Carrier Aggregation - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

What network in the US will take advantage of the only CA setup the 3a has to offer? It uses only 3xCA, DL 4x2/2x2 MIMO, or Cat 11 I guess? I've been all over Reddit and on the phone with all carriers all day and most don't know what the f*** they're talking about. Please help.

Nobody? Does the 3a show LTE+ for anyone or just the LTE symbol?

Just LTE. No +. Been like that since betas. I know on T-mobile I was getting 2x2 mimo. Network Signal guru app doesn't work on Android 10. So I can't see if aggregation is working. I do see HD calling is working
Edit:I am supposed to have 4x4 now. Anyone know of any apps that can test carrier aggregation?

How do you get 4x4 MIMO? I thought the 3a wasn't capable?

T-mobile is supposed to be able to provide 4x4 MIMO. That's all I'm saying. We don't know if we are getting any carrier aggregation on Android 10. I don't know any way to test it

So it's not a hardware thing? As far as I knew the 3a isn't capable of 4x4 MIMO

3a is 2x2 and 4x2 mimo. That's what the hardware can handle. Your carrier is a different story. T-mobile can output 4x4 MIMO. Which on the 3a it will default to what the phone and towers can do. My phone and T-mobile can both handle 4x4. But without the LTE+ and a app like Network Signal Guru we have no idea what we're getting

You guys don't even know what carrier aggregation is? It depends on your phone, carrier and the tower you're connected too. We are panicked because we don't see the LTE+ on Android 10. We have know way to objectively know what's happening at any giving moment. You have to have Network Signal Guru rooted, and be downloading something and check the app for what's happening at that second in time. Good luck

Network Signal Guru was updated on the 11th to work on Android 10 now.

Notice on the tower I'm on now, I only had 2x CA

Haven't seen LTE+ since running Android 10 and all the betas. But I can assure you objectively that CA is working

Sideloaded Update TMobile

Just curious about everyone's thoughts on how it's running on TMO specifically.
I've got band 12, so I'm happy
Send to be running smooth, love the permissions manager, and the adoptable storage
Installed 6.0 on tmobile when soak test came out. Been running smoothly and have band 12 and VoLTE all working. I'm really not sure why they holding the update for Tmobile..
Slow data speed on band 12

I'm getting 9.94 Mbps on T-Mobile band 12 I'm in south Florida if that makes a difference.
Sideloaded update today, on TMO in central VA, no issues thus far. Can't confirm band 12, not around here yet from what I've seen.

WiFi Calling and VOLTE are two different things. WiFi calling does not appear to be available at this time, and the VOLTE setting was default to "on" for me... it is in Settings/More/Cellular Networks

That's not surprising. Band 12 is primarily for coverage rather than for capacity. In most (all?) places, T-Mobile has more spectrum available for LTE on the AWS (Band 4) side, so it will usually be faster. But AWS, being a higher frequency, doesn't have as good building penetration or spatial reach as Band 12, so you'll get coverage where you wouldn't with Band 4.
Anyone have trouble sending or receiving mms with hangouts?

There's a hidden WiFi Calling setting that some apps, like Nova Launcher, can launch. The on/off switch moves when you tap it but it's not hooked up to anything on T-Mo

Exynos in the US?

Has anyone gotten an Exynos S7 to work in the US with any of our carriers?
I'm so desperate for a rooted S7 Edge that I'm ready to change carriers if I have to. :crying:
It probably will work but it won't work well, especially with T-Mobile (no band 12 or VoLTE). Just wait m8

T-Mobile has to certify and allow the phone to work on band 12 or else it won't be able to make 911 calls. They've verified the US S7 but I don't think they verified the international version.

it's frustrating that others have said recently that band 12 is NOT supported. what about wifi calling?
Hi there !
I belive that WIFI calling and the reduced Internet speed while on a phone call, are the two things that are different on the Exynos. Tell me how to check and make sure WiFi doea not work and I will try for you. I have tested the second one, and indeed the Internet speed is way reduced when talking on phone. Depending where you are, it is either H+ or 3G.
Hope that helps !

i believe there should be a setting for wifi calling within the "more connection settings". if it's not showing within the settings, then it's not supported.
as for band 12, how reliable is that app you used? a lot of people have mentioned that band 12 is not supported on the exynos model, so i'm really curious how yours has it.
thanks!
OK, there is no WiFi calling setting under there.
As for how reliable the App is, I have no idea, sorry. I searched and found it was mentioned in XDA for checking this kind of settings/capabilities. I will take a screen capture of it once I am in a building and it is showing the band used. My understanding is that LTE Band 12 is particularly good and improves signal inside buildings.

The Internattional version does support band 12. and it works, however for VoLTE you have to find a firmware that has it which is hard. the Czech t-mobile firmware has VoLTE but no WiFi calling
The "F" international version also has Band 17 for AT&T
why do people who DON'T have the phone act like they know what they are talking about.
Works fine on T-Mo, and ATT. you just miss out on some of the bands, and also carrier features like VoLTE.
my 930F works fine on Tmo. and it'll work fine on ATT as well.

New Note 20 Ultra N986U1 / No 5G

Picked up the unlocked version and activate with Verizon 5G sim here in Honolulu HI. Verizon coverage map states my area and pretty much the entire island is covered for 5G nationwide.
I have full LTE+ showing on my phone but after tshoot with Verizon for the last few hours and driving around a couple miles..my indicator has not changed at all to 5G.
Am i interpreting the coverage map wrong when it says all of the island is on 5G nationwide, meaning to me, i should see the 5G network on my phone?
Since i unboxed this device yesterday, it only pulled down one update and nothing new is showing as far as software updates.
Powered off the device a few times along with a network reset and still no 5G..
So far I've found the 5G feature to be the most overhyped, most under developed feature I've seen that was this hyped up in a long while. For the most part at the moment, i find it that unless you're standing on a block containing a 5mm 5G cell tower, 5G as of right now is pretty sparse and mostly useless.

Choose the att csc and choose the option to only change the network code.

You can also enable bands and DSS for verizon nationwide coverage through the service mode menus. I have a n20 ultra with U1 firmware on verizon csc with 5G working.

I attached screenshots of the menus I changed to enable 5G. The DSS menu enables 5G DSS, the LTE band menu enables all the LTE bands and the NR prune menu enables all the 5G bands. I would restore the VZW csc before making any changes. Changing the csc resets any service mode changes made manually. It will also work under any of the csc's selected, but then other things like wifi calling and visual voice-mail are configured for that carrier and don't work right. Also, carrier aggregation combos for lte and 5g produce slower data speeds if you have sales and network codes mismatched to the SIM thats being used.

Hi,
I tried multiple CSCs with my SM-N986B/DS and I couldn't use 5G, although I do have an indication in the Status bar (I'm not sure if this a bug, but it doesn't look like the speed was increased or the NR bands are in-use.)
I've wondered if anyone here was able to connect to a 5G network using his SM-N986B/DS?
If so - please write which country, carrier, CSC and Version are you using?
It will help me to diagnose the problem and understand where does the 5G restriction is being done.
Thank you very much.

I've had the exynos version for about 3 weeks a with tmobile. Haven't connected at 5G at all, mobile says it haS TO BE MY PHONE. 4G is working great but haven't connected LTE even once either..
@redeyedog :
are you using it on t-mobile US ? how is your data service ? 4G on Note exynos phones is same as LTE. i've been using note 8 duos exynos on t-mobile US since 2018, it's struggling & no data service in area where band 71 deployed. i read n20 exynos doesn't have band 71 either but i would like to hear your experience.

Question Usa carrier support

I've asked this question before and I can't find anything.
Can anybody confirm the 0/B/E versions to work on TMobile or att or mvnos of them?
If someone wants to be so kindid appreciate it. Really wanting to buy one for root.
if you use AT&T, don't buy any international models because they will block your sim. You may call them to unlock it but the sim will be blocked again after a couple days. The reason is AT&T has a list of supported models and international phones are not on their list.
T-Mobile doesn't have such a horrible thing. So yeah, it works.
Oh, and I am using 908E/DS on T-Mobile network.

No. I don't expect an international phone to be fully working on a US carrier network such as TMO or ATT due to missing bands. If I have to choose between slower connection and the ability to root, I'd choose the latter one. I chose TMO because it works, white ATT not working at all.
There are wifi networks available almost everywhere I go nowadays. In case there is none, usually when I was driving, 4G/LTE always available and that's good enough.

So to confirm, no signal at all for att/cricket?
What about h20wireless? Redpocket mobile?
What site to use to check compatibility? I'll take slower speeds
To confirm:
1. AT&T blocks your sim right away. Your phone turns into a small tablet. That's it. Nothing you can do about it. I don't bother with smaller companies. I only go for the big boys.
2. T-Mobile will give you slower speed and freedom of root. This comes from my experience. Very little chance I need to use my plan's data. I can't tell the speed is slower at all. As far as carrier's features, I don't use any of them, but I think you can still have them if you change it to proper CSC.
Google search your model then you will find what bands your model support. Then Google search your choice of carrier to see what bands they have. Google is your friend.
Not just slower speed. Theres some areas that band 71 would be required to even get service at all in rural areas. Like just 5 min from my house if you have T-Mobile and your phone doesnt have band 71 no service.

All depends on area. It's still missing band 71 and N71 5G. I personally couldn't as it would make my phone useless in areas I frequent

But you could get the 4G LTE tho at least right? I have a 5G phone and i only get LTE speeds which is fine but the carrier doesn't offer 5G.

In the end, as @hyelton just said, it all depends on your area, your luck and how you would use your phone... There is no definite answer to the op's question until he figures it out himself. It works for me and I am happy with what I got but that may not apply to everyone else... If the op decides to roll the dice for a chance to get a phone that he can have total freedom over it he can go for it. Otherwise, just buy the one on Samsung website ending with U models and have all of his worries put away. Honestly, I didn't think about any of that when I placed my order.
My unlocked 908U1 on t-mobile work perfectly, supported band25 with 130-180mbps speeds on LTE.
ps: 5G is totally disabled as it switching every 5 seconds between 4G\5G networks

My OP was based on the international versions because I absolutely have to have root. I have not owned a phone that I could not have root capabilities in over 10 years.
I don't care so much about 5G I just want to have a phone that functions on a US carrier from overseas. Maybe it got lost in translation but I just want to know what carriers people have and if anybody has the carriers that I mentioned with confirmation or denial of service.
Specifically the carriers on most questioned about are H2O wireless and red pocket. I'm not very Google friendly and so I'm not familiar with the bands I'm used to just buying a phone and it working as intended for my purposes.
^^^ You're overthinking it. Just pull up the bandwidths for the carrier you're looking to utilize and go from there. As mentioned you're better served by going for one of the major carriers and maybe their prepaid services. Remember major carriers prioritize their post paid plans first for their optimum network traffic followed by their own respective prepaid plans and finally the MVNOs. I would stay away from the MVNOs in your scenario if you're importing a handset not configured for the U.S to begin it and degrading it further by using an MVNO.
