About safety of unofficial images and software - General Questions and Answers

Background:
I have a couple of budget devices and one of them a mediatek tab. As everyone knows these don't get a lot of love. As my devices are getting older I was thinking of making some changes and software is hard to come by. I found a few unofficial recoveries and some rooting methods and was making a thread for these.
My question is:
I have made a thread for my Lenovo Tab 2 A7-20F here with links to various sources of info and software which I'm planning use on my device and report back but
How do I know if these are safe? They could be working but what I mean is in terms of data safety, trojans etc. because someone else might also use these. I don't want to later find out that these were not safe.
What is a better approach to work with such devices where little work has been done and very few people would be using them so interest level might be very low?
Once I collate all working software where do I put them up? Since the XDA thread might remain but lot of file links break as they are taken down if they are not used.
Thanks.

There is no way to know, you take your chances like the rest of us, unless someone has previously discovered something malicious about those files and made a note of it for everyone to see.

[GT-P6210][Guide][WIP] How to root / install custom firmware / destroy your GT+wifi

So, I suppose you -- like me -- opened this thread to find out how to take your brand new (or new to you) GT+wifi and take the power back from Samsung by rooting and installing custom firmware! Well... Here's the deal: this forum is a complete mess. The small number of guides are either difficult to follow or incompatible with one another. Links for downloads are mostly dead and everything is completely out of date. If you're like me this drives you crazy...
The best forums in XDA have become so because of a few people. Most importantly, of course, are the developers; without them this place wouldn't have a reason to exist. But almost as important as the developers are a small number of users who take up the task of helping other users by writing guides and instruction manuals, and answering questions. This is what the GT+ forum lacks.
So here's what I'm proposing to do. I'd like to create a wiki post that I'll update with guides and working links. I'll keep it up-to-date so that a newbie can open the thread, look at the TOP of the first post, and get their tablet working within a few hours. It will make the entire experience more satisfying both both users and developers. But I can't do it without your help: I don't know jack about this tab (just got it last week). So post your info below and I'll update soon.
Good one buddy. But I don't agree with you on the mess part. There is no much cfw because samsung does not want to release some code. So we have "only" optimized and cleaner versions of stock rom, and a heroically port of cm9 but without wifi.
And if you try to put a lot of links and information on first post, good luck. Noobs dont like to read, you will get 95% of posts of people asking how to root or other thing that someone answered 1 post above.
The idea of make mirrors of links is very welcome.

I suggest that someone instead creates an index with all the roms most important info, links etc. like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
I'd be able to do it, but a little help would be appreciated

whats next?

I'm running baseband version from 07-15-2011
and rom Bionix Reloaded v1.4.1
Not saying I dont like it but I dont see any new roms that I can try
I really dont know know how to what cm roms are besides the name. and no idea what port roms are.
no gingerbread roms have been updated or made since last year from what I can tell by the Ref guild listed on the front of Development and im not sure how to or if it is a good idea to upgrade to ICS
any advice?
Seems like you're new to modding, I highly suggest you stay with the ROM you're running if nothing is wrong (don't fix what's not broken).
If you decide to flash other stuff,PLEASE for the sake of everyone,READ READ and READ some more. Abuse Google to find out what cm7 stands for and other terms you don't know.
Don't assume
Yeah I've got a lot of problems with the phone (most are described on"Google" as problems with this model). And like my past phones changing the Rom changes/fixes the problem because good developers know how to fix problems. Yet by the list, nothing looks new and exciting. Sorry I've only dealt with roms and rooting along with minor other things.
I believe the benefit of a forum is to be correctly informed. Info on Google may not always be up to date and or correctly relate to you. That's why I ask questions (only an idiot acts without thinking) in a forum about my phone so people with the same phone can input not disregard. Searching on this site doesn't answer basic questions. Out of all my other phones I work on this site does how ever have topics that keep me informed vs having to go over pages looking for Rom updates.
If there was another forum that specialized in my phone and was as knowledgeable I would go there. But as far as I have found, most sites just use links/content from this one.

Also, don't use the reference guide, manually go into the development forum and look around.
The reference guide tends to be outdated.
Some developers also use rootzwiki as their forum, mainly faux, so be sure to check there too.

Crossing devices?

I'm interested to find out if it is possible to run a rom from another device on my Conquer 4G. I've looked at the specs on it, and they are nearly identical to that of the Galaxy S. Anyone know if that would be possible, or would I be better off just dropping my phone in the pool and bricking it that way?

"Nearly" isn't always good enough. It may work, but some features may cause it to freeze, or crash. Unless the components are virtually identical and even then, there may be issues relating to the product id's that are supported on one device but not the other. Someone here with specific knowledge of the devices in question may find this post and give more useful info.

The ROM could be ported over to your device fairly easily.

Any guides or information on how I might go about doing this? I'm totally a noob at doing roms, and I would really like to learn. There really aren't many roms for my phone (Conquer 4G), so I'd love to be able to adapt some of the roms from other devices for use with my phone.

Choosing which ROM to port is part of the same problem I'm having with my Zenithink tablet. As for info on porting, there's no shortage of that on xda, but I haven't had much luck with the search engine here. Best to Google the site.
ie; Google search, "porting rom site:forum.xda-developers.com"
without the double quotations marks.
I'd dig through my links to help out, but I haven't enough brownie points yet to post links on here.

I found one link here on the site, but I got confused on it rather quickly. I'm going to have to read it and make sure to ask questions where applicable because there are alot of really nice roms out there for other phones (The Galaxy S for instance) that I would love to try with my phone.

Questions regarding clone phone

Hi everybody,
hopefully I am at the right place here to ask these questions. If not please direct me to the appropriate sub forum.
Currently I have a Chines Clone Phone (maybe iphone 7 plus) here available - looking for several things. It seems the installed Android is working at least for the majority of main functions but it is far from being complete. Now I fear that these kind of phone and system is not very reliable or safe (bloatware, spyware and other sniffing stuff below surface or whatsoever). So my question is: Are these phones and their OSes are generally considered to be safely usable? Or does user need to fear to be infected, spied or similar?
So far I tried to Root the phone and to install custom recovery and custom ROM without any success. The only information I got can be seen in the attached screenshot.
Currently I am checking the methods and files proposed here and here. Does anybody know whethere these are reliable and can be trusted?
Unfortunately I could not find much information at XDA so far - also my clone phone identifying thread here at XDA did not provide much help so far.
Thanks in advance for your support!
Bye

XDA has a thread here for cloned devices but unfortunately you have an iPhone clone. This website does not deal with iPhone or iPhone clones(regardless of whether they are android based or not). You'll have to find somewhere else to get your answer.

Ok, thank you - will try to do so.
Then I will reduce my initial questions to the page and contents regarding MediaTek android systems I mentioned here and here.
Does anybody have any experiences with this stuff/site? Or should I open another thread for this question?
Bye

That site is all about getting paid for ads, the question isn't whether the guide can be trusted, it's a question of whether the files that are linked can be trusted, those files are in other places and just linked in that guide, they probably were not built/developed by whoever wrote the guide. Some of those files may have originated here at XDA are only linked in that guide to bring you here to download.

Discussion Thread for G7 Root on Other Models (Just a discussion, not actual root)

So development for root on other models seems to be slow, because of this, I wanted to start this thread in where we can possibly get developers that have come up with root methods for other LG phones in the past. Maybe we can start up a bounty thread or even donate directly to a developer to get them a G7 who is interested in working on this phone (just like when we donated to Cstark27 for GCAM development on our phones). What does everyone else think? Hopefully we can get some developers on board!
Personally, I have a G710PM (Sprint Model) and would test out methods if a developer has one, but if it has the chance to brick my phone I would back down as this is my only phone and can't risk that.

Development is slow give it time there's multiple devs working on everything behind the scenes, believe me I want nothing more than to root this thing (I'm carrying around a rooted phone along with my G7 just for a few things) but I'm being patient and optimistic. It will get here eventually

I had no idea there was development behind the scenes, I hope this post didn't come off as rude to those working behind the scenes. Can't wait to see what the future holds for this phone!

No not at all, but there's multiple discord channels for the devs working on everything if you read around the forums you will see what's going on. Disclaimer I am not a dev I'm just relaying what I'm reading on all of the forums.
