So I SWEAR I saw this mentioned somewhere earlier today but after searching I can't seem to locate it.
As the title says. I have Automatic system updates turned OFF. Turned that off right after I got it unlocked and rooted.
Verizon Pixel XL NDE63P
Today I get a notification regarding Android 7.1 Update. I didn't tap on it, couldn't clear it. Was concerned that the update might auto install without my permission or something. Well that hasn't happened, and NOW the notification is gone. I don't want to update yet...
I was thinking that turning off automatic system updates would mean it wouldn't even check to know there was an update. Am I going to be living with a nag that comes back with a hair trigger update button. Had that on Samsungs in the past. Will make you crazy always having to tell it NO try tomorrow every day...
Just wanted to see if anyone had seen this behavior or if I was just loosing my marbles here.
Thanks!
Screwit, just sideloaded the update. Everything is good, unlocked, rooted, customer kernel etc...
OTA URL: https://android.googleapis.com/pack.../4a7b7e380ad4ce4dbf998f403d053e52d12b8a42.zip
Changes include:
- Google security patches 2017-10
- Security patch KRACK WPA2 vulnerability
- Improved performance and bug fixes
- Improved touch scrolling
- Fingerprint gesture enabled - swipe fingerprint for notifications
Update size: 74.8 MB
Yep, it's just popped on Twitter. ?
So... My phone does not yet see this OTA as available when I check for system updates (I'm on a Sprint carrier-locked device so it may take longer than you lucky unlocked folks), and I'm at work without my personal laptop right now so I can't push the update to my phone via ADB. Is there a way to force my phone to see the OTA sooner, or am I stuck waiting until I can get home and use ADB?
I just upgraded. Everything good so far.
Awesome! I've been longing for the fingerprint swipe gesture; downloading now!
All good here as well. Scrolling does seem smoother.
Use of the entire screen much better in almost all apps.
This was a good update with a clear improvement for me. I frequently use a crossword puzzle app and on this device I would have a difficult time selecting squares along the right edge of the display. After this update the squares are much easier to highlight. Not perfect but the improvement is noticeable. Between the latest updates and the Google camera app the Essential Phone is rapidly turning into a handheld I enjoy a great deal.
sideloaded, enabled gestures. seems to be running well. Wish Sprint phones would OTA when everyone else does, but as long as i can sideload, i'm happy

Just get a sim card from another carrier! Throw it an and you'll get update. Does not need to be alive sim. The phones are factory unlocked. As soon as it detects a sim from another carrier it checks with essential for the update. With a sprint or Telus sim it checks with the carrier.
So this new update, blocked out the notifcation bar for Google Now Launcher. =/
It was working fine before. Boo
Is anybody else getting random freezes/system ui crashes?

I'm getting some really bad ones. I never had anything like this before NMJ20D.
So far everything good here....
Updated on Sprint via sideload. All seems good, but I didn't really have any problems before this. Fingerprint gesture is pretty cool.
Yeah I'm getting quite a few crashes when I try to open apps. Back button seems.Pretty slow and gets stuck once and a while.
i had my first freeze on the previous build today. while trying to connect my BT headset while opening Pandora. the freezes i was having stopped when i updated. so far with todays build, no issues and ive been on my phone constantly since
OK...I've had this phone for a month and a half and today was the third software update notification I've gotten. REALLY? I've installed both the other updates, and I don't want to be forced to install any more. "I" want to decide when to update, not anyone else. I've turned off all notifications....how do I keep the phone from auto-updating? I've learned how to get to the developer options...turned off auto updates, but they still show up. Is there a way to REALLY turn them off, or am I at the mercy of AT&T and Samsung?
So last night, I must have received the TMob version of OOS 9.5.6, and it caused my entire phone reboot overnight. Unfortunately, this also prevented my alarm clock from going off in the morning! I definitely cannot have that happen again. I'd like to install the updates on my own schedule.
However, when I got into system update options, there's no setting to disable this? In developer options, there's a setting to disable automatic installation upon reboot, but that doesn't sound like the same thing. I've never encountered something like this, as every phone I've owned before this always allowed you to control how updates were received. Any clues?
Only thing I can think of is the first toggle in the screenshot I've attached.

Yep, that's the one I toggled. It sounds like it only prevents the installation upon reboot, and not something to actually stop it from rebooting. I'm unsure.
I believe that it will not download and update the phone until you go in to software updates and tap the download and update button.

It was like that on 6t as well. TMobile force installs even if you turn off automatic updates.
Alot of people were reporting using the phone then out of nowhere random reboot then "congratulations your software has been updated to whatever"

This is a major dealbreaker for me. I merely wanted the TMob version so that I could use the HD calling without issue, but I can't just have automatic updates going off when they feel like it.
I will have to convert to global version. Good thing I'm like a 20 year customer and the phone is completely paid for.
Before the last update UI One 5.0, I used to use Bixby routines to make the phone vibrate once when I received a notification that includes certain keywords. This routine used to work even when the phone is on mute. However, after the update, the phone does not “vibrate once”, unless it is Not on mute.
How to fix this?
I have received a 800 mb update, and the problem has been fixed.
