Android 9 Accessibility. Apps don't stay on. "Not working. Tap for info" - General Questions and Answers

The downloaded apps listed in my Accessibility menu keep malfunctioning after some time, particularly after the screen has been off for a while.
Usually all the apps listed under Accessibility are either On or Off. But in my case, the status message under each app says "Not working. Tap for info."
I have to turn it off and on again, clear cache.
I have a Screen Off app which I use to tap to turn off screen. It's annoying when it stops working.
Is there something in Pie that causes apps to malfunction with Accessibility permissions?

Accessibility automatically goes off for some apps

Hello guys.
As known, some apps work better with accessibility turned on. Usually when manually turned on, it stays so permanently but for some apps, it goes off after reboot.
But it keeps going off for me after a few hours. Apps like Tiles, Round Corners, Navbar & Sesame shortcuts.
Only Nova launcher stays on.
Any help on this issue?
Thanks
I have the same issue. I also have issues getting notifications. They'll all sync at once when I unlock the phone, or if I get on WiFi. Driving me nuts.
Turn off clear app (choose which app you would like to keep) when screen is off, this will solve the problem.

push notifications

Hey guys i have problems with notifications with all apps. Sometimes i receive notifications and sometimes not.
No one has this problem?
You have to take a number of measures in order to get notifications to work reliable:
1. Go to phone manager and set application in start apps on manual - and activate all switches
2. Type in "battery optimization" in settings and switch it off for the app
3. Open the app and then go to "recent apps" swipe the app down so a little lock appears above the app
4. Go to settings, then apps, then choose the app. Give all permissions and notifications
5. (Most important): go to settings - battery - further settings. Activate "always stay connected"
Notifications should work fine now. If not, uninstall the app, reinstall it and do steps 1 to 4 again.
BTW some expression I used may not be correct as I have set my phone language to German.

Any way to disable wake screen for notifications?

I tried to enable from Custom restrictions "Don't turn on the screen" and "Don't wake for notifications" with no luck. Is this a bug or bad user?

Always nice to answer to your own questions . Ambient display -> disable New Notifications. Oneplus logic escapes me.
Disable notifications
Go to the Settings app on android > Sound & Notifications > Scroll Down and App Notifications under notification section > Tap on App name installed on your mobile > Turn off the notification for the app.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, but I wanted just to disable wake screen for notifications not to disable notifications. Was a little confused initially since Oneplus seems to have two settings for the same thing. Got it in the end...
I have the same problem, but your solution does not work for me. As far as I can tell I have everything in ambient display turned off, but the screen still wakes up (to the normal lock screen). To confirm: THE TOGGLE SETTING "NEW NOTIFICATIONS" IS NOT HIGHLIGHTED, WHICH MEANS IT IS OFF. HOWEVER, THE SCREEN STILL WAKES UP.
In addition to that I even have "no notifications on lock screen" selected, which means my screen WAKES UP AND SHOWS NOTHING. It's distracting and useless at the same time. Very annoying.
I have now turned on "ambient display when I pick up the phone". This finally made my screen stop lighting up by itself, though of course now it does it when I pick it up. But at least it doesn't distract me while I'm working on my pc with my phone on the table.
I like my 7 Pro very much...and since this is my 2nd phone from OnePlus, I guess I am fairly satisfied with their implementation of Android Q. However, their way of setting up notifications is one of the worst things I have ever seen! It is convoluted, confusing, and counter intuitive.... not to mention just plain ridiculous. I hope they really get on the ball with the issue of notifications and their useless Horizon light very SOON because a cell phone without proper, accurate, notifications totally defeats the purpose of having a "portable" communications device.

I am having the same issue, how did you get the screen to stop waking up?
I'm trying to find a fix for this, as well. I have an app that wakes screen besides delivering the notification with/without sound. And now I realize I have another one. I also want to have those notifications on, but without waking my screen, just like most of the other apps' notifications. And this is not related to ambient display. In my case, I have stock Android, on a Pixel 3XL.
Thanks!

I need the same. Hate that anything other than myself can turn on the screen. Have had lots of annoying incidents due to this

Actually, there is a fix now, if you run Android 13. Under Apps->Special app access, there is a new option called 'Turn screen on'. I disallowed the annoying app and solved my issue.
I want to disable lock screen wake up for text messages and still no luck on S23. I went under special app access and disabled "Turn screen on" for the messages app (and others), and guess what? The screen still comes on when I get a text. HOLY ANNOYING.
You can turn Lock Screen Notifications completely off, but I dont want that. I want the audible notification to come in without turning the battery draining screen on, and when I tap the screen with my finger I want to see the app badge that tells me when app the notification came in on (signal, or messages, or fakebook, etc). If it's fakebook I may ignore it for example.

As I said in my post, I don't want to disable notifications, I want to disable lighting up the whole screen. The notification icon should show on the always on display without going full annoying brightness on the screen for 5 seconds. That's just dumb.

You might want to consider utilizing the Google Issue Tracker which is a tool used internally at Google to track bugs and feature requests during product development.
For Do Not Disturb - If you have the setting "Always show time and info" enabled (Settings > Display > Lock Screen > Always show time and info) your screen will display a dimly lit clock when the screen is locked, among some other status icons.
In the DND settings, if you check "Don't wake for notifications" and you get a new notification (text, ig, whatever the notification is), it will not show on the screen until you unlock the phone. It will just display that clock and you'll be unaware of the notification.
If you UNcheck "Don't wake for notifications", the lock screen with the large dimly lit clock will change to show the small icons for whatever the notification is.
If you do NOT have enabled the setting "Always show time and info" (Settings > Display > Lock Screen > Always show time and info), I imagine it would be the same behavior, except you would see a difference when you manually wake up (but don't unlock) your screen--you would either see that you got a text message or whatever the notification is, or you wouldn't until you fully unlock the screen.

Notification issue

No matter what settings I change, notifications don't work properly on this phone, Gmail doesn't work at all and other apps only work sometimes.
I've locked into memory, turned off freeze, turned off powerbsave
Is there anything else I can do?
Seems absolutely crazy to have paid almost there same money as a Samsung and yet having such fundamental issues.
Thanks
I'm with you here... Very hit and miss. Screen off and sometimes it notifies and sometimes it only notifies when you pick up the phone and wake it. Screen on and mostly it's ok but WhatsApp for example, when the screen is on it notifies but sometimes won't use the custom notification tone i set. Tried playing with the power saving settings and setting all the messaging and email apps to stay on in the background and same result.
Phone and text messages do seem ok tho.
Yeah it's so intermittent and such a large issue for such a expensive device
Never had this issue since I got the device

I have same issues. This morning I checked battery settings and some that I moved to always run in background, had moved back to smart, meaning phone could kill them. Not sure how they had moved

CAn you share your Gmail settings please?
<notification settings)
I'm confused about the smart power saver option.
If I turn 'Smart Power Saver' OFF, then a new option appears. 'Custom Power Saver'.
If I go into 'Custom Power Saver' and I tap an app they appear to all be set to 'Smart Background Running(recommended)'. Is that the same as leaving 'Smart Power Saver' ON?
So I could just turn 'Smart Background Running' to 'Run in Background' for the apps I want, but leave the other apps at the default and it would be the same as 'Custom Power Saver'?
Is that correct?

That's how I read it, yes... but the issue is that its still hit and miss for notifications, even with run in background selected
Think I may have made a break through. In battery settings, choose/turn on 'intelligent power saver'. Then back into Settings and 'App Management' and 'App List' you can then set individual power settings for each app required, and it appears that these settings then actually 'stick', rather than randomly changing back to 'Smart Background Running'

Where is the setting to turn on Ambient Display?

I really only want it to emulate an LED notification light while the screen is off. I've tried multiple 3rd party apps from the play store, but none of them work correctly, and when I looked for the Always-On-Display manually in System Settings, its not under Display or Lock Screen. Searching also comes up with nothing. Am I crazy? One of the selling points of this phone was AoD (like Pixel 4, and 3a before it) but I'm not finding it.
It took me a bit to find it on my wife's new 4a, but it's Settings/Display/Advanced/Lock screen display/Always on.
ETA...Ha! I never remember there's a search box at the top of Settings. I typed "always" into it and it immediately shows the "Always on" setting.
Thank you! This helped me track it down. Apparently the setting is hidden unless you have a lock screen set up, despite the fact that it works without a lock screen. That's also why it didn't appear in my search results. If you want an Always On Display but no lock, you have to enable Swipe to Unlock, enable the "always on" setting following your menu path, and then turn off Swipe to Unlock. Thanks Google ?
