do, any of them work. They told me that their warrancy works like that: first they will send me another nexus 5 (not new, only a refurbished one) for the price of a new phone, then i have to send them my old phone. When it arrives, they will refurbish it, and they will give me back my 350€.
I really think that's not very fair... first because i don't want a phone that somebody used before me, and i don't want to give my phone to someone else
second because they don't really care that i lost all my data... after all this mess i will only obtain a phone that isn't new, and without my data! just like if google erased all my data for nothing.
please guys at least tell me if there's a way to recover all the data i've lost. You know: i have a 16gb flash storage full of data in my hand that i want to copy on my pc, there should be a way!
sorry for the anger
Have you read anything from @supersu or @simms22. Both of them are very knowledgeable on the N5.
The other thing is you could try calling google again and get a different person.

OP, your power button is stuck, nothing you can do except RMA (or maybe take your phone apart).

i also read a forum in the country i live (italy) and it seems to be a frequent problem these days... a lot of guys who have a 9-10 months old phone accuse the same issue, and the only solution seems to be the motherboard substitution (or the google warancy phone substitution). Google told me they will give me a refurbished phone, but i know sometimes they have scratches, they are not perfect, so why do i have to trade my phone for another one that could not be new? i know they used to send new phones in the early days... Do you guys have experience in that? have you ever send you nexus5 to google? what did they do?

You get a refurbished one because too many people have RMA'd for silly reasons like loose power buttons, speaker hole size and screen light bleed. So blame them.
Usually a refurbished device should be near-perfect; those who have gotten ones with damage are just unlucky; and you can just call Google again anyways.

i think i'll see if i can get my phone fixed with the LG warrancy in a LGcentre in my town, at least they will tell me if i have to throw my phone away... then i'll use the google warrancy.
to me it sounds as your storage corrupted, not power button. if it was power button, youd be able to get it booted, then it would bootloop. if it is the storage that corrupted, an rma would be best.

S7 non responsive screen but leds and charges ok

Hi I have just bought an s7 which turned out to be a Korean G930L but I cant get any response out if it apart from the 2 bottom leds and and the blue one. No response from trying to get into recovery or download mode, basically a black screen though it does vibrate on what i think is start up. It is found by pc and Odin and charges ok, I can tell as I can see properties on pc. But no other response. Is it possible that the previous owner tried to root it using non korean rom or TWRP? Any advice on how to fix either getting TWRP on or screen to light up. I am sorry for being so vague I have pulled it apart and checked all of the connections, screen, motherboard etc but nothing. Odin sees the phone but I am not sure if I am in Download mode so wont flash, as cant see screen.
Or chuck it out or put back on eBay.

Your phone's display screen has a problem , sadly you have to replace the display screen. Go to the nearest samsung service center.
Thanks it isnt worth it I will just sell it on ebay. I have been able to get to some of the screens [though still black] as it talks to me in Korean and the screen is giving haptic feedback so aspects of it are alive still. I am wondering now if someone has tried to ROOT it and semi bricked it or turned off the display internally. The other night night no matter what I pushed it vibrated and answered me with the same korean statement. I am trying to get into Recovery Mode without a screen and flash it without a screen but proving frustrating, maybe samsung dealer can reflash it with needing a screen.

It's not a software issue, there must be water damage or display is broken/went off for some other reason.
I had this same issue with my note 5, I was able to hear everything, touch key and notification lights were on too, that time my note 5 was accidentally dropped by me. So 99% your display is broken. Simply go to service center and get a quote, but display will cost same as used s7. Try to get after market screen.
ok thanks for the advice, i will head to them after the xmas break

Help, my Pixel died. Fastboot works, bootloader and screen not. Data recovery?

Hello,
What happened:
I updated about two to three weeks ago to Android 10, looking forward for another happy year with my Pixel 1 128GB, bought on day one.
The very next morning I started a timer (default clock app) and wondered why it never rang. Boom, my Pixel is dead. Countdown to self destruction? Just kidding.
Of course the device was not dropped, no water or whatsoerver touched the phone recently. It just died silently on my table.
State summary:
Bootloader locked, was never unlocked
OEM Unlock is disabled / never enabled in the running system
Original Android 10 running for approx 12-16h
No root, custom rom, whatsoever. Stock android.
While still working, adb was connecting fine on my PC (I used scrcpy every now and then)
All that works now is if I press Vol up, Vol down and Power for approx. 10s, the phone vibrates. Then I can see in my PC that my Pixel is in fastboot mode. The screen stays off at all times. As my bootloader is locked, I can't do a lot, even flashing a zip with stock firmware won't work. If I type 'fastboot reboot bootloader' the device disappears from fastboot and never reaches adb.
I also tried to discharge my phone, thats why I write only now. Takes quite long if the screen is off to empty the battery in fastboot mode. All that happend now is that once I charge my phone the status LED is flashing red for some minutes. Now my phone can enter fastboot again, no bootlaoder, no screen.
Is there anything I can do to get to my data? I already bought a new phone, so disassembly without reasembly would be an option. After almost full three years rma is no option any more.
Greetings!

Pixel has an auto backup feature so everything should be backed up to the Google servers and if you use Google photos then your photos are most likely backed up. However if your screen is black, check the display closely if you can see even a small crack in your AMOLED display. I had a Galaxy J5 2017 that broke on the table and got a crack in the display and when an AMOLED display is cracked then the whole display goes black. It can happen from pressure on the display. Idk if you had cases on but the Pixel can flex quite a bit. If you see a crack then you can replace the display and be good as these AMOLED displays are so fragile. Otherwise it's a software related issue...

Hey,
some while passed, and I managed to get the most important data back by a Helium Backup Pro. That did not work initially due to a bug, but in the end I could get it to run. Google Backup did not help at all... I don't understand why and I can't check any more if it was enabled or disabled . Does Google Backup restore work only on new Pixel? My new Phone is a Xiaomi. Worst data loss was Google Authenticator, that is not backed up anywhere as it seems. I almost logged out of my Github Account forever, a ssh certificate plus github support saved my butt.
As I have 2 years old kid my phone was sometimes dropped. But until now I could not see any tiny damage at all (glass screen protectors broke more often). I will take a closer look at my screen the next days.
Cheers
Edit: I had a close look, tried to bend the phone. The Pixel is quite stable, I am impressed. Also I was very surprised that I could not see any scratch at the screen, the screen protectors did a good job over all the years. So I could not see a tiny crack or similar.

google android backup is a **** show. you are lucky if it restores even half of what it promises. I used it with my pixel 2. set it up to back up everything . then that phone's screen died and i restored the backup to a new phone, only some apps came over, no app settings, and no SMS. it doesn't work. don't bother using it.

Cover Screen Issue

I have had this phone for one week and unfortunately have a problem with the small display on the cover. The display intermittently crashes and you are no longer able to see the time, charge status, signal strength, or any notifications without restarting the phone. Interestingly the crash does not affect the display of charging info when it is on the wireless charger. I am working with Samsung to get this resolved and they have assured me that they will replace the phone if necessary. So far they have tried wiping the cache, and having it re-imaged at one of their authorized repair sites with no success. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue or have an idea about what could be causing it. BTW...... I really love this phone otherwise.

I have observed the same issue. I've noticed that it recovers eventually but it is annoying as well. I called the premier service but they have not acknowledged it is a software bug yet. They had me factory reset but I am still observing the same.
I can also confirm it is not due to the case they ship with, nor the leather case, or finger grime that may be conflicting with the capacitive sensor. The rest of the phone knows the main screen is closed. My suspicion (speculation) is that it is the software as the cover display is really the only new hardware portion, in regards to most of the components from S10 parts bin, or Fold screen tech which has been pretty mature from a design standpoint.
Love the phone, hope they they can resolve this in an update sooner or later. Please let us know if its common to all.
Thanks.
I have the same issue. Been using the phone for about 12 days and the cover screen goes bonkers. It will appear some time but only clock and battery life, can't use it for notifications nor calls nor selfie camera. Plus open phone to answer is not functioning
This is my second Z-Flip - had the original one on release day and now the 5g version. Yesterday, out of nowhere (for the first time on either phone) the cover screen went blank. It works still (I can change songs and answer calls, for example) but the screen is black. This is 100% a software issue. Called Samsung 'premier' which puts you in the line for normal support, when they pick up they transfer you to premier (makes no sense). They suggest a factory reset. Odd thing is 2 calls today actually showed on the display. No rhyme or reason. I have tried powering down, restart, and safe mode. Very frustrating.
I'm also having this issue, I had a different issue in the past where the phone would not recognise when it was opened or closed and just behaved like a regular smartphone with screen on off. The cover screen also came on at the same time as the main screen so basically the phone thought both were one display.
This time I am getting the issue as above, the screen is black, pressing power does not bring it up (always, sometimes it will randomly show and I can use it, before a factory reset I just did it wouldn't be functional as touch only worked halfway, I could drag it left or right but it would just stay where it was, thinking my finger was still on it.) if I press the power repeatedly sometimes it shows, sometimes it shows offset so only half the display lights up and has moved everything to that side and cropped it. It's completely a software bug, my phone has no scratches or dents and is in great condition. It's a newish model as my original Z Flip got replaced by my network by a 5G model.
