I've seen that comparison and I didn't find any big difference so I'm asking the experts here
From what I read the z3 has a brighter screen with better viewing angles, better battery life, smaller form factor and a slightly better chipset with the 801 versus 800.. With that said I'm patiently waiting for the T Mobile version to come out
Z2 is using Snapdragon 801, not 800.

Z3 has the same screen as Z2
I'm in the same boat as the OP here. Hope someone posts a comparison between the z2 and z3 with real world usage.
Well,
Z2 is cheaper
Z2 has more development (rootable, etc)
Z3 has brigher screen
Z3 should have a (marginally better) camera
Z3 is ergonomically better (personal though, but rounder, more compact)
Z3 has better battery life
Z3 is not rootable without unlocking (which results in issues on its own) yet, but should be in time
All in all, Z3>Z2 but only if you have an issue with spending more money I'd say go for the Z2... In specs they are almost the same with a slight edge to the Z3

Thanks for the infos
I have no problem in sending more money but it seems there is only small difference to pay an addition $200 :silly:

Hehe, well... that's personal of course. In that case, go with the Z2... Excellent phone
For me (had a Z1) the Z3 was an actual worthwhile upgrade while the Z2 wasn't. You know you pay top prices when you buy new models, either wait a bit and go for the Z3 when the price went down a bit or go for the Z2 now. It is indeed very similar.

battery life and build quality are two main factors i got hte z3 over z2. Plus i got a decent deal transferring my number to t-mobile here in Poland. Yesterday i spent a good days worth of internet browsing, watching vids online emails, calls and other stuff and at the end of the day still have 45% left.
I had this conversation with my friend about this, as he's thinking about the z2 or z3 and there isn't much different. They must of tweaked with the hardware or processor as battery life is great.

Went from a Z2 to Z3. Wife still has Z2 so I can compare side-by-side.
Battery life: Z2 was already pretty good; doesn't seem to be that much of a big difference
Display: Z3 seems a bit brighter on maximum
Processor: Z2 and Z3 are both snappy; I can't say I notice a huge difference.
Z3: Did have some black screen crash happen to me a few times. Seems to have been bluetooth related as it happened when I was trying to pair some devices.
By biggest issue I have is that the Z3 camera doesn't seem as good as the Z2 in less than bright light. Colours seem washed out or perhaps the a bit overexposed. Not as sharp or contrasty as Z2. It's almost like there is some lens flare to the z3. Also Z3's white balance seems not as good. This has been my biggest disappointment but I'm hopeful that this is software not hardware. Maybe it's because the higher ISO in low light is doing weird things.
I'll see if I can put a picture up with z3 and z3 side by side.
Regards,
Ken

I'm in the same boat. I was all set to upgrade from my Galaxy S3 to the Z3 today. When I got down to the store turns out my wireless provider has changed the pricing on the Z2. The Z3 (16GB) is $180 on a two year contract. The Z2 is now $0 on a two year contract. Not sure that the Z3 is worth $180 over the Z2.
Now I'm not sure what to do.

The Z3 is a minor improvement: Thinner, much brighter max brightness, little better battery life, slightly better speakers. Is it worth $180 thats up to you. The Z3 on TMO is 32GB which carrier are you on?
I'm in Canada with Sasktel.
Go for the Z2 I guess $180 savings is a lot, especially since they are fairly close overall.
I need a replacement phone right now and I struggle between those two. I gernarly prefer HTC becouse of the design, sense, and the community support. How ever Z3 is around the price,6 month newer and has higher specs. Help me to make a decision please!
Z3 has 3gb of ram. Wuyh lollipop coming that eats a lotof ram, yoy will really need that quantity ti be futur proof. Htc m8 has only 2.
Plus z3 has vetter camera 20.3 MP unlike the 4 MP camera if HTC. The inly main advantage if thehtc is its design. But personelly I don't find the z3 any less beautifu.
Last but notleast, the epic battery of the z3 3100 mah.

But what about this loosing DRM crap that Sony annoys you with? And also I am concerned about updates since Sony pushes out 2 phones a year I am worried they will forget about it soon. M8 has a google play edition so their is at least always that.
Actually because Sony only produces a smaller amount of products they are better and quicker to release with the only exception being GPEs, all being equal I would take the Z3 over the M8 hands down as with lollipops new raw format for images the DRM keys for Sony's special camera won't really matter.
One last thing and my only gripe with the Z3 is the button placement is awkward (physical buttons) they are low and geared towards one hand use but it took me a long while to adjust... Go hold one to see what I'm talking about.
switch from the m8 2 months ago and havent looked back. the z3 is a better phone in many aspects, its faster, has a much superior camera, bigger screen, it lays flat on the table, its easy to grip and doesnt slide from your hand...
I do wish it had an IR blaster and was easier to root but still I am willing to live with this. The speakers are not as good as the m8 but still really good, especially being waterproof. The Z3 is also about the same size as the m8 in terms of width and height but is much thinnery and doesnt have the awkward curve at the back and slippery surface.
Don't worry about updates for the z3. it will likely be the same next year as it is this year.

"We’ll be making Sony Mobile’s Android “L” upgrade available for the entire premium Z series*: including Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition devices will be first up – we’ll be back with more details on that soon.
We’ll start the upgrade at beginning of 2015 for the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series – continuing thereafter for all remaining devices above."
If you like Sense, you may need to get used to Sony's take on Android. In the interest of full disclosure, I've owned 3 Sonys (T, Z1 Compact and now a Z3), and I love their UI. Anyway, my daughter had an HTC M7, which died recently so she got my Z1c... but that is the second bad experience I've had with HTC.
Stamina mode with Sony is as good as it gets for saving the battery.
For the build quality, you might find them similar. I always find Sony's to be very good.
For the Camera (DRM issue), there is a thread in here where someone tested the low light quality (I guess that's what most the fuss is about) and said there was hardly a difference. I can't speak to the change in quality myself.
Personally, if camera is not a big deal I think The M8 is better.

Having owned both I have to say that both are excellent phones.
I am very hesitant to put either of the phones over other one. First when I changed from M8 I just hated how Z3 UI looked, too big icons etc. I am now used to this and I find that especially battery is much better on Z3 and this really important.
I hope that more manufacturers start to pay attention to the battery life over how the phones perform. Nexus 6 is a good example. I couldn't care less how much they score on the benchmark tests if the battery is dead by afternoon.
First up, I admit that I don't own the M* but I have tried it in the hand borrowed from a friend. It lacked the 'love at first sight' effect for me.
The Z3 is a much better looking device, more symmetry, more balanced, flat on a surface, razor thin with a brilliant battery to tow. It really is the only device that can make iOS users turn their heads. Also, if you are a brand conscious guy/gal then Sony commands a kind of respect only bested or matched by Apple. The thing is waterproof as well. Has more RAM for better multitasking, brighter display with cool enhancements in gallery and video like x reality boosting. The display can go darker too for reading at night. The camera will show more detail, better for zooming in, cropping, throwing to a large high res display and for a more overall positive accumulated effect. The hardware button is a great addition esp for underwater shots and quick firing the camera from sleep. The low light capability is currently next to none amongst flagships (near dark scenarios). The only gripe I have with the cam is that HTC and iPhones snap images faster, making the user experience more effortless. Magnetic charging is just a bonus. Did I say the battery is really good? Finally, the M9 may debut so getting an M8 may lose novelty sooner than a Z3. Although the Z4 may or may not be round the corner too.
TLDR? The Z3 hands down. No competition.

I should point out that M8 was released before Z2 even came out. I know it because I had pre-ordered Z2 originally but since I couldn't wait I went and bought M8 from the shop.
So M8 novelty has already been much longer there than it was with Z2.
I also disagree about the design. Z3 is gorgeous, but M8 is even more beautiful.

M8 announcement: 25/3/14
Z2 announcement: 24/2/14
So your point is?
Let's be honest here. You like the M8, buy the M8. You like Sony, get the Sony. Pointless to argue.

I thought that Nokia already taught you that announcement and availability are two different things. M8 was able to purchase in April, Z2 came in May.

Seeing as how XZ is the new 2016 flagship. Is it worth upgrading? Specs wise, it isn't really worth. Just better front facing camera, rear camera and a better processor from what I saw unless I missed something. But design wise, I really like it. Supposedly some of the 2017 Xperia leaks I've seen sport the exact design from the XZ. Should I upgrade or wait out until the end of the year for their high end device?
I have Z5 regular and I have same speculations. The camera is better cause has full manual mode, but picture quality?I am afraid that isnt much better than Z5.
It left only chipset, design and maybe longer battery hold.
I am not smart what to do...

I prefer old design cuz it's more scratch resist than new material. I think u should stay tuned with news, see what if the 2017 devices could be more or not then decide, it's just a month ahead. BTW, XZ price is still not down in VN Store yet.
As nougat takes up approximately 50% of the XZ's memory which can't be rooted without unlocking the bootloader, I'd suggesting holding back for three months to see what is released generally. Developer support and third party accessory support are limited for this model, and you'll have difficulty finding a decent case or tempered glass that bonds fully to the curved edge. Double tap to wake remains an issue, and charging is weak and actually depletes if you're using the phone at the same time, as a wireless hotspot for example. It's a stunning phone, but there are issues......
not point tbh, they are just too similar.

What make you disappointed in Z5 and why you didn't satisfy with Moto Z?
Make it clear why so others can help to tell in your place.
The Xperia XZ is a good smartphone, most important thing is the stable & close to stock Android Sony UI, with fast OS updates.
I have used so many smartphones, but Sony is really one of the best.

Well had black z5 and left it in my back pocket and when I went to my car forgot about it and when I sat I heard a crack and when I noticed it was the phone took it it was all broken with little bent in the middle !! Bought then white one and left it on the table and when I got a call it moved till felt down and broke down !
So bought z5 premium with the thought of Netflix 4k and youtube 4k but nothing screen brightness under sun was bad and camera wasn't all what I expected !!!
So went to Samsung s7 and hate all the junk and so many options that mostly u never use it and from time to time it get some slow done for a sec !
The only thing I loved about it the camera was great !
So went to moto z and only thing hate it after buying it putting it side by side with iPhone HTC and Samsung it was ugly and looks like a 200$ phone , I know there is no perfect phone I love Sony phones so think buying the Xz but reviews didnt help camera sucks as they say it's not perfect in anything screen still FHD like Sony is Stuck in time !!! It looks like Z5 with a better design and new processor . So what I was wondering is it really worth buying it

Xz is really better than z5 premium.Better speed, battery life, screen quality, camera quality (not only for manual comands ,quaity is also really better on auto. Every shoots are fantastic and night shoots are on different planet compared to z5 series...really fantastic). Z5 premium have updates i think only with nougat 7.0 and 7.1.1. Xz also android 8 and 9 i think. In the end of the year z5 premium probably leave the official support and there you should buy the new xperia z5 premium is a fantastic phone. Xz is really better. But at end 2017 Sony announce his powerful flagship. and it will be a really better phone than xz
Don't know if I can add a YouTube link
But this is what bother me every review I see is negative I don't know if the phone is that bad or the reviews just want to make it show bad !
Here in Brasil it's not on shelves yet only sold online so there is no way to test it yet ! And it's not cheep at all it's around 1050$
So I need a light from ppl here in the XDA
Thanks for all support
Sony is about to announce new phones at MWC on February 27...I'd wait.
edit: Not to say the XZ isn't great, I love mine. Just saying though, new phones in a month. Might be worth waiting to see what they announce.

I have the XZ, it is good phone with best quality screen under direct sun, yes the Samsung S7 edge camera is much better, but in the end it is a smartphone not a camera & with playing with manual mode you can get better result from XZ.
before the XZ I used the HTC 10 which it does have QHD screen !
but if you compare the HTC 10 QHD screen with the FHD Xperia XZ screen in normal indoor light or under direct sun the winner will be for sure the Xperia XZ.
XZ screen is so bright and clear indoor and under direct sun even with polarized sun glasses where you will suffer with other smartphones, but with the XZ it is really a hero.
any one can try that, I felt disappointed from using HTC 10 SPECIALLY UNDER DIRECT SUN with polarized sun glasses, so I decided to get Sony Xperia XZ.
all in all XZ is a good smartphone with good battery life & screen quality, plus the most cool thing I like it about the XZ is the Qnovo charging thing where the battery can learn from your daily charging timing, so this Qnovo thing will stop over charging battery if for example you charge your smartphone over night.
If you are a Sony guy get the XZ, it is such a cool smartphone.

So far, i didn't try Z5 Premium but did use Z1 and tried Z3 of my friend. By stats, Z5 Pre and XZ are just the same. By design, the new material is nice, beautiful, mostly symmetry, more than Z5 Pre, even few time i confused then hold it upside down. But It did not bring the good feeling and high grade feeling (both by viewing and holding) like Z lines, also less scratch resistant. Also in review, its back is easy to be destroy by hard metal.
For gaming, and perhaps clip playing too if you hold XZ, the border is not much rounded, make it feed bad for your hand's palm after playing game for a long time. Battery is not so good, fixed much by Nougat update, but still. The reduced resolution didn't make it better, but I don't like larger resolution either, my I cant' see much differences.
For broken and bend problems, I didn't drop my XZ so i can't tell, but my old Z1 drop many times without any problems, just scratch appear in every corner after times. Then how could your old phone became broken so easily?
At all, I'm a little reget that I should try Z5 Pre before buying XZ, that's it.

The new XZ2 compact was just announced at MWC. How is 5 inch screen now considered compact? The phone isn't that much bigger than Xz1 compact, but the reachability of corners on the screen is still going to be difficult.
I for one hate it. All the good things about the Xperia compact are gone. First of all, it's not a compact phone, just modest in size (almost like Samsung s8). And the awesome angular design is gone. That was unique nowadays - everybody makes rounded phones. I loved Sony's monolith design. And the fingerprint on power is also gone. Replaced by what everyone else has.
The only good thing is that it's as powerful as regular flagships, but then, it's almost as big as other flagships, so what's the point.
Today's very unfortunate. I hope my Xz1 compact does not die and keeps getting updates.
Agreed. And the worst rumor is that it won't have a headphone jack. That just sucks!
6mm taller, 1mm wider, rear fingerprint instead of side (best placement), no 3.5mm, 18:9 instead of 16:9, no thanks.
Best thing about the XZ2C is that now the XZ1C's price will probably drop
Was disappointed when i heard 5 inch for a "compact". I fear this will mark the end of the true Compact (sub 5 inch) phone.
Perhaps my XZ1C will be the last compact I own.
That's exactly what I'm thinking. And that would mean, the last Sony phone I'll purchase. Too bad, loved the battery life on these phones. My only hope now is that the pixel phone at the end of the year does not increase it's screen size and reduces bezel like pixel2xl, maybe then it'll be manageable.
Even if you cut all bezels from a 6" phone, it still remains with a 6" screen?
Anyway, it's funny how compact is now perfect for guys with normal hands.

Pretty much this. I already own an XZ1 Compact and if Sony continues on their current craptastic path I will buy another XZ1 Compact when my current one dies out.
If I wanted a 5" phone there are many other options out there that are well under the 700 dollar price point. And if I wanted a phone that looked like an HTC, I would buy an HTC.
Trivia: it was htc to "copy" sony (if really any). Look at "xperia P".
Also, I'm curios to know these [new] 5" phones. I'd sell my ass if they were any higher than the low mid-end.
i think a 5" screen can be considered a compact phone nowadays, with all these new *****ng big phones being released, also considering it has virtual buttons that steal screen space. 4.6" and virtual buttons is little too small for me.. still.. the best would have been same dimensions and design of the xz1 I agree, with just less bezels and 5" screen! (really don't care if it had to be 16:9..)
plus, same thickness as xz1, or if you increase it, put a bigger battery!
i too liked more lateral FPS, but being on the back (and always on, so don't need dt2w to wake phone) i can leave with it.
also missing jack is not a good thing, but again not a big deal for me, as long as they ship the phone with the dual adapter, while in the office can both charge phone and use wired headphones for calls (out of office, if i use headphones, i already use bt ones).
i hate those damned curved panels though, making it almost impossible to find good tempered glass that perfectly fit... but better than Samsung style edge screens at least....
still it is a flagship in pretty compact shell, a pure rarity today, so may get one, if camera is really improved (especially low light) also considering with the preorder offer i could get nice wireless headphones i could sell, so final purchasing price for the compact one could be around 400€... not bad for a just released flagship!
i just really miss old good fm radio... but find me a small flagship with it..
I'm also tempted by the pixel 2 (great camera, stock android, updates) but it is bigger and those useless huge bezels.. plus it would still be more expensive..
...and i don't rely too much in new pixels.. I'm pretty sure new smaller pixel, if it will come, will have same dimensions as current pixel 2, but with bigger screen (so even more difficult to reach angles with one hand mode usage) and probably with that awful notch..? no thank you!
I prefer all the life more thickness, rear FPS, missing jack rather than having that damned notch! shame on all those who are copying apple.. even that pure sh*t new design! my god..
btw.. only sure thing is that for us liking nice portable phones is just becoming a real nightmare finding a new phone to "upgrade" to..
...and sorry for the long post.. just needed to share my frustrations..
The saddest news of all with the 5 inch screen is that the Android compact is officially dead. I had to move to the iPhone when the SE came out to keep my compact flagship a reality because my xperia compact cameras sucked, I moved to the iphone 7 and 8 after, and now they are killing the sub 5 inch iPhone for all 6+ inch iPhones this year. iPhone 8 will be the last true compact flagship ever made most likely. COMPACT PHONES ARE OFFICIALLY DEAD.

so you are saying the iphone 8 is the last true compact flagship, while the XZ2 is even smaller than the iphone 8?
it is just thicker, but I prefer a shorter phone rather than taller but thinner...
not to mention the iphone 8 is bigger but with smaller screen... lol if I think we all (me included) always blamed sony for their huge bezels (up to the xz1 series) and apple always made (and is still doing, see 8 plus) even bigger bezels... well if apple fans are happy..
btw, I pre-ordered the xz2c with the wireless headphones bundle offer... can't wait to try it out, hope the camera is really improved this time and can keep this new phone at least couple of years, really don't want to keep changing phone every year! :fingers-crossed:
I'm looking forward to it overall. 720p on previous Compacts is starting to feel a bit small and it's overall barely larger than previous Compacts despite being a 5" screen. I welcome the higher resolution, even if it does cost a bit more in battery life. Plus it now has 64GB onboard storage plus a MicroSD card slot. I should be able to fit whatever I want on it now. The missing headphone jack is rather disappointing, but not a total dealbreaker. So I'm planning to get one when it's available.

Xz2 compact isn't a flagship just because it has a flagship processor, the camera is again holding it back from being relevant just like every single xperia compact before it
If we could go back to the 4.3" screen and reduce the bezels we'd have a winning phone. But 5" is MASSIVE and the reduced bezels are not enough for me to pick it over a pixel/Galaxy/iPhone if I have to compromise this much on screen size and camera. Its not that much smaller at all.

i think you didn't read enough reviews of the xz2c.. or we did read different things.. the all i read, say this time camera really improved a lot, and is on par with other flagships. i even saw better pictures taken with the xz2c compared to some of s8 or even s9 ones..

This statement makes no sense at all. Your only choice is the iPhone SE then unless there are other small screen phones in secret out there

Exactly. Screen improvement is what I was waiting for. I don't mind not having a headphone jack, and shipping with Oreo means it'll have Treble support for some additional flexibility. Glass back devices are ridiculous, so that's a plus, and there's no notch in the screen.
Sign me up!
I really also hate the new design - its not a Sony anymore. I would like to have a copmact one with a 4.6" screen and smaler bezels: so the phone shoudl be smaler not the screen bigger!
And pls fingerprint on the side...
Best thing Sony coudl do: a SE of the XZ1C with 64GB, and better Camera
So I need to buy a new phone. This Xperia XZ is the worst phone I've ever used in my life for 2 reasons, general performance and battery life. The battery life has gotten so bad of late that I just cannot continue to use it. I waited till the announcement of the XZ2, but as far I'm concerned, that phone is complete and utter rubbish. So I have to choose between XZ1 and XZ premium. Now you may be wondering, why not just use another brand? Simple, benefit of a doubt. I have been using Sony phones for a long time now, and the XZ is the only Sony phone I have not been satisfied with. I love Samsung's hardware, but I cannot stand their software and super-slow updates. The Pixels just generally have issues. Oneplus has no SD card slot or waterproofing. The only brand I may consider is Nokia. So as it stands, the 2 phones that really suit my needs right now are the XZ Premium and XZ1, but I don't know which to choose, so I thought I'd ask you guys.
1. Which has the better battery life? (Major deciding factor)
2. In favour of XZ1 is the size, I find the XZ premium to be a bit big.
3. In favour of XZ premium is the display.
I think they are identical in every other aspect.
Which one do you guys think is better?
About battery, I'm getting great batt life with the XZ1 compared to XZ.
The biggest difference with the xz premium would be bigger screen and resolution, i guess battery is worst due to this (my guessing). Both phones are basically the same, the XZ1 should be supported longer cause it's a newer phone, personally I don't need a 4k screen atm, that's why i get the XZ1, besides prefer a metal back panel than glass.
XZ1 uses snapdragon 835 which is more efficient than the one in XZ. but have you trace which app that drains your battery?
I have been trying to figure out which app is draining my battery. I have uninstalled apps one at a time (BBM, Facebook Messenger, Facebook etc) to see if there would be a difference, and there is hardly a dent. Most of these apps I had when I used the Z2 and Z3 and both phones had fantastic, simply fantastic battery life. Coming from a Z3 to this phone is like night and day. On a bad day my Z3 would last till the end of the day (roughly 24 hrs) with about 4-6 hrs screen time, on a good day my XZ would make it till the late evening (roughly 18 hrs) with about 2 hrs screen time.
I think I might go for the XZ1 though. Seems like the more logical choice. There is nothing about the XZ2 that even makes me want to consider it.
Which phone did you pick finally? How satisfied with you with your choice so far?

XZ1 is just about $60 cheaper than XZP in my region. Probably only thing I don't like about XZP is the glass back design because I tend to drop my phone a lot.
In a mix to pick the right phone for a long time use (2-3 years solid). The other competitors to XZP are Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6, OnePlus 5/5T, Nokia 8 in my opinion. All of them but Nokia 8 cost around $100-$150 more than XZP here. Nokia 8 sells for nearly $200 cheaper than XZP at the moment.

1. yes you need to baby sit XZP since its LARGE and glassy! must use bumpy skin to protect it
2. both XZP and XZ1 will definitely gets 3 year of android UPGRADES from sony
3. XZ1 will be remembered as just another phone from sony which came at no significant point. where
4. XZP will definitely be remembered in upcoming years!
I consider Xperia Z, XZ and XZP are the MOST POPULAR models in MARKET and also on XDA where Mods, Roms and kernel Dev is concerned!
