Terrible 1080 60fps quality! - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

Why is that the 60fps video on 1080p looks like garbage? I would like a technical explanation if someone knows it. Is it the camera hardware? Or low-end processor?
I've made a video comparison between 30 and 60fps so you can see the absurd difference in quality / resolution.
Seriously, I can't really understand and accept that a 2019 phone, made by Google, even though it is the "cheap" version, records such trash video on 1080 60fps. This isn't actually even 1080p, seems like a 480p or lower just upscaled to 1080 to fool people!
Even the iPhone 6s (which damn, its from 2015) I had was capable of recording 60fps perfectly without any perceptible quality loss. (I know a bit more noise or darker image is normal because the sensor receives less light)

Also, some printscreens:
30 FPS

60 FPS

It's not garbage. Shooting at higher frames just requires more light. From the video I can see it wasn't the brightest environment but if you were to go inside in a well lit room you would definitely see a noticeable difference.
My 3a XL takes excellent 1080p 60fps videos when in a well lit area.

Dude, it's not about the light intensity. It drops the resolution. As I said, I know 60fps requires more light and normally produces a bit darker or noisier video if there is not enough light. But on the Pixel 3a it clearly drops the resolution, not the brightness. I've tried under daylight sun and it is the same. The iphone 6s I had recorded 1080 60fps without dropping the res even with low light.

? Idk what to tell you then, it's fine for me. Might be something wrong with the small 3a series, or could be software related or even just a hardware defect on your device in particular.

I also noticed the huge drop in resolution like it's upscaling 720p or even 480p footage. You can count the pixel when shooting 1080p 60fps

UPDATE: I just installed the 7.0 apk and there's an option that when enabled, the 60fps looks like real 1080P, it looks very sharp just like the 30fps. Trust me, it's way better!!!

Is there any way I can install the 7.0 without overwriting the official current stock version of the 3a?

You can try shelter:

I often use ZipSigner (from APK Mirror) to detach an App from playstore.

I've used a modded version that had the developer options in settings. There are over 50 options and I was messing around with them until I found out that my 60fps looked very sharp and when zooming in, it was as good as the 30fps option.

Can't be an issue of my device only, I saw some review videos on YT and I could notice the problem also... And some more people complaining about it.
Anyway I can't get a replacement cause I dont live on the US, but honestly I think this is software related.
You say your 3a XL does not have this bad quality on 60 fps?

[APP] Anyone Use HDR Camera+ (photo comparison inside)

**I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO AFFILIATION WITH THIS APP OR THE PRODUCERS OF THIS APP**
OK, so I was browsing the market and came across HDR Camera+ yesterday. Was pretty excited to see what it could do, but didn't have much on the level of expectations. So, I took *IDENTICAL (*to the best of my ability) photos, one with the standard camera and one with the HDR Camera+ app. Below are my results...

I thought the "quality" difference was very clear, and I was pretty amazed in all honesty. The color difference is the main thing I noticed, with colors appearing more vivid to me.
Overall, extremely satisfied and excited to do a little more picture taking with it. My only negative is the obvious, can't really take "action" photos with it because it takes about 4 photos in different exposures and if the object is moving, I could imagine the results to not be what you'd want. I have a 2-year old who's attention doesn't span for over 2 seconds lol.

No problem man.
Yeah, they are pretty neat. I took a few more shots today, and I have to say, it does a damn good job at correcting even if the "object" moves. I took a picture of my sons cat and he moved his head towards me after about the 2nd of the 5 snaps and the picture looked absolutely normal. I was quite amazed by that.
Planning to play around some more when I am out and about. Spent this weekend inside relaxing lol.
I have tried HDR Camera+ and Pro HDR Camera and I like the Pro HDR better. Pro HDR gives you more control over saturation, contrast, brightness and exposure so you can make the pictures as realistic or a crazy HDR as you like.
it's just bumping up the contrast. i don't think it is actually taking two exposures or anything like that.

No, it does. When you take the picture (in slow mode 1) you can watch each exposure being taken. It takes a normal, an extreme light, a mild light, an extreme dark and a mild dark then computes.

Wow! This is nice. Never thought an app could make much improvement to photos taken as it depends on the hardware camera sensor. Thanks for recommending this app.
I like Pro HDR Camera better than this. More color / contrast options although less hdr-related options than HDR Camera+

IMO the results are worse.
HDR Camera+ is by far the best app on the market for taking stunning photos. While Pro HDR does allow you to tweak the settings a bit, HDR Camera+ blows it away with overall quality.

That's really nice man Cellphone cameras will always be crap because of the size limitations, but this goes to show that software will go a long way to rectify that issue!
Gonna look into this app further now.
Pro HDR vs HDR Camera+
Here is a shot I took using both programs so you can see the comparison. I am partial to the results of Pro HD but see for yourself.

Pro HD looks better to me, although both look better than stock i imagine. Could you add a stock image to compare to? Were they both taken on default app settings and if so, how much better can you make them look if you tweak them?
Thanks.
I use pro hdr... here is an example...
I know heavy effect!
Another Comparison
I reset both HDR apps to the default settings and took a picture using the built in standard camera app so you can compare all 3. The files are named by the app that took them so that's how you can tell them apart. The Pro HDR show looks a little blurry on the crane because it moved while taking the picture so ignore the slight blur.

Shocked at photo quality

OK so im coming from a long line of iPhones and after getting bored of iOS this is my first venture into Samsung. I took this photo at the club I work at last night and seriously, what is going on here? The flash pics were pretty crap too, finding it very hard to focus after pressing the shutter.

I also noticed the pictures weren't what I expected.
They tend to blur quite easily.
I'm hoping a software update will sort it.
It's a 13MP camera, you're either doing something wrong or your camera is bad.

I agree with the poster, ive had many phones and by far the note 3 has the worst photo quality ever, im really dissapointed for a ~750 euro device to have such a bad camera. 13MP looks nice in the specs but numbers is not everything.
To me it looks like there is some kind compression on the image, maybe the firmware has some kind of compression method to keep the camera up to speed for zero shutter lag.
Hope samsung will look into this and give us an update in the camera firmware.

Yes you are right, the bright and especialy daylight pictures are pretty nice, but when things get dark or far away they smudge out. You can see it happen in the bottom 2 pictures in that post, the last 2 are obviously lower quality than the flowers for example.

What do you expect? The camera has a 1/3" sensor, a FX SLR has ~28 times the sensor area. This means that you would need 28 times the light (or time) to shoot a photo with same quality.
This is not possible because in the conditions where your photo was shot you would need a tripod and long exposure (which is not useable on moving objects) to make a photo which has comparable quality like an outdoor picture!
Anyhow, I have the N3 for one day now and I am happy with it so far, especially with the better camera!

Well it does have to do with the megapixels because the more you have the less the typical blur will be visibly apparent as a result of movement, which seems to be the case here, whether that be movement by you or the subject.

It isnt blur, it's the denoise that samsung is using. This is a software issue, among other things obviously. Whether or not they fix it I have no idea.

Until manufacturers either quit trying to outdo each other with more megapixels on the same size sensor, lower the megapixels on the same size sensor (like HTC did with the One), or increase the sensor size (such as Apple just did with the 5s), low light photos are going to have more and more noise. The smaller the pixel, the less light it captures, which results in worse low light performance.

For the car stereo photo: The camera is metering for the bright screen. Try HDR, or using a flash. I'm currently on an ASOP rom so I can't recall if there is a way to change the metering mode, but try the others.

Sure you can: Center, Spot and Matrix.
For OP: Try Spot metering. You can also lock on the dashboard and then reframe on the radio display (you can lock exposure and focus, if I recall correctly, by holding the shutter button - but only if burst mode is disabled). But then you'll probably have the display overexposed.
OP I would agree with you, I'm far from impressed with the camera on this phone, I suppose some would say it's not the sort of phone for people who like taking photos and to choose a different phone. However coming from the Note 2, HTC One and Z1 all performed pretty well in lowlight conditions and were pretty quick at taking photos, this is pretty naff in lowlight even with the flash on as there seems to be too much of a delay with the shutter!
Today I took a couple of photo's in good light and I had to hold the phone still for like 3/4 secs otherwise my photo blurred like crazy! Either there is another setting I've turned on by mistake or its just this phone.
I'm glad I have a decent camera and don't really on this as my main camera....

My suggestion was based on the pictue he posted. With that same situation, I think this setting would produce better results if he doesnt prefer using flash.
If he wants to use flash, I would suggest a different setting.

Btw, the note 3's iso can go up to 1000 if its set to Auto. The quality at that iso level sucks even if theres enough ambient light.
Disagree about the camera, I have taken some superb shots with the note 3 , low light as well as daytime.

The ISO on my EOS 70D can go to 12800 (Nobody in their sane mind uses that). It produces pictures that look like something made with a 2001 VGA camera. :silly: The higher you set the ISO, the worse the noise is going to be. Just because it can doesn't mean it should

I agree that the note 3 camera aint so bad. I actually feel that it takes better shots than an SLR in daylight conditions. For medium to low light, thats when the note 3 starts to lose it edge. I almost always have to resort to using flash, and evenso, if the subjects are far like more than a meter away, the flash just wont cut it.
Dont get me wrong though, I love my note 3. Its not like I take a lot of photos in medium and low lights.

It seems that way because the camera on the Note 3 (and most smartphones) oversaturates the picture. Makes the colours look all bright and shiny, and people like that.
It's when you zoom in past 20% actual-size preview that you start seeing the difference. (Unless you use one of those cheap pointless SLR's that sell for 100-300 quid. Those actually do take worse pictures.)

Google Camera App oddities (resolved after firmware update!)

I've been testing out @Arnova8G2 's Google Camera App port (version 5.1.016_v1.4beta5 ) and except for the slow motion mode which crashes the app instantly, it actually works REALLY well on the Zenfone 4 Pro's back camera, despite not being tested for this phone. Doesn't see the second sensor, but that is fine.
HDR+ works flawlessly without any crashes.
Easily beats the photo quality of Asus' own camera app by far, which is a shame because the sensor of this phone delivers quite good quality, and since it has been marketed so specifically as a great camera-smartphone it is kinda strange to see that Asus did not put more work into it.
EDIT:
Innnnnnnnnnnteresting!
The latest firmware update (WW-14.2610.1711.35) lists camera performance improvements, and now after applying that, those odd binary data artifacts no longer appear when using the Google Camera App! Same settings otherwise. Good job Asus! :fingers-crossed::good:
So this is no longer valid:
There is one thing that is odd though, hence this thread.
On each of the HDR+ or HDR+ Enhanced mode pics, there is an odd ribbon of... binary data(?) on the side of the sensor that would point towards the bottom edge where the USB port sits.
If the HDR+ mode is disabled and just the plain regular photos are saved, it doesn't appear. It does also not show up on any files captured with the regular camera app of Asus.
It looks like this:

}
The pattern seems to vary. Here is a part of the same picture corner, across a couple of pics:
I tried fiddling with the settings of the app but I can't seem to get rid of this stuff. Any idea what this is?
Does this show up for other owners of this phone as well?

Hi damnaliens,
Thank you for your test.
As you know, the google camera app is on a higher version,so it's compatible with most devices and camera lenses.
Your test helped me a lot.
I am going to buy ZenFone 4 Pro(128GB/6GB).
Do you suggest that for me?

Yup that is the version of the phone I also got. I'm very happy with it overall, performance is nice, so far no problems, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you plan on getting it as well. :highfive:

I'm so excited than ZenFone 4 Pro(ZS551KL)
I'm an unofficial (official a little) ASUS Advertiser.
Nice Opinion Dear damnaliens.
I seems like IMX362 is better than IMX318!
Good luck.

Excuse me,
Is camera quality good in low light?
How is the portrait mode?
Is optical zoom lens good in daylight?
What's your given score to main(12MP)camera from 100?(for example 90/100)

For a smartphone camera, the performance in low light is satisfactory.
The portrait mode ... is a portrait mode. I feel this is mainly a software thing, so the sensor is not as important for this. I don't have any other phone to compare portrait modes against, my other phones are older and don't blur out the background. The font facing camera is good though.
The optical zoom lens is nice in daylight! In low indoor light it is not being used though, and even 2x zoom is done digitally. I wish there was a clearer indicator that this is the case, or at least a button so I can still use the more grainy zoom lens image. But again, software thing.
Lastly, hmmm. I think with the google camera app, the main 12MP camera can rival or beat the rating of the Pixel 2 phones, so something in the range of 95+/100 or higher. With the Asus app, the pictures look a bit worse because they're processed less intelligently. You can save raw images though so I feel it is not that important anyway. The camera hardware itself though is impressive, the autofocus is FAST!

Pixel 3a with not that good camera (selfie vs redmi note 7)

Today I received my first pixel, and I was so hypped about a real google camera, but I'm kinda disapointed, here is a selfie test from pixel 3a versus my old redmi note 7 with Gcam in it
The pixel its not badd, but the 200$ and older phone seems more detailed, I dont know, but for selfie, its not a real update. Is there a modded gcam that works better than the original one?

Here's my two cents:
The pixel front facing camera is not it's strong suit. It's main/rear camera, however, I will put it up against *any* camera on the market today. I use it for professional photography, shoots, high school senior pics, weddings, landscapes, etc. It's simply incredible.
I rate it 9.5/10 (I'd give it a 10, but of course, there's always room for improvement.)
The front camera, I'd give a 7/10. Mine has tons of noise, especially in low light settings. Probably arising from an auto ISO that is set too high. It's also pixelated to an extent.
What I would recommend is to try a couple of other apps that I use: 1) ProCam X (paid). 2)Manual Camera DSLR (paid). 3)Cymera
Or, use cstark27's gcam PX v4.3 --- it's a powerful gcam mod thats made specifically for the pixel phone. This camera allows you to fine tune at a level that you'll not ever find on the app store. If Google camera is a 9/10.. this version is a 12!!
Good luck. Let us know how it goes!

Hi, i'd like the xml config file for the PX too, if you have one. There are so many parameters in there, it would be nice to have a setting from someone with experience in photography.

The beauty of the PX camera is that it's pretty much plug and play. Without a single change in the lib patcher, it'll capture some amazing shots. This is because it's tuned for the pixel phone out of the box.
The only settings that I've tinkered with are the darken sky and noise.
But unfortunately, my pixel 3a bit the dust a few days ago. Water damage from sweat! Can you believe that sh!t?? I had a case on it, and was talking for over an hour while hiking. The sweat built up inside the case, and the phone began experiencing phantom touches all over the screen. I immediately powered it down. Placed in rice for 48 hours. Blew out with a hairdryer. Powered back on, and had an inoperable screen with rapid phantom touches. Within 5 minutes the screen started glitching out. I could no longer power it down. Nothing worked. And 30 minutes later it went black. Never has worked since.
So it looks like I have a dead Pixel 3a for sell lol. (Don't confuse this for an ad! It's a joke).

So you say quality is better than stock google camera out of the box? i think i will give it a try, thanks.
I have no root or magisk but i think this is only needed for the longer shutter nightshots, right?

I can't say with absolute certainty that it's "better" than the stock google camera. What I do know for certain though is that the ability to change and tweak multiple settings, creates a much better environment and gives you the potential to create better shots.
I have three different gcam versions on my phone. I use NGC's build, cstarks 4.5, and GreatnessBuild.
I have drastically different settings for each. NGC is tweaked for Portrait Style photos. Greatness is for high quality HDR shots. And CStark is for general use, but especially for astrophotography.
But let me be clear, I'm not saying that these versions are better for the uses that I use them for. I simply needed three versions, so that I could optimize them for specific uses.
I will say that the cstark 4.3 and 4.5, is absolutely without a doubt the best night sight and astrophotography version I have ever used. I highly recommend it.
But again, as far as any of these versions taking better shots out of the box as compared to the standard factory google camera.. I'm not so sure that they are. The fact is, the pixel 3a takes the best shots I've ever seen. I don't know what you could improve about it. The colors are perfect. Lightning is the best in the game. Fine Detail holds fast at up to 6-7x, and is fairly useable at up to 15-20x. (Another benefit of using some of these custom gcam builds is that it increases maximum zoom past the 7x factory preset. In fact, one goes up to 150x. I've personally taken ultra-long range shots at 30-40x and had them capable of making out exactly what I was looking at.)
I hope this info helps.
