Help, my Pixel died. Fastboot works, bootloader and screen not. Data recovery? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Hello,
What happened:
I updated about two to three weeks ago to Android 10, looking forward for another happy year with my Pixel 1 128GB, bought on day one.
The very next morning I started a timer (default clock app) and wondered why it never rang. Boom, my Pixel is dead. Countdown to self destruction? Just kidding.
Of course the device was not dropped, no water or whatsoerver touched the phone recently. It just died silently on my table.
State summary:
Bootloader locked, was never unlocked
OEM Unlock is disabled / never enabled in the running system
Original Android 10 running for approx 12-16h
No root, custom rom, whatsoever. Stock android.
While still working, adb was connecting fine on my PC (I used scrcpy every now and then)
All that works now is if I press Vol up, Vol down and Power for approx. 10s, the phone vibrates. Then I can see in my PC that my Pixel is in fastboot mode. The screen stays off at all times. As my bootloader is locked, I can't do a lot, even flashing a zip with stock firmware won't work. If I type 'fastboot reboot bootloader' the device disappears from fastboot and never reaches adb.
I also tried to discharge my phone, thats why I write only now. Takes quite long if the screen is off to empty the battery in fastboot mode. All that happend now is that once I charge my phone the status LED is flashing red for some minutes. Now my phone can enter fastboot again, no bootlaoder, no screen.
Is there anything I can do to get to my data? I already bought a new phone, so disassembly without reasembly would be an option. After almost full three years rma is no option any more.
Greetings!

Pixel has an auto backup feature so everything should be backed up to the Google servers and if you use Google photos then your photos are most likely backed up. However if your screen is black, check the display closely if you can see even a small crack in your AMOLED display. I had a Galaxy J5 2017 that broke on the table and got a crack in the display and when an AMOLED display is cracked then the whole display goes black. It can happen from pressure on the display. Idk if you had cases on but the Pixel can flex quite a bit. If you see a crack then you can replace the display and be good as these AMOLED displays are so fragile. Otherwise it's a software related issue...

Hey,
some while passed, and I managed to get the most important data back by a Helium Backup Pro. That did not work initially due to a bug, but in the end I could get it to run. Google Backup did not help at all... I don't understand why and I can't check any more if it was enabled or disabled . Does Google Backup restore work only on new Pixel? My new Phone is a Xiaomi. Worst data loss was Google Authenticator, that is not backed up anywhere as it seems. I almost logged out of my Github Account forever, a ssh certificate plus github support saved my butt.
As I have 2 years old kid my phone was sometimes dropped. But until now I could not see any tiny damage at all (glass screen protectors broke more often). I will take a closer look at my screen the next days.
Cheers
Edit: I had a close look, tried to bend the phone. The Pixel is quite stable, I am impressed. Also I was very surprised that I could not see any scratch at the screen, the screen protectors did a good job over all the years. So I could not see a tiny crack or similar.

google android backup is a **** show. you are lucky if it restores even half of what it promises. I used it with my pixel 2. set it up to back up everything . then that phone's screen died and i restored the backup to a new phone, only some apps came over, no app settings, and no SMS. it doesn't work. don't bother using it.

[Q] Nexus 5 screen showing colorful static

Has anyone come across this before? I was watching a video on MX Player not too long ago, and it seems to have resulted in a permanent colourful static for the phone.
I can't really tell if it's doing anything, but when I go through the motions of resetting it or booting into bootloader, the screen does not change at all.
Interestingly the volume buttons are still working, and if I press the area of the screen where I think the buttons are (e.g., the back/home/programs buttons) I get the right vibrations. Which leads me to believe my screen is broken, and that it's a hardware fault. I'm hoping pretty hard this isn't the case, as my phone is only two months old and it was a replacement for a 6 month old Nexus 4 which had stopped charging.
Anyone come across this before? I'm hoping there's a kind of solution somewhere out there... To make matters worse I bought this phone via a parallel importer AND I'm currently overseas and won't be back till the end of January.
Sigh. Photo of screen is as attached - please forgive the terrible quality as I had to use my laptop webcam.
Thanks in advance, everyone!

Only time I've seen something like this was when my integrated graphics card on my desktop overheated, everything still worked, but colorful static everywhere. I'd let it cool down for a while, chances are it was pretty hot when it did that, and see if high temps might make it happen again.
I just had the same thing happen. Phone had been in my pocket and I had just taken it out to check the time maybe 10 minutes before it happened. The only difference with mine was I bumped into a table and hit the phone in my pocket. It does have a case on it and there is no sign of damage at all such as a cracked screen or anything. The static only lasts for a few seconds and thats right after I force it to reboot. After that it just goes to an all black screen. My LED indicator light is still flashing at me telling me I have an email though so I'm not sure what the deal is.
Were you able to resolve this issue? I too just experienced this issue as well and my phone is currently unusable. Thanks!
Do a full wipe as in wiping the entire phone and making it as if you just got it out of the box. if it persist RMA

Hi, I broke my screen (really bad smash) and had have this static on my new screen. The new screen was apparently fully tested. When using the slim port i can display on my TV and the digitizer works fine, its just this same colour static on the handset. I am now waiting for a replacement USB flex (it was a bit bent in the break) and i expect the new USB flex will fix it. If not then its a bad screen.
Will post the results when i get the parts
Fixed!
Hi,
My new USB flex arrived today. I installed it and found my screen is working perfectly.
The first pic is the same colour static that the op had.. Second one is the USB flex board / ribbon. Ebay for 20 Euro. Please remember that USA users are LG D820 and Europe/rest of works LG D821. I think its important for this part as the aerials connect here ans they are different in USA.
Good luck everyone

Static screen and freezing
Hi All,
Need help here with my 6 month old Nexus 5. It has been pretty good with no issues but since last evening, it started behaving weird. The chronological events are as follows
1. While browsing on Chrome some websites were not scrolling intermittently. This was only in the browser.
2. After about 10 mins of the above behavior the entire phone froze and didn't release itself. I had to force reboot by holding the power button down for about 10 secs. When the screen came on, it was the static screen
3. I again pressed the power button a couple of times but no use. Held it again for 10 secs, then phone rebooted and everything was fine.
4. Continued to use the phone and everything was normal until this afternoon, when the phone again froze while browsing a website
5. Since then the phone screen shows the static and if I press the power button once, the screen switches off and press again the screen comes on with the display showing properly. I can now only perform one touch which is registered and the screen freezes. If I switch off and on again the next screen / action is shown which is the action I did in the previous touch. Every time it registers one touch and I have to switch off and on again to see the next screen. Sometimes the phone just shows static and I have to wait a few seconds (30 sec) before using it again.
6. If I make a call to my phone, I hear one ring and then it is busy tone like I've cancelled the call. However the phone does not show the incoming call.
My phone has been intact and is well protected with screen guards and case. There is no physical misuse / abuse of the phone. I managed to shut down the phone and enter recovery. Here as well it only registered one touch, though the phone was processing and moving the next step. I somehow managed to initiate a factory reset through the settings, but no use.
Now in about 2-3 hrs the phone has become completely useless. I'm uncertain what the problem is, all my touch inputs are registered and processed. The screen just doesn't refresh to the next and requires a power off/on. I picked up this phone in the US and now in India. So I can't RMA the phone and I don't have warranty for this in India.
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

I'm getting the same issue. Tried soft and hard reset. Opened her up and seated all cables. The issue is still persisting. Is replacing the USB flex the way to go?
Hey I have a nexus 5 32GB and the screen started to do weird things and now it isn't working at all. Its the same in recovery mode also do I think that it's not a software problem.
I think there is an issue with the motherboard. Please help me out.
Thanks in advance.

Same thing, Screen now black. Won't turn on...
Hey everyone, I know that this is kind of late to the thread, but I have what I believe is the same problem as everybody else here. I had my Nexus 5 in my pocket for maybe five minutes, and in between the times that I put it in my pocket and took it out again to reply to a text, the screen went all colorful and static on me (Red tint, almost as if I had twilight on, but I didn't). I tapped the back, and the colors went back to normal, but the digitizer wasn't responding to touch. Then, It went black. No color, the speakers weren't working, neither was the backlight on the display. I took it apart, and figured its either the USB flex cable (which looked frayed), or the mainboard. If its the USB flex cable, then I know I can repair it. If it's the mainboard... well, as a sixteen year-old who has no current source of income, I'm out of a $400 phone.
Pictures attatched. Thanks!

I took the phone the LG service center and the technician seemed to know this issue and immediately said that the USB flex cable needs to be changed. The entire fix took about 5 mins and the phone is working fine since then.
Sorry for the delayed response.
I hate to necro up this thread but I'm having similar problems to the op with my nexus 5. About two weeks ago I saw my screen get grainy just like the op and many others mentioned and then the screen went completely black. The screen still "turns on" but it's just black with the backlight on. I can hear notifications and other things and I'm hoping that all I need to replace is just the flex cable. If it's a problem with the logic board then I'm screwed basically.
Anyway that's my story. Bought the flex cable and it'll be here by tuesday so I'll find out then if I'm lucky or not. Fingers crossed.

Hey man, did you ever try this out and get it to work? I have the same problem and was thinking of trying this out but wanted confirmation first.
Thanks!
Just wanted to post here to say that this thread just saved me a lot of money!
Had the same issue (static showing on the screen). Local phone repair shop told me it needed a new screen, without even looking at it(!), and it would be £120 + labour. Told them I would think about it, and came home and did some more research, found this thread. Ordered a replacement USB flex cable from eBay, and fit it by following a YouTube tutorial, and now the phone is back working fine. brilliant!
Thanks xda!
I had a problem where my screen looked like an old CRT TV with particles flashing all over on anything with a static dark background. Any ideas

Screen doesn't work. (story)

I am a Nexus 4 user. My brother sent me this Nexus 5 to me, but had problems with its screen. Sometimes it wouldn't show anything, other times it would show white lines and other times it would press things on my screen while showing some white lines. Some punches fixed the issue, but it wasn't a permanent solution.
Today, I opened the back cover, removed the battery and EVERYTHING else. Afterwards I cleaned it up with some cotton pads safely and without any force and attached the parts. When I pressed the power button, it didn't show the Google logo because I had forgotten to attach a wire. When I saw it, I attached the cable and it worked; it showed the Google logo, booted up to the part where I can see my lockscreen but then it went black.
When I tried to turn it on, it wouldn't show anything. I didn't destroy anything(imho) during the procedure. The LED light is yellow when I attach it to a USB(meaning it charges) and Windows 10 recognizes it when I connect the phone to the PC(a message pops up saying Nexus 5 was connected). "adb devices" shows the devices.
Is it the screen? I have un-screwed it a thousand times. Do I have to replace the screen+digitizer?
Because the screen wasn't working properly to begin with, it was probably defective and on its way out.
I recommend getting a cheap third party screen from eBay or Aliexpress. The third party screens aren't as good as an oem screen but the price is good for what you get in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Full-Asse...065754?hash=item4ae8029eda:g:gaIAAOSwrklVJian
Is that good? The price is fine imho(we use euro but it will be +3-4 on the price converted from pounds).
Btw, I forgot to mention that sometimes the screen shows the backlight but doesn't display anything.
Sounds like the phone needs a new screen. Also check Aliexpress for screens. I find the prices a bit better than eBay.
Sorry to revive an old thread...
I have the exact same issue. What really bugs me is that the screen is only ~2 weeks old. Worked fine for a while, then I pulled it out of my pocket one day and only the backlight worked. LED blinked, phone vibrated, showed up in ADB, etc. - it was on. Only the backlight showed though. It worked when it booted up, and I got it to go into recovery. I reflashed my ROM, and it worked for about fifteen minutes after that. Now, it doesn't show anything at all (not even the backlight).
Did you just end up getting a new screen? Maybe I should just get a new phone... the cell radio also seems to be going out.

Black screen even after reboot

Hello folks, I was using my op7p a few days ago and the screen just suddenly went black. The phone is still on and I can type the pass code with haptic feedback, etc. But the display is fully black, even after a hard reboot.
I've only had 4 months and I've never dropped it or got water on it.
I see my options as opening my phone myself and voiding water proofing to check the display connection, or attempting to format data in TWRP (without a display) and sending it back to the eBay guy I bought it off.
I really hope there's another fix because neither of these are ideal. Any ideas?
Can you still connect to your PC and execute commands? Could try wiping it like that and returning it.

Mi Mix 3 Bootloop after screen replacement

Hi, I'm new to the forum and to mobile operating system troubleshooting in general. I'm hoping to gain some insight into an issue I'm having.
I broke the screen on my mi mix 3 and after waiting for 2 months it finally arrived from Shenzhen. Yesterday I disassembled the phone, connected the new screen, turned it on, and it just went into a bootloop. I've never changed any part of the operating system on the phone before so I just assumed something was making a poor connection. I unplugged all the leads and plugged them back in again, checked that everything was firmly in place, and ended with the same result.
Fastboot will run sometimes for 10+ minutes and then the phone will just shut off, normal booting it will switch from "Mi" to "MIX" and the animation at the bottom of the screen will freeze after a couple clicks and it will loop back to restarting (but twice it has just ended with an all white screen). Rebooting from Mi Recovery mode results in the same.
From what I've seen I'll just need to follow this and flash the phone : https ://c.mi .com/thread-2504118-1-1.html?t=1590725045909
But my question, is there any possible way to try to fix this issue without loosing all my data and without using a back door method that may just brick the phone?
Thanks for any help, btw I still have the back glass off (I've tried with the fingerprint scanner plugged in, nothing) just in case it could somehow be a hardware issue.
So I've given up on trying to save my data, I don't really care much about that to be honest. I just really like this phone and would like to use it. I tried to flash the phone using Miui's official instructions but I can't unlock the bootloader because I can't download the app Miui's flash tool is requiring me to download on the phone to authorize it.
I guess I'll keep looking for a work around.

I changed my display too and it's bootlooping. Did you solve this problem?
I changed my Display too...everything worked fine when I tested it. I unplugged it again to clean the phone and to bring on the glue..when I had the Screen on I restarted and had a black screen...so tried to remove the screen which then just broke...so I ordered a new one and a new display flex cable - I didn't glue the screen yet because I either experience black screens when the screen gets pushed against the backplate or the phone ends in a bootloop -> for the bootloop thingy I just waited for about 10 minutes and then it started normally so there must be something with replacement screens...I don't know whats going on -.-
Hi
Has anyone managed to get this fixed?
The screen works initially but after a while it goes blank, reboot I get the Mix logo not mix 5G. The replacement is a LCD.
Looks like it is stuck in bootloop as inserting sim does phone does not ring when I call it nor front face camera clunk when I slide it

Question Black Screen of Death

Have any of you gotten the black screen of death with your P7P?
Over the weekend, my screen appears to have bit the dust. I was playing a game and the screen went weird. I saw snow, chunks of different apps and such, and then the screen went black. I tried rebooting and googled the issue. Tried all the suggested solutions and none worked.
My screen is completely dark, even from boot. No google logo during boot.
Phone appears to be running as I get haptic responses to the buttons when it's on, just nothing on the screen and no responses to touch.
ABD sorta works, but sees the phone as unauthorized (worked fine on that laptop before). Only thing I could do was get into fastboot. Tried the A and B slots with the same results.
Google told me to take it to a warranty center as I'm outside the return period. Fortunately I have one close by. It's just annoying that it died after barely two weeks.

This has happened on other devices; the 5a apparently had a significant problem with this. The fortunate thing is, fixing it usually just takes a few hours, although the repair center might need to wait for parts.
If you can get into fastboot then use Google's Android flash tool to reinstall. I had something very similar and I was fine after reflashing

I'll take a look at it if I have time tonight, but have an emergency dentist appointment after work. May just end up taking to Asurion in the morning in case it is hardware.

That's what I'm wondering since the phone was released only a few weeks ago.
First shop in my area I called said they didn't have parts and couldn't get them yet.
The other one was familiar with the problem with the 5a's and had a 7P screen in stock, thinking it was likely hardware. I'm taking it over tomorrow morning.

I blame systemless hosts.
My device freezes up when I enable that. There are few users with same problem. But there are majority who have no problems.
If fastboot mode is also blank, its hardware fault.
and you've tried to turn it off by holding power and both volume buttons together for up to 30 seconds and then turning it on?

Yeah, that's what the problem typically has been with the 5a. No idea what causes it; my wife was just scrolling through social media when it froze up, then the screen went black, and the phone wouldn't turn on again. It was visible via USB as as a QPST target (Qualcomm 9008 bulk something or other) so my assumption was the bootloader somehow got corrupted. I'm not sure how, since this was not during an update. Fixing it involved replacing the mainboard.
Generally when a display fails, you'll get artifacts on the screen but the device will still work, more or less.
If a qualcomm phone switches to 9008 mode in the middle of operation its either EMMC fault. Either emmc is damaged or emmc to cpu connection break.
